SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Rashi sometimes comments on the overall structure of a Biblical paragraph. That is, Rashis job is to indicate how the INDIVIDUAL sentences LINK to form a whole. Gn18-17:21 discussing the destruction of Sedom and Amorah provides an example. The 4 sentences taken together indicate that God will tell Abraham about the destruction of Sedom SO THAT Abraham can teach others, consistent with his being a great leader. Rashi connects the 4 sentences into a whole EXAMPLE ------- Gn18-17 I SHOULD tell Abraham about the destruction Gn18-20 I DO tell Abraham about the destruction Gn18-19 Abrahams knowledge will enable him to teach others Gn18-18 His teaching others is consistent with his leadership

List of verses in Biblical Paragraph Gn18-17:20 We rearrange these verses exhibiting their structure The verses discuss whether God should tell Abraham about the destruction of Sedom and Amorah*1
VERSE | PARAGRAPH PART | TEXT OF VERSE
Gn18-17 | GOAL-TO TELL*2 | I SHOULD tell Abe about the destruction
Gn18-20 | IMPLEMENTATION | I DO tell Abraham about the destruction
Gn18-19 | WHY TELL | Knowledge of destruction helps teach
Gn18-18 | WHY HELP TEACH | Gods goal to make Abraham a leader
|
|||
*1 Thus Rashi on Gn18-18a connects - Gn18-17 I should tell Abe about destruction - Gn18-18 Gods goal to make Abraham a leader/teacher Similarly Rashi on Gn18-20a connects - The goal to tell Abraham - The actual telling *2 The actual verse doesnt state the goal but rather states it rhetorically SHOULD I HIDE FROM ABRAHAM This has the same meaning as I SHOULD TELL HIM |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- A powerful Rashi method is ALIGNMENT in which two almost similar verses are aligned. The minor differences between these two verses indicate further nuances. The use of alignment to indicate subtle nuances is similar to the modern vehicle of footnotes. EXAMPLE 1 Gn18-04b vs Gn19-02 ----------------------------- ABRAHAM: Wash your feet Stay over LOT----: Stay over Wash your feet RASHI: Abraham was concerned about idolatry while Lot wasnt ------ Hence Abraham did not want the dust, that people who bow to idols acquire, in his house (So they had to wash and remove the idol-dust first before staying over). Lot wasnt that particular and invited them to stay over first EXAMPLE 2: Gn18-13b vs Gn18-12 ------------------------------- SARAHS STATEMENT: Can I give birth and my HUSBAND is old GOD CITES STATEMENT: Can I give birth and I(SARAH) am old RASHI: God changed the statement (not my husband is old but ------ I am old) since it is meritorious to modify truth for the sake of peace.

*1 RASHI: Abraham was concerned about idolatry while Lot wasnt Hence Abraham did not want the dust, that people who bow to idols acquire, in his house (So they had to wash and remove the idol-dust first before staying over). Lot wasnt that particular and invited them to stay over first*1
|
|||||
*10 I think the proper way of reading this Rashi is that Rashi is - FOCUSING on the alignment (and the different order) - giving ONE EXAMPLE of resolution Thus if the reader could come up with some other reason that the order was reversed then this alternative explanation would also be in the spirit of Rashi |
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-04 | ||||
Alignment of old age as reason for no children We compare the statements in Gn18-13b and Gn18-12
VERSE | WHO SAID | No birth | Reason
Gn18-12 | SARAHS | Can I give birth and | my HUSBAND is old
Gn18-13b | GOD CITES | Can I give birth and | I(SARAH) am old
Differs | *1 | *2 | *1 | |
|
||||
*1 Sarah said MY HUSBAND IS OLD (and hence I cant give birth) While God when citing Sarah CHANGED this and cited Sarah as saying I (SARAH) am old. This change is consistent with the known rule that it is required to modify the truth for purposes of peace. (Alternatively one can infer the rule from here) *2 This phrase is the same in both verses |

VERSE: Gn18-06a
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-04 | ||
SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Gn18-06a speaks about taking COARSE FLOUR and FINE FLOUR to prepare a meal. One of Rashis goals is to resolve such contradictions in Biblical verses (COARSE vs FINE). One method of resolution is to hypothesize 2 cases. Thus here it is reasonable that FINE FLOUR is used to prepare the cakes while COARSE flour is used to clean the pots.

VERSE-1 | VERSE-2 | HOW THE TWO TEXTS ARE COMBINED
Gn18-06 | Gn18-06 | FINE FLOUR for food;COARSE for pot*2
Dt08-02 | Lv26-06 | WHEN OBSERVANT God protects;ELSE not*1

Nu04-05 | Nu04-15 | PRIESTS pack; KEHATHITES carry*10
|
|||
*1 See Lv26-03. Thus Lv26-03:06 explicitly states that when we observe, God will remove wild animals. Dt08-02 by contrast, explains that conquest of Israel will happen slowly FOR IF IT HAPPEEND QUICKLY WILD ANIMALS WOULD COME (because the Jews moral nature was not yet perfected and the protection of Lv26-03:06 does not yet apply) *11 *2 COARSE flour was used in cooking to wash the pot sides to clear it from rust producing agents and rotted food particles.
|
|||
*10 Rashis point is strengthened by the abrupt change of subject ----------------------------------------------- Nu04-04 This is the job of the KEHATHITES Nu04-05 The PRIESTS come and cover the articles ... Nu04-15 ..and AFTERWARDS the KEHATHITES come ----------------------------------------------- If one just reads Nu04-04 and Nu04-05 by themselves it appears as if the PRIESTS mentioned in Nu04-05 refer back to the KEHATHITES mentioned in Nu04-04 *11 Interesting Rashi cites a verse in Job rather than the explicit Lv26-03:06. Rashi also does not explicitly mention that he is using the rule of resolving 2 contradictory cases. But that IS what Rashi does. It seems rather straightforward to introduce Lv26-03:06. Rashi probably expected the reader to know this verse since it comes in the great REBUKE---Rashi complements this verses with complementary verses in Job |

VERSE: Gn18-04c
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-04 | ||
SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- In Gn18-04 we are told that Abraham asked his guests to rest under THE TREE. Rashi illumines the meaning of the Biblical phrase THE TREE by referring us to OTHER VERSES where the TREES that Abraham used are described as SHADY trees with much FRUIT for consumption. (In other words he tried to make his guests feel good) Here Rashi uses the methods of OTHER VERSES

We present a list of verses where further details of the verse are presented from other verses. The classical example is the Passover Hagaddah example: The verse Dt26-05d, ONLY A FEW JEWS WENT DOWN TO EGYPT, is illumined by Gn46-27 which states that 70 PEOPLE WENT DOWN TO EGYPT. Thus the technique of OTHER VERSES teaches us that A FEW JEWS(Dt26-05d) means 70(Gn46-27)

*1 Lv21-18 says - Blemished priests dont serve BECAUSE blemished - priests dont serve Mal01-08 amplifies this - Would you give a blemished animal to your governor? - Would he like it? Would he grant your favor? *2 Rashis approach to the verse is literal--Bilam was a prophet and he foresaw the defeat of Amalayk by the Jews. Therefore the next phrase in the verse-- --------------------------------------- His(Jewish) Kingdom will be higher than AGAG and his (Jewish) reign will go higher --------------------------------------- This next phrase (GO HIGHER) would refer to the Kings after Shaul--to David and Solomon who had greater Kingdoms and greater victories than Shaul*10 *3 So the point of the verse is that not only were the nation of individual Jews there but that each Jew had his/her very own tribe. Already the Patriarch Jacob laid down the modern idea that Jews must be able to live with people they are compatable with. In fact the layout of tribes given by Jacob (Gn49) and Moses (Nu02) are basically the same (See http://www.rashiyomi.com/gn50-13a.htm) Thus Rashi borrowed the idea of JEWS BY TRIBE and applied it to Dt29-09 *4 Thus we see these other verses as indicating that reference to gOD should be interpreted as CONQUEST BY gOD. Hence the verse reads --------------------------------- God by Himself gave the Jews rest There were no other gods --------------------------------- In other words the Jews did not lose battles and achieved prosperity without political alliances.*11 *5 We could also refer to Gn18-01 THE HEAT OF THE DAY Thus a requirement for guests was to have SHADY trees where they could rest. Gn21-33 describes Abrahams trees as being of the AYSHEL variety which indicates peace and tranquility (from adequate food and shade)
|
||||
*10 It is also possible to have a poetic approach to these verses. Thus - AGAG from GAG would refer to the ROOF nations, that is, nations who think that they are self sufficient (Their own ROOF) and dont need God. The ROOF nations include AMALAYK under King AGAG They would also include the MAGOG kingdom under king GOG (See Ez38) which the Jews will defeat in Messianic times. The second phrase in the verse --------------------------------------- His(Jewish) Kingdom will be higher than AGAG and his (Jewish) reign will go higher --------------------------------------- would therefore refer to King Messiah *11 The use of words to refer to RELATED ITEMS is a literary device call SYNECHDOCHE or METONOMY |
