SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
Rashi frequently comments not on MEANING or GRAMMAR but
on the INTERRELATIONSHIP WITH OTHER VERSES. One powerful
method is the ALIGNMENT method -- two almost similar verses
are ALIGNED -- the minor differences between the verses
indicate new subject matter

EXAMPLE
-------
Gn25-25c THEY named him (the 1st child) Esauv
Gn25-26c HE-- named him (the 2nd child) Jacob

RASHI: Esauv was named by EVERYONE (THEY) while Jacob
was named only by Jacob (HE). Esauv had blatant
characteristics--he was a newborn filled with hair so
everyone called him DONE(ESAUV) (From ASH to DO). Jacob had
no outstanding characteristic so Isaac called him GRAB
because a) he was grabbing Esauvs heal as he left the
womb and b) he was destined to reign over Esauv

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis primary functions is to make broad database
inquiries, studying themes throughout the Bible.

EXAMPLE
-------
There are many prophecies in the Bible. God frequently
introduces prophecies by some SYMBOLIC act. For example
God showed Jeremiah a boiling pot which symbolized the
burning hatred of the nations. Similarly in Gn25-23 God
used Rivkahs pregnancy to symbolize the destiny of the
2 nations that would come from her children. Hence

- The infants fought in the womb = Their nations would fight
- The infants fought = Their nations would each be separate
- Esauv was hairy/ruddy = Edom fights like an animal
- Jacob grabbed Esauvs heal = The smaller overpowers bigger

God frequently introduces prophecies thru symbols (LIST605g)
God used Rivkahs pregnancy to prophesy about Jews vs Rome
We present list of pregnancy-prophecy relations
VERSE ACT DURING PREGNANCY SYMBOLIZES THE FOLLOWING
Gn25-22a The infants fought in womb The nations will fight*1
Gn25-23d The infants fought in womb Nations will be separate*2
Gn25-23e The infants fought in womb One nation overpowers other*3
Gn25-25a Ruddy colored Esauv bloody;like animal*4
Gn25-25b hairy like animal coat Esauv behaves like animal*4
COMMENTS
*1 Rashi gives an alternative explanation that one womb infant
made a fuss when they passed a synagogue while the other
womb infant made a fuss when they passed an idolatry house.

Doesnt this however appear far-fetched.

But it appears to me that the only logical and simple
way to take Rashi is that he is using the PRINCIPLE that
----------------------------------------------------
- prophecies frequently use symbolic events (LIST605g)
- The prophets that Rivkah asked used her difficult
pregnancy to symbolize what would happen to the 2
nations that came from her
----------------------------------------------------.

So Rashi points out that if pregnancy disruptions happened
at certain places (as happens with some women) then this
too could have been in the prophecies.

*2 This is straightforward--FIGHTING symbolizes SEPARATION

*3 See LIST901d for proof that the Hebrew root AMATZ means
OVERPOWER.

Rashi points out that
-------------------------------------------------
When one nation is powerful the other will be
weak and vice verse
-------------------------------------------------

Rashi of course is simply citing the prophecy blessings
of the Patriarch Isaac (Gn27-39:40) who predicted
alternating balance of power between Jacob and Isaac

Thus Rashi is supplementing the SYMBOLIC explanation
using the technique of OTHER VERSES

*4 Rashi translates the Biblical phrase as a FURRY ANIMAL COAT
(or HAIRY ANIMAL COAT). Hence this would symbolize BEHAVING
like an ANIMAL.

The HAIRY ANIMAL symbolism seems to be primary. Rashi would
then supplement this with the complementary symbolism that
Esauvs RUDDINESS symbolizes BLOOD THIRSTY NESS (Cf Gn25-30)

Again: The REASON for interpreting the pregnancy acts this
way is because we use our fundamental principle that
-------------------------------------------------
God uses symbolism to present prophecy
God used Rivkahs pregnancy to symbolize what would
happen to her two children
-------------------------------------------------
LIST901d

List of meanings of root A-M-Tz:Stubborn,Strengthen,overpower
VERSE Meaning of AMATZ capped GRAMMAR MODE
P142-07 save me from those who OVERPOWER me prep FROM*1
Gn23-23 nation will OVERPOWER nation prep FROM*1
Jo01-07 Be STRONG Active*2
Za12-05 STRENGTHEN yourselves in God Active
Ru01-18 She STUBBORNLY stuck to her position Reflexive*3
Dt02-30 STUBBORNED his heart(Made him inflexible) Intensive*3
COMMENTS
*1 When the root is used with the preposition FROM then
it means OVERPOWER (literally STRONGER FROM )
Hence in Gn23-23d it means ONE NATION WILL OVERPOWER
THE OTHER

*2 In the ACTIVE tense the root AMTZ means BE STRONG

*3 In the REFLEXIVE and INTENSIVE tense the root means
to be STUBBORN and INFLEXIBLE
