SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain meaning
the same way a dictionary explains meaning. Rashi
had a variety of vehicles to explain meaning.

One focus of Rashi was on the meaning and usage of
grammatical connectives: Words such as BECAUSE, IF, THEN
WHEN, etc. have special usages and meanings

EXAMPLE
-------
Today and last digest we examine the word THIS
which is used as a referrant. THIS can either
- refer to some physical object that IS being discussed
eg what is THIS in your hand

- refer to an ASSUMED object pointed to
eg THIS is the make of the Candellabrah
Rashi: God SHOWED him the Candellabrah image

- refer to a KNOWN phenomenon
eg THIS is the night of redemption to God
Rashi: Refers to the Exodus Prophecy of
Abraham where God promised Abraham redemption

Collection of verses with the word THIS
THIS either
- refers to some physical object that IS being discussed
eg what is THIS in your hand

- refers to an ASSUMED object pointed to
eg THIS is the make of the Candellabrah
Rashi: God SHOWED him the Candellabrah image

- refers to a KNOWN phenomenon
eg THIS is the night of redemption to God
Rashi: Refers to the Exodus Prophecy
to Abraham where God promised Abraham redemption

In the list below:
- in the first 4 examples THIS refers to something being
discussed
- in the bottom examples THIS refers to an ASSUMED picture
of something being discussed
VERSE VERSE TEXT w THIS means/refers
Ex15-02d This is my God They pointed heavenward to God
Ex04-02a whats this in hand what is in your hand*1
Ex14-20d this and this didnt the two armies didnt get near
------- ------------------ ------------------------------

Nu14-22b tested me THIS 10 Reference to 10 complaints*3
Nu30-02b THIS God says THIS language must be used*4
Gn25-22c WHY THIS ME Refers to her current activities*5
COMMENTS
*1 Rashi also makes comments on the deliberate
misspelling of this word. MISSPELLING is a Biblical
technique. The technical name is METAPLASMUS. Examples
may be found in LIST080a which includes Ex04-02a

*2 Gn15-12:14 ....As the sun set a coma fell on Abraham and
all of a sudden a fear, great darkness, fell on him
and God said...Surely know that your descendants will
be foreigners in a land that doesnt belong to them---
and they will be enslaved -- and they will torture
them 400 years--and also the nation they serve I
will judge and then they will leave with a big reward

Thus THIS night of redemption refers to the redemption
mentioned in the above prophecy (Perhaps there is
also a pun on the darkness)

*3 See LIST210c below

*4 In other words the word THIS makes the contents of the
chapter SPECIFIC and FOCUSED...the exact language
in the chapter must be used in freeing people from
vows (Normally Biblical language are generalized)

For further details see footnote *10

*5 Thus Rivkah had been praying for children....yet
when she experienced the infants fighting each other
in the womb she asked WHY AM I THIS (That is WHY AM
I PRAYING FOR CHILDREN if I go thru this) and the
answer came back that they would be great nations.

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10
Rashi also makes another point: Moses used the
language THIS IS WHAT GOD SAID while other
prophets used the language THUS SAID GOD (THIS
is more specific than THUS).

For a database layout of introductory prophetic phrases
used by MOSES vs OTHER PROPHETS see LIST605f & LIST605g

It is clear from this list that this rule is only approximate
and not absolute. Hence we believe that Rashi rejected
this explanation.

In general we believe that Rashis 1st explanation (when
there are 2 explanations) can be refuted and should not
be accepted
LIST080a
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03

A list of deliberate mis-spellings designed to
suggest a pun like effect. For example
- The word FOREVER is spelled L-A-W-L-M
- The word HIDDEN is spelled L-A-L-M
Hence dropping the W creates a mis-spellilng effect
This suggests two meanings to the verse
- my name is eternal (FOREVER)
- my name should be hidden (Not pronounced)*1

The skillful use of mis-spellings is called
METAPLASMUS
VERSE WORD INTENT SECONDARY MEANING HINTED AT*1
Ex04-02a MaZeH PUN FROM THIS your hand is punished
Gn24-39a OLY Pun To me(Wanted his daughter to marry
Ex03-15a LOLAM Pun Conceal my name

LIST210c
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03

A list of the 10 complaints of the Jews against
God in the wilderness. This illustrates the
technique of OTHER VERSES since Nu14-22b speaks
about the 10 complaints the Jews made against God
Hence the technique of OTHER VERSES must be
used to justify this list.
(This list comes from the talmudic tractate of
Arachin folio 15)
SITUATION VERSE NATURE OF COMPLAINT OF JEWS AGAINST GOD*1
Sea Ex14-11 Why did you take us out of Egypt;God will kill us
Sea Nu11-01 General Complaints about God after Victories*2
Water Ex15-24 Complaints about lack of water (Marah)
Water Ex17-03 Complaints about lack of water(Refidim)
Manna Ex16-27 The Jews violated law;gathered manna on Sabbath
Manna Ex16-20 The Jews gathered more Manna than allowed
Quails Nu11-04 Complaints about lack of Meat*2
Quails Ex16-02 Jews complain about lack of food/meat*2
Gold calf Ex32 Jews made a Golden calf to worship
Spies Nu14 Jews did not believe God could redeem them
COMMENTS
*1 I have simply listed 10 verses with complaints
I have not always followed the Talmudic literal wording
but the above list seems the simplest account of
which 10 complaints are spoken of

*2 Based on Dt09-22 there were two separate incidents
- one incident at TAVAYRAH (Nu11-01:03)
- one incident at KIVROTH TAAVAH (Nu11-04:34)
Hence I have listed each of these as separate complaints*10

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 The question remains as to WHICH complaint Nu11-01:03
refers to.

Nu11-01:03 occurs after Nu10-35:36 which speaks
about Gods help for victory. It therefore seems reasonable
to associate Nu11-01:03 with a complaint after victory

(The Talmud in Arachin may be suggesting that this complaint
happened after the Red Sea salvation--the Jews complained
