Question ANONYMOUS:Wild Rashi--brings in Asnath*1
COMMENTS
*1 Gn43-34 states that Joseph gave Binyamin a five fold
portion. Surprisingly Rashi states
------------------------------------
Here is an account of the 5 portions
- Binyamin received his own portion
- Joseph gave him his portion
- Asnath, Josephs wife gave him his portion
- Menasheh,Ephraim gave him their portions
------------------------------------
Where did Rashi get this

This question will be answered (Thoroughly) in the

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 5 main goals is the explanation of Grammar.
In explaining Grammar Rashi will frequently use the NEAR-MISS
method--two words with almost identical spellings have
different meanings because of precise conjugation rules.

EXAMPLE Gn47-15a
----------------
- Aleph(Kamatz)-Pey(Tzaray)-Samech=Dwindled away
- Aleph(Segol)-Pey(Segol)-Samech=Nothing
Here we have a noun-verb difference based on punctuation
and accent. Other examples may be found in the list below

Gn46-26a ba-AH Accent on end coming BA-ah accent-begin came*3
COMMENTS
*1 In this example the identically spelled word can mean either
- he walked (past tense)
- walk (Command)

Cf The Grammatical tables in the Ibn Shoshan dictionary
Table 1 presents the conjugations in question.

*2 The words are spelled with the same letters. The minute
vowel difference determines whether it is causative(Helped)
vs active (Good)

*3 The two words have the
- same spelling
- same letters
- differ in placement of accents
Cf Gn29-06a vs Gn29-09,Gn46-26a vs Gn46-27 and
Gn42-21b vs Gn34-27

*4 See Ibn Shoshan Dictionary Tables 6 and 7.
The conjugation of the Biblical root Lamed-Vav-Nun
is LLoon not LLeen which should therefore be interpreted
as a noun (night-stay)

Hence the Rashi on Gn24-23b which uses the word LLeen
------------------------------------------------------
Eliezer used the word LLeen indicating he requested
a one night stay. By contrast Rivkah used the word
LLoon--the verb form--indicating that he could stay
for many nights
------------------------------------------------------

*5 I frequently cite the Ibn Shoshan Dictionary, Volume 5,
the Appendix: This gives a short but comprehensive
set of grammatical tables.

- Table 10, Kal Mode for 1-2-2 verbs: Ve-HaM-Mo-Thi
- Table 6: Hifil Mode for 1-v-3 verbs:Ve-Hay-MaT-Ti

Ve-HaM-Mo-Thi means to DESTROY;
Ve-Hay-MaT-Ti means to kill

Although the meanings are similar the conjugations are
totally different as Rashi is quick to point out.

*6 One is a verb and one is a noun--there is also a
difference in accent.

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 5 main goals is to explain word meanings.
Rashi had a variety of vehicles to explain word meaning.

EXAMPLE Gn43-28a SYNONYMS x
-------------------------
-KDH (from KDKD the head) means to BOW
-SCH (meaning Low) means to PROSTRATE

EXAMPLE Gn43-34a METONOMY
-------------------------
NSA means to LIFT. Hence it also means
to GLADDEN SOMEONE or to GIVE A GIFT
(As in English--LIFT his spirits).Here
GIFT is named by a RELATED act (LIFTING
face vs letting it fall--naming by related
meaning is called METONOMY)

EXAMPLE Gn43-29a IDIOMS
-----------------------
FIND-GRACE is the Biblical Idiom for WISH YOU WELL.
The word GRACE by itself can also indicate WISH YOU WELL.

EXAMPLE Gn43-30b UNIFIED MEANING
--------------------------------
Caph-Mem-Resh means NET. Hence it refers to
any STREAKED appearance. Therefore it can refer
to a BURNT POT, or being GOOSE-PIMPLED(emotional)
or to Idolatrous priests(Radack explains that
Priests dressed in Burnt paint; Rav Hirsch explains
that Priests have as their function to Goose-pimple
their adherents)

EXAMPLE Gn43-31a Gn45-01a UNIFIED MEANING
-----------------------------------------
Aleph-Pay-Kuph means STREAM. Hence it can
also refer to sudden streams of emotions
(or the restraint associated when they come)
It also refers to ACTIVE LEADERS (STREAMERS).

Ez20-40 In my Holy mountain I will accept their PriestGIFTS

COMMENTS
*1 Rashi translates N-S-A as PORTIONS. But this of course
means that he GAVE them PORTIONS.(The meaning of N-S-A
in the rest of the Bible is always GIFT not PORTION--
Hence we interpret Rashi as indicating WHAT the gift was
The verse then translates perfectly normally--
-- and he gave them gifts---Benyamins gift was 5 fold)

*2 In this verse the VERB form (TO GIVE) is used.
In the other verses we use a noun form (MSAYTH)

Gn45-01a Couldnt control himself--from his STREAMING EMOTIONS*1
Jb12-21 The Belts of STREAMERS he loosens*2
Jb40-18 His Bones are STREAMS of Copper*3
COMMENTS
*1 The Bible uses here the INTERACTIVE TENSE. In other words
INTERACTING WITH STREAMING EMOTIONS = CONTROLLING ONESELF

Note the English analogy--his emotions GULFED/STREAMED

*2 A STREAMER would be an Active leader always on the go

*3 Most commentators interpret this to mean HIS BONES ARE STRONG
However I would interpret it using the meaning of STREAM
--HIS BONES ARE STREAMS OF COPPER--
Imagine smelting molten copper---the streaming molten copper
when first formed has a crisp fresh look--that is the ways
the bones of the Leviathan look.
LIST862q

List of meanings of root C-M-R = net-like form
VERSE TEXT OF VERSE WITH MEANING OF C-M-R CAPPED

La05-10 Our skin blackened like an oven with STRIPED STAINS*1
Gn43-30b His pity GOOSE-PIMPLED towards his brother*2
2K23-05 Idolatrous PRIESTS*3
COMMENTS
*1 Most commentators use this verse to translate CMR as BLACK
However since CMR means NET I assume the reference is not
to COLOR but FORM (When a pot gets stained it does so
in a striped net-like form). Similarly when there is skin
disease from starvation the skin usually gets patched in
a net like fashion

*2 GOOSE-PIMPLES have a NET-LIKE appearance. At any rate
K-M-R can mean INTENSE emotions

*3 Radack and Hirsch offer different reasons why KMR means PRIESTS
- RADACK: Priests dressed in black-striped uniforms
- HIRSCH: Priests see their purpose in life to GOOSE-PIMPLE
their adherents.*10

LONGER FOOTNOTES
*10 Rav Hirsch makes a point of contrast between Jewish/NonJewish
priests.
- JEWISH PRIESTS - See their job as RECTIFICATION of emotions
- NON-JEWISH PRIESTS - See their job as GOOSE-PIMPLING people
Bringing out the emotional in them

COMMENTS
*1 FIND GRACE can equally mean
- I wish you well
- You were wished well by me
- I desire to be wished well

*2 In these 2 verses the word GRACE occurs by
itself without the full phrase FIND GRACE
Nevertheless it still has a connotation of
WISHING WELL

Gn37-03a SON OF OLD AGE Youngest *1
Gn37-26b COVER BLOOD Conceal murder *2
Ex21-21a DAY OR DAYS 24 hours
Lv13-39a DULL WHITE DULL WHITE
COMMENTS
*1 Rashi points out 3 equally possible meanings
- Youngest son (Son born while father was ELDERLY)
- Wisest son (ELDER=WISDOM)
- Son who resembles father (despite old age he still
looks like son)

*2 This is an example of a DOUBLE METONOMY
Blood is ASSOCIATED with life and COVER is
associated with denial. Hence COVER-BLOOD=conceal-murder

*3 NOON is the midpoint between EVE and DAWN. Hence
NOON is the BETWEEN THE EVES.

*4 The context is the proposed marriage of 15 year old
Rivkah to Isaac from another country. The offer had
been made by the servant of Abraham to Rivkahs family

The Biblical text states: Let us(her parents)
ASK HER MOUTH

This is the ONLY time in the Bible that this
phrase occurs(The verb ASK occurs frequently).
Apparently this phrase means
- Lets DISCUSS or LETS GET AN OPINION*10
Such an interpretation is appropriate for a marriage
decision

*5 FIND-GRACE can equally mean I WISH YOU WELL or
YOU WERE WISHED WELL. Rashi points out that GRACE
by itself has this same connotation (Without the
full phrase FIND GRACE). See LIST854g for further
details

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Hence the Rashi on Gn24-57b: The Biblical text
states that Rivkah responded: I WILL GO.

But Rashi, surprisingly states: I WILL GO WHETHER
YOU LIKE IT OR NOT.

Why did Rashi read such an emphasis into the simple
question and answer
------------------------------------------
PARENTS: Rivkah, Will you go with this man
RIVKAH: I will go.
------------------------------------------

The answer is that the Bible says
------------------------------------------
PARENTS: We will DISCUSS THE MATTER with her;
get her opinion
PARENTS: Rivkah, Will you go with this man
RIVKAH: I will go.
------------------------------------------

Thus the context shows that Rivkah was not
INTERESTED IN A DISCUSSION--she had already
made up her mind

COMMENTS
*1 This root occurs very infrequently We have
- Lv15-03a oozing (RR) of sexual secretions
- 1S21-14 (Spittle)
- Jb06-06(Oozing of plants or spittle)

*2 Thus YQTziA doesnt just refer to ANY CUTTING but
rather to SANDPAPERING. Hence this root can
also refer to CORNERS and EDGES
(which get their distinctness from being SANDPAPERED)

*3 I used an English analogy. Actually TNUR vs CIRaYIM
seem to refer to a ONE-burner vs a TWO-Burner
hot plate. I am not actually sure on all details*10

*4 Both of these are pots. One is shallow--the type
used for frying. The other is deep--the type
used for rich cooking*10

*5 These are two shades of white. I dont know if analogies
exist in English (CLOUD-WHITE or
SNOW-WHITE vs MARBLE WHITE)*10

*6 I dont believe English has technical terms for the TOP
vs the Bottom grindstone*10

*7 Again there are no English words. The Kaph-Vuv-Resh
refers to a VAT that can hold about 200 Gallons

By contrast the Kaph-Yud-Vuv-Resh refers to a hugh
TANK of water with faucet holes. This TANK was
used to wash hands and legs in the temple (The water
sprinkled out of the holes and washed the person)

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 I believe Rashis basic thrust in all these verses is
explaining items that are ALMOST similar in meaning
but have some subtle nuance (Like STOVE OVEN).

However Rashi goes further and gives etymologies of
some of these words eg
- SeAyTh = CLOUD WHITE (From NaSiH=cloud)
- MaChaVath= FRYING PAN (Has a rim that HIDES(Cheth-Bet)
- MaRCheSeth= Deep Cooking Pan(food BUBBLES (RaChSh))
- RCV=Top Grindstone that RIDES(RCV) on the other grindstone
There are more etymologies; some of these have been
discussed elsewhere. I believe these are the basic ones.

Subject Big question on Rashi Gn43-31:34
COMMENTS
*1 TEXT OF QUESTION

Hello:

Would you please help me to understand pshat in Rashi
on :34 particularly in the context of :31 and :33?

What does the 5-times the portion to Binyamin mean?

I was not troubled until I saw Rashi
mention Osnas in the middle of :34.

...

What was bothering Rashi and what
was Rashi teaching us here?

...

Now at a deeper level, taking the 3 Rashi's together:

at :31 Rashi tells us about Yoseif showing tremendous restraint.

at :33 Rashi tells us that Yoseif called out each name of his brothers

at :34 Rashi tells us about Osnas and Menashe and Ephraim

Even if the first time the brothers came down Yoseif recognized them but
they didn't recognize him, Yoseif likely would have expected the brothers
to return for Shimon someday, even if he expected them to return for more
food in the future as well.

So perhaps Yoseif would have mentioned his brothers to his sons and his
wife?

Or perhaps Yoseif never said anything, but did teach his sons and his
wife the names of his brothers?

Or perhaps Osnas even knew the names of her uncles when she was sent
away from Yaakov's household, particularly the name of Shimon who
married her mother Dinah?

Regardless....

at :31 we're told of Yoseif's phenomenal restraint, and here with Menashe
and Ephraim likely present or near by hearing the names that Rashi tells
us at :33 Yoseif called out, then something should have clicked for them
and they would have realized that these are their uncles, and also showed
tremendous restraint.

And if Rashi is telling us that Osnas was here at Yoseif's table with
Menashe and Ephraim too perhaps, wow, thats a family that knows how
to show restraint!

So, please tell me more about what Rashi is saying in this section.

And I see that Artscroll (Sapirstein Rashi) quotes the following
sources as perhaps what Rashi was using:

Tanchuma, Vayigash 4 -- monos = presents (quoting Esther 2:18) and
monos meaning food (Ezekiel 20:40 - with Rashi)...

Bereishis Rabbah 92:5 - explaining how Yoseif arrived at the number 5 -
(Mizrachi)

Thank you.

ANSWER
------
Rob
Great question (Because it forces me to explain
a major new branch of a Rashi principle).

To see the full story read the next issue
http://www.Rashiyomi.com/h20n11.htm
http://www.Rashiyomi.com/h20n11.pdf

To make a short story here are the basic ideas

- Rashi is using the Rabbi Ishmael rule of BROAD interpretation
- The Text of Gn43 shows that Joseph treated Binyamin NICELY
- Rashi simply gives GOOD EXAMPLES of WHAT MIGHT HAVE HAPPENED
- So the main import of the text that he gave him 5 portions
is that Joseph showed Binyamin no ill will even though he
forced him to come a long journey
- A possible example of this good treatment is that Josephs
whole family participated in treating Binyamin nicely.
- Yes--we will prove this next time with a rare but insightful
Radack which most people are unaware of--Stay Tuned

In passing the MEANING OF MASAYTH (Gift-to LIFT a persons spirits)
is presented in the above lists in todays issue.
