*1 LEINING is a YAHOOGROUP. One topic is whether
Rashi ever deviates from the Teamim. I suggested no.

SUCCINCT SUMMARY:
-----------------
One of Rashis 5 main goals is to alert us to nuances
that come from other verses.

EXAMPLE
-------
Jacob, in Gn49 curses the BROTHERS, SHIMON and LEVI
for murder and pillage. A quick glance at Gn34 shows
that the BROTHERS, SHIMON and LEVI destroyed and
pillaged the city of Schem.

(Rashi also suggets that Shimon and Levi tried to
kill Joseph--this uses the advanced method of
spreadsheets).

COMMENTS
*1 Rashi states the following: "If MOTHERS make mistakes it
is because they raise children; if SINGLE women make
mistakes it is because they try to pick people up"
Rashi should be perceived as giving ILLUSTRATIONS of
why being without children is disgraceful for women

*2 Jacob did not NEED permission to leave with HIS wife
But his father-in-law would perceive it as STEALING
his daughter.

*3 Gn27-41 states that Esauv hated Jacob for stealing the
blessing. Gn27-44 states that after a few years this
hatred would subside. Hence Gn33-09 with its statement
I DONT NEED YOUR MONEY confirms these other 2 verses.

*4 Rashi is NOT commenting on the MERE coincidence that
Shimon and Levi are called BROTHERS in two places.
-Gn49-05 talks about Shimon and Levi KILLING and
PLUNDERING
-Gn34 also talks about SHIMON and Levi KILLING
and plundering.
Thus the cross reference is clear. The accident
that they are called BROTHERS in both places
simply spices up the correspondence.

COMMENTS
*1 Rashis actual language is as follows
-----------------------------------------
Yissachar and Zevulun couldnt have done it
because they were the 5th and 6th child
and would not have spoken up in front
of their older brothers Shimon and Levi
-----------------------------------------

But I have deviated from Rashi to show how
strong the spreadsheet method is.

After examining the above spreadsheet we see
there are only 4 people who could have tried
to kill Joseph--Shimon, Levi, Yissachar, Zevulun

We can now offer many arguments

ARGUMENT 1 Yissachar and Zevulun wouldnt have
---------- spoken in front of an old brother

ARGUMENT 2 Shimon and Levi were murderers anyway
---------- as we can see from the pillage of
Schem

ARGUMENT 3 Joseph jailed Shimon and disgraced
---------- him in front of his other brothers
as it states in Gn42-24 According to this
explanation ONLY Shimon tried to Kill Joseph
not Levi.

My intention here is not to deviate from Rashi
but rather to show you how powerful the
spreadsheet methods are.

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 5 main goals is to explain the meaning of
words the same way the dictionary does.

EXAMPLE
-------
The Biblical phrase TOOLS OF VIOLENCE means a VIOLENT
CRIMINAL PERSONALITY.

EXAMPLE
-------
The Biblical root Caph-Resh which means the melting
pot also refers to SOJOURNSHIP/ALIENSHIP.

Hence the Rashi on Gn49-05: The Biblical phrase
IN SOJOURNSHIP THEY USED UTENSILS OF VIOLENCE means
that while in a helpless state(powerless and their
sister was raped) they resorted to violence (instead
of faith).

LIST871b, LIST871c)

*2 See LIST871e for 6 Rashis mentioning this HAND=DOMAIN
theme

*3 See LIST871f for verses where NSA means GIFT

*4 Rashi citing the Midrash Rabbah states
-------------------------------------
Your violence is something you VIOLATED
from Esauv (You are killing like Esauv)
-------------------------------------

But I see no reason to see this Midrash
as the PRIMARY simple meaning of the
verse. The PRIMARY meaning of the verse
is that Shimon and Levi were criminals
The Midrash is simply adding a pun to this
observation.

COMMENTS
*1 The primary meaning is a BIG MEASURE (4,320 eggs)
- Hence it can mean MELTING POT (Since you need
a big pot to melt items)
- MELTING POT refers to SOJOURNSHIP since being
an alien is like being a "fish" in a big tank

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 5 main goals is to explain overall structure
This is particularly true in poetic passages. We have
advocated that the best way to understand a poetic passage
is to
- identify the unifying idea
- review the clauses supporting this unifying idea
- emphasize nuances in these verses

EXAMPLE Gn49-06
---------------
Jacob states: Simon/Levi are criminals-No association with them
Jacob develops this theme
- I dont want part of their logic
- I dont want part of their mob scenes
- BECAUSE They killed a city
- BECAUSE They pillaged a city

Rashi then adds further details by referring to Gn34
- Their logic to kill a city BECAUSE THEY RAPED OUR SISTER
- Their mob scenes killing an entire city
- They killed the city of Schem where Dinah was raped
- They pillaged the city of Schem

It seems to me that this is the simple meaning of the text
However Rashi following the Midrash adds TYPICAL EXAMPLES
IN THE FUTURE*1
- Their logic in Midyanite Rebellion - WE CAN MARRY LIKE MOSES
- Their mob scene by Korach
- their attempts to kill Joseph

List of Poetic clauses in Gn49-06
COMMENTS
*1 This seems to me to be the simple way of taking
Rashi--namely the verse does refer to Schem--
but to enrich our understanding of the verse
Rashi shows similar examples in the future.

In other words it is not NECESSARY to assume
that Rashi believed the PRIMARY MEANING of
the verse refered to the future.

Gn49-06f For they pillaged/castrated livestock Schem*7 Joseph
COMMENTS
*1 Gn34-31 Shimon and Levi killed a city because
THEY TREATED OUR SISTER LIKE A HARLOT*10

*2 Nu26-05 A high ranking Simonian prince
had relations publicly before the whole
congregation. The suggestion was that the
Simonian prince used the following logic
--------------------------------------
If you Moses could marry a Midiyanite
why cant we
--------------------------------------

*3 Gn34-25 Shimon and Levi killed a city

*4 Nu16 -- Shimonites incited a rebellion against Moses

*5 Gn34-25 Shimon and Levi killed a whole city

*6 See http://www.Rashiyomi.com/gn49-05a.htm in
this digest (Volume 20 Number 14) It was Shimon
who tried to kill Joseph (See Gn37-19)

At a simple level Rashi is simply generalizing
everything in the verse. That is, not only were
Shimon and Levi violent in Schem they were also
evil and violent in many other places.

However Rashi is also commenting on the
use of the singular in the verse. Instead of
the verse saying
------------------------------------------
In their anger they killed PEOPLE
When they felt like it they castrated OXEN
------------------------------------------

It instead says
--------------------------------------------
In their anger they killed a PERSON
When they felt like it they castrated the OX
--------------------------------------------

Rashi points out that military victories can
be described either against a PERSON or against
a PEOPLE. However the use of the singular suggests
that Shimon and Levi sinned against a single
person besides a whole city.

*7 See Gn34-28. It explicitly says that Shimon
and Levi PILLAGED THE CITY. As we indicated above
we think the simplest way to take Rashi is that
- the verse primarily refers to their actions in Schem
That they destroyed a whole city

- but to enrich our understanding of the verse Rashi
gives comparable examples of violence from Shimon
and Levi in the future.
