SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 5 main goals is the explanation of GRAMMAR
the same way GRAMMAR books explain grammar. A classical
application of Grammar is the conjugation of verbs. There
are many books listing the conjugation of verbs. My favorite
source is the 12 Page appendix to Volume 5 of the Ibn Shoshan
Dictionary.

EXAMPLE Ex09-03a
----------------
God-s hand WILL BE on your livestock

WILL BE is the ACTIVE MODE, PRESENT TENSE of H-Y-H

EXAMPLE Ex06-03c
----------------
I had not BEEN KNOWN by my name the Creator

BEEN KNOWN is PASSIVE MODE. In other words God did tell
them His name but they never saw Gods creation since eg
God promised them Israel but they never saw this
created (fulfilled). (I.S.(Ibn Shoshan) table 2)

EXAMPLE Ex25-40b
----------------
...the Candellabrah which you are BEING SHOWN in the mountain

BEING SHOWN is present tense, PASSIVE MODE indicating that
God actually showed Moses a Candellabrah design presumably
because Moses had difficulty understanding it (I.S. Table 9)

EXAMPLE Ex08-05a
----------------
(Moses to Pharoh) DARE ME to give a time when the plague
will stop

DARE ME is the INTERACTIVE MODE (I.S. Table 1) of the
root P-A-R (Praise). By DARING Moses to provide a time,
Pharoh is forced to PRAISE God if the plague stops at
that time.

EXAMPLE Dt29-18a
----------------
...and he PATS HIMSELF ON THE BACK saying all is OK

PATS HIMSELF ON THE BACK is the INTERACTIVE MODE (I.S.
Table 1) of the root B-R-Ch which means to BLESS. To
INTERACTIVELY BLESS oneself is to say ALL IS OK

Ex08-05a P-A-R Command Interactive DARE me to stop the plague*3
Dt29-18a B-R-C Past*4 Interactive PATS HIMSELF ON BACK-all is OK
COMMENTS
*1 God-s point is not that God didn't tell the Patriarchs his name,
but rather that God had NOT BEEN KNOWN by that name. In other
words God made promises to the Patriarchs (such as promise of
Israel and redemption from Egypt) but the Patriarchs never
saw these promises fulfilled (Hence God had NOT BEEN KNOWN by
his ability to create--that is they hadnt seen it fulfilled).

In the context, Moses is being reprimanded for wanting
IMMEDIATE fulfillment of prophecy.

*2 Rashi is Simple -- Moses was shown the Candellabrah design
which was sculptored from one piece. From the fact that
the verse explicitly mentions this we infer that Moses had
difficulty in comprehending the design and hence God had
to show it to him.

*3 P-A-R means to PRAISE. The interactive tense means to DARE--
that is, Moses DARED Pharoh to specify a time when the
plague would stop--if the plague stopped at that time
then Gods greatness would be revealed and He would be
PRAISED.

*4 B-R-Ch means to BLESS. Interactive BLESSING means HE PATS
HIMSELF ON THE BACK (He convinces himself that what he
is doing is correct)

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 5 main methods is the explanation of words
the same way the dictionary explains words. Rashi gave
special attention to connective words like BECAUSE, ALSO,
ON, etc.

Today we review the Hebrew word ALSO which is used in 3 ways

EXAMPLE Ex12-21b
-------------------
-- To ADD something similar

- (eg You (MOSES and AARON) ALSO will go --
The word ALSO includes the ADULT MEN)

The adults are EXTRA to Moses and AAron

EXAMPLE Ex12-21c
-------------------
-- To ADD derived things

- (eg The JEWS will ALSO go --
The Word ALSO includes the INFANTS)

The INFANTS are DERIVED (Born) from the Jews

EXAMPLE Ex06-04a Ex06-05a
-------------------------
-- To indicate a similar RELATIONSHIP or METHOD

- eg I(God) ALSO revealed myself to the Patriarchs
(The word ALSO denotes that the METHOD by which God
appeared to the Patriarchs (He promised them something
which was not fulfilled IMMEDIATELY but after many years,
is similar to the method by which God revealed Himself
to Moses--Even though God promised Moses to redeem the Jews
nevertheless, this redemption would not happen immediately
but after 10 plagues)

COMMENTS
*1 Here is the way to use this list. We use the first row

Verse Column
------------
First we look up the verse Ex19-22a AND ALSO THE PRIESTS
WILL SEPARATE.

Text Column
-----------
We see the text---- PRIESTS separate.

Also Column
-----------
This column indicates that ALSO includes the FIRSTBORN
(who functioned as priests).

So the verse is read as follows
--------------------------------------------
God told Moses: The Priests ALSO (besides the firstborn)
will separate
--------------------------------------------

In other words the word ALSO is interpreted to include
the FIRSTBORN besides the PRIEST. The FIRSTBORN are
EXTRA to the priest.

To make this easier to see I have CAPPED both FIRSTBORN
and PRIESTS.

*2 So here without the word ALSO I would say that God punishes
nations which subjugate us. With the word ALSO I say that God
both punishes the nation AND with 10 plagues AND with letting
the Jews out with wealth.

*3 God criticized Moses for wanting an IMMEDIATE fulfillment
of the prophecy that the Jews will be redeemed. God said
I ALSO gave prophecies to the Patriarchs (And they did
not demand immediate fulfillment)

*4 7:2--7 Kosher animals vs 2 non-kosher animals--
is only mentioned by the ANIMALS. The word ALSO
implies the 7:2 ratio was preserved by the birds ALSO.

*5 Just as when Sarah couldn't have children she gave her
husband(Abraham) her maid (Hagar) so too when Rachel
could have children she gave her husband her maid

*6 Laban had tricked Jacob into marrying Leah vs. Rachel.

*7 Jacob had tricked Isaac into blessing him. Isaac says
he is ALSO blessed. In other words, EVEN if he hadnt
tricked me he would still be blessed.

*8 The Non-jews complained about the lack of food in
the desert. The verse continues THEY RETURNED AND
COMPLAINED, ALSO THE JEWS. The word ALSO connotes
that the Jews complained with the same cynicism
as the non-jews.

LONGER FOOTNOTES

- ALSO connotes an EXTRA extraneous object
- ALSO connotes a DERIVED object
- ALSO connotes a SIMILAR RELATIONSHIP or method

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 5 methods is to provide support for Biblical
texts from OTHER VERSES

EXAMPLE Ex06-04b
----------------
God mentions His promise to give the Jews Israel. This
promise to Abraham is made in Gn17-08

EXAMPLE Ex06-01a Ex06-04b
-------------------------
God criticizes Moses for wanting an IMMEDIATE fulfillment
of Gods promise to redeem the Jews. After all, God says,
God made promises to the Patriarchs to give them Israel
and redeem them and God did not fulfill these promises
immediately (See Gn17-08 Gn26-03 Gn35-12). If the Patriarchs
did not complain then Moses should not complain either.

EXAMPLE Ex06-05b Ex06-06a Ex06-06c
----------------------------------
God mentions that HE REMEMBERS HIS TREATY...THEREFORE...
HE WILL REDEEM THE JEWS. All this refers back to Gn15-13:21
where God promised Abraham to redeem the Jews and give them
great wealth.

PERSON VERSE Text of verse--promise of Redemption
Abraham Gn17-08 Abraham is promised Israel/redeem EVENTUALLY
Isaac Gn26-03 Isaac is promised Israel/redeem EVENTUALLY
Jacob Gn35-12 Jacob is promised Israel/redeem EVENTUALLY
---- ------- --------------------------------------------
Moses Ex06-01a Moses complains on lack of IMMEDIATE redemption*1
Moses Ex06-04b Moses complains on lack of IMMEDIATE redemption*1
COMMENTS
*1 This list contrasts the behavior of the Patriarchs vs Moses
- Both Moses and the Patriarchs were promised Israel and
redemption

- None of the Patriarchs ever saw the redemption. Each
realized that the promise was EVENTUAL

- But Moses complained at the first sight of something wrong
Hence we see that Moses was not on the prophecy level of
the patriarchs. For further details see *10

Thus this list gives MULTIPLE VERSE support for the
Rashi on Ex06-04b

COMMENTS
*1 Rashi states the following: "If MOTHERS make mistakes it
is because they raise children; if SINGLE women make
mistakes it is because they try to pick people up"
Rashi should be perceived as giving ILLUSTRATIONS of
why being without children is disgraceful for women

*2 Jacob did not NEED permission to leave with HIS wife
But his father-in-law would perceive it as STEALING
his daughter.

*3 Gn27-41 states that Esauv hated Jacob for stealing the
blessing. Gn27-44 states that after a few years this
hatred would subside. Hence Gn33-09 with its statement
I DONT NEED YOUR MONEY confirms these other 2 verses.

*4 Rashi is NOT commenting on the MERE coincidence that
Shimon and Levi are called BROTHERS in two places.
-Gn49-05 talks about Shimon and Levi KILLING and
PLUNDERING
-Gn34 also talks about SHIMON and Levi KILLING
and plundering.
Thus the cross reference is clear. The accident
that they are called BROTHERS in both places
simply spices up the correspondence.
