SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis main goals is to indicate Biblical style. The Bible had a variety of literary vehicles to indicate such things as BOLD, KEYWORDS, PARAGRAPHS etc. (In modern times we indicate these items differently than the Bible did--but the concept of BOLD, KEYWORD PARAGRAPH is the same in both the Bible and modern times) Today we examine BULLETS The Bible indicates a BULLET structure by REPEATING KEYWORDS EXAMPLE 1 Gn37-08a ------------------ The brothers hated Joseph - ON ACCOUNT OF his dreams - ON ACCOUNT OF his slander By repeating the KEYWORD, ON ACCOUNT OF, the Bible creates a BULLET LIKE EFFECT. The two bullets emphasize that there are TWO REASONS for the Brothers to hate Joseph EXAMPLE 2 Gn37-23a ------------------ When Joseph came to his brothers they stripped him - OF his daily coat - OF his special coat Again the repeated KEYWORD, OF, indicates that the brothers stripped Joseph of two items.

*1 Rashi refers to Josephs slander of his brothers explicitly mentioned in Gn37-02. For more details on this Rashi and the bullet method see note *10
|
||||
*10 The literal Biblical text states --------------------- account of his words --------------------- WithOUT the bullet-keywords the phrase HIS DREAMS AND WORDS sounds as if it is referring to one item--his dreams(and his words on those dreams). True Rashi refers to Gn37-02 which states ---------------------------------------------------- Joseph brought SLANDER to his father on his brothers ---------------------------------------------------- but the question remains: ------------------------------------------ How does Rashi know that HIS WORDS refers to something BESIDES his dreams Why not simply assume that HIS DREAMS AND WORDS refers to one item ------------------------------------------ The answer lies in the BULLET-KEYWORD method. --------------------------------------------- Whenever the Bible repeats a connective word (like ACCOUNT OF) it indicates a BULLET-LIKE structure. And it is this BULLET like structure which suggests TWO ITEMS (Because there are 2 bullets!) Once we are told that there are two items we can refer to Gn37-02 to see that the second item was his slander. -------------------------------------------- In summary: Without the bullets I would interpret ACCOUNT OF HIS DREAMS AND WORDS as referring to one item (HIS DREAMS). With the bullets I interpret ON ACCOUNT OF HIS DREAMS AND ON ACCOUNT OF HIS WORDS as if it were bulleted * on his drams * on his words And it is this bullet like structure which directs me to seek a second item(dreams and slander). We have here an example where the Rashi derivation is based on style--not on grammar or meaning. It is not the EXTRA WORD or any nuance of meaning that requires me to interpret the verse a certain way--rather it is the bullet like structure which so requires. |

*1 Without the bullet-keywords (repetition of OF) I would interpret HIS COAT HIS SPECIAL COAT as referring to one item (SPECIAL COAT would be in apposition to COAT). Because of the bullet like structure, however, I interpret each item separately. |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 5 main goals is to resolve inferences from distinct verse sources. Rashi had 5 methods to resolve verse pairs that appeared to contradict them. Today we illustrate the MODALITY method where the contradiction is resolved by seeing one verse as a REQUIREMENT and the other verse as a PERMISSION EXAMPLE 1 Gn37-10 vs Gn37-11 ---------------------------- On the one hand Jacob ridiculed Josephs prophecies (How can you dream that your mother will bow to you if she is dead!) On the other hand Jacob guarded Josephs prophecies and helped prepare him to become a prophet. Rashi explains that by ridiculing the prophecies he saved Joseph from Jealosy which might intefer with them. Here the REQUIREMENT is to GUARD the dreams but it is PERMITTED to PRETEND otherwise if it helps the overall goal EXAMPLE 2 Dt15-09a Dt24-15b --------------------------- Both verses speak about praying to God to punish those who cause monetary anguish (like employers). One verse says PRAY the other verse says DONT PRAY. This is interpreted to mean that YOU MAY PRAY for the death of a bad employer but you arent REQUIRED EXAMPLE 3 Ex12-15b Dt16-08a --------------------------- You MUST eat Matzoh the first day; You MAY eat it the last 6 days. EXAMPLE 4 Lv23-08b Nu28-19 -------------------------- You MUST offer Holiday sacrifices preferably in certain amounts of OX, RAMS and SHEEP. But if these animals are not available you MAY switch the animal types EXAMPLE 5 Nu05-10a Dt18-03 --------------------------- You MUST give priests certain priestly gifts. But you MAY chose which priest you give (Hence one verse says GIVE THE PRIESTS while the other verse says YOU OWN IT)

*1 Hence one verse says JACOB GUARDED THE PROPHECY while another verse shows Jacob rediculing the prophecy (Jacob says HOW CAN YOU DREAM YOUR MOTHER WILL COME BOW TO YOU WHEN SHE IS DEAD).*10 This contradiction explains several other related Rashis - Gn37-33b The Biblical verse states A WILD ANIMAL HAS KILLED JOSEPH yet Rashi interprets this to mean A WILD WOMAN PLAYED WITH HIM AND PEOPLE BEAT HIM UP Why did Rashi so interpret? Because Jacob knew that the prophecies would one day come true. Therefore Joseph couldnt be dead. So he assumed he got into TROUBLE*11 - Gn37-35b Jacob REFUSED TO STOP MOURNING JOSEPH after it was reported he was dead. Why? Because Jacob knew that the prophecies would come true and therefore he couldnt be dead

*10 Rashi actually translates Shin-Mem-Resh as WAITING (Not guarding). However the standard meaning of Shin Mem Resh is to guard. The point is that when you GUARD a growing product you are in effect preventing inteferrence with the growth process and WAITING for the object to mature (eg a plant, vegetable or fruit). So the original meaning of GUARD stands--but Joseph was growing up and Jacob knew he couldnt accelerate it. Presumably Jacob helped Joseph by preparing him for prophecy by teaching him the appropriate items. *11 In passing since Joseph was a tattle-tale perhaps Jacob believed that Joseph so to speak needed such a spanking - (starting up by a wild woman and being beaten up) - to grow up |
