*1 The most frequent complaint I get is I DONT HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO READ YOUR VERY INTERESTING RASHI MATERIAL. Hence, we introduced THE LIGHTNING SUMMARIES. For each list in this issue we summarize in ONE LINE the punchline of Rashi. IF ALL YOU HAVE TIME FOR, IS READING 8-10 LINES THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO! |

*10 The explanation of the list should be clear - The first column gives the NUMBER of the RASHI RULE used All Rashi rules may be found with examples at http://wwww.Rashiyomi.com/workbook.htm - The second column gives the LIST ID (eg LIST210z) which contains many examples of a particular Rashi technique and includes the example presented in the third column - The third column gives a lightning summary of the Rashi with particular emphasis on the Rashi rule used. Thus if all you see in the 3rd column is ------------------------------------ Aaron BLESSED=THE PRIESTLY BLESSING ------------------------------------ This means that -- the verse states that Aaron BLESSED -- but an OTHER VERSE indicates which BLESSING Aaron gave (He gave the Priestly Blessing) If the reader is now curious (s)he can review LIST210z which shows many other examples of the OTHER VERSE method. |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 5 main goals is the explanation of dictionary meaning. Rashi had a variety of vehicles to explain meaning. EXAMPLE Meaning by Form ----------------------- - The BALD refers to WORN OUT GARMENTS (whose surface is smooth from constant usage). - The PUDDLY refers to NEW WOOL GARMENTS (whose surface have lots of lint (that is lint puddles)) Here meaning is determined by FORM (The FORM of old garments resembles the FORM of bald people...they are both smooth--similarly both Hairy people and New wool garments have a similar PUDDLY like form). Other examples of MEANING BY FORM are presented in the lists below.

*1 The original meaning of the word Q-W-M is to AWAKE. From this it means STAND UP. When applied to inanimate objects it refers to a vertical standing *2 Demons in dreams often appear with HORNS Hence it is reasonable to call them GOATS *3 This root seems to be very controversial. For example some people (Radack cites them) suggest that the root is Zayin-Nun (WEAPON) with an added prefix of Aleph. Hence Rav Hirsch suggests that the etymology is PERSONAL (ALEPH) WEAPONS. I would simply say that the UTENSIL BELT with hanging cases on both sides looks like 2 ears on a head. Thus the meaning is based on FORM.*10 *4 The verse literally is translated as follows ---------------------------------------------- So they (The Kehatites) shall not come and look as the holy (objects) are being packed ----------------------------------------------- For possible further examples see footnote *11 *5 cf these verses showing that LOZ means TWISTED or DEVIANT Pr03-21, Pr03-33,Pr02-15. (Rashi cites the French name of these trees) *6 The Hebrew root Resh-Beth-Dalet means - Necklace(Gn41-42c, Ez16-11) - Quilt(Pr07-16, Pr31-21) These are the only 4 occurences in the Bible. Both NECKLACES and QUILTS have the FORM of LINKED CIRCULAR items.*12 *7 The root GIMEL-BETH can mean PUDDLE or HIGH (Puddles are HIGH spots on the ground). I think the HAIR on a persons head and the LINT on a new wool garment resemble a PUDDLE OF HAIR LIKE PROTRUSIONS. Again the emphasis is on naming by form. *13
|
||||
*10 To be fair Rashi explains TWO words in this verse - The Hebrew Aleph-Zayin-Nun means WEAPON - The Hebrew AL which usually means ON can also mean BESIDES. For the 6 meanings of AL see http://www.RashiYomi.com/al-5.htm Or visit the Rashi word page, http://www.RashiYomi.com/words.htm *11 Radack in his book, Biblical roots, lists 3 meanings ------------------------------------------------- a) SWALLOW as in Jr51-34--He SWALLOWED me like a Crockodile b) DESTROY as in La02-02 - God has DESTROYED, without mercy c) HIDE/PACK as in Nu04-20 ------------------------------------------------- It is debatable whether there are other verses illustrating this meaning of HIDE. Radack suggests Jb27-30 and Jb10-08. I would say Is19-03--- ------------------------------ God will HIDE (conceal) their advice ------------------------------ the metaphor of HIDING ADVICE is similar to the tone at 2S15-31. Suffice it to say that there is much controversy on all the proper meaning of all these verses. However our translation of Nu04-20 seems to be standard *12 One subtle point about seductresses using quilts: The quilt is both a COVER and an EXPOSURE (because of the many air spaces in the quilt). Hence a seductress COVERED with a quilt also EXPOSES herself (and thereby seduces). *13 It has come to my attention that we have several lists on meaning by FORM. Namely -------------------------------------------------- LIST VOLUME # NUMBER # ITEM NAMED BY FORM -------- --------- --------- --------------------- LIST804a Volume 16 Number 22 NOUNS named by form LIST814a Volume 19 Number 9 VERBS named by form LIST810b Volume 21 Number 15 NOUNS named by Form LIST813a Volume 20 Number 9 NOUNS named by Form --------------------------------------------------- We hope to consolidate these in the near future. |

VERSE: Lv14-23a
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-04 | ||
SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Rashi frequently infers conclusions from the OVERALL PARAGRAPH structure and its development style EXAMPLE Lv14 ------------ - TOPIC: LEPER PURIFICATION CEREMONY - Lv14-01:20 LAMB VERSION: ------ Day 1: Take Cedar, hyssop... ------ Day 7: Shave whole body ------ Day 8: Offer LAMB sacrifices - Lv14-21:32 BIRD VERSION ------ Day 1: Not mentioned explicitly in text ------ Day 7: Not mentioned explicitly in text ------ Day 8: Offer BIRD sacrifices Thus the parallel structure makes it clear that BOTH the bird and lamb version of the leper purification ceremony have identical procedures on the 1st and 7th day and offer their respective sacrifices on the 8th day. In particular we infer that the Torah was silent about the 1st and 7th day in the Bird version because it is identical to the 1st and 7th day in the lamb version. In this case the inferences are based on PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE.

*1 From the PARALLEL paragraph construction we infer that BOTH the LAMB and BIRD leper purification ceremony had - the Shaving procedure on the 7th day - the Hyssop,Cedar, Worm-wool procedure on the 1st day The Bible only dealt with the fact that different animals are brought (LAMB vs BIRD) but on the same 8th day Hence, here, we have an example of inference from overall paragraph structure |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis main methods is the skillful use of cross-references to illuminate other verses. EXAMPLE Lv14-20a ---------------- Lv14-10b, Lv14-21a, Lv14-20a all refer to various MINCHAH offerings that are brought in the Leper purication ceremony. The MINCHAH offerings refer to the OIL-WINE- LIBATION offerings mentioned in Nu15-01:11 which accompany the sacrifices. The proportions of items mentioned in Lv is consistent with the proportions mentioned in Numbers.

*1 Rashi states the following: "If MOTHERS make mistakes it is because they raise children; if SINGLE women make mistakes it is because they try to pick people up" Rashi should be perceived as giving ILLUSTRATIONS of why being without children is disgraceful for women *2 Jacob did not NEED permission to leave with HIS wife But his father-in-law would perceive it as STEALING his daughter. *3 Gn27-41 states that Esauv hated Jacob for stealing the blessing. Gn27-44 states that after a few years this hatred would subside. Hence Gn33-09 with its statement I DONT NEED YOUR MONEY confirms these other 2 verses. *4 Rashi is NOT commenting on the MERE coincidence that Shimon and Levi are called BROTHERS in two places. -Gn49-05 talks about Shimon and Levi KILLING and PLUNDERING -Gn34 also talks about SHIMON and Levi KILLING and plundering. Thus the cross reference is clear. The accident that they are called BROTHERS in both places simply spices up the correspondence. *5 There are many verses which explicitly confirm Lv06-05b - that the DAILY UP OFFERING must be the first offering of the day and the last (any other offerings must be offered strictly inbetween them). Here is a partial list of verses where this principle is enunciated Nu28-15,23,24,31 Nu29-06,11,16,22,25...Lv03-05*10
|
||||
*10 Lv06-05b only speaks about THE UP..but in light of these other verses the word THE clearly refers to the DAILY UP. Rashi(following the Talmud) further declares -------------------------------------------- We also derive from this verse (Lv06-05b) That: Just as no offering can be offered BEFORE the DAILY UP (the DAILY UP must be the FIRST) so no offering can be offered AFTER the EVENING DAILY UP (the EVENING DAILY UP must be the LAST). -------------------------------------------- My own opinion is that Rashi simply indicates a derivation by analogical logic (not by verse derivation). In other words since all the other verses state ---------------------------------------- this offering must be offered AFTER (AL) the MORNING DAILY UP ---------------------------------------- we infer (by LOGIC, not by VERSE) that the EVENING DAILY UP should have a similar status (no offering offered AFTER) |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- A powerful Rashi technique is the ALIGNMENT method in which almost similar verses are aligned. The minor differences between them sheds light on nuances and details. An equally powerful use of alignment is to infer meaning of unknown terms EXAMPLE Lv13-48b, Lv13-48c ----------------------------- Or if the leprosy is in -------- SKIN (Garments) -------- WORKED SKIN (Garments) From the alignment Rashi infers that - SKIN refers to RAW LEATHER - WORKED SKIN is an idiom meaning PROCESSED LEATHER

(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-04 | ||
SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 5 main goals is the explanation of GRAMMAR the same way GRAMMAR books explain grammar. A classical application of Grammar is the conjugation of verbs. There are many books listing the conjugation of verbs. My favorite source is the 12 Page appendix to Volume 5 of the Ibn Shoshan Dictionary. Rashi will particularly focus on conjugations - with very rare forms or - common forms but rare meanings EXAMPLE Lv13-55a ---------------- The verse say AFTER IT HAS BEEN WASHED. Thus the verse uses a PASSIVE INFINITIVE (it has been washed)(Rashi). However as we show below the form HuKaBayS is so obscure that it doesnt really resemble any form--whether passive, causative or interactive (reflexive). All we can be certain about is the verse meaning not the conjugation used. EXAMPLE Ex09-03a ---------------- God-s hand WILL BE on your livestock WILL BE is the ACTIVE MODE, PRESENT TENSE of H-Y-H EXAMPLE Ex06-03c ---------------- I had not BEEN KNOWN by my name the Creator BEEN KNOWN is PASSIVE MODE. In other words God did tell them His name but they never saw Gods creation since eg God promised them Israel but they never saw this created (fulfilled). (I.S.(Ibn Shoshan) table 2) EXAMPLE Ex25-40b ---------------- ...the Candellabrah which you are BEING SHOWN in the mountain BEING SHOWN is present tense, PASSIVE MODE indicating that God actually showed Moses a Candellabrah design presumably because Moses had difficulty understanding it (I.S. Table 9) EXAMPLE Ex08-05a ---------------- (Moses to Pharoh) DARE ME to give a time when the plague will stop DARE ME is the INTERACTIVE MODE (I.S. Table 1) of the root P-A-R (Praise). By DARING Moses to provide a time, Pharoh is forced to PRAISE God if the plague stops at that time. EXAMPLE Dt29-18a ---------------- ...and he PATS HIMSELF ON THE BACK saying all is OK PATS HIMSELF ON THE BACK is the INTERACTIVE MODE (I.S. Table 1) of the root B-R-Ch which means to BLESS. To INTERACTIVELY BLESS oneself is to say ALL IS OK

*1 God-s point is not that God didn't tell the Patriarchs his name, but rather that God had NOT BEEN KNOWN by that name. In other words God made promises to the Patriarchs (such as promise of Israel and redemption from Egypt) but the Patriarchs never saw these promises fulfilled (Hence God had NOT BEEN KNOWN by his ability to create--that is they hadnt seen it fulfilled). In the context, Moses is being reprimanded for wanting IMMEDIATE fulfillment of prophecy. *2 Rashi is Simple -- Moses was shown the Candellabrah design which was sculptored from one piece. From the fact that the verse explicitly mentions this we infer that Moses had difficulty in comprehending the design and hence God had to show it to him. *3 P-A-R means to PRAISE. The interactive tense means to DARE-- that is, Moses DARED Pharoh to specify a time when the plague would stop--if the plague stopped at that time then Gods greatness would be revealed and He would be PRAISED. *4 B-R-Ch means to BLESS. Interactive BLESSING means HE PATS HIMSELF ON THE BACK (He convinces himself that what he is doing is correct) *5 This verb is so rare that it is not possible to make any reasonable comment. Here are some ideas - Rashi takes it as PASSIVE tense (Nifal) Now the infinitive of PASSIVE is Hay-A-Cayl. The rare infinitive of PASSIVE is Hay-A-Chol--this is conjugation pattern #3490 in Silbermans Grammatical Form Konkordance (He gives the following examples: Lv07-18, 2S17-11,Nu09-17, Lv13-14, Ex40-37, Ez43-18, Lv13-07 ) Clearly however Hay-A-Chol and HuKaBays are two different forms. - Silberman himself lists HuKaBays as conjugation form #7113 -- He thinks it a rare Hitpael or Hifil. The truth of the matter is that the form is so rare and obscure that it doesnt really resemble anything!! All we can be sure is that the verse means AFTER IT WAS WASHED. The form used doesnt really resemble any other form (So we should take Rashi SEMANTICALLY not SYNTACTICALLY) |
