VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain the meaning of words the same way a dictionary explains the meaning of words. In explaining word meaning Rashi had at his disposal a variety of vehicles. We illustrate naming by form. EXAMPLE Ex25-23a ---------------- - Table STATURE = Table HEIGHT EXAMPLE Ex25-25a ---------------- - a Table CASING (Msgrth) SURROUNDS (Sgr) table

*1 Rashi supplements this explanation by citing verses where RKA means to FLATTEN OUT(eg Isa42-05,P136-07, 2S22-43, Ez06-11,Ex39-03, Nu17-04, Jr10-09--in all these verses RKA means to flatten out/crush) *2 Perhaps the punchiest example is the following - PENTAGON - named by form - U.N. ----- named by function *3 - STATURE is an attribute of HUMANS - HEIGHT is an attribute of OBJECTS |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Rashi frequently commented using the powerful ALIGNMENT method: Two or more verses are aligned - the minor difference between them imply rich nuances. EXAMPLE Ex26-03a Ex26-04b ------------------------- - Ex26-03a JOIN each set of 5 curtains together - Ex26-04:06 make RINGS for the JOINED curtain sets and JOIN the curtain sets by CLASPS The ALIGNMENT suggests TWO methods of joining - the 5 curtains were JOINED by SEWING them side to side - then the 2 curtain sets of five are JOINED by CLASPS

Alignment of How curtains were joined(SEW,CLASP)
VERSE | Phrase1 | Phrase2 | |
Ex26-03a | JOIN | each 5 curtain set to each other
Ex26-04b | On the JOINED sets | make rings on their SIDES
Ex26-06 | JOIN with CLASPS | the curtains
Differ | *1 | *2 | |
|
|||
*1 Two methods of JOINING are described - JOINING by the traditional method (SEWING) - JOINING by CLASPS The HEBREW verb Cheth-Beth-Resh as well as the the HEBREW noun Cheth-beth-Resh-Tauv can refer to SEWED objects *2 - Each curtain was 28 x 4. There were 10 curtains. - The LENGTH side had 28. The WIDTH side had 4 - 5 curtains were SEWED alongside the length - The 5-curtain sets had dimensions of 28 x 20 - 50 Rings were placed on the SIDES - Then 50 CLASPS joined the two sets of 28x20 - The resulting CURTAIN set had dimensions of - 56 x 20 and covered the Tabernacle supports. |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 5 mains tasks is to explain grammar the same way modern Hebrew textbooks do. An important principle of grammar in all languages is APPOSITION. The examples will illustrate and clarify what APPOSITION means. STANDARD EXAMPLE Is63-07 ------------------------ - The KINDNESS of God I will remember -- - the PRAISE of God This sentence is UNDERSTOOD as follows ------------------------------------------------ - I will remember the KINDNESS and PRAISE of God ------------------------------------------------ This illustrates what APPOSITION does--it takes part of a sentence (PRAISE) and places it at the end as an afterthought! Apposition, is a powerful technique that is used in poetry--it strongly causes the listener to evoke associations(which is one goal of poetry) Ex25-33b Ex25-33c ----------------- - 3 STEMS in each shaft -- BUDS and FLOWERS - 3 STEMS in each shaft -- BUDS and FLOWERS This really means - 3 STEMS BUDS and FLOWERS in each shaft
