SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 5 main goals was to explain word meanings the same way the dictionary explains word meanings. Sometimes Rashi explained the meaning of a Biblical root by equating it with another root--the two roots might differ by a weak root letter which could be ignored EXAMPLE Ex29-20a ---------------- The TNCh=The EARLOBE comes from T-Ch=In the MIDDLE of the ear Here the letter NUN is silent. EXAMPLE Ex29-20b ---------------- The BOHEN=The THUMB comes from BNH=To BUILD since the thumb enables grasping and enables man to build items (Thus the THUMB is the BUILD finger). Here the letter HEY is weak.

*1 Rashi Ex29-20a *2 Note AS is really Aleph YUD Shin. Some would suggest that AYS denotes POWERFUL men while ANS denotes WEAK men *3 These last two items denote poetic idiom--the THIEF vs the ARMED ROBBER operates steahily (in holes). One (quick) way of hiding something is UNDER THE SHEARINGS. |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Rashi frequently comments by making broad database queries and noting patterns. EXAMPLE ------- We can compare ALL SACRIFICES mentioned in the Torah. We can then ask questions such as - which PARTS of the animal are COMMON to ALL sacrifices - which PARTS have different treatments - WHO gets the PARTS EXAMPLE Ex29-22a ---------------- Ex29-22 discusses the CONSCECRATION offering. We are told that the FAT is offered. By comparing the use of FAT in other sacrifices we infer that this refers to the INTESTINAL Fat EXAMPLE Ex29-22a ---------------- The ALYAH fat is mentioned in the CONSCECRATION offering. What does ALYAH mean? By comparing with other sacrifices we infer that it means the FAT OPPOSITE (BELOW) THE ADRENALS. EXAMPLE Ex29-22c ---------------- By comparing all sacrifices we find that the CONSCECRATION offering is the ONLY offering in which the THIGH was offered (In other PEACE offerings, the THIGH was given to the PRIEST not to the ALTAR) EXAMPLE Ex29-22d ---------------- The CONSCECRATION OFFERING is also called by the Bible the PEACE offering. By comparing all offerings we see that only the PEACE and CONSCECRATION OFFERINGS involve THREE parties (OWNERS eat the MEAT; PRIESTS get the THIGH/BREAST; the ALTAR burns the KIDNEY FAT).

*1 (Rashi)So FAT in Ex29-22a refers to the INSIDE fats *2 As can be seen, only LAMB offerings (Peace, Sin) offer the ALYAH fat. Lv03 clearly defines the ALYAH fat as OPPOSITE THE ADRENALS (Rashi Ex29-22b) *3 As can be seen the CONSCECRATION OFFERING is the only sacrifice in the Torah where the Thigh was OFFERED (In other sacrifices it was given to the priest) (Rashi Ex29-22c) *4 As can be seen from the table only the PEACE and CONSCECRATION offering gave portions to the OWNER, PRIEST, and ALTAR. This similarity of the PEACE and CONSCECRATION offering is reflected in the Torah which explicitly classifies the offering using both terms (cf Ex29-22d and Ex29-28) *10 *11
*10 The Torah explicitly shows the 3 fold nature of the CONSCECRATION Offering in Lv08 as follows: *12 - (a) The FAT was offered on the altar (Lv08-28) - (b) Moses who functioned as priest ate the BREAST(Lv08-29)*11 - (c) Aaron how functioned as owner and ate the MEAT(Lv08-31) *11 As can be seen from Lv08 in the CONSCECRATION offering - Aaron who normally was a priest functioned as the OWNER (And received the same portions that non-priests usually receive) - Moses who normally was a Levite functioned as a priest and received the portion eaten by priests *12 There are two ways to name offerings: (a) BY WHAT THEY ATONE FOR (b) BY HOW THEY ARE OFFERED Naming by what they atone for ----------------------------- -UP atones for OMISSIONS (Not going up to God) i.e. violation of positive commandments -SIN atones for SINS (Violations of negative prohibtions) -PEACE atones for DANGERS (eg you arive safely from a journey) -GUJILT atones for GUILT that cannot be proven (eg you knew testimony and witheld it) Naming by How they are offered ------------------------------ The UP offering is TOTALLY (All parts) offered UP on the altar The PEACE offering is given to 3 parties (ALTAR, OWNER, PRIESTS). This creates so to speak peace among the parties The SIN offering is given to the PRIESTS and ALTAR |
