SUCCINCT SUMMARY:
----------------
One of Rashis 5 main goals is to explain grammar
the same way dictionaries do. One component of
Hebrew grammar is the examination of plurality.

EXAMPLE Ex29-24a
----------------
Moses places the sacrificial object on Aarons hand
and HE(vs. THEY) waives them. (Rashi) Moses waived
Aarons hand which held the sacrificial objects (When a
SINGULAR verb is used with a PLURAL subject then
it indicates that one person instigates the
action)*1

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
Rashi frequently explored SYMBOLIC meaning in his commentary

EXAMPLE Gn01-04b Ex29-25c Ex29-25d
----------------------------------
LIGHT in general and FIRE in particular SYMBOLICALLY refers
to prophecy. Hence we have the symbolic references
- Gn01-4b God created LIGHT=God created prophecy
- Ex29-25c,Ex29-25d Sacrifice given to FIRE on ALTAR=
we aspire to PROPHETIC LIGHT of God

RASHIS COVERED: Ex29-26a Ex30-04a
Ex29-26a
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-04

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis main goals is to explain word meaning the same
way a dictionary explains meaning. Rashi had a variety of
vehicles by which to explain meaning

EXAMPLE Ex29-26a--Inferring meaning from verses
-----------------------------------------------
The Hebrew root Nun-Pay means TO WAIVE

EXAMPLE Ex30-04a--2-3 WORD IDIOMS
---------------------------------
Tzade-Lamed-Ayin normally means SIDE and can e.g. refer to
the RIBS. The phrase SIDE OF SIDES therefore would be an
idiom referring to the CORNER (i.e. the corner is on the
side of the side)

as in a SAWING motion

*2 A metaphor for thinking it easy to conquer.

Ex14-05b CHANGE OF HEART Changed his mind
Gn43-29a FIND GRACE Wish(ed) you well *5
Gn24-57a ASK HER MOUTH Discuss/get opinions *4
Ex12-06d BETWEEN THE EVES NOON *3
Gn37-03a SON OF OLD AGE Youngest *1
Gn37-26b COVER BLOOD Conceal murder *2
Ex21-21a DAY OR DAYS 24 hours
Lv13-39a DULL WHITE DULL WHITE
COMMENTS
*1 Rashi points out 3 equally possible meanings
- Youngest son (Son born while father was ELDERLY)
- Wisest son (ELDER=WISDOM)
- Son who resembles father (despite old age he still
looks like son)

*2 This is an example of a DOUBLE METONOMY
Blood is ASSOCIATED with life and COVER is
associated with denial. Hence COVER-BLOOD=conceal-murder

*3 NOON is the midpoint between EVE and DAWN. Hence
NOON is the BETWEEN THE EVES.

*4 The context is the proposed marriage of 15 year old
Rivkah to Isaac from another country. The offer had
been made by the servant of Abraham to Rivkahs family

The Biblical text states: Let us(her parents)
ASK HER MOUTH

This is the ONLY time in the Bible that this
phrase occurs(The verb ASK occurs frequently).
Apparently this phrase means
- Lets DISCUSS or LETS GET AN OPINION*10
Such an interpretation is appropriate for a marriage
decision

*5 FIND-GRACE can equally mean I WISH YOU WELL or
YOU WERE WISHED WELL. Rashi points out that GRACE
by itself has this same connotation (Without the
full phrase FIND GRACE). See LIST854g for further
details

*6 Tzade-Lamed-Ayin means SIDE (and hence can refer
to the RIBS). Thus Ex30-04 speaks about the SIDE
OF SIDES--that is the CORNER.

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Hence the Rashi on Gn24-57b: The Biblical text
states that Rivkah responded: I WILL GO.

But Rashi, surprisingly states: I WILL GO WHETHER
YOU LIKE IT OR NOT.

Why did Rashi read such an emphasis into the simple
question and answer
------------------------------------------
PARENTS: Rivkah, Will you go with this man
RIVKAH: I will go.
------------------------------------------

The answer is that the Bible says
------------------------------------------
PARENTS: We will DISCUSS THE MATTER with her;
get her opinion
PARENTS: Rivkah, Will you go with this man
RIVKAH: I will go.
------------------------------------------

Thus the context shows that Rivkah was not
INTERESTED IN A DISCUSSION--she had already
made up her mind

RASHIS COVERED: Ex29-42a Ex27-21a

(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-04

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis five main goals is to illuminate the meaning
of verses thru cross-references.

EXAMPLE Ex29-42a Ex27-21a
---------------------------
According to Ex29-39 the Hebrew word TAMID in Ex29-42a means
CONTINUAL-EVERY DAY (Offer DAILY sacrifices twice a day) while
according to Ex27-20 the Hebrew word TAMID in Ex29-21a means
CONTINUOUS (have the candellabrah light burn all night)

List of verse pairs with one verse shedding meaning on words
LIST250a
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-04

We present a list of verses where
the meaning of words in one verse are
illumined by the usage of these words
in other verses.

The classical example is the word CALF
which occurs several times in the
Torah(eg Gn15-09).

We know a CALF is a YOUNG OX/BULL
but we dont know HOW YOUNG. The details
are gives by Lv09-07d which shows that
CALFS are 1 year (And this derivation
is accepted legally)
VERSE TEXT OF VERSE OTHER VRSE MEANING

Dt01-19a GREAT & AWESOME desert Dt08-15 with snakes
Ex13-20a SUCCOTH*1 Nu33-05 RMSYTH->SCCTH
Gn15-09 CALF Lv09-07d 1 year old
Ex21-17b HIS BLOOD ON HIM Lv20-27 StoneTo Death
Ex14-24b CONFUSION attacks 1S07-10 by NOISE
Ex30-13e GAYRAH 1S02-36 CURRENCY UNIT
Ex30-18d Washpan near ALTAR Ex40-27:29 COPPER ALTAR
Nu01-02c Count Jews by HEADS Ex38-26*2 COIN per HEAD
------- ------------------- -------- ------------
Ex29-42a CONTINUAL offering Ex29-39 Twice a day*4
Ex27-20 CONTINUOUS burning Ex27-21a all night*4
COMMENTS
*1 Ex13-20 Jews journeyed from Succoth after Exodus
Ex12-27 Exodus: Jews go from Raamsayth to Succoth
Nu33-05 Exodus, Then Raamsayth, THen Succoth

The point is that Nu33-05 makes it clear that
there were 3 places
- Exodus FROM Egypt
- TO Raamsayth
- TO Succoth.

Ex13-20 only mentions 2 of the places
Ex12-27 makes it sound like they left EGYPT, ie
they left RAAMSAYTH.

It is in fact common for places to have multiple
names. So Nu33-05 illumines that there were 3
distinct places

*2 Also see Ex30-11:16 which prohibits DIRECTLY
counting people. Instead, we must count the
COINS of each person and from this infer
the total count.

*3 Nu17-05 further illumines by calling it a MEMORIAL
Thus we have SYMBOL MEMORIAL BANNER.

Since NAYS means BANNER it refers to anything
that ATTRACTS attention such as SYMBOLS or
MIRACLES

*4 In this example the Hebrew word TaMid can mean
either CONTINUAL or CONTINUOUS depending on context.
