- The first column gives the NUMBER of the RASHI RULE used
All Rashi rules may be found with examples at

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 5 main goals is the explanation of meaning
the same way a dictionary explains meaning. Rashi had a
variety of vehicles to explain meaning including explaining
synonyms.

EXAMPLE OATH
----------------
Rashi presents 4 words which can indicate OATH
- BY MY(Gods) LIFE
- THEREFORE
- RAISING HAND TO HEAVEN
- (God) REPEATING A PROMISE

Verses for each of these are presented in the list below.

List of words which mean OATH(Therefore,By My Life,Raise Hand,Repeat)
VERSE Means Oath Text of verse
Gn08-21b REPETITION I WILL NOT I WILL NOT bring a flood*1
Gn14-22a RAISE HAND I RAISE MY HAND TO HEAVEN:I-ll not take booty*2
Dt32-40a RAISE HAND I will RAISE MY HAND to heaven (I will avenge)
Nu20-12c THEREFORE THEREFORE you will not bring Jews to Israel
Ex06-06a THEREFORE THEREFORE tell the Jews I will redeem them*3
1S03-14 THEREFORE THEREFORE I swear to the Priests of Eli
Dt32-40b BY MY LIFE I will say: I, (GOD) AM LIVING (I will avenge)
Nu14-21b BY MY LIFE However I AM ALIVE: These spies will die*4
Nu14-28a BY MY LIFE I AM ALIVE...this is what I-ll do to spies
COMMENTS
*1 Is54-09 speaks about the OATH not to repeat the flood. However
we find no OATH not to repeat the flood but we do find a
REPEATED PROMISE (I WILL NOT I WILL NOT). We infer that a
REPEATED PROMISE is equivalant to an oath

*2 Rashi also makes a point that the PAST tense is used here
to indicate a PRESENT activity. This list will be analyzed
in another digest. Right now we are only concerned with
the synonyms for OATH

*3 Rashi-s literal language is
---------------------------------------------
Because of the oath I took to the Patriarchs
therefore I will redeem the Jews
---------------------------------------------

But we have interpreted it to mean
---------------------------------------------
Because of the oath I took to the Patriarchs
therefore I will SWEAR again to redeem the Jews
---------------------------------------------

This translation is consistent with Rashis translation
of THEREFORE as an OATH in Nu20-12c.

*4 Rashi gives more details on this oath and connects it
to Moses prayer. But Rashis basic idea is that I GOD AM ALIVE
is an oath.

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
Rashi frequently comments by making broad database queries
and noting patterns.

EXAMPLE-Nu16-13:14
-------------------------
Datan and Aviram, as part of their rebellion, accused Moses
of the opposite of what he had been doing. For example

- Moses promised to take the Jews out of Egypt to a land
of Milk and Honey

- So Datan accused Moses of taking the Jews out of a land
of Milk and Honey

- So Datan accused Moses of trying to kill the Jews in
the desert (The death decree on the spies)

- Moses delegated his authority and power but Datan accused
Moses of being a person who craved control

- Moses promised the Jews a land of milk and honey but
Datan accused him of not giving them that--probably
a reference to the sweet Manna which the Jews called
dry

- Moses promised to bring them to a land of GOOD LIVING
WITH BREADTH but Datan accused Moses of the opposite--
for example the meat they were given caused them illness

- Moses promised to conquer the heathens in Canaan. But
Datan accused Moses of following heathen customs and
wanting to gauge their eyes out (In fact Moses always
waited for Gods decision on punishment)

COMMENTS
*1 This column summarizes the complaints of Datan and
Aviram in Nu16-13:14 In each complaint Datan and Aviram
accused Moses of the Opposite of what he did. This was
part of their attempt to rebel against Moses and anger him
In the last two columns we bring support (from other
rebellions) showing how Moses was accused of the opposite
of what he was really like.*11

*2 Rashi: Nu16-14a Rashi points out that the adverb
NO refers both to
- NO you didnt give us a land of milk and honey
- NO you didnt give us a land of vineyards
Such elliptical repetitions of keywords is common in
Biblical literature.

*3 Datan-s / Aviram-s actual phrase is
-------------------------------------------
Will you gauge our eyes out if we dont come
-------------------------------------------

According to 1S11-02 the Gauging of eyes is a heathen
practice.

But Moses was promising to Defeat the heathens and
set up a just society.

In passing: Moses never hurt people who sinned but
rather sought guidance from God (cf Lv24-12, Nu15-34)*10

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 This list was inspired by a Chumash lecture by Rabbi
Landau of Ner Tamid who cited several academic papers
dealing with such things as the gauging of eyes

Rabbi Landau pointed out that there is a controversy
among the Rishonim whether the GAUGING OF EYES refers
to PULLING THE WOOL OVER PEOPLES EYES or refers to
PUNISHMENT (Nu16-14b)

The above list was partially worked out during his
lecture. It is consistent with the goals of this
website to see Rashi as commenting on single themes
that can be supported by lists of comparable examples.
These comparable examples can be taken directly from
the Bible without reference to external sources(Such
as academic sources on heathen practices)

*11 The interpretation of the list should be clear. Take
the first row.

MOSES: Promised to take the Jews FROM Egypt TO Israel
which is a land of milk and honey
DATAN: Accuses Moses of the opposite--of taking the
Jews out of EGYPT which they call the real
land of MILK AND HONEY
SUPPORT: We in fact find support in other rebellions
that the Jews considered Egypt a wealthy land
with Good food and Good living.

The other columns are interpreted similarly.
