SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis primary goals is the explanation of meaning the same way a dictionary explains meaning. One powerful vehicle of explaining meaning is to use METONOMY--that is, the meaning of one concept is explained by a related concept. Today we explore a cluster of words related to the concept of BORDER. We see how the various ATTRIBUTES of BORDER are named using RELATED concepts. EXAMPLE ------- - 2 Rashis explain that the Hebrew G-V-L means BORDER - 2 Rashis explain that BORDER can refer to SPECIAL BORDERS (Such as the HEM - the BORDER of CLOTHES) - 2 Rashis are grammatical: TO BORDER means TO CREATE a border; The BORDER OF NORTH means the NORTHERN BORDER - Several Rashis explain BORDER ATTRIBUTES using poetic metaphor of related meanings -- A DESCENDING border = from NORTH to SOUTH -- The ROLLING border = the JAGGED border -- The border GOING OUT = a JUTTING border -- the END border or OUSTED border = the border END | ||

*1 The Biblical text is literally BORDER OF NORTH. Rashi brilliantly points out that this does not mean the BORDER of the NORTH but rather the NORTHERN BORDER *2 E.g. If most of border is SQUARE LIKE but one segment juts out (like LONG ISLAND vs NEW YORK or the TIP OF FLORIDA) then we call that a GOING OUT OF BORDER |
