SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
Rashi frequently comments by making broad database queries
and noting patterns.

EXAMPLE-Dt01-45a
----------------
The Jews cried before God (Because of their punishment)
but God did not listen to them.

Rashi (Paraphrased): Frequently we see that CRYING leads
to ACCEPTANCE of supplication from God or Spiritual people.
In the case of the Jews who accepted the slander of the
spies this is not the case---Even though the Jews cried
and were sorry God did not accept their repentance.

By reviewing the list below one can see the great horror
of Slander which prevents Gods mercy.

(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-04

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis five main goals is to illuminate verse meaning
using cross references to OTHER VERSES.

EXAMPLE: Dt01-36a THE LAND CALEB SPIED = Chevron
------------------------------------------------
- Dt01-36 I, God, will give to Caleb the land he spied
- Ju01-20 They gave to Caleb Chevron

So it is clear that the reference in Dt01-36 is Chevron.
Further support can be obtained from comparing the singular
and plural used in Nu14. All activities of the spies are
in plural (THEY did it) except for the arrival at Chevron
(HE came to Chevron). This suggests that only one spy came
to Chevron; --reasonably, this is Caleb who opposed the other
spies. It is also reasonable that he came there to pray
for strength to stand up to them (See LIST003a in posting
http://www.Rashiyomi.com/n22n7.htm)

COMMENTS
*1 Rashi states the following: "If MOTHERS make mistakes it
is because they raise children; if SINGLE women make
mistakes it is because they try to pick people up"
Rashi should be perceived as giving ILLUSTRATIONS of
why being without children is disgraceful for women

*2 Jacob did not NEED permission to leave with HIS wife
But his father-in-law would perceive it as STEALING
his daughter.

*3 Gn27-41 states that Esauv hated Jacob for stealing the
blessing. Gn27-44 states that after a few years this
hatred would subside. Hence Gn33-09 with its statement
I DONT NEED YOUR MONEY confirms these other 2 verses.

*4 Rashi is NOT commenting on the MERE coincidence that
Shimon and Levi are called BROTHERS in two places.
-Gn49-05 talks about Shimon and Levi KILLING and
PLUNDERING
-Gn34 also talks about SHIMON and Levi KILLING
and plundering.
Thus the cross reference is clear. The accident
that they are called BROTHERS in both places
simply spices up the correspondence.

*5 There is also an element of IDIOM (NEW MEANING HERE)
That is Lv25-25:26 speaks about the REDEEMER(=Nearest
of Kin) while Nu35-19 speaks about the BLOOD REDEEMER
However the concepts are similar....the REDEEMER
in each case is the NEAREST OF KIN.

*6 Further support can be obtained from comparing the singular

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 5 main goals is to indicate paragraph
structure. One method of paragraph
structure is the Rabbi Ishmael GENERALIZATION STYLE RULE.
This rule states that if you have 3-4 phrases with
- the terminal phrase describing a GENERAL IDEA
- the initial phrases describing EXAMPLES/DETAILS of the
GENERAL principle
Then you are justified in using poetic license and
reinterpreting the initial phrases so as to indicate
all aspects of the General idea (Even if this requires
bending meaning).

EXAMPLE Dt01-17
---------------
DETAILS
-------
- DONT SHOW FAVORITISM IN JUDICIAL PROCESS = in picking JUDGES
- Judge SMALL and BIG equally = small and big CASES
- Dont fear any PERSON = equal treatment of LITIGANTS
GENERAL
- Because the final judgement will be rendered by God

Thus Rashi interprets the General principle that JUSTICE
BELONGS TO GOD to apply to requirements of EQUAL TREATMENT
in CASES, LITIGANTS and CHOSING JUDGES.

Again: Rashi is NOT deriving these interpretations from
the meaning of the verse WORDS--rather Rashi is deriving this
interpretation from the overall poetic structure.

This is a fundamental principle! Understand it.

TYPE TEXT OF VERSE CLAUSE EQUAL TREATMENT IN
DETAIL - Dont show favoritism in JUSTICE JUDGES*1
DETAIL - hear SMALL & BIG alike CASES*2
DETAIL - dont fear any PERSON LITIGANTS*3
--- ---------- ---------------
GENERAL - Judgement belongs to God*4
COMMENTS
*1 That is, equal treatment in selecting judges*10

*2 That is, judge a small monetary case the same way
you judge a big one*10

*3 That is treat a poor and rich litigant, equally*11

*4 Rashi elaborates the general theme, that True Judgement
belongs to God, by giving an example:
-----------------------------------------------
Suppose a judge takes money from the Rich and incorrectly
gives it to the poor; then God will cause the poor to lose
that money and the rich gets it back
-----------------------------------------------

My point here is that Rashis example should be seen as
elaborating the GENERAL THEME that JUSTICE BELONGS TO GOD

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Again we emphasize the fundamental principle of Rabbi
Ishmael-Generalization: The essence of the method is
NOT to derive meaning from the words but rather to derive
meaning by using poetic license on the overall structure
and in effect twisting the meaning so that each phrase
reflects one facet of the general theme.

*11 Rashi gives an alternate explanation
-------------------------------------
Dont interrupt litigants while delivering their case
-------------------------------------

Rashi however did not intend this as a true alternative
meaning. Rather Rashi used the alternative meaning as
a vehicle to show the general idea of interpreting the
phrase DONT BE AFRAID OF ANY PERSON to refer to EQUAL
TREATMENT OF ALL LITIGANTS. So two ways of showing
this equal treatment is
- treat rich and poor alike
- dont interrupt people while delivering their cases

Rashi supplements this alternate interpretation with a pun
on the Hebrew ThaGuRu and this is consistent with
our theme of using GENERALIZATION to justify POETIC LICENSE
