SUCCINT SUMMARY
---------------
One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain word meanings
the same way the dictionary explains word meanings.
Rashi had a variety of methods to infer meaning. A
fundamental method of meaning inference was to use
collections of verses with the target word

EXAMPLE - The word/root PRZ
--------------------------------------------
The following verses clearly show that PRZ
means a Non-fortressed city

- We conquered both FORTRESSED cities BESIDES PRZ
- Jerusalem will be a PRZ withOUT A FORTRESS

Other verses lend support
- The capital city fought 2 days; the PRZ fought 1
- Road and PRZ ceased in Israel

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain
Grammar the same way modern Grammar books do.
Grammar deals with many topics In this posting
we deal with the grammatical rules governing
sentences. Most Biblical verses are complete
sentences. However in certain rare cases TWO
Verses form ONE sentence.

EXAMPLE: Dt01-29:33
-------------------
- Dont be afraid of these nations
- - - God will fight for you
- - - like He faught in Egypt
- - - Like he led you in Wilderness
- But IN THIS MATTER you dont believe in God
- - Who walks before you and helps you

All Rashi does is assert that IN THIS MATTER
refers back to DONT BE AFRAID OF THESE NATIONS

By so doing Rashi shows the underlying unity
of these verses as forming one sentence stating
that JEWS HAVENT LEARNED FROM ALL THE MIRACLES

Dont be afraid of these nations
God will fight for you*1
like He faught in Egypt*2
Like He led you in Wilderness
But IN THIS MATTER*3
you dont believe in God
Who walks before you
and helps you
COMMENTS
*1 GOD WILL FIGHT FOR YOU is a REASON why you shouldnt
be afraid of these nations

*2 GODS FIGHTING FOR YOU IN EGYPT is an EXAMPLE of how
God fights for you

*3 Rashis comment is that IN THIS MATTER refers back
to Moses original statement: DONT BE AFRAID OF THESE
NATIONS By so connecting the two verses we see that
Rashis main point is that Dt01-29:33 is a multi verse
sentence reprimanding the Jews for lack of faith in God

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 5 main goals is to explain meaning the same
way a dictionary explains meaning. Rashi had a variety
of vehicles to explain meaning In this posting we review
the methods by which NOUNS/ADJECTIVES become VERBS and
vice verse.

EXAMPLE Ex27-03b
----------------
DESHEN means DUST; LeDaShayN means TO DUST(To remove dust)

EXAMPLE Dt01-41a
----------------
TO READY oneself means to MAKE oneself ready

Thus in one case the verb from the noun connotes REMOVAL
(to DUST) while in the other it connotes CREATION(to READY)

--------- ------------------------------------ --------
To hammar Do Standard activity done with hammar Standard
To screw Do Standard activity done with screws Standard
To fan Do Standard activity done with a Fan Standard
To Dough Do standard activity with DOUGH*7 Standard
To Fly FLYING-Standard activity of Housefly Standard
To Straw GATHER straw(Standard straw activity)*8 Standard
COMMENTS
*1 eg To FIRE a furnace

*2 Ex16-20b

*3 Ex19-12a

*4 Ex28-39a EMBROIDER the pants of LINEN
means make them embroidered

*5 Nu04-13b, Ex27-03b

*6 Lv17-04a

*7 As we have explained it TO DOUGH would mean
to BAKE. Actually we need another step. A verb
can refer to its ACTIVITY FORM. So the 2 steps are
- DOUGH becomes TO DOUGH=to BAKE
- TO DOUGH becomes TO SWELL (form of DOUGH rising)
See LIST814a for more details

*8 Ex05-07a Ex05-07b

*9 Thus YOU READIED YOURSELF TO FIGHT (Dt01-41a) means
that you said WE ARE READY TO FIGHT (That is the
Jews created or transformed themselves into a state
of readiness)

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10
We present 3 methods by which OBJECTS (Nouns) acquire
ACTIVITY (verb) meaning
- eg To RECORD = to CREATE a RECORD
- eg To DUST = to REMOVE dust
- eg To HAMMER = do STANDARD ACTIVITY of hammar

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain the
meaning of words the same way a dictionary
explains the meaning of words.

One vehicle of word meaning presented by Rashi
is the two letter root theory. As everyone
know the Hebrew language is based on 3 letter
roots which are CONJUGATED in various ways.

For example the root S-M-R can mean,
I WATCHED (ShMaRTi), YOU WILL WATCH (TiShMoR)
etc based on conjugation.

In addition to the 3 letter theory Rashi believed
in the 2 Letter root theory--that is 3 letter
roots govern GRAMMATICAL conjugation while
2 letter roots govern MEANING. Every 3 letter
root has a meaning that is determined by the
meanings of the 1 and 2 letter roots comprising
the root.

For example: The letter NUN denotes INTENSITY,
ALOT, or INTRINSICness. The list below illustrates
this.

EXAMPLE
-------
- Tauv-Caph means INSIDE. Tauv-NUN-Caph therefore
means ALOT INSIDE--in fact Tauv-NUN-Caph denotes
the soft inside of the ear.

EXAMPLE
-------
- BO denotes INSIDE. Beth-Hey-NUN means
INTRINSIC to INSIDENESS. In fact, the Bo-Hen
denotes the THUMB the organ that enables
one to hold an object (The thumb opposes the
other fingers and enables held objects to
be inside the fist)

COMMENTS
*1 This is onomatopoeia (word meaning by sound)
Another (famous) Hebrew example is BAK-BOOK for
BOTTLE (Water coming out of a bottle sounds
like BAK-BOOK BAK BOOK)

*2 A-G-R is said to mean GATHERING but more specifically
refers to HARVESTING (eg. Dt28-39 -- you will not drink
or harvest wine)

*3 D-Sh-A refers to HERBIAGE -- minor field growth.
A PLUMP/FAT person could be said that
--------------------------------------
HIS field (stomach) IS GROWING WILDLY
--------------------------------------

Note that D-Sh-N does frequently mean FAT

Also note that FIELD can refer to STOMACH
(Songs07-03)

*4 Cf Ex21-18 If men FIGHT and one hits the other with a
stone or a fist....

*5 Just like the English metaphor for TESTING/INVESTIGATION
-- LETS LOOK INTO IT --

*6 The ChShN was one of the eight PRIESTLY garments.
The ChShN held the URIM vTUMIM -- these were
lettered ornaments with prophetic capacity. When
the High Priest asked a question of God he would
get the answer by having a vision of the ChShN
with the letters answering his question lit up on
the URIM.

Hence the ChShN containing the URIM vTUMIM enabled
the High Priest to FEEL OUT (ChSh) a case -- compare
the similar English FEELING OUT A CASE

*7 The word SRN refers both to the GOVERNOR as well
as to the STATE over which he governs (Cf Joshua 13:3)
SR by itself refers to any leader. Hence GOVERNOR
(Srn) is an INTENSE (N) Leader (SR) or the PINACLE
of LEADERSHIP

*8 Throughout the Bible if you want to state that
someone was KNOWN for something then you
state that the person was the CHILD OF it.
eg RIF RAFS are called CHILDS OF NO-NAME

*9 Functionally, the THUMB opposes other fingers
and enables humans to grasp objects. Hence
the THUMB enables things to be held INSIDE
ones hand
LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Some scholars interpret a terminal NUN as indicating
LESS -- but it should be clear from this example --
YRVN vs RV -- that a terminal NUN indicates INTENSITY
(DISPUTE - FIGHT)
