*1 Rashi states the following: "If MOTHERS make mistakes it
is because they raise children; if SINGLE women make
mistakes it is because they try to pick people up"
Rashi should be perceived as giving ILLUSTRATIONS of
why being without children is disgraceful for women

*2 Jacob did not NEED permission to leave with HIS wife
But his father-in-law would perceive it as STEALING
his daughter.

*3 Gn27-41 states that Esauv hated Jacob for stealing the
blessing. Gn27-44 states that after a few years this
hatred would subside. Hence Gn33-09 with its statement
I DONT NEED YOUR MONEY confirms these other 2 verses.

*4 Rashi is NOT commenting on the MERE coincidence that
Shimon and Levi are called BROTHERS in two places.
-Gn49-05 talks about Shimon and Levi KILLING and
PLUNDERING
-Gn34 also talks about SHIMON and Levi KILLING
and plundering.
Thus the cross reference is clear. The accident
that they are called BROTHERS in both places
simply spices up the correspondence.

*5 There is also an element of IDIOM (NEW MEANING HERE)
That is Lv25-25:26 speaks about the REDEEMER(=Nearest
of Kin) while Nu35-19 speaks about the BLOOD REDEEMER
However the concepts are similar....the REDEEMER
in each case is the NEAREST OF KIN.

*6 Further support can be obtained from comparing the singular
and plural used in Nu14. All activities of the spies are
in plural (THEY did it) except for the arrival at Chevron
(HE came to Chevron). This suggests that only one spy came
to Chevron;--reasonably, this is Caleb who opposed the other
spies. It is also reasonable that he came there to pray
for strength to stand up to them (See LIST003a in posting
http://www.Rashiyomi.com/n22n7.htm)

*7 The Hebrew word used is AL. Thus the verse text
- bless AL Mount Grizim
could equally mean
- bless ON TOP of Mount Grizim (While standing on it)
or
- bless TOWARDS Mount Grizim (While standing at foot)
The Joshua verse clarifies WHICH meaning of AL is meant.

- P-Ch-D comes from Poh-Chad - SHARP and would refer to
e.g. getting GOOSE PIMPLES (Sharpnesses in skin) from
fear

- MoRaH comes from Y-R-A = vision = LONG TERM
apprehension over the future.*10


*2 - YOREH seems to comes from HRH to make pregnant. It
would look at the rain as ENABLING the seeds to grow

- MALKOSH seesm to come from LKSH - TO THE HARD(KSH)
GRAIN and would refer to a final softening rain

*3 It is hard to absolutely prove that
- A-V-H means FANTASIZE vs
- Ch-M-D means DESIRE ACQUISITION

The verses show that
- A-V-H is an act of the HEART while
- Ch-M-D is focused on ACQUIRING OBJECTS

For frequently Rashi explains synonyms without
reference to etymologies and even without reference
to verses. However some of the above etymologies seem
reasonable and may enrich our appreciation of the
synonyms.


*11 Rashi gives another etymology from the Aramaic.
However in this list we advocate the 2nd explanation
of Rashi over the 1st. Furthermore in this
particular case the 2nd explanation comes internally
from Hebrew while the 1st Rashi explanation INFERS
usage from Aramaic but does not EXPLAIN it.

*2 If one carefully looks at Rashi then
- His 1st explanation is that the verse should be
translated as PRECIOUS CLOTHES = CLEAN CLOTHES.

- Rashis 2nd explanation is that the verse should be
translated as COVETED CLOTHES = CLOTHES COVETED FROM
SOMEONE ELSE (Probably Nimrod whom Esauv hung out with)

In this email list we always accept Rashis 2nd
explanation - in other words

- Rashis first explanation Chmd=DESIRE superficially
ignores the difference between DESIRE/COVET (AVH=CHMD)

- Rashis 2nd explantion ChMD=COVET emphasizes the
nuances of ChMD=COVET.


*3 The verses states
- the fruit was DESIROUS TO THE EYES
- the fruit ENCOURAGES COVETNESS BY SHREWD STRATEGIES

The phrase
- DESIROUS TO THE EYES
refers to an EMOTIONAL longing consistent with our
way of taking the root AVH

The phrase
- ENCOURAGES COVETNESS BY SHREWD STATEGIES
indicates that the fruit creates a strong desire and
longing...the type of desire that makes one APPRECIATE
the difference between RIGHT  vs WRONGFUL coveting*11

This seems to be the simple meaning of the words in the
verse--here we seem to have discovered a new interpretation
which however is consistent with the verse.

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Rashi SEEMS to ALIGN the 3 DISCOVERIES of Eve after
eating the forbidden fruit with the 3 SEDUCTIVE
PROMISES of the Snake.  This ALIGNMENT will be
discussed in another issue For the moment we
focus on the fact that Rashi is ALSO using the
principle of SYNONYMS.

*11 We translate the earlier verse Gn03-04 where the
snake promises
- Your eyes will be opened (= Emotional desire)
- You will be like God
- APPRECIATING the difference between RIGHTFUL vs
WRONGFUL lusting

Here we translate Y-D-A as APPRECIATE (Which is
the appropriate Biblical translation of Y-D-A).

We also take SKL as SHREWD (an appropriate translation)

All in all--or bottom line--we take both phrases
- FRUIT ENCOURAGES COVETING BY SHREWD STRATEGIES
- YOU WILL APPRECIATE RIGHT vs WRONG
as indicating a strong desire to acquire the object
- the type of desire that encourages serious
thinking on HOT TO GET IT IN ANY WAY
