*10 QUESTION:If Rules are mechanical and anyone can master them they what is the greatness of the Gedolim.Isnt their greatness that they have tremendous insights that we dont have. ANSWER: NO!. The greatness of a Gadol is precisely that he has mastered the rules and can base his inferences on logic, not on subjectivity. It is a fundamental principle of Judaism that EVERYONE CAN MAKE IT. There is no such thing as a BORN GREAT person. Rather every person has GREATNESS accessible to him if they work at it. This is explicitly stated in the Bible It explicitly states in Dt30-11:14 --------------------------------------------------- For the law/commandments that I give you today is neither above you nor far away--it is not in heaven... it is not over a sea....that you should say who will get it for us...rather these words are CLOSE TO YOU BOTH IN MIND AND SPEECH to do ---------------------------------------------------- Perhaps an analogy with chess will help. 300 years ago people use to believe that chess masters were geniuses who had tremendous insights that ordinary people did not have. In other words, the Chess masters were sort of Gedolim. This was contradicted by a 30 year research project by an obscure person named Steinitz. Steinitz showed that there are CHESS RULES (just like there are RASHI RULES). Steinitz spent 30 years showing in his publications that games were won because rules were followed not because people were geniuses. And to continue the analogy: Steinitzs theories were eventually modified (Though his basic ideas remained) So too...I have continuously modified my Rashi rules. But the basic idea that Rashi-ing a text is a product of rules and mastery of skills--not of genius--must remain. Each and every person must believe that if they want to master these rules they can. This is a fundamental principle of Judaism. I hope this website makes people appreciate the mechanical nature of Rashi-ing a text and leads to greater appreciation of Rashi and Judaism. |

*1 Rashi states the following: "If MOTHERS make mistakes it is because they raise children; if SINGLE women make mistakes it is because they try to pick people up" Rashi should be perceived as giving ILLUSTRATIONS of why being without children is disgraceful for women *2 Jacob did not NEED permission to leave with HIS wife But his father-in-law would perceive it as STEALING his daughter. *3 Gn27-41 states that Esauv hated Jacob for stealing the blessing. Gn27-44 states that after a few years this hatred would subside. Hence Gn33-09 with its statement I DONT NEED YOUR MONEY confirms these other 2 verses. *4 Rashi is NOT commenting on the MERE coincidence that Shimon and Levi are called BROTHERS in two places. -Gn49-05 talks about Shimon and Levi KILLING and PLUNDERING -Gn34 also talks about SHIMON and Levi KILLING and plundering. Thus the cross reference is clear. The accident that they are called BROTHERS in both places simply spices up the correspondence. *5 There are many verses which explicitly confirm Lv06-05b - that the DAILY UP OFFERING must be the first offering of the day and the last (any other offerings must be offered strictly inbetween them). Here is a partial list of verses where this principle is enunciated Nu28-15,23,24,31 Nu29-06,11,16,22,25...Lv03-05*10
*10 Lv06-05b only speaks about THE UP..but in light of these other verses the word THE clearly refers to the DAILY UP. Rashi(following the Talmud) further declares -------------------------------------------- We also derive from this verse (Lv06-05b) That: Just as no offering can be offered BEFORE the DAILY UP (the DAILY UP must be the FIRST) so no offering can be offered AFTER the EVENING DAILY UP (the EVENING DAILY UP must be the LAST). -------------------------------------------- My own opinion is that Rashi simply indicates a derivation by analogical logic (not by verse derivation). In other words since all the other verses state ---------------------------------------- this offering must be offered AFTER (AL) the MORNING DAILY UP ---------------------------------------- we infer (by LOGIC, not by VERSE) that the EVENING DAILY UP should have a similar status (no offering offered AFTER) |

RASHIS COVERED: Nu10-30a Nu05-02c Lv22-05b Lv22-05d
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-04 | ||
SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Rashi frequently infers conclusions from the OVERALL PARAGRAPH structure and its development style EXAMPLE Lv22-04:07 Nu05-02 --------------------------- The above verses NATURALLY form a Biblical Paragraph that BULLETS possibilities of becoming IMPURE followed by a purification procedure. Here is the outline - INTRODUCTION: If a priest become impure thru - BULLET--1--- Leprosy - BULLET--2--- Unusual flows - BULLET--3--- Or if he touches someone UNCLEAN to the dead - BULLET--4--- Or a man with seminal flow - BULLET--5--- Or he touches a dead animal - BULLET--6--- Or he touches a man IN ANY STATE OF UNCLEANESS - CONCLUSION When he becomes impure he cant eat offerings As can be seen BULLETS (3) and (6) seem to refer to touching UNCLEAN men. Since this is a bulleted list it is natural to identify these as two cases: - BULLET 3 refers to a priest who touches someone who had touched a dead man - BULLET 6 refers to a priest who touches a dead man himself An almost similar Rashi applies to Nu05-02c - SEND OUT OF THE CAMP - BULLET A: any LEPOR - BULLET B: any person with UNUSUAL FLOWS - BULLET C: any person UNCLEAN TO THE SPIRIT Thus bullet A corresponds to bullet 1 above Similarly Bullet B corresponds to Bullet 2 above We conclude that Bullet C corresponds to Bullets 3 and 6. That is the BULLETED structure leads us to interpret the words UNCLEAN TO SPIRIT to refer to UNCLEAN BY CONTACT WITH A DEAD PERSON WHOSE SPIRIT HAS LEFT HIM(Or contact with a person who touched a dead body) We infer further items from the 2 bulleted structures. - We infer that BULLET B includes both unusual and usual flows (Bullets 2 and 4) - We infer that BULLET C includes bullets 3,5,6--that is contact with anything dead. This method of inference--based on broad paragraph design differs from the traditional methods--say that of the Malbim, -- who makes these inferences from INDIVIDUAL WORDS (vs PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE)--that is the phrases ALL people with flow and ALL people with uncleanness to the spirit implies that ALL unclean people are included in the law. EXAMPLE Nu10-30a ---------------- Jethro refuses Moses offer to stay with the Jewish people. Jethro explains that he must return - TO my LAND - TO my BIRTHPLACE The repeated KEYWORD, TO, has a bullet like effect It indicates two reasons for returning to ones country. Rashi further explains these two reasons - LAND=place of contacts for JOBS - BIRTHPLACE=Place of family members

BULLET-5 | dead animal | C | Unclean to spirit
BULLET-6 | ANY STATE OF UNCLEANESS*1 | C | Unclean to spirit
*1 The precise Rashi argument is as follows - The paragraph structure CLEARLY shows a BULLETED LIST - Hence we are justified in identifying each BULLET as a separate item - But bullets 3 and 6 seem to refer to contact with humans - So Rashi interprets bullet 3 as a priest who touches a person who touched a dead body - but bullet 6 refers to a priest who touches a dead body Furthermore, since bullet 6 states IN ANY UNCLEAN STATE we are justified in including all unclean human states (CONTACT WITH DEAD, LEPROSY, UNUSUAL FLOW)*10 *2 Of course verse Nu05-02 only lists Bullets A,B,C once. I have repeated them to show the correspondence with Lv22-04:07. The paragraph design itself suggests that the 3 Bullets of Nu05-02 (A,B,C) refer to the same class of items in Bullets 1,2,3,4,5,6 in Lv22-04:07. That is both paragraphs refer to the same classes of unclean people - Lepors - People with flows (Unusual or ordinary) - Contact with dead (Dead people,dead animals,or people who touched dead people) We clearly see here that the inference is based on PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE vs NUANCES OF WORDS *11
*10 LIST005n presents the five meanings of ALL (one of which is ANY which indicates that ANY uncleanness can be included - NO EXCEPTION) *11 This method of inference--based on broad paragraph design differs from the traditional methods--say that of the Malbim, -- who makes these inferences from INDIVIDUAL WORDS (vs PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE)--that is Malbim infers from the phrases--ALL people with flow and ALL people with uncleanness to the spirit--Malbim infers from these phrases that we include ALL unclean people(Unusual vs ordinary flows etc). I believe this example hilights the difference between my approach (Emphasis on paragraph structure and broad sweeping design) vs the traditional approach of say Nechama Leibowitz, Rabbi Boncheck, or Malbim. While there might be sympathy for making inferences from the word ALL, I think that my position, that inferences can be made from PARAGRAPH DESIGN is equally cogent. In passing I would answer Malbim as follows: - The sifrah in Lv22-04:07 clearly derives from the word - ALL that the laws apply eg to other unclean people such as - those who have had contact with a lepor - (vs the lepor himself) Since the Sifrah makes this - inference in Leviticus I think a similar inference is - justified in Numbers. At any rate to summarize: - The references of the Bullets in Lv and Nu are made, according to me, based on broad paragraph design. Both sets of bullets refer to the same items - Malbim however infers the sameness of reference based on the meaning and nuances of individual words like ALL which indicates broad meaning. - I go further and infer from the word ALL that all other unclean people are included in these laws. This is a fundamental difference in approach--carefully review this and understand it. |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 5 main goals is to indicate paragraph structure. One method of paragraph structure is to use the CLIMAX method to infer meaning That is, the ASSUMED CLIMACTIC development of a paragraph theme forces inference of meaning from the paragraph structure EVEN if the individual words dont justify this. EXAMPLE Nu09-22a ---------------- Nu09-20:22 has the GENERAL theme that the CLOUD of GLORY could stay ANY LENGTH OF TIME and then depart. This GENERAL theme is developed as follows: GENERAL Nu09-20 The cloud could stay ANY NUMBER OF DAYS DETAIL Nu09-21 - the cloud could stay..TWELVE HOUR PERIOD DETAIL Nu09-21 - or it could stay......DAY AND NIGHT DETAIL Nu09-22 - or if the cloud stays TWO DAYS DETAIL Nu09-22 - or .................. A MONTH DETAIL Nu09-22 - or .................. DAYS Rashi: The CLIMACTIC development - 12 hours - 24 hours - 2 days - Month - DAYS clearly shows that the word DAYS means a YEAR (Even though DAYS by itself normally does not mean a YEAR) Here Rashi infers meaning from PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE and CLIMACTIC development (but not from the meaning of the words involved). This is a fundamental principle! Understand it.
