*2 A nifty example is presented below where we distinguish
clearly between what Rashi forces and what Rashi posits
as reasonable. Hence this Rashi is a good example of
approach.

*10 QUESTION: You believe all Rashis are logical? What
do you with Rashi-s Gematrioth (Number patterns)

ANSWER: I assume the number-pattern is just a clever
mnemonic to remember the Rashi but Rashi-s real
point is grammatical.

For example on Gn32-05 Rashi states the the verse
JACOB INNED BY LABAN implies that Jacob observed
all 613 commandments.

Here Rashi makes a numerical pun since the number
value of the Hebrew word GARTI (Inned) is 613.

But Rashi-s real derivation comes from the fact
that there are two words for living in a place:
RESIDE and INN and TO INN implies TEMPORARINESS
(Here Jacob felt uncomfortable because he observed
the commandments while Laban was a scoundrel).

One of Rashis 5 main goals is the explanation of dictionary
meaning. Rashi had a variety of vehicles to explain meaning.

EXAMPLE: UNIFYING MEANING Nu13-28a
------------------------------------
The Hebrew root Beth-Tzade-Resh has a unifying theme
of GATHERING / PROTECTING. Hence it can mean
- a FORTRESSED city (People gathered in and protected)
- HARVESTING grapes (Gathering them into a protected place)
- NOT DENIED (When I have gathered all my needs)

EXAMPLE: Naming by Form or Function Nu15-38a

The Hebrew root Tzade-Yud-Tzade primarily refers to the
act of SPROUTING and hence can refer to any PROTRUSION. It
can also eg mean to GLARE at something (as in the English
- eyes BULGING out). The strings on garments, named Tzitzith
are so named BOTH because of their
- FORM (They look like PROTRUSIONS from the garments)
- FUNCTION (Their purpose is to be GLARED at to remind
one of the commandments one must perform)

*1 The priamry meaning of Tzitzh is SPROUT. However
there are a number of derived meanings such as LOCKS,
GLARE, PROTRUSIONS

*2 Tzitzith have the FORM of PROTRUSIONS and the FUNCTION
to be glared at to remind one to do the commandments.

the FORM/FUNCTION approach would be U.N vs PENTAGON --

*1 The original meaning of the word Q-W-M is to
AWAKE. From this it means STAND UP. When applied
to inanimate objects it refers to a vertical standing

*2 Demons in dreams often appear with HORNS Hence
it is reasonable to call them GOATS

*3 This root seems to be very controversial.
For example some people (Radack cites them) suggest
that the root is Zayin-Nun (WEAPON) with an added
prefix of Aleph.

Hence Rav Hirsch suggests that the etymology is
PERSONAL (ALEPH) WEAPONS.

I would simply say that the UTENSIL BELT with
hanging cases on both sides looks like 2 ears
on a head. Thus the meaning is based on FORM.*10



*4 The verse literally is translated as follows

These are the only 4 occurences in the Bible.

Both NECKLACES and QUILTS have the FORM of

*7 The root GIMEL-BETH can mean PUDDLE or HIGH (Puddles
are HIGH spots on the ground). I think the HAIR on
a persons head and the LINT on a new wool garment
resemble a PUDDLE OF HAIR LIKE PROTRUSIONS. Again
the emphasis is on naming by form. *13

the metaphor of HIDING ADVICE is similar to the tone
at 2S15-31.

Suffice it to say that there is much controversy
on all the proper meaning of all these verses. However
our translation of Nu04-20 seems to be standard

*12 One subtle point about seductresses using quilts:
The quilt is both a COVER and an EXPOSURE (because
of the many air spaces in the quilt). Hence
a seductress COVERED with a quilt also EXPOSES herself
(and thereby seduces).

Rashi: Only Caleb went to Chevron--apparently to
pray there that he should not be enticed by the
other spies to slander Israel

Note the force of the list--Rashi cannot be perceived
as homily---it is the simple meaning of the text.

*1 Two observations:

CALEB is not mentioned in the verse
- But whoever it was, that person came to Chevron
- We know from Ju01-20 that Caleb inherited Chevron
- We know from Dt01-36 that God promised him the
land he stepped on
So it is reasonable that the HE refers to Caleb
At any rate the SINGULAR (vs the plural in all
the other verses) clearly shows that only ONE
person came to Chevron

We are not told WHY Caleb came to Chevron. But
Rashis observation

He came to pray that he should not be enticed
by the slander of the other spies
---------------------------------------------
seems reasonable. After all
- Caleb did disagree with all the spies
- People frequently pray on graves for
strength to stand up to pressure

Notice, how in our explanation of Rashi, we have

- the FORCING GRAMMATICAL RULE - HE vs THEY
- the REASONABLE SUPPOSITIONS-Caleb came to pray
This is fundamental in understanding Rashi.
