COMMENTS
*1 Several people have asked me for a website FAQ telling
people where to go for various things.

Accordingly I am going to do one Q&A (Question and Answer)
per issue until the FAQ is ready.

IF DURING THIS PROCESS YOU WOULD LIKE A PARTICULAR
ISSUE ADDRESSED (eg How do I...) FEEL FREE TO EMAIL
ME AT rjhendel@Juno.com. (The question will be published
in your name unless you ask me to preserve anonymity)

Todays Q&A may be found in the green footnote section in
footnote *10

*10 QUESTION: Do you ever make mistakes? How are they corrected?
Does the fact that you make mistakes contradict
your statement that mastery of Rashi rules is
a major prerequisite to becoming Known in Torah.

ANSWER: Yes I make mistakes. Mistakes typically can happen
when generalizations are based on insufficient examples.

For example a few months ago I claimed that the
Hebrew root Aleph-Lamed-Hey (ALH) had two meanings
- GO UP (ALH EL)
- WITHDRAW (NaALH M)
In other words either the root was in ACTIVE MODE
with the preposition TO (EL) or the root was
in PASSIVE MODE with preposition M (FROM). Therefore
- ALH EL means GO UP TO
- NAALH M means WITHDRAW FROM

But then I looked at more examples and found 5 more
Rashis. I in fact found 4 meanings to ALH
- ALH EL means GO UP TO
- ALH EL can also mean GO UP TO A SPIRITUALLY BETTER PLACE
- NaALH M means WITHDRAW from a bad situation
- ALH M means BOTH withdraw from a bad situation and go
to a better one (NaALH M emphasizes WITHDRAWAL without
a suitable alternative)

Notice how originally I claimed that the ACTIVE TENSE
with the preposition FROM could not happen.

This is simply wrong (A mistake). The active tense with
the preposition FROM occurs quite often.

To correct this mistake I simply added more examples
to LIST901e. Both postings are kept on the Rashi website.
If however you are reviewing several postings on the
same Rashi chances are that the LAST POSTING has the
more comprehensive solution.

In this way -- keeping tabs on past lists and updating
them -- I can manage over time to eliminate most mistakes.

Making mistakes does not contradict being Knowledgeable
of Torah. Indeed, because I had correctly classified this
Rashi as an example of MEANING BY ROOT+PREPOSITION I could
immediately locate it and correct it.

This approach to mistakes is fundamental to becoming
well versed in Torah and every student should develop
similar approaches to their mistakes.

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 5 main goals is the teaching of grammar the same
way grammar books teach grammar. Rashi will sometimes show how
the verb-root in different MODES can mean different things. Here,
Rashi can be aided by skillful use of PREPOSITIONAL connectives.

EXAMPLE
-------
The root Aleph-Lamed-Hey (ALH) has four meanings depending on
- the MODE (Active / Passive)
- The PREPOSITIONAL CONNECTIVE (FROM / TO)

The four meanings are as follows

EXAMPLE Gn32-37 ACTIVE MODE + TO
--------------------------------
...the DAWN has come up

EXAMPLE Dt17-08f ACTIVE MODE + TO
---------------------------------
If you GO UP TO THE TEMPLE

Here the idea is that the TEMPLE is a SPIRITUALLY Higher
place and hence you GO UP TO IT (True Jerusalem is higher
than the rest of Israel but the main focus is on the
spiritual height)

EXAMPLE-Nu16-24a PASSIVE-FROM = WITHDRAW
----------------------------------------
e.g. WITHDRAW from the WICKED Korach group

Here the emphasis is on LEAVING a bad situation
without necessarily having a good alternative.

EXAMPLE Ex32-01d ACTIVE FROM
----------------------------
GET AWAY FROM the Golden calf place and GO UP TO ISRAEL

Here the emphasis is BOTH on withdrawing from a bad situation
and going to a better place.

Ex01-10c ACTIVE*5 FROM We-ll be THROWN OUT OF OUR LAND(TO another)
COMMENTS
*1 In these verses A-L-H TO means not so much PHYSICALLY
going up; but rather GOING TO A PLACE OF HIGHER
SPIRITUALITY (Examples are going to TEMPLE, ISRAEL...)

*2 The emphasis in these verses is twofold
- not where you are going TO
- but am emphasis on withdrawing FROM a place
- a further emphasis on lack of a place to go to
In other words you are withdrawing from a bad situation
without necessarily having a better alternative

*3 These verses emphasize simultaneous
- WITHDRAWAL from a bad situation
- GOING TO a better situation

*4 Rashi on this verse emphasizes the two nuances of GO UP FROM
a) Judah talked against murdering Joseph
b) Judah ALSO suggested a better solution (Sell him into
slavery)

*5 My interpretation (Egypt will be thrown out to a BETTER
land) probably seems a bit radical.

But dont forget this was the government talking and
politicians are basically conservative. It is unreasonable
to assume that they were worried about a takeover.

A more reasonable fear is that as the Jews multiplied at
a faster rate, the Egyptians would be forced to expand
their economy in other areas outside Egypt...Thus many
Egyptians would migrate to other lands possibly with
better jobs but overall the Jews would stay in Egypt
while the percentage of Egyptians would decline.

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis main goals is the explanation of meaning
the same way a dictionary explains meaning. One method
of explaining meaning is to indicate a UNIFIED meaning
to a Biblical root with many meanings.

EXAMPLE Nu17-03b Nu17-04a Ex39-03a
----------------------------------
The Hebrew roots Resh-Kuf-Ayin has a unified meaning of
- FLATTEN
Hence it can mean
- FLATTEN
- PRESS
- The SKY (Which looks like a covering that was FLATTEND
on to the heavenly cealing)

The root R-K-A undoubtedly comes from the root Resh-Yud-Kuf
which means THIN.
