RabbiIshmael | INFERRENCE FROM CONTEXT is aided by ALIGNMENT*2
*1 Notice the remarkable fact that although ALL THREE inferences made from an alignment of the five animal pairs in Gn32-15:16 occurs in two different places - two of the Rashis occur in Gn32 - one of the Rashis occurs in Gn30,another chapter This is typical of Rashi...very often the REASON for a Rashi does not lie in the verse but in another verse See posting Gn30-35b *2 Note also that our use of ALIGNMENT to infer meaning Rabbi Ishmael has a CONTEXT rule. INFERRENCE of meaning can be made FROM CONTEXT We have explained HOW INFERENCE FROM CONTEXT is made--inference from context is made by ALIGNMENT |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Rashi frequently makes powerful inferences from the alignment of ALMOST similar verses. The minor variations between these almost similar verses suggests nuances and differences or even meaning. EXAMPLE Is47-02 --------------- - UNCOVER your FARHEAD - X$P---- your LEGS - UNCOVER your THIGHS cross the river From the alignment we infer that the Hebrew root X$P means EXPOSE or UNCOVER (Rashi: Gn30-37e) EXAMPLE Gn30-37b ---------------- - Jacob TOOK------- a branch - Jacob PCLed------ white PCLs - Jacob EXPOSED the white of the branches From the alignment we infer that the Hebrew root PCL means TO PEAL. Thus - the verb form is TO PEEL - the noun form is PEELS Note that the Hebrew root PCL only incurs in this verse and therefore the only method of inferring its meaning is from alignment. Note also that our use of ALIGNMENT to infer meaning corresponds to the Rabbi Ishmael rule of INFERRENCE FROM CONTEXT In this case we have explained HOW INFERENCE FROM CONTEXT is made--inference from context is made by alignment.

Differs | *1 | *2 | *3 | |
*1 Same in all phrases *2 From the alignment we infer that PCL means TO PEEL - PCLed*10 = verb form = TO PEEL - PCLs*10 = noun form = PEELs *3 These supplementary phrases support the contention that Jacob PEELED the branches EXPOSING their white bark
*10 We are of course mixing Hebrew and English here. - The ED in PCLed is simply a way of indicating a verb form - the S in PCLs is simply a away of indicating a noun form The actual Hebrew is WIPCL-vs PCLed and PCLWT vs PCLs |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Rashi frequently makes powerful inferences from the alignment of ALMOST similar verses. The minor variations between these almost similar verses suggests nuances and differences or even meaning. EXAMPLE Gn32-15:16 ------------------ The text of Gn32-15:16 is as follows - 200 Goats 20 TI$ - 200 Female sheep 20 Rams - 30 Camels & children - 40 Female cows 10 Oxen - 20 Donkeys 10 &IR Notice how FEMALE COWS are mentioned before OXEN. Therefore from the alignment of the above 2 columns of animal pairs we infer that - the TI$ is the Hebrew word for MALE GOAT (Gn30-35b) - the &IR is the Hebrew word for the MALE DONKEY (Gn32-16b) From the blatant contrast that CAMELS are mentioned with children but not with males, we infer that the Camels led a FAMILY LIFE with a 1:1 male:female ration and with one child per family. Notice the contrast of COARSENESS vs DISCRETION - e.g. for goats the Torah mentions a 1:10 male:female ratio-- this is an example of COARSE description - for camels the Torah mentions the CAMELS and CHILDREN-- this is an example of DISCRETE description. In general the Torah urges us to moral norms by requiring behaviors (such as discretion) even towards animals and inanimate objects

*1 CAMELS and CHILDREN implies a FAMILY LIFE. So CAMELS mated one to one with one child (In contrast to other animals such as goats which had a 1:10 ratio) Thus the Torah teaches us to be discrete when talking about modestly behaving people*11
*10 Notice the remarkable fact that although ALL THREE inferences presented in this list come from an alignment of Gn32-15:16 nevertheless - two of the Rashis occur in Gn32 - one of the Rashis occurs in Gn30,another chapter This is typical of Rashi...very often the REASON for a Rashi does not lie in the verse but in another verse *11 See LIST604a Notice the contrast of COARSENESS vs DISCRETION - e.g. for goats the Torah COARSELY mentions a 1:10 male:female ratio-- - for camels the Torah discretely mentions the CAMELS and CHILDREN-- From this we infer that the CAMELS led a family life--they mated one on one with one child. The Torah treats these animals discretely by not mentioning mating ratios but mentioning children The implication for us is that we should speak discretely about modest couples |

SUCCINT SUMMARY --------------- One of Rashis main goals is the explanation of meaning similar to the function of a dictionary. Rashi had 10 distinct vehicles for explaining meaning. Today we examine how one act--for example COMPLETION--can be perceived from TWO perspectives--e.g. when you COMPLETE your life you die EXAMPLE Gn30-28a ---------------- The Hebrew root NQB means TO MAKE A NAIL HOLE. This gives rise to two different sets of meanings - HOLE--WOMAN---TO CURSE(Make EMPTY/make with HOLES) - FIX/SET--fix place for nail; FIX Wages; FIX law;

HEBREW | MEANS | PERSPECTIVE 1 | MEANS | PERSPECTIVE 2 | MEANS
QDX | sparks | appearance | SPARKling | Feeling | Sick*1

NQB | Nail hole | Positive | Fix/Fit | Negative | Hole*4
TM | complete | Positive | finish | Negative | die*2
*1 QDX refers to a Sickness characterized by BURNING THROBS like a feeling of SPARKS inside onself *2 This is a universal phenomenon in both Hebrew and other languages. For example the Hebrew roots - GMR - CLH also both mean to COMPLETE/FINISH or TO DESTROY *3 Note that this double meaning ruler:King exists in English also. The King MEASURES how much each of his subjects should get *4 From the basic meaning of HOLE we get - awl- instrument for making a hole - woman - to curse (equals to WISH EMPTINESS and HOLLOWNESS) From the basic meaning of FIX/FIT we obtain - Fixing a place for the nail - Fixing wages Gn30-28a - Fixing/setting a word--clear pronunciation Lv24-11a - Fixing/Setting a status - (you who are SET at the top of the nations (Am06-01) or A new name which God will SET for you (Is62-02) *5 Rashi Gn30-38d*10
*10 Rashi makes a further point that the Hebrew verb used ----------- L-IX-MNH ----------- takes on a FEMININE suffix. So the PATCHED sticks (Resembling PATCHED females) - did not arouse the males - but rather aroused the females. The males seeing aroused females then had children by them. All this is inferred from the FEMALE SUFFIX: NH in L-IX-MNH |
