SUCCINCT SUMMARY ------------------ One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain Grammar the same way modern textbooks do. We call this the Rashi rule of GRAMMAR Although a major part of GRAMMAR deals with the conjugation of verbs, there are other parts of GRAMMAR. One important GRAMMAR SUBRULE in the rule governing either - how PARAGRAPHS are ORGANIZED in an essay or - how SENTENCES are ORGANIZED in a paragraph That is, why does one sentence or paragraph come after another sentence or paragraph? Rashi knew 4 methods of connecting consecutive paragraphs or consecutive sentences - CAUSE - ENABLEMENT - CONTRAST - UNIFYING THEME We call this the submethod of CONSECUTIVE PARAGRAPHS EXAMPLE Ex08-19a ---------------- The Biblical text states ---------------------------------------------------------- And I, God, will DISTINGUISHING the Jews from the Egyptians on that day [the plague will not affect them] so that you, Pharoh, may know that I am God And I will place a REDEMPTION ---------------------------------------------------------- Rashi comments --------------------------------------------------- That is, the DISTINGUISHING of the Jews--preventing the plague from coming on them--is what will give them REDEMPTION --------------------------------------------------- In other words Rashi sees the DISTINGUISHING OF THE JEWS as the CAUSE of the REDEMPTION LIST061a presents other Rashis that concentrate on causal connection EXAMPLE Ex08-21a ------------------------------ The Biblical text states as follows ---------------------------------------------------- PHAROH: OK Moses you can offer to your God in the LAND MOSES: But Egyptians hate offerings to God MOSES: Let us take a 3 day journey to the DESERT to offer ---------------------------------------------------- Rashi states ---------------------------------------------- Pharohs initial request to allow the Jews to offer by LAND, contrasts with Moses follow up request to offer in the DESERT. Hence we interpret - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - OFFER TO GOD IN THE LAND - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - to mean - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - OFFER TO GOD WHERE YOU ARE (vs journeying to the wilderness) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - --------------------------------------------- Thus Rashi here uses the method of CONTRASTING PARAGRAPHS. LIST061b below presents other Rashis based on the principle of CONTRASTING PARAGRAPHS.

Ex08-19a | Separate Jews | Give them a redemption
Gn35-01a | Dinah is raped | Prophetic order to leave*6
Gn33-13c | Young Sheep | IF pushed they will die*7
Gn29-01a | God WITH Jacob | Jacob travelled SMOOTHLY*5
Nu06-02a | Adulterous wife rite | Nazaarite from wine*1
Gn38-01a | Brothers sell Joseph | Judah leaves brothers*1
Gn23-03c | Abraham offers Isaac | Sarah dies*1
Gn02-20a | Adam Eve are Naked | Snake gives Eve Apple*2
Lv10-02a | Non-allowed sac | Death of Aarons sons*3
Lv10-02a | Death of Aarons sons | No wine to serving priest*3
Lv10-03d | Death of Righteous | God honored*4
|
|||
*1 Thus "whoever see the humiliating Adulterous wife rite" will be so shocked that he will abstain from wine Similarly "Judah advised his brothers to sell Joseph" and so when they regretted it they blaimed him and he had to "separate from them." Similarly "Sarah died" from the shock that "Abraham offered Isaac." *2 In other words because the snake saw Adam and Eve naked therefore he became Jealous and wanted Adam killed so he could marry Eve. ALthough this sounds a bit wild there is strong supporting evidence. Gn04-01 uses the past perfect form And Adam HAD BEEN FAMILIAR with his wife & they had a child" So the sequence of chapters is Adam was lonely God makes Eve Adam and Eve are naked ------------------------"Snake tempts Eve" Adam has a child with Eve Thus the sequence of chapters (Naked--->child) is clearly interrupted by the Snake story. *3 As explained above Rashi sees these two views as complementary - First they drank wine and got drunk - While drunk they thought it permissable to offer sacrifices which should not be offered Hence they died for both crimes *4 Rashi explains the Causal connection - when the masses see that God EVEN kills the righteous for sins - then they are aware how they must also observe Gods commandments - This leads to more honor for God *5 So GOOD NEWS facilitates/causes SMOOTH TRAVEL(Rashi) *6 The full sequence of chapters is as follows -------------------------------------------- - Gn31 God orders Jacob to return to his fathers house - Gn32 But Jacob is afraid of Being with Brother Esauv - Gn33 Jacob journeys instead to Succoth - Gn34 Dinah gets raped - Gn35 God tells Jacob to return to BethEl ------------------------------------------- Rashi notes that ----------------------------- If Jacob had IMMEDIATELY fulfilled the order of Travelling to his fathers house he wouldnt have stayed in Succoth and his Daughter would not have gotten raped. ------------------------------ Thus Rashi sees a CAUSAL connection between the chapters. Dinah was raped because Jacob did not IMMEDIATELY fulfill the prophetic order. Note Rashi expresses the same theme ------------------------------------------------- Because he delayed doing the prophecy immediately therefore he was punished that certain bad occurrences happened to him ------------------------------------------------- Rashi expresses this same theme on Gn35-22a where we find that Reuven inteferred with his fathers marital life. *7 Rashi can be better understood with the EXPORT-IMPORT LAW of logic. The EXPORT-IMPORT law states that ---------------------------------------------------- IF [it rains] then if [I go out] THEN [I will get wet] ---------------------------------------------------- has the same meaning as ---------------------------------------------------- IF [it rains] and [I go out] THEN [I will get wet] ---------------------------------------------------- In other words Rashi identifies the two sentence forms - IF p THEN IF q THEN r - IF p & q THEN r This identification of NESTED CONDITIONALS with a CONJUNCTIVE HYPOTHESIS is called the EXPORT-IMPORT law. The actual Biblical text reads --------------------------------------------- The cattle is young AND they will be pushed one day AND they will die --------------------------------------------- Rashi simply points out (Using EXPORT-IMPORT) that we can interpret this as either --------------------------------------------- [IF] The cattle is young AND they will be pushed one day THEN they will die --------------------------------------------- or --------------------------------------------- IF The cattle is young IF they will be pushed one day THEN they will die --------------------------------------------- The above two translations use the well known Biblical principle that the Hebrew letter VAV can refer to any connective. |

*1 Rashi not only connects 2 paragraphs. He also connects all Biblical paragraphs in this chapter. See footnote *10 for further details *2 Dt28 gives a long list of curses if the Jews violate the commandments. Dt29-12 says "You are all STANDING before God today" In other words despite the curses for disobediance you are still here before God(The implication being that no matter how angry God gets he will not destroy you) A further support for this theme can come from the General-particular-General form Dt28 GENERAL: Curses for disobediance Dt29-12 PARTICULAR: You are standing here before God Dt29-19 GENERAL: Curses for disobediance Thus the General-Particular-General form shows that Gods curses still allow us to "Stand before him"--in other words they are educative curses not punitive. *3 In other words (always) "Observe the Sabbaths" DESPITE a request to the contrary "By your parents" This can happen if eg your parents ask you to desecrate the Sabbath. You must observe the Sabbath even if your parents request to the contrary. And this can be generalized to all Torah laws(that they take precedence over your parents request) *4 Wear Tzitzith DESPITE the fact that they may have Shaatnez Wool and linen together (In the priestly garments made of Linen the Tzitzith were made of wool--thus the commandment of Tzitzith OVERRIDES the prohibtion of wearing wool and linen) *5 More specifically Rashi (Dt10-12a) states --------------------------------------------- Despite the 5 rebellions that the Jews did against God, nevertheless, God still loves the Jews. In fact Dt10-12 states that all the Jews need do to earn this love is to revere God --------------------------------------------- *6 Rashis point is that Jacob did not ask Esauv ---------------------------- Past me and leave me behind ---------------------------- Rather Jacob suggested contrast ------------------------------------------------ - I must go at a gentle pace - you go at a normal pace ------------------------------------------------ A logical consequence of this contrast is that Esauv would pass Jacob and leave him behind. *7 The full Biblical text shows two rounds of dialogs between Moses and Joseph The Biblical text states as follows ---------------------------------------------------- Gn42-09 1 JOE: You are Spies Gn42-10:11 1 BROHTERS: NO(Contrast)--We are simple people Gn42-12 2 JOE: NO(Contrast) you are spies Gn42-13 2 BROTHERS: We are 12 sons;we came for food ---------------------------------------------------- *8 From the contrast we infer that offer in the LAND means offer in YOUR LAND, where you are
|
||||
*10 On a superficial level Rashi seems to be connecting 2 verses. Avoid idolatry DESPITE your being a slave to a non jew (who encourages its violation). Do not think "I will worship idols now and when I am free I will go back to believing in God" On a profound level Rashi sees a unifying theme to this whole chapter. The chapter encourages observing the shimitah laws which encourage abstaining from agriculture once every 7 years so that people can devote themselves to God and study. If one violates these laws he is progressively punished. Here is the sequence of punishments {LIST} {Paragraphs in BEHAR} ------------------------------------------------------- VERSE LAW ------------ ------------------------------------------ Lv25-01:12 Observe the 7 and 50 year Land sabbaticals Lv25-13:24 If not you will have to sell your MOVABLES Lv25-25:28 If not you will have to sell your LAND Lv25-29:34 If not you will have to sell your HOUSE Lv25-35:38 If not you will have to LOAN Lv25-39:46 If not you will have to become a SLAVE Lv25-47:54 If not you'll become a NONJEWISH SLAVE Lv26-01:03 If not you'll be tempted to IDOLATRY --------------------------------------------------------- Thus Rashi does not merely teach juxtaposition of verses but he also teaches juxtaposition of ALL paragraphs in the chapter. |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 5 main goals is to explain meaning the same way a dictionary explains meaning. We call this the Rashi rule of WORD MEANINGS Rashi had 10 vehicles to explain meaning. Rashi frequently explained the new idiomatic meanings of phrases of words--that is, the collection of words has a new meaning that is distinct from the sum of meanings of the individual words. We call this the RASHI SUBRULE of NEW MEANINGS (We could also call this the Rashi subrule of IDIOMS) EXAMPLE Ex09-08b ---------------- The verse states ------------------------------------ God told Moses: Take FURNACE BREEZE ----------------------------------- Rashi comments ----------------------------------- FURNACE BREEZE refers to SOOT ----------------------------------- LIST854z below presents a list of Biblical multi-word idioms explained by Rashi

*1 Rashi points out 3 equally possible meanings - Youngest son (Son born while father was ELDERLY) - Wisest son (ELDER=WISDOM) - Son who resembles father (despite old age he still looks like son) *2 This is an example of a DOUBLE METONOMY Blood is ASSOCIATED with life and COVER is associated with denial. Hence COVER-BLOOD=conceal-murder *3 NOON is the midpoint between EVE and DAWN. Hence NOON is the BETWEEN THE EVES. *4 The context is the proposed marriage of 15 year old Rivkah to Isaac from another country. The offer had been made by the servant of Abraham to Rivkahs family The Biblical text states: Let us(her parents) ASK HER MOUTH This is the ONLY time in the Bible that this phrase occurs(The verb ASK occurs frequently). Apparently this phrase means - Lets DISCUSS or LETS GET AN OPINION*10 Such an interpretation is appropriate for a marriage decision *5 FIND-GRACE can equally mean I WISH YOU WELL or YOU WERE WISHED WELL. Rashi points out that GRACE by itself has this same connotation (Without the full phrase FIND GRACE). See LIST854g for further details *6 Tzade-Lamed-Ayin means SIDE (and hence can refer to the RIBS). Thus Ex30-04 speaks about the SIDE OF SIDES--that is the CORNER. *7 Actually the idiom consists of two parts - SQUEEZE the blood - use of the passive (Blood is SQUEEZED) Hence the idea that the slaughtered animal is pushed against the altar wall until the blood oozes forth. *8 In other words the WHITE PATCHES on the skin appear to be a DEEP WOUND (rather than a superficial skin discoloring) *11 *9 The Bible uses a variety of phrases to indicate lotteries such as - SHOOT A LOT Jo18-06 - THROW A LOT Jo18-08 - RAISE A LOT Jo18-11 - PLACE A LOT Lv16-08 - CAST A LOT Is34-17 *12
|
||||
*10 Hence the Rashi on Gn24-57b: The Biblical text states that Rivkah responded: I WILL GO. But Rashi, surprisingly states: I WILL GO WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT. Why did Rashi read such an emphasis into the simple question and answer ------------------------------------------ PARENTS: Rivkah, Will you go with this man RIVKAH: I will go. ------------------------------------------ The answer is that the Bible says ------------------------------------------ PARENTS: We will DISCUSS THE MATTER with her; get her opinion PARENTS: Rivkah, Will you go with this man RIVKAH: I will go. ------------------------------------------ Thus the context shows that Rivkah was not INTERESTED IN A DISCUSSION--she had already made up her mind *11 Rashi appears to say the following --------------------------------------- ALL WHITE appears deep; like the SUNLIT part appears deeper than the SHADE --------------------------------------- But the sunlit part does NOT appear deeper than shade. Hence we interpret this Rashi as follows -------------------------------------------- [The skin whiteness is not speckled but] ALL WHITE; [it appears] deep like a BURN appears deeper than just on SURFACE OF SKIN --------------------------------------------- By comparing the capped words in these two interpretations of Rashi we infer that we interpret - ChaMMaH as meaning BURN vs SUNLIT - SHADE as referring to non-burnt skin (vs shade) We also interpret -- [The skin is] ALL WHITE (not speckled); It appears... vs -- ALL WHITE APPEARS DEEP (This is a change in punctuation) *12 Superficially these phrases seem to be the same However Rashi on Lv16-08 states that PLACE A LOT means CASTING A LOT and PLACING the WINNING/LOSING TICKETS on the winners/losers. *13 Rashis literal langauge is ------------------------------------ Dont have BIG-SMALL stones with one contradicting the other ------------------------------------ I however have translated the Biblical text as meaning ----------------------------------------------- Dont have DOUBLE STANDARD STONES--big small; (and you use them depending on the customer) ----------------------------------------------- I believe these two translations are the same-- - Rashi emphasized the MECHANICS of the act - I emphasized the NEW MEANING aspect of the Biblical words You need both aspects to fully understand Rashi *14 An ASTONISHED or STARTLED person temporarily loses their capacity to respond to the environment (The STARTLE reflex). Hence an ASTONISHED HEART refers to an EMOTION (=heart) where one cant respond-- namely APATHY *15 The phrase ITS YOUR TURN is used in a context where a favor had been done to a person who is now asked to reciprocate *16 See LIST854i for several examples *17 See LIST854h for several examples *18 LIST854j below explores several verses with the idiom: YESTERDAY ...THREE DAYS AGO. These verses allow us to test the suggestion that this means LIKE FORMER HABITUAL BEHAVIOR Rashi on Ex21-29a states a requirement that an Ox is not considered a habitual Gorer unless the goring is done on 3 days. Rashi does not derive this from the verse. Rather Rashi on Ex21-29a interprets YESTERDAY...THREE DAYS AGO the same way he does on Ex05-07c as meaning FORMER HABITUAL BEHAVIOR. However Rashi supplements his interpretation of the phrase YESTERDAY...THREE DAYS AGO with the mention that Jewish law gives a numerical criteria that an Ox is not considered a Gorer unless the act has been done three times. This item in Jewish law is a numerical measurement handed down by tradition and should not be perceived as being derived from the Biblical text. *19 On Gn16-02c Rashi interprets VOICE to mean HOLY SPIRIT. On Ex04-08a Rashi suggests that God told Moses that he should tell the Jews that he (Moses) was being punished for receiving slander. In both these cases LISTEN TO VOICE seems to mean - listen to the nuances/consequences/ |

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain the meanings of words the same way a dictionary explains words.We call this the Rashi rule of WORD MEANINGS. Rashi has 10 vehicles to explain meanings. One method of explaining meaing is to use the GOOD EXAMPLE method. For example BREAD is a GOOD EXAMPLE of FOOD and hence BREAD can mean FOOD. Similarly HONEY can mean SWEET. In literature this is known as METONOMY or SYNECHDOCHE (naming a WHOLE by a PART). EXAMPLE Ex08-17b ---------------- The biblical text states ---------------------------- Behold I, God, will send again you, Pharoh, the MIXTURE ---------------------------- Rashi (paraphrased) comments ------------------------------- The word MIXTURE refers to a MIXTURE of beasts---lions, snakes, etc ------------------------------- Thus Rashi uses the GOOD EXAMPLE method here; a MIXTURE OF BEASTS is a good example of a MIXTURE LIST850a summarizes several Biblical words named using the GOOD EXAMPLE method.

*10 Rashi additionally cites a long Midrash Tanchuma on the reasons for the 10 commandments. The Midrash advocates that God declared WAR on Egypt. War is declared through - cutting of water/food supplies (bloody Nile) - Proclamations to scare the people (Frogs) - Physical attack (Lice) The MIXTURE was a second attack by LAND (since the first 3 were an attack by water). THe HAIL was a 3rd attack by AIR). We will develop this at a later date. Rav Hirsch follows this explanation in his commentary. |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis main goals is to explain grammar the same way modern Hebrew Grammar textbooks explain grammar. We call this the Rashi method of GRAMMAR. When Rashi discusses how a sentence can be made interrogative we speak about the Rashi submethod of the INTERROGATIVE EXAMPLE ------- - It is well known that a sentence indicates the interrogative if the letter hey is prefixed to a keyword (usually the first) in the sentence. - In a similar manner a sentence beginning with the keyword Caph-Yud, meaning PERHAPS, can also indicate the interrogative even if there is no hey EXAMPLE: Ex23-05b PERHAPS you will see the animals of your enemy overloaden and not help him? - A sentence following another sentence beginning with the phrase ISNT IT ENOUGH indicates a question EXAMMPLE: Gn30-15a ISNT IT ENOUGH you took my husband; You want to take my mandrakes also? - A sentence following a sentence beginning with the word BEHOLD can indicate the interrogative Ex08-22b BEHOLD if we offer offerings in front of Egypt, they wont kill us? LIST009b presents a list of QUESTION verses. LIST009c summarizes the keywords by which questions are asked. SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Rashi frequently makes powerful inferences from the alignment of ALMOST similar verses. The minor variations between these almost similar verses suggests nuances and differences or even meaning. We call this the Rashi rule of ALIGNMENT When Rashi infers MEANING from the ALIGNMENT of almost identical phrases we call this the Rashi SUBRULE of MEANING. EXAMPLE Ex08-22a ---------------- Ex08-22 states ---------------------------------------------------------------- It is DISGUST OF EGYPT to offer to our God If we offer DISGUST OF EGYPT they-ll kill us ---------------------------------------------------------------- Rashi infers that DISGUST OF EGYPT acquires the meaning of OFFERING Thus the verse should read ---------------------------------------------------------------- It is DISGUST OF EGYPT to offer to our God If we offer an OFFERING they-ll kill us ---------------------------------------------------------------- LIST343p summarizes this alignment

*10 Since the Hebrew word KI has 7 meanings we can inquire if there is some way of recognizing when KI means PERHAPS The answer seems to be that if the verse in question -- has a contradiction -- indicates a question then the word KI should be interested as PERHAPS Let us use this principle to examine the two verses above. Ex23-05 states ------------------------------------------------ KI you see the donkey of your enemy overburdened and you will abstain from helping him you should help him ------------------------------------------------ Notice the contradiction (DONT HELP vs HELP) this suggests that the sentence is rhetorical ------------------------------------------------------- WHEN you see an overburdened donkey YOU WONT HELP HIM? ------------------------------------------------------- This in turn justifies interpreting KI as PERHAPS ------------------------------------------------------- PERHAPS you see an overburdened donkey YOU WONT HELP HIM? ------------------------------------------------------- The next verse is Gn50-19a. In addition to haveing the Hebrew word KI it also has the hebrew letter HEY which indicates a question. These TWO factors---KI + HEY-- justifies translating the KI as PERHAPS |
