SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Rashi frequently makes powerful inferences from the alignment of ALMOST similar verses. The minor variations between these almost similar verses suggests nuances and differences or even meaning. We call this the Rashi rule of ALIGNMENT When Rashi infers MEANING from the ALIGNMENT of almost identical phrases we call this the Rashi SUBRULE of MEANING. EXAMPLE Ex09-32a ---------------- Ex09-31:32 states in discussing the effects of the hail ---------------------------------------------------------------- Flax/barley were hit because flax was bud barley was in ear Wheat/spelt were not hit because they were dark *1 *2 *3 ---------------------------------------------------------------- Rashi infers from the alignment that DARK GRAIN refers to NON-SPROUTED grain which explains why the hail did not hit them Radack further clarifies why the the Hebrew root Aleph-Pay-Lamed which means DARK, here means UNBUDDED. Radack explains that before a seed ripens it lies in the ground in the dark.

*1 Bible contrasts FLAX/BARLEY which were smitten by hail vs WHEAT/SPELT which was not smitten *2 Bible contrasts FLAX/BARLEY which were smitten by hail vs WHEAT/SPELT which was not smitten *3 From the contrast we infer that - DARK grain means UNBUDDED grain Radack further explains that unbudded grain lies in the DARK in the soil *10
*10 Rashi cites a dissenting opinion. According to Ex09-25 the hail ------------------------------------- Struck ALL herbage ------------------------------------- The emphasis suggests that even unbudded herbage was stricken. Therefore this dissenting view regards the non smiting of WHEAT and SPELT as something miraculous Here the root Aleph-Pay-Lamed is seen as coming from the root Pay-Lamed meaning MIRACLE. We do not further pursue this here except to say that we have a whole section devoted to roots beginning with aleph for example LIST910j. |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY: ----------------- One of Rashis 5 main goals is to explain meaning the same way the dictionary explains meaning. We call this the Rashi rule of WORD MEANINGS. Rashi could simply infer meaning from a list of verses which use this root. We call this the RASHI SUBRULE of WORD MEANINGS. Perhaps it should more appropriately be called the Rashi subrule of INFERENCE FROM VERSES. Note that this Rashi subrule corresponds to the Rabbi Ishmael exegetical rule of INFERRING BASED ON GENERALIZATION FROM SEVERAL TEXTS Example Ex09-08a ---------------- Rashi translates this verse ---------------------------------- take full HANDFULS of furnace soot ---------------------------------- Here Rashi translates Cheth-Pay-Nun as HANDFUL This root is very rare and occurs only 5 times in the entire Bible. LIST802p below summarizes these occurrences Example Ex09-17a ---------------- The Hebrew root Samech-Lamed-Lamed means PAVED. Hence this root can mean - a PAVING MACHINE - a PAVED ROAD The root can also have metaphoric meaning - a CLEAR and PAVED path in a subject - to TROD and WALK over people (Ex09-17a) Using the Radack we bring various verses illustrating these meanings. LIST802q below summarizes these verses. We cite the opinion of the Radack who translates the root differently Example Ex09-19a ---------------- The Hebrew root Ayin-Yud-Zayin means TO GOAT A HERD--that is to gather in a herd even against resistance. This meaning occurs very infrequently in only about half a dozen verses. But in all these verses the root clearly means to GATHER and FORTIFY oneself. LIST802r below summarizes these verses

*1 Same metaphors in English--e.g. WALK on somebody Perhaps use of this metaphor hints at the custom of live burial of slaves in pyramids if they didnt cooperate *2 Radack in one of those charming Rashi-Radack controversies suggests that Samech-Lamed-Lamed means LIFTING UP - LIFT UP stones from the road (Is62-10) - LIFT HER UP, exalt her (Pr04-08) - HIGH paths to the house of God (2C09-11) - you still EXALT yourself over my people (Ex09-17a)

VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE WITH Ayin-Yud-Zayin means TO GATHER FLOCK
Ex09-19a | Now send delegates--GOAT your flock *1
Jr04-06 | Raise a banner;GOAT yourselves;immediately; evil comes

Is10-31 | Madmaynah is exiled:The GOAT themselves into trenches
Is30-02 | They go to Egypt to GOAT themselves in Egyptians pens
*1 The metaphor GOAT is my innovation. Recall that the Hebrew word Ayin-Zayin means GOAT. Hence TO GOAT would mean to fight stubborn animals and pen them in. Thus I translate Ayin-Yud-Zayin as GATHER IN AGAINST RESISTANCE. You need not accept this suggestion of mine...but everyone agrees that Ayin-yud-zayin means TO GATHER I was simply trying to show a unity with the meaning GOAT. |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 5 main goals was the resolution of contradiction We call this the RASHI RULE OF CONTRADICTION. Rashi had a variety of methods to resolve contradiction. Very often the CONTRADICTION could be resolved by viewing the contradictory properties as applying to TWO CASES. We call this the Rashi SUBRULE of TWO CASES. EXAMPLE - Death of Egyptian livestock ------------------ Compare the following verses ------------------------------- Ex09-03 God will destroy livestock IN FIELD [plague #5] Ex09-09 God will send boils on livestock [plague #6] Ex09-19 God will kill by hail all livestock in field [plague7] Ex14-07 ...Egypt harnessed 600 chariots This appears contradictory---if the livestock were killed in plague #5 then how were there livestock in plagues #6, #7, #8. Rashi resolves this contradiction using the language in the verses - God killed livestock in FIELD (those in house survived) - Livestock in house got boils [Plague #6] - Livestock who left house for field died [Plague #7] - Livestock in house was used for chariots Here Rashi resolves contradiction using 2 cases: Livestock in FIELD vs HOUSE. This distinction is based on the verse Rashi wryly notes that - the people who believed in God and save livestock in house - then turned against God and sent livestock for chariots LIST510a presents other examples of resolving contradiction by 2 cases

Nu04-05 | Nu04-15 | PRIESTS pack; KEHATHITES carry*10

*1 See Lv26-03. Thus Lv26-03:06 explicitly states that when we observe, God will remove wild animals. Dt08-02 by contrast, explains that conquest of Israel will happen slowly FOR IF IT HAPPEEND QUICKLY WILD ANIMALS WOULD COME (because the Jews moral nature was not yet perfected and the protection of Lv26-03:06 does not yet apply) *11 *2 COARSE flour was used in cooking to wash the pot sides to clear it from rust producing agents and rotted food particles. *3 I should mention the Brilliant Malbim who points out to a repeated object denoting emphasis ----------------------------------------- She opened it and saw HIM -- a CHILD ----------------------------------------- Thus the child had a certain regality *12 *4 This distinction is explicitly mentioned in Ex01-10 Pharoh was concerned that the Jewish minority would align with an Egyptian enemy. Hence he killed the males. *13 *5 See Lv08-16:21 for Moses acting as a Priest. During this brief period Moses used the Temple Basin.
*10 Rashis point is strengthened by the abrupt change of subject ----------------------------------------------- Nu04-04 This is the job of the KEHATHITES Nu04-05 The PRIESTS come and cover the articles ... Nu04-15 ..and AFTERWARDS the KEHATHITES come ----------------------------------------------- If one just reads Nu04-04 and Nu04-05 by themselves it appears as if the PRIESTS mentioned in Nu04-05 refer back to the KEHATHITES mentioned in Nu04-04 *11 Interesting Rashi cites a verse in Job rather than the explicit Lv26-03:06. Rashi also does not explicitly mention that he is using the rule of resolving 2 contradictory cases. But that IS what Rashi does. It seems rather straightforward to introduce Lv26-03:06. Rashi probably expected the reader to know this verse since it comes in the great REBUKE---Rashi complements this verses with complementary verses in Job *12 Rashis actual language is that ------------------------------------ She saw Gods presence with him ------------------------------------ I have tempered this a bit as follows --------------------------- She saw the childs regality --------------------------- I think Rashis point is to explain why she risked her life to save a Jewish child This child was different--he had a certain regality...why not raise him as an Egyptian He would fit in well with the Royal house *13 Rashi actually says ------------------------------------------ Pharohs astrologers said that the Jews have just had a male savior born. Pharoh therefore decreed the death of the male Jews ------------------------------------------ However the REAL driving force of Rashi is the contradictory verses and the resolution from an explicit verse. Rashi avails himself of OTHER VERSES which show that Pharoh always consulted with his astrologers (eg Ex08-12:15). Thus Rashi is simply dressing up the contradiction. The real point of Rashi is the contradiction and the distinction between the people(hated all) and the King. (concerned about security) |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 5 main goals is to give the meaning of words the same way the dictionary gives meaning. We call this the Rashi RULE of WORD MEANINGS. Rashi had a variety of vehicles to present meaning. A common technique of explaining meaning is the skillful use of IDIOMATIC USAGE--that is collections of words which mean more than the individual words. We call this the RASHI SUBRULE CLASS of NEW MEANINGS. In todays posting we explore how METONOMY can give rise to NEW MEANINGS. METONOMY refers to the naming of an item by a related item. For example the word AMERICA which refers to the COUNTRY can, by METONOMY refer to the people--AMERICANS. Both idiomatic expressions--which are permanant new meanings in a language--as well as metonomies--which refer to possibly one-time uses of metonomy--are governed by the Rashi subrule of NEW MEANINGS. EXAMPLE Ex09-18a ---------------- Both in English and Hebrew the phrase - LIKE THIS TIME TOMORROW means at THIS HOUR on the next day LIST854y gives other examples of 2-3 word Biblical idioms
