SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 5 main goals was the resolution of contradiction We call this the RASHI RULE OF CONTRADICTION. Rashi had a variety of methods to resolve contradiction. Very often the CONTRADICTION could be resolved by viewing the contradictory properties as applying to TWO CASES. We call this the Rashi SUBRULE of TWO CASES. EXAMPLE - Gn36-02c ------------------ Gn36-02 states ------------------------------- Esauv married Ahalivamah -the Daughter of ANAH -the Daughter of Zivon ------------------------------ Note that Gn36-24 clearly states that ------------------------------------ The SONS of Zivon were AYAH and ANAH ------------------------------------ Rashi picks up on the contradiction ----------------------------------- Gn36-02 states that Ahalivamah was the daughter of both - her father and - her grandfather We resolve this contradiction by noting 2 cases of DAUGHTERHOOD-- Ahalivamah was ILLEGITIMATE - her grandfather had an affair - with her fathers wife Hence she was the daughter of both - her father - her grandfather ----------------------------------- LIST510a below presents other verse pairs where contradiction is resolved thru two cases

*1 See Lv26-03. Thus Lv26-03:06 explicitly states that when we observe, God will remove wild animals. Dt08-02 by contrast, explains that conquest of Israel will happen slowly FOR IF IT HAPPEEND QUICKLY WILD ANIMALS WOULD COME (because the Jews moral nature was not yet perfected and the protection of Lv26-03:06 does not yet apply) *11 *2 COARSE flour was used in cooking to wash the pot sides to clear it from rust producing agents and rotted food particles. *3 I should mention the Brilliant Malbim who points out to a repeated object denoting emphasis ----------------------------------------- She opened it and saw HIM -- a CHILD ----------------------------------------- Thus the child had a certain regality *12 *4 This distinction is explicitly mentioned in Ex01-10 Pharoh was concerned that the Jewish minority would align with an Egyptian enemy. Hence he killed the males. *13 *5 See Lv08-16:21 for Moses acting as a Priest. During this brief period Moses used the Temple Basin.
|
|||
*10 Rashis point is strengthened by the abrupt change of subject ----------------------------------------------- Nu04-04 This is the job of the KEHATHITES Nu04-05 The PRIESTS come and cover the articles ... Nu04-15 ..and AFTERWARDS the KEHATHITES come ----------------------------------------------- If one just reads Nu04-04 and Nu04-05 by themselves it appears as if the PRIESTS mentioned in Nu04-05 refer back to the KEHATHITES mentioned in Nu04-04 *11 Interesting Rashi cites a verse in Job rather than the explicit Lv26-03:06. Rashi also does not explicitly mention that he is using the rule of resolving 2 contradictory cases. But that IS what Rashi does. It seems rather straightforward to introduce Lv26-03:06. Rashi probably expected the reader to know this verse since it comes in the great REBUKE---Rashi complements this verses with complementary verses in Job *12 Rashis actual language is that ------------------------------------ She saw Gods presence with him ------------------------------------ I have tempered this a bit as follows --------------------------- She saw the childs regality --------------------------- I think Rashis point is to explain why she risked her life to save a Jewish child This child was different--he had a certain regality...why not raise him as an Egyptian He would fit in well with the Royal house *13 Rashi actually says ------------------------------------------ Pharohs astrologers said that the Jews have just had a male savior born. Pharoh therefore decreed the death of the male Jews ------------------------------------------ However the REAL driving force of Rashi is the contradictory verses and the resolution from an explicit verse. Rashi avails himself of OTHER VERSES which show that Pharoh always consulted with his astrologers (eg Ex08-12:15). Thus Rashi is simply dressing up the contradiction. The real point of Rashi is the contradiction and the distinction between the people(hated all) and the King. (concerned about security) |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 5 main goals is to give the meaning of words the same way the dictionary gives meaning. We call this the Rashi method of WORD MEANING. Rashi had a variety of vehicles to present meaning. Rashi frequently explained MULTI-WORD IDIOMS. An IDIOM occurs when 1 or more words form a NEW MEANING not directly equal to the meaning of the constituent words of the IDIOM. We call this the SUBRULE of NEW MEANINGS since the words acquire new meanings. In acquiring NEW MEANINGS Rashi frequently used a universal principle of all languages---METONOMY. METONOMY refers to the capacity to name an item by a related item (such as naming a PEOPLE, Americans, by the LAND they live in, America) EXAMPLE Gn33-13d ---------------- The verse speaks about ----------------------------------------- if the herd is KNOCKED they will die ----------------------------------------- Rashi explains -------------------- KNOCKED means RUSHED -------------------- Rashi here uses METONOMY: Since when you rush someone you frequently KNOCK them and urge them on Here the word KNOCK metonomically means to URGE.

*1 Many examples in this list come from previous list in the metonomy series (LIST871a, LIST871b, LIST871c) *2 See LIST871e for 6 Rashis mentioning this HAND=DOMAIN theme *3 See LIST871f for verses where NSA means GIFT *4 Rashi citing the Midrash Rabbah states ------------------------------------- Your violence is something you VIOLATED from Esauv (You are killing like Esauv) ------------------------------------- But I see no reason to see this Midrash as the PRIMARY simple meaning of the verse. The PRIMARY meaning of the verse is that Shimon and Levi were criminals The Midrash is simply adding a pun to this observation. *5 See LIST871g for some examples *6 This is a common metonomy that occurs in English (eg America-Americans etc). Rashi is cute here: He EXPLAINS the metonomy ---------------------------------------------- When the soldiers die at sea their loved ones back in Egypt also suffer and in effect are smitten by God ---------------------------------------------- Rashi does not contradict the metonomy--he simply shows why it is convenient to identify the LAND and PEOPLE. *7 The night was traditionally divided into three times of Guard duty. The GUARD DUTY near dawn was called the MORNING WATCH (Cf Ju07-19 for confirmation that there was a BEGINNING WATCH, MIDDLE WATCH and DAWN WATCH) *8 The phrases SEEK GOD, SEEK IN GOD, occur in several verses and denote SEEKING ADVICE OF GOD. Compare for example (1S09-09, 1K22-08 or even 2K01-03 (Seeking advice of idolatrous gods). For alternate meanings see note *10. *9 The exact verse text is -------------------------------------------------- You will have to remove the old grain for the new -------------------------------------------------- This means --------------------- You will have plenty --------------------- In other words removal of the OLD for the NEW is simply something RELATED to PLENTY. The main theme is plenty. Similarly the Biblical text ------------------------------------------------------ The threshing season will bump into the harvest season ------------------------------------------------------ means -------------------- you will have plenty -------------------- Again the fact that we are STILL threshing when the harvest comes is something RELATED to having plenty. The main point is that there is PLENTY.
|
|||
*10 On Gn25-22e there is a delightful Ramban Rashi controversy Ramban points out that SEEK GOD can mean PRAYER. Rashi holds it means PROPHETIC ADVICE. I brought about a dozen verses which clearly show that - SEEK GOD can and does refer to PRAYER - SEEK GOD can and does refer to PROPHETIC ADVICE - SEEK GOD can and does refer to BOTH Prayer/Prophecy Hence I regard Ramban not as disagreeing with Rashi but rather as complementing him. For further details see http://www.Rashiyomi.com/gn25-22d.htm *11 Clearly the Hebrew YeeChad comes from the root CHAD which means SHARP. Rashi brings two opinions - It means HE SHARPED (Mirthed at a SHARP WORD) - It means HE TWINGED (Upset at PAINFUL news) But Radack brings STRONG support that CHAD means mirth. Indeed, in other verses, CHAD does mean MIRTH (As in eg Neh08-10 or P021-07). This controversy between Rashi and Radack can be resolved Grammatically. The grammatical form of VaYeeChad (Chirik, Patach) could come from either - INTENSE MODE of 1-2-Hey roots(Cheth-Daleth-Hey) or - PASSIVE MODE of 1-2-2 roots(Cheth-Daleth-Daleth) In the intense mode CHAD means MIRTH(Radack) But in the PASSIVE MODE it would correspond to RECEIVING (PASSIVE!) a SHARP twinge at hearing bad news. Hence the controversy is on the root and mode of the word. This explanation makes both viewpoints respectable since Rashi would concede that CHEDVAH which definitely comes from Cheth-Daleth-Hey means MIRTH; Rashi could still maintain that Yee-Chad means TWINGED since it comes from a different root Rashi also points out that the translation TWINGED would show that despite Jethros happiness he still felt sorry for the Egyptians thus showing the conflict between his past(non-jew) and future (friend of Jews) *12 AFTERNOON-LIGHT-OIL is an example of DOUBLE METONOMY See LIST871c for other examples. |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis five main goals is to illuminate verse meaning using cross references to OTHER VERSES. We call this the OTHER VERSE rule. When the OTHER CROSS REFERENCED verse is used to illuminate the original verse with FURTHER DETAILS we speak about the Rashi Subrule of FURTHER DETAILS. EXAMPLE Gn35-22b ---------------- Gn35-22b, which states that ---------------------------------------------- Reuven slept with Bilhah his fathers concubine ---------------------------------------------- is illumined by Gn49-04 which states that Jacob criticized Reuven for ----------------------------------- playing with your fathers beds ----------------------------------- Hence Rashi states ----------------------------------- Reuven did not actually sleep with Bilhah. Rather his fathers favorite bedware was kept on Bilhah's bed since Bilhah, Rachels concubine, reminded him of her after Rachels death. Reuven felt that his father should be living with Leah, since Leah was a bonafide wife. Reuven felt it insulting that Jacob preferred a concubine vs a real wife. Hence he switched the bedware from Bilhahs bed to Leahs bed in order to talk his father out of his behavior -------------------------------------- LIST210y below gives many other verse pairs where one verse illumines another verse.

*1 We ASKED you to go but didnt HARASS you till you went *2 The point being that the city wasnt named for the symbolic use of SEVEN (SHIVAH) lambs to seal the treaty(BUt rather the SEVEN lambs symbolically affirm the OATH=SHEVA for which the city was named) *3 Gn27-27b refers to a BLESSED FRAGRANT FIELD while Lv23-40 refers to a TREE OF SPLENDOR.*10 *4 Reuven did not actually sleep with Bilhah. Hence he switched the bedware from Bilhahs bed to Leahs bed in order to talk his father out of his behavior For our translation of Gn49-04 see footnote *12 --------------------- LONGER FOOTNOTES --------------------- *10 Rashi uses the languages ------------------------------- this refers to an APPLE orchard ------------------------------- But apple orchards are not known for their fragrance. Rather the reference is probably to an -------------- ETHROG orchard -------------- which has a characteristic hypnotic fragrance. The Hebrew word for ETHROG is GOLDEN APPLE.(The beauty of fragrance of an ETHROG ORCHARD was mentioned by the Rav, Rabbi Soloveitchick). *11 Rashi citing the Talmud states ------------------------------------------------------- Jacob came whole - from LIMP - from Monetary gifts to Esauv(Jacob had all his money) - with all his learning ------------------------------------------------------- But there 3 items all emanate from Gn32-32 where we are told that Jacob fought with an angel and won. Since he won - he did not lose money - he did not lose his Jewishness *12 Gn49-04 is translated by us as ------------------------------------- you played with your fathers beds ------------------------------------- Note the PLURAL BEDS vs BED...this shows that two BEDS (not the one bed of BILHAH) was involved We translate the Hebrew root &LH (to go up) as &LL (To play with). - THere are no other cases where &LH means &LL - but interchanges of 1-2-Hey and 1-2-2 roots does frequently occur in the Bible - Finally the verse wouldnt make sense if &LH was translated as GO UP since the phrase ------------------------- Go Up on your fathers bed ------------------------- couldnt refer to intimacy since intimacy is always referred to as GOING DOWN instead of GOING UP. |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis main methods is the skillful use of ALIGNMENT to illustrate nuances. The minor differences between TWO ALIGNED verses powerfully suggests explicit concepts. We call this the ALIGNMENT method. When the ALIGNMENT method is used to infer NUANCES we speak about the NUANCE SUBRULE of the ALIGNMENT method. EXAMPPLE Gn34-16b ----------------- Rashi here aligns the following verses ----------------------------------------------------------------- VERSE FROM TO PHRASE1 PHRASE2 -------- ----- ----- ---------------------- --------------------- Gn34-16b Jews Schem We-ll GIVE our girls We-ll TAKE your girls Gn34-21 Schem Jews We-ll TAKE their girls We-ll GIVE our girls Differs *1 *1 *2 *2 ----------------------------------------------------------------- Rashi states ---------------------------------------------- Note how each side (Jews, Schem) states that - we will GIVE OUR women but - we will TAKE YOUR women Thus each side emphasizes that their women are special and will only be given if they consent. ---------------------------------------------- LIST308g summarizes this ALIGNMENT. One can find many similar alignments in the LIST307 and LIST308 series. EXAMPLE Gn36-02:03 vs Gn26-34 Gn28-09 ------------------------------------- Gn36-02:03 and Gn26 both list 3 wives for Esauv. However the wives have different names. Rashi interprets the meaning of their names based on their roots. This gives philosophical insights. The three alignments are as follows ---------------------------------------------------------------- VERSE Wife Name Daughter Of Nationality ------ ------- --------------- -------- --------- Gn36-02a Adah Daughter of Aylon the Hitite Gn26-34 Basmath Daughter of Aylon the Hitite RASHI ---------------------------------------- Clearly we are talking about the same wife. BASMATH means PERFUME. So she did some perfume related activity Either she - would perfume herself alot or - she would offer perfume offerings to idolatry ------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------------- VERSE Wife Name Daughter Of Nationality ------ ------- --------------- -------- --------- Gn36-03a Basmath Daughter of Ishmael Gn28-09 Machlath Daughter of Ishmael Rashi --------------------------------------------------- Clearly we are talking about the same wife. MACHLATH means ATONE. Gn26-33 states that ESAUV learned that ISAAC his father did not like his other wives. Perhaps then MACHLATH refers to Esauvs prayers that his new marriage should atone his relationship with his father --------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------- VERSE Wife Name Daughter Of Nationality ------ ------- --------------- -------- --------- Gn36-02b Ahalivamah Illegitimate Daughter of Anah the Hitite Gn26-34 Yehudith Daughter of Beyri The Hitite Rashi --------------------------------------------------- The identity of the two wives is not as clear her but we can use analogy with the other two wives to prove it. Yehudith means JEWISH. Perhaps then Esauv called his wife JEWISH to fool his father into thinking that she was interested in his religion ---------------------------------------------------- LIST308h below summarizes these alignments. The LIST307 and LIST308 series gives many more examples of ALIGNMENT

*1 BASMATH means PERFUME. This suggests that she was involved in perfuming. Perhaps - she always perfumed herself - she offered perfume sacrifices to idolatry (Rashi) *2 These phrases are the same showing that the two names refer to the same person *4 MACHLATH means ATONEMENT. But Gn26-33 states ------------------------------------------------ Esauv saw that his father did not like his other wives so he married an Arab wife ------------------------------------------------ Perhaps then MACHLATH means that Esauv supplicated for ATONEMENT for his former wives. (Rashi actually suggests that he actually received atonement) *3 This identity of Ahalivamah and Yehudith is less clear than the identity of the other two wives. Perhaps we can justify the assertion by appeal to analogy. The word YEHUDITH means JEWISH. Perhaps then Esauv called his wife JEWISH to fool his father into thinking that she was interested in his religion.

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 5 main goals is the explanation of meaning similar to the way a dictionary explains meaning. We call this the Rashi rule of WORD MEANING. Rashi had 10 major vehicles by which to explain meaning. A major subrule of MEANING is when Rashi paints a UNIFYING meaning to disparate meanings of one root. We call this the method of UNIFYING MEANINGS. Todays example is a peach of commentary showing the great intricacy in explaining meaning EXAMPLE Gn33-11a ---------------- The Biblical text states ------------------------------------- Esauv, Please take from me, Jacob, the BLESSING (BRK) brought to you ------------------------------------- Rashi explains that ------------------------------------ The Hebrew root BRK besides meaning BLESSING can also mean GIFT. ------------------------------------ Rashi says no more although he does give supportive verses. But we can fully understand Rashi by using the resources provided by other Jewish commentators. First we use the RADACK who in his book ROOTS gives all meanings of the root BRK. Second we borrow from the writings of Rabbi Hirsch who suggests that the meaning KNEE is UNIFYING Let us examine BRK MEANS - KNEE - TO KNEE THE CAMELS (= to make them rest on knees) - POND - because you get on your knees to sip from a pond - BLESS - Rav Hirsch argues that just as you EYE a scene, or SMELL a situation or HAND an object so too you can KNEEIZE A PERSON IN HIS PATH OF LIFE--here KNEEIZE simply means to LEND THE PERSON A KNEE...the KNEES fucntion is to facilitate movement so that KNEEIZING A PERSON means BLESSING HIM--facilitating travel on his path in life From the meaning of BLESS we get 3 other meanings - CURSE The PIEL grammatical mode can NEGATE a meaning--hence curse - GREET FREQUENTLY you greet with a BLESSING (Hope all is well with you) - GIFT You frequently BLESS by giving a GIFT and BLESSING for more Here we have used the principle of METONOMY which states that an item (GREET GIFT) can be named by something RELATED TO IT.

Since the - LEG moves - KNEE facilitates movement therefore, TO KNEE means to FACILITATE the persons movement on his path in life--that is, to BLESS him. *2 The PIEL MODE often NEGATES a meaning. So the PIEL of BLESS is CURSE *3 You FREQUENTLY greet by giving a blessing (eg HOW ARE YOU...MAY YOU BE WELL or HAPPY THANKSGIVING). Here we use the METONOMY principle of meaning which states that an item can be named by something FREQUENTLY RELATED to it. *4 You FREQUENTLY bring GIFTS when you bless someone (E.g. at a wedding) Here we use the METONOMY principle which states that an item can be named by something FREQUENTLY RELATED to it. Rashi and Radack both list several verses where BRK means GIFT: - Gn33-11 Take the Gift I give you - 2K05-15 Take the gift from your servance - Is66-03 Bringing GIFT offerings from theft(Radack) |
