SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 5 main goals was the resolution of contradiction
We call this the RASHI RULE OF CONTRADICTION.

Rashi had a variety of methods to resolve contradiction. Very
often the CONTRADICTION could be resolved by viewing the
contradictory properties as applying to TWO CASES. We call
this the Rashi SUBRULE of TWO CASES.

EXAMPLE - Gn36-02c
------------------
Gn36-02 states
-------------------------------
Esauv married Ahalivamah
-the Daughter of ANAH
-the Daughter of Zivon
------------------------------

Note that Gn36-24 clearly states that
------------------------------------
The SONS of Zivon were AYAH and ANAH
------------------------------------

Rashi picks up on the contradiction
-----------------------------------
Gn36-02 states that Ahalivamah
was the daughter of both
- her father and
- her grandfather
We resolve this contradiction by
noting 2 cases of DAUGHTERHOOD--
Ahalivamah was ILLEGITIMATE
- her grandfather had an affair
- with her fathers wife
Hence she was the daughter of both
- her father
- her grandfather
-----------------------------------

LIST510a below presents other verse
pairs where contradiction is resolved
thru two cases

COMMENTS
*1 See Lv26-03. Thus Lv26-03:06 explicitly states that
when we observe, God will remove wild animals. Dt08-02
by contrast, explains that conquest of Israel will
happen slowly FOR IF IT HAPPEEND QUICKLY WILD ANIMALS
WOULD COME (because the Jews moral nature was not
yet perfected and the protection of Lv26-03:06
does not yet apply) *11

*2 COARSE flour was used in cooking to wash the pot
sides to clear it from rust producing agents and
rotted food particles.

*3 I should mention the Brilliant Malbim who points
out to a repeated object denoting emphasis
-----------------------------------------
She opened it and saw HIM -- a CHILD
-----------------------------------------
Thus the child had a certain regality *12

*4 This distinction is explicitly mentioned in Ex01-10
Pharoh was concerned that the Jewish minority would
align with an Egyptian enemy. Hence he killed the
males. *13

*5 See Lv08-16:21 for Moses acting as a Priest. During
this brief period Moses used the Temple Basin.

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Rashis point is strengthened by the abrupt change
of subject
-----------------------------------------------
Nu04-04 This is the job of the KEHATHITES
Nu04-05 The PRIESTS come and cover the articles
...
Nu04-15 ..and AFTERWARDS the KEHATHITES come
-----------------------------------------------

If one just reads Nu04-04 and Nu04-05 by themselves
it appears as if the PRIESTS mentioned in Nu04-05
refer back to the KEHATHITES mentioned in Nu04-04

*11 Interesting Rashi cites a verse in Job rather
than the explicit Lv26-03:06. Rashi also does
not explicitly mention that he is using the rule
of resolving 2 contradictory cases.
But that IS what Rashi does. It seems rather
straightforward to introduce Lv26-03:06. Rashi
probably expected the reader to know this verse
since it comes in the great REBUKE---Rashi complements
this verses with complementary verses in Job

*12 Rashis actual language is that
------------------------------------
She saw Gods presence with him
------------------------------------

I have tempered this a bit as follows
---------------------------
She saw the childs regality
---------------------------

I think Rashis point is to explain why
she risked her life to save a Jewish child
This child was different--he had a certain
regality...why not raise him as an Egyptian
He would fit in well with the Royal house

*13 Rashi actually says
------------------------------------------
Pharohs astrologers said that the Jews
have just had a male savior born.
Pharoh therefore decreed the death of
the male Jews
------------------------------------------

However the REAL driving force of Rashi
is the contradictory verses and the
resolution from an explicit verse.

Rashi avails himself of OTHER VERSES
which show that Pharoh always consulted
with his astrologers (eg Ex08-12:15).

Thus Rashi is simply dressing up the
contradiction. The real point of Rashi
is the contradiction and the distinction
between the people(hated all) and the King.

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 5 main goals is to give the meaning of
words the same way the dictionary gives meaning. We
call this the Rashi method of WORD MEANING.

Rashi had a variety of vehicles to present meaning.
Rashi frequently explained MULTI-WORD IDIOMS. An IDIOM
occurs when 1 or more words form a NEW MEANING not
directly equal to the meaning of the constituent words
of the IDIOM. We call this the SUBRULE of NEW MEANINGS
since the words acquire new meanings.

In acquiring NEW MEANINGS Rashi frequently used a
universal principle of all languages---METONOMY.
METONOMY refers to the capacity to name an item
by a related item (such as naming a PEOPLE, Americans,
by the LAND they live in, America)

EXAMPLE Gn33-13d
----------------
The verse speaks about
-----------------------------------------
if the herd is KNOCKED they will die
-----------------------------------------

Rashi explains
--------------------
KNOCKED means RUSHED
--------------------

Rashi here uses METONOMY: Since when you rush
someone you frequently KNOCK them and urge them on
Here the word KNOCK metonomically means to URGE.

*1 Many examples in this list come from previous
list in the metonomy series (LIST871a,
LIST871b, LIST871c)

*2 See LIST871e for 6 Rashis mentioning this HAND=DOMAIN
theme

*3 See LIST871f for verses where NSA means GIFT

*4 Rashi citing the Midrash Rabbah states
-------------------------------------
Your violence is something you VIOLATED
from Esauv (You are killing like Esauv)
-------------------------------------

But I see no reason to see this Midrash
as the PRIMARY simple meaning of the
verse. The PRIMARY meaning of the verse
is that Shimon and Levi were criminals
The Midrash is simply adding a pun to this
observation.

*5 See LIST871g for some examples

*6 This is a common metonomy that occurs in English
(eg America-Americans etc).

Rashi is cute here: He EXPLAINS the metonomy
----------------------------------------------
When the soldiers die at sea their loved ones
back in Egypt also suffer and in effect are
smitten by God
----------------------------------------------
Rashi does not contradict the metonomy--he
simply shows why it is convenient to identify
the LAND and PEOPLE.

*7 The night was traditionally divided into three
times of Guard duty. The GUARD DUTY near dawn
was called the MORNING WATCH (Cf Ju07-19 for
confirmation that there was a BEGINNING WATCH, MIDDLE
WATCH and DAWN WATCH)

*8 The phrases SEEK GOD, SEEK IN GOD, occur in several
verses and denote SEEKING ADVICE OF GOD. Compare for
example (1S09-09, 1K22-08 or even 2K01-03 (Seeking
advice of idolatrous gods). For alternate meanings
see note *10.

*9 The exact verse text is
--------------------------------------------------
You will have to remove the old grain for the new
--------------------------------------------------
This means
---------------------
You will have plenty
---------------------

In other words removal of the OLD for the NEW
is simply something RELATED to PLENTY. The main
theme is plenty.

Similarly the Biblical text
------------------------------------------------------
The threshing season will bump into the harvest season
------------------------------------------------------
means
--------------------
you will have plenty
--------------------
Again the fact that we are STILL threshing when the
harvest comes is something RELATED to having plenty.
The main point is that there is PLENTY.

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 On Gn25-22e there is a delightful Ramban Rashi controversy
Ramban points out that SEEK GOD can mean PRAYER. Rashi
holds it means PROPHETIC ADVICE. I brought about a dozen
verses which clearly show that
- SEEK GOD can and does refer to PRAYER
- SEEK GOD can and does refer to PROPHETIC ADVICE
- SEEK GOD can and does refer to BOTH Prayer/Prophecy
Hence I regard Ramban not as disagreeing with Rashi but
rather as complementing him. For further details see
http://www.Rashiyomi.com/gn25-22d.htm

*11 Clearly the Hebrew YeeChad comes from the root CHAD
which means SHARP. Rashi brings two opinions
- It means HE SHARPED (Mirthed at a SHARP WORD)
- It means HE TWINGED (Upset at PAINFUL news)

But Radack brings STRONG support that CHAD means
mirth. Indeed, in other verses, CHAD does mean
MIRTH (As in eg Neh08-10 or P021-07).

This controversy between Rashi and Radack
can be resolved Grammatically. The grammatical
form of VaYeeChad (Chirik, Patach) could come from
either
- INTENSE MODE of 1-2-Hey roots(Cheth-Daleth-Hey) or
- PASSIVE MODE of 1-2-2 roots(Cheth-Daleth-Daleth)

In the intense mode CHAD means MIRTH(Radack)

But in the PASSIVE MODE it would correspond to
RECEIVING (PASSIVE!) a SHARP twinge at hearing
bad news.

Hence the controversy is on the root and mode
of the word.

This explanation makes both viewpoints respectable
since Rashi would concede that CHEDVAH which
definitely comes from Cheth-Daleth-Hey means
MIRTH; Rashi could still maintain that Yee-Chad
means TWINGED since it comes from a different root

Rashi also points out that the translation
TWINGED would show that despite Jethros
happiness he still felt sorry for the Egyptians
thus showing the conflict between his past(non-jew)
and future (friend of Jews)

*12 AFTERNOON-LIGHT-OIL is an example of DOUBLE METONOMY
See LIST871c for other examples.

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis five main goals is to illuminate verse meaning
using cross references to OTHER VERSES. We call this the
OTHER VERSE rule.

When the OTHER CROSS REFERENCED verse is used to illuminate
the original verse with FURTHER DETAILS we speak about the
Rashi Subrule of FURTHER DETAILS.

EXAMPLE Gn35-22b
----------------
Gn35-22b, which states that
----------------------------------------------
Reuven slept with Bilhah his fathers concubine
----------------------------------------------

is illumined by Gn49-04 which states that
Jacob criticized Reuven for
-----------------------------------
playing with your fathers beds
-----------------------------------

Hence Rashi states
-----------------------------------
Reuven did not actually sleep with
Bilhah. Rather his fathers favorite
bedware was kept on Bilhah's bed since
Bilhah, Rachels concubine, reminded him
of her after Rachels death. Reuven felt
that his father should be living with
Leah, since Leah was a bonafide wife.
Reuven felt it insulting that Jacob
preferred a concubine vs a real wife.
Hence he switched the bedware from
Bilhahs bed to Leahs bed in order
to talk his father out of his behavior

the SEVEN lambs symbolically affirm the OATH=SHEVA for
which the city was named)

*3 Gn27-27b refers to a BLESSED FRAGRANT FIELD while Lv23-40
refers to a TREE OF SPLENDOR.*10

*4
Reuven did not actually sleep with

Bilhah, Rachels concubine, reminded him

For our translation of Gn49-04 see footnote *12

--------------------- LONGER FOOTNOTES ---------------------

*10 Rashi uses the languages
-------------------------------
this refers to an APPLE orchard
-------------------------------

But apple orchards are not known for their fragrance.
Rather the reference is probably to an
--------------
ETHROG orchard
--------------
which has a characteristic hypnotic fragrance. The
Hebrew word for ETHROG is GOLDEN APPLE.(The beauty
of fragrance of an ETHROG ORCHARD was mentioned by
the Rav, Rabbi Soloveitchick).

*11 Rashi citing the Talmud states
-------------------------------------------------------
Jacob came whole
- from LIMP
- from Monetary gifts to Esauv(Jacob had all his money)
- with all his learning
-------------------------------------------------------

But there 3 items all emanate from Gn32-32 where we
are told that Jacob fought with an angel and won.

Since he won
- he did not lose money
- he did not lose his Jewishness

*12 Gn49-04 is translated by us as
-------------------------------------
you played with your fathers beds
-------------------------------------

Note the PLURAL BEDS vs BED...this shows that
two BEDS (not the one bed of BILHAH) was involved

We translate the Hebrew root &LH (to go up) as
&LL (To play with).

- THere are no other cases where &LH means &LL
- but interchanges of 1-2-Hey and 1-2-2 roots
does frequently occur in the Bible
- Finally the verse wouldnt make sense if &LH
was translated as GO UP since the phrase
-------------------------
Go Up on your fathers bed
-------------------------
couldnt refer to intimacy since intimacy
is always referred to as GOING DOWN instead
of GOING UP.

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis main methods is the skillful use of
ALIGNMENT to illustrate nuances. The minor differences
between TWO ALIGNED verses powerfully suggests explicit
concepts. We call this the ALIGNMENT method.

When the ALIGNMENT method is used to infer NUANCES we
speak about the NUANCE SUBRULE of the ALIGNMENT method.

EXAMPPLE Gn34-16b
-----------------
Rashi here aligns the following verses
-----------------------------------------------------------------
VERSE FROM TO PHRASE1 PHRASE2
-------- ----- ----- ---------------------- ---------------------
Gn34-16b Jews Schem We-ll GIVE our girls We-ll TAKE your girls
Gn34-21 Schem Jews We-ll TAKE their girls We-ll GIVE our girls
Differs *1 *1 *2 *2
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Rashi states
----------------------------------------------
Note how each side (Jews, Schem) states that
- we will GIVE OUR women but
- we will TAKE YOUR women
Thus each side emphasizes that their women
are special and will only be given if they
consent.
----------------------------------------------

LIST308g summarizes this ALIGNMENT. One can find many
similar alignments in the LIST307 and LIST308 series.

EXAMPLE Gn36-02:03 vs Gn26-34 Gn28-09
-------------------------------------
Gn36-02:03 and Gn26 both list 3 wives for Esauv. However
the wives have different names. Rashi interprets the
meaning of their names based on their roots. This gives
philosophical insights.

The three alignments are as follows

----------------------------------------------------------------
VERSE Wife Name Daughter Of Nationality
------ ------- --------------- -------- ---------
Gn36-02a Adah Daughter of Aylon the Hitite
Gn26-34 Basmath Daughter of Aylon the Hitite

RASHI
----------------------------------------
Clearly we are talking about the same wife.
BASMATH means PERFUME. So she did some perfume related activity
Either she
- would perfume herself alot or
- she would offer perfume offerings to idolatry
------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------
VERSE Wife Name Daughter Of Nationality
------ ------- --------------- -------- ---------
Gn36-03a Basmath Daughter of Ishmael
Gn28-09 Machlath Daughter of Ishmael

Rashi
---------------------------------------------------
Clearly we are talking about the same wife.
MACHLATH means ATONE. Gn26-33 states that ESAUV
learned that ISAAC his father did not like his
other wives. Perhaps then MACHLATH refers to Esauvs
prayers that his new marriage should atone his
relationship with his father
---------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------
VERSE Wife Name Daughter Of Nationality
------ ------- --------------- -------- ---------
Gn36-02b Ahalivamah Illegitimate Daughter of Anah the Hitite
Gn26-34 Yehudith Daughter of Beyri The Hitite

Rashi
---------------------------------------------------
The identity of the two wives is not as clear her but
we can use analogy with the other two wives to prove it.

Yehudith means JEWISH. Perhaps then Esauv called his wife
JEWISH to fool his father into thinking that she was
interested in his religion
----------------------------------------------------

Gn36-02b Ahalivamah Illegitimate Daughter of Anah the Hitite
Gn26-34 Yehudith Daughter of Beyri The Hitite
Differs *5 *3 *3 *2
COMMENTS
*1 BASMATH means PERFUME. This suggests that
she was involved in perfuming. Perhaps
- she always perfumed herself
- she offered perfume sacrifices to idolatry (Rashi)

*2 These phrases are the same showing that the two names refer
to the same person

*4 MACHLATH means ATONEMENT. But Gn26-33 states
------------------------------------------------
Esauv saw that his father did not like his
other wives so he married an Arab wife
------------------------------------------------

Perhaps then MACHLATH means that Esauv supplicated
for ATONEMENT for his former wives. (Rashi actually
suggests that he actually received atonement)

*3 This identity of Ahalivamah and Yehudith is less clear than the
identity of the other two wives. Perhaps we can justify the
assertion by appeal to analogy.

The word YEHUDITH means JEWISH. Perhaps then Esauv called his
wife JEWISH to fool his father into thinking that she was
interested in his religion.

One of Rashis 5 main goals is the explanation of meaning similar to the
way a dictionary explains meaning. We call this the Rashi rule of
WORD MEANING.

Rashi had 10 major vehicles by which to explain meaning. A major subrule
of MEANING is when Rashi paints a UNIFYING meaning to disparate meanings
of one root. We call this the method of UNIFYING MEANINGS.

Todays example is a peach of commentary showing the great intricacy
in explaining meaning

EXAMPLE Gn33-11a
----------------
The Biblical text states
-------------------------------------
Esauv, Please take from me, Jacob,
the BLESSING (BRK) brought to you
-------------------------------------

Rashi explains that
------------------------------------
The Hebrew root BRK besides meaning
BLESSING can also mean GIFT.
------------------------------------

Rashi says no more although he does give supportive verses.
But we can fully understand Rashi by using the resources provided
by other Jewish commentators.

First we use the RADACK who in his book ROOTS gives all meanings of
the root BRK. Second we borrow from the writings of Rabbi Hirsch
who suggests that the meaning KNEE is UNIFYING Let us examine

BRK MEANS
- KNEE
- TO KNEE THE CAMELS (= to make them rest on knees)
- POND - because you get on your knees to sip from a pond
- BLESS - Rav Hirsch argues that just as you EYE a scene, or
SMELL a situation or HAND an object so too you can
KNEEIZE A PERSON IN HIS PATH OF LIFE--here KNEEIZE
simply means to LEND THE PERSON A KNEE...the KNEES
fucntion is to facilitate movement so that KNEEIZING
A PERSON means BLESSING HIM--facilitating travel on
his path in life
From the meaning of BLESS we get 3 other meanings

- CURSE The PIEL grammatical mode can NEGATE a meaning--hence curse
- GREET FREQUENTLY you greet with a BLESSING (Hope all is well with
you)
- GIFT You frequently BLESS by giving a GIFT and BLESSING for more

Here we have used the principle of METONOMY which states that an
item (GREET GIFT) can be named by something RELATED TO IT.

Gn47-07 GREET*3 Jacob GREETED Pharoh You frequenty GREET by BLESSING
Gn33-11a GIFT*4 Take the GIFT I gave you You frequently BLESS by GIFTING
COMMENTS
*1 (Rav Hirsch) Just as you
- EYE a scene, or
- SMELL a situation, or
- HAND an object
So too you can
- KNEE-ize a PERSON ON HIS PATH IN LIFE

Here KNEE-ize means to LEND THE PERSON A KNEE. Since the
- LEG moves
- KNEE facilitates movement
therefore, TO KNEE means to FACILITATE the persons movement
on his path in life--that is, to BLESS him.

*2 The PIEL MODE often NEGATES a meaning. So the PIEL of BLESS is CURSE

*3 You FREQUENTLY greet by giving a blessing (eg HOW ARE YOU...MAY YOU
BE WELL or HAPPY THANKSGIVING). Here we use the METONOMY principle
of meaning which states that an item can be named by something
FREQUENTLY RELATED to it.

*4 You FREQUENTLY bring GIFTS when you bless someone (E.g. at a wedding)
Here we use the METONOMY principle which states that an item can
be named by something FREQUENTLY RELATED to it.

Rashi and Radack both list several verses where BRK means GIFT:
- Gn33-11 Take the Gift I give you
- 2K05-15 Take the gift from your servance
- Is66-03 Bringing GIFT offerings from theft(Radack)
