SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 5 main goals is to explain meaning the same way a dictionary explains meaning. We call this the Rashi rule of WORD MEANINGS Rashi had 10 vehicles to explain meaning. Rashi frequently explained the new idiomatic meanings of phrases of words--that is, the collection of words has a new meaning that is distinct from the sum of meanings of the individual words. We call this the RASHI SUBRULE of NEW MEANINGS (It could also be called the Rashi subrule of IDIOMS) EXAMPLE Gn44-20b ---------------- The Biblical text states -------------------------------------------- Benjamin remains ALONE TO his mother -------------------------------------------- Rashi paraphrased states --------------------------------------- The word combination ALONE TO means ONLY --------------------------------------- So according to Rashi the verse should be translated -------------------------------------------------- Benjamin is the ONLY remaining child of his mother -------------------------------------------------- LIST854h below presents several examples where ALONE TO means ONLY. LIST854z presents a big collection of Rashis explaining IDIOMS. EXAMPLE Gn44-18a ---------------- The Biblical text states ------------------------------------ Judah approach Joseph and said: Please let me SPEAK IN YOUR EARS... ------------------------------------ Rashi paraphrased states --------------------------------------------- SPEAK IN YOUR EARS connotes a SPECIAL REQUEST --------------------------------------------- This Rashi is easily understandable. Benjamin had been convicted of theft. Joseph wished to make him a slave. Judah therefore had to make a special request to rescind the slavery sentence. LIST854i below presents several verses where SPEAK IN YOUR EARS connotes a special request. LIST854z presents a big colleciton of Rashis explaining IDIOMS.

*1 Rashi points out 3 equally possible meanings - Youngest son (Son born while father was ELDERLY) - Wisest son (ELDER=WISDOM) - Son who resembles father (despite old age he still looks like son) *2 This is an example of a DOUBLE METONOMY Blood is ASSOCIATED with life and COVER is associated with denial. Hence COVER-BLOOD=conceal-murder *3 NOON is the midpoint between EVE and DAWN. Hence NOON is the BETWEEN THE EVES. *4 The context is the proposed marriage of 15 year old Rivkah to Isaac from another country. The offer had been made by the servant of Abraham to Rivkahs family The Biblical text states: Let us(her parents) ASK HER MOUTH This is the ONLY time in the Bible that this phrase occurs(The verb ASK occurs frequently). Apparently this phrase means - Lets DISCUSS or LETS GET AN OPINION*10 Such an interpretation is appropriate for a marriage decision *5 FIND-GRACE can equally mean I WISH YOU WELL or YOU WERE WISHED WELL. Rashi points out that GRACE by itself has this same connotation (Without the full phrase FIND GRACE). See LIST854g for further details *6 Tzade-Lamed-Ayin means SIDE (and hence can refer to the RIBS). Thus Ex30-04 speaks about the SIDE OF SIDES--that is the CORNER. *7 Actually the idiom consists of two parts - SQUEEZE the blood - use of the passive (Blood is SQUEEZED) Hence the idea that the slaughtered animal is pushed against the altar wall until the blood oozes forth. *8 In other words the WHITE PATCHES on the skin appear to be a DEEP WOUND (rather than a superficial skin discoloring) *11 *9 The Bible uses a variety of phrases to indicate lotteries such as - SHOOT A LOT Jo18-06 - THROW A LOT Jo18-08 - RAISE A LOT Jo18-11 - PLACE A LOT Lv16-08 - CAST A LOT Is34-17 *12
*10 Hence the Rashi on Gn24-57b: The Biblical text states that Rivkah responded: I WILL GO. But Rashi, surprisingly states: I WILL GO WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT. Why did Rashi read such an emphasis into the simple question and answer ------------------------------------------ PARENTS: Rivkah, Will you go with this man RIVKAH: I will go. ------------------------------------------ The answer is that the Bible says ------------------------------------------ PARENTS: We will DISCUSS THE MATTER with her; get her opinion PARENTS: Rivkah, Will you go with this man RIVKAH: I will go. ------------------------------------------ Thus the context shows that Rivkah was not INTERESTED IN A DISCUSSION--she had already made up her mind *11 Rashi appears to say the following --------------------------------------- ALL WHITE appears deep; like the SUNLIT part appears deeper than the SHADE --------------------------------------- But the sunlit part does NOT appear deeper than shade. Hence we interpret this Rashi as follows -------------------------------------------- [The skin whiteness is not speckled but] ALL WHITE; [it appears] deep like a BURN appears deeper than just on SURFACE OF SKIN --------------------------------------------- By comparing the capped words in these two interpretations of Rashi we infer that we interpret - ChaMMaH as meaning BURN vs SUNLIT - SHADE as referring to non-burnt skin (vs shade) We also interpret -- [The skin is] ALL WHITE (not speckled); It appears... vs -- ALL WHITE APPEARS DEEP (This is a change in punctuation) *12 Superficially these phrases seem to be the same However Rashi on Lv16-08 states that PLACE A LOT means CASTING A LOT and PLACING the WINNING/LOSING TICKETS on the winners/losers. *13 Rashis literal langauge is ------------------------------------ Dont have BIG-SMALL stones with one contradicting the other ------------------------------------ I however have translated the Biblical text as meaning ----------------------------------------------- Dont have DOUBLE STANDARD STONES--big small; (and you use them depending on the customer) ----------------------------------------------- I believe these two translations are the same-- - Rashi emphasized the "MECHANICS" of the act - I emphasized the NEW MEANING aspect of the Biblical words You need both aspects to fully understand Rashi *14 An ASTONISHED or STARTLED person temporarily loses their capacity to respond to the environment (The STARTLE reflex). Hence an ASTONISHED HEART refers to an EMOTION (=heart) where one cant respond-- namely APATHY *15 The phrase ITS YOUR TURN is used in a context where a favor had been done to a person who is now asked to reciprocate *16 See LIST854i for several examples *17 See LIST854h for several examples |

SUCCINT SUMMARY: ---------------- One of Rashis 5 main goals was the explanation of grammar similar to the explanations we find in modern textbooks. We call this the Rashi rule of GRAMMAR. Most people are familiar with those parts of grammar that deal with the individual word--for example, the rules of verb conjugation. However an equally important part of grammar are the rules of development in paragraphs: Given a paragraph theme what types of sentences can exist in that paragraph and what are their relations to the central theme. The rules of paragraph development also apply to chapter development: How are the constituent paragraphs of a chapter related to the central theme. For this reason we call this Rashi subrule, the rule of CONSECUTIVE PARAGRAPHS. Rashi knew 4 means of relating consecutive sentences or consecutive paragraphs in a paragraph or chapter: - CAUSE - CONTRAST - ENABLEMENT - UNIFYING THEME. EXAMPLE Gn47-23:25 ------------------ The text of Gn47-23:24 is given below: The bracketed inserts are not in the Biblical text but are comments of Rashi which indicate the flow of the text. -------------------------------------------------- Joseph said: I have bought you and your fields today for Pharoh. Now I give you seed so you can sow your field. But on the harvests you will give 20% to the Pharoh [since he owns the fields] and you can keep 80% for yourselves for future sowings, personal food needs, staff needs, and infant needs. And the people said [in response to this decree]: You have given us a new life. May we continue to find grace in Pharohs eyes [i.e. may this law continue] and we will remain [loyal] servants to Pharoh -------------------------------------------------- Rashi paraphrased states ----------------------------------------- The people-s statement should be seen as a response to Joseph-s offer: ----------------------------------------- To illustrate this we use the Bible statement ------------------------------------------------ And the people said you have given us a new life ------------------------------------------------ We have added below, in brackets, Rashis comments, that the above connects back to Josephs original offer ------------------------------------------------ And the people said [in response to this decree] you have given us a new life ------------------------------------------------ Thus the above is an example of development by CONTRAST---Joseph-s offer and the People-s response are seen as contrasts and complements to each other. LIST061b below gives several examples of Rashis on CONTRASTING or COMPLEMENTING principles.

*1 Rashi not only connects 2 paragraphs. He also connects all Biblical paragraphs in this chapter. See footnote *10 for further details *2 Dt28 gives a long list of curses if the Jews violate the commandments. Dt29-12 says "You are all STANDING before God today" In other words despite the curses for disobediance you are still here before God(The implication being that no matter how angry God gets he will not destroy you) A further support for this theme can come from the General-particular-General form Dt28 GENERAL: Curses for disobediance Dt29-12 PARTICULAR: You are standing here before God Dt29-19 GENERAL: Curses for disobediance Thus the General-Particular-General form shows that Gods curses still allow us to "Stand before him"--in other words they are educative curses not punitive. *3 In other words (always) "Observe the Sabbaths" DESPITE a request to the contrary "By your parents" This can happen if eg your parents ask you to desecrate the Sabbath. You must observe the Sabbath even if your parents request to the contrary. And this can be generalized to all Torah laws(that they take precedence over your parents request) *4 Wear Tzitzith DESPITE the fact that they may have Shaatnez Wool and linen together (In the priestly garments made of Linen the Tzitzith were made of wool--thus the commandment of Tzitzith OVERRIDES the prohibtion of wearing wool and linen) *5 More specifically Rashi (Dt10-12a) states --------------------------------------------- Despite the 5 rebellions that the Jews did against God, nevertheless, God still loves the Jews. In fact Dt10-12 states that all the Jews need do to earn this love is to revere God --------------------------------------------- *6 Rashis point is that Jacob did not ask Esauv ---------------------------- Past me and leave me behind ---------------------------- Rather Jacob suggested contrast ------------------------------------------------ - I must go at a gentle pace - you go at a normal pace ------------------------------------------------ A logical consequence of this contrast is that Esauv would pass Jacob and leave him behind. *7 The full Biblical text shows two rounds of dialogs between Moses and Joseph The Biblical text states as follows ---------------------------------------------------- Gn42-09 1 JOE: You are Spies Gn42-10:11 1 BROHTERS: NO(Contrast)--We are simple people Gn42-12 2 JOE: NO(Contrast) you are spies Gn42-13 2 BROTHERS: We are 12 sons;we came for food ---------------------------------------------------- *8 Gn47-25b and Gn47-25a both deal with the contrast of offer vs Thank you.
*10 On a superficial level Rashi seems to be connecting 2 verses. Avoid idolatry DESPITE your being a slave to a non jew (who encourages its violation). Do not think "I will worship idols now and when I am free I will go back to believing in God" On a profound level Rashi sees a unifying theme to this whole chapter. The chapter encourages observing the shimitah laws which encourage abstaining from agriculture once every 7 years so that people can devote themselves to God and study. If one violates these laws he is progressively punished. Here is the sequence of punishments {LIST} {Paragraphs in BEHAR} ------------------------------------------------------- VERSE LAW ------------ ------------------------------------------ Lv25-01:12 Observe the 7 and 50 year Land sabbaticals Lv25-13:24 If not you will have to sell your MOVABLES Lv25-25:28 If not you will have to sell your LAND Lv25-29:34 If not you will have to sell your HOUSE Lv25-35:38 If not you will have to LOAN Lv25-39:46 If not you will have to become a SLAVE Lv25-47:54 If not you'll become a NONJEWISH SLAVE Lv26-01:03 If not you'll be tempted to IDOLATRY --------------------------------------------------------- Thus Rashi does not merely teach juxtaposition of verses but he also teaches juxtaposition of ALL paragraphs in the chapter. |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 5 main goals is the explanation of meaning similar to the way a dictionary explains meaning. We call this the Rashi rule of WORD MEANING. Rashi had 10 major vehicles by which to explain meaning. A major subrule of MEANING is when Rashi paints a UNIFYING meaning to disparate meanings of one root. We call this the method of UNIFYING MEANINGS. Todays example is a peach of commentary showing the great intricacy in explaining meaning EXAMPLE Gn47-10a Gn47-07a -------------------------- The Biblical text at Gn47-10a and Gn47-07a uses the Biblical root Beth-Resh-Caph. This root is usually translated as BLESSED. Using this usual translation the Biblical text is literally translated as ------------------------------------------------------ Jacob BLESSED (Beth-resh-caph) Pharoh when he met him Jacob BLESSED (Beth-REsh-caph) Pharoh and left ------------------------------------------------------ Rashi in his commentary to both Gn47-10a and Gn47-07a states ----------------------------------------------------------- The root Beth-Resh-Caph, in these verses, connotes GREETING ----------------------------------------------------------- We can understand Rashi-s comment using the dictionary principle of METONOMY. METONOMY refers to the process whereby an object or process is named by something RELATED to it--- here the process of GREETING is named by the term BLESSING since it is common when GREETING someone to WISH THEM WELL or GIVE THEM SOME BLESSING. Ru02-04 gives a natural example of this: When Boaz met the workers in his field he greeted them with the blessing: MAY GOD BE WITH YOU. We can gain further insight in the root Beth-Resh-Caph by using the RADACK and RAV HIRSCH. RADACK in his book, BIBLICAL ROOTS, presents all meaning of the root Beth-Resh-Caph. Rabbi Hirsch in his commentary on the Bible suggests that the meaning KNEE is the UNIFYING theme to all meanings of the root Beth-Resh-Caph. Let us examine BRK MEANS - KNEE - TO KNEE THE CAMELS (= to make them rest on knees) - POND - because you get on your knees to sip from a pond - BLESS - Rav Hirsch argues that just as you EYE a scene, or SMELL a situation or HAND an object so too you can KNEE-IZE A PERSON IN HIS PATH OF LIFE--here KNEE-IZE simply means to LEND THE PERSON A KNEE...the KNEE-S fucntion is to facilitate movement so that KNEE-IZING A PERSON means BLESSING HIM--facilitating travel on his path in life From the meaning of BLESS we get 3 other meanings - CURSE The PIEL grammatical mode can NEGATE a meaning--hence curse - GREET FREQUENTLY you greet with a BLESSING (Hope all is well with you) - GIFT You frequently BLESS by giving a GIFT and BLESSING for more Here we have used the principle of METONOMY which states that an item (GREETING, GIFT) can be named by something RELATED TO IT. LIST863O below summarizes these meanings and their relation to knee. Some readers may not concur with Rav Hirsch-s analysis. The LIST863O below also presents verses where Beth-Resh-Caph means GREETING. This should suffice to explain the Rashi.

*1 (Rav Hirsch) Just as you - EYE a scene, or - SMELL a situation, or - HAND an object So too you can - KNEE-ize a PERSON ON HIS PATH IN LIFE Here KNEE-ize means to LEND THE PERSON A KNEE. Since the - LEG moves - KNEE facilitates movement therefore, TO KNEE means to FACILITATE the persons movement on his path in life--that is, to BLESS him. *2 The PIEL MODE often NEGATES a meaning. So the PIEL of BLESS is CURSE *3 You FREQUENTLY greet by giving a blessing (eg HOW ARE YOU...MAY YOU BE WELL or HAPPY THANKSGIVING). Here we use the METONOMY principle of meaning which states that an item can be named by something FREQUENTLY RELATED to it. *4 You FREQUENTLY bring GIFTS when you bless someone (E.g. at a wedding) Here we use the METONOMY principle which states that an item can be named by something FREQUENTLY RELATED to it. Rashi and Radack both list several verses where BRK means GIFT: - Gn33-11 Take the Gift I give you - 2K05-15 Take the gift from your servance - Is66-03 Bringing GIFT offerings from theft(Radack) *5 RADAK translates this as COMPROMISE --------------------------------------------- Make a COMPROMISE/DEAL with me and come out to me and I will reciprocate and give you.... --------------------------------------------- However RADAK concedes there is no other verse where Beth-Resh-Caph means DEAL or COMPROMISE. Our translation -------------------------------------------------------- - GREET ME--and COME OUT TO ME--and I will give you your - vineyards and figfields -------------------------------------------------------- seems admissable and is consistent with the context of the chapter (Assyria was camping against Jerusalem...so he asked for GREETINGS and COMING OUT). |
