SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- The GRAMMAR method seeks to explain basic Biblical grammar the same way modern textbooks explain grammar GRAMMAR covers a broad variety of topics. Today we focus on the skillful use of sentence REARRANGEMENT to clarify meaning. EXAMPLE Ex30-18c ---------------- The Biblical text at Ex30-18c states ------------------------------------------------ Make a -copper lavern and a -copper foundation TO WASH ------------------------------------------------ Rashi comments -------------------------------------- The verse should be read - - - - - - - - - - - - - Make a - copper lavern TO WASH, and a - copper foundation - - - - - - - - - - - - - -------------------------------------- Notice how Rashi reinterprets the verse by rearranging the place of the word WASH. Here Rashi uses the rule of REARRANGEMENT LIST076a below gives other Rashis whose principle is REARRANGEMENT

*1 Some adult humor: Amusingly---she did not openly bathe in the Nile---rather she bathed in a bath house that was located near the Nile- This is made clearer by the rearrangement *2 Some adult humor here The wife in effect teased her husband ------------------------------------------------------ The slave YOU BROUGHT TO PLAY WITH ME (did) come to me ------------------------------------------------------ Her delerately ambiguous language was designed to provoke her husbands anger. She in effect said --------------------------------------------------------- You knew his obsession with his appearance. You gave him power. You must have expected this to happen --------------------------------------------------------- |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- The BULLET method seeks to make textual inferences from paragraph and bullet structure. EXAMPLE: Bulleted text of Ex30-23:24 ------------------------------------ The bulleted text reads as follows ----------------------------------------------------------- THEME Moses, Take THEME HEAD perfumes DETAIL Mor 500 units of weight DETAIL Knmn 500 units of weight DETAIL KaNH 250 units of weight DETAIL Kidah 500 units of weight DETAIL Olive oil 1 unit of volume ----------------------------------------------------------- The Bulleted structure allows several inferences - Ex30-24a: Kidah an unknown Hebrew word is a PERFUME like the other items in the list Here Rashi uses inference by bulleted structure - Ex30-23a: There are no units in the opening phrase-- HEAD PERFUMES--hence Rashi re-interprets the phrase to mean DISTINGUISHED PERFUMES (i.e. the HEAD perfumes are the CHIEF and BEST perfumes).

*1 The Bulleted structure allows several inferences Ex30-24a: Kidah an unknown Hebrew word is a PERFUME like the other items in the list *2 Note how the phrase HEAD PERFUMES stands by itself without numerical weights associated with it. This leads Rashi to reinterpret the phrase as meaning DISTINGUISHED PERFUMES (Ex30-23a) |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- The WORD MEANING method seeks to explain dictionary meaning. Rashi had 10 vehicles to explain meaning. Words can be named by EIGHT METHODS including naming by FORM, FUNCTION and FEEL. For example both the UNITED NATIONS and PENTAGON are organizations which protect. However the PENTAGON is named by its FORM while the UNITED NATIONS is named by its FUNCTION and GOAL (To unite nations). EXAMPLE Ex30-18b ---------------- The Hebrew root, Caph-Vav-Nun means to PREPARE, MAKE FIRM, LAY A FOUNDATION. Hence the word Caph-Nun means a FOUNDATION TABLE, a table on which other items --- flowers, wash-basins etc --- are placed. Here the word Caph-Nun is named by its FUNCTION and PURPOSE---to be a foundation to other objects. LIST810c belows presents other examples of items named by FUNCION

EXAMPLE Ex30-34a Ex30-34b Ex30-34c ---------------------------------- - The DRIP is a perfume which DRIPS from tree bark. Hence the DRIP is named by its FORM - The FATTY is a perfume which smells like putrid FAT Hence the FATTY is named by how it FEELS - The SHINY is a perfume which is SHINY Hence the SHINY is named by its FORM LIST813b below gives others examples of items named by FORM LIST819a below gives other examples of items named by FEEL (The best know English example of an item named by FEEL is HARDSHIP). SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- The STYLE method seeks to describe paragraph style and indicate which ideas are main ideas and which ideas are illustrative examples. The THEME-DETAIL-THEME style is used to indicate a MAIN THEME followed by ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES and DETAILS. EXAMPLE Ex30-34d,Ex30-34e ------------------------- Ex30-34 discusses the perfume ingredients of the Temple perfume. The structure used is GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL - GENERAL: Take perfumes - DETAILS: ------------- Drippy, Shiny, Fatty perfumes - GENERAL: Perfumes and - ------- pure frankincense Each of these perfumes had specific characteristics - DRIPPY perfume was gathered from BARK DRIPS - SHINY perfume came from SHINY looking plants - FATTY perfume smelled like putrid FAT The GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL style requires that we perceive the entire unit as a paragraph with a general theme. Therefore we generalize the DETAILS listed to ANYTHING SIMILAR to them that fits the GENERAL theme. Hence we take all similar perfumes (those that drip, those that are shiny and those that are bad smelling). The PURE FRANKINCENSE is mentioned SEPARATELY and is added as is. LIST450L summarizes this approach SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- The SYMBOLISM method seeks to find verses which MUST be interpreted symbolically. The SYMBOLISM method also tells us the rules governing the symbolic interpretation. Rashi gives SYMBOLIC meaning to the items in Ex30-34 - SHINY perfume refers to FLASHY people on the go - FATTY perfume refers to OBESE people who dont control themselves and always say yes - DRIPPY perfume refers to STATELY PEOPLE who do things BIT by BIT (Drop by drop) and know how to exercise restraint. All three people types are needed in the community and this is symbolized by the KETORETH which had all ingredients. LIST975j summarizes these symbolic arguments.

*10 Rashi gives the 11 ingredients of the Ketoreth.
