SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Rashi frequently makes powerful inferences from the alignment of ALMOST similar verses. The minor variations between these almost similar verses suggests nuances and differences or even meaning. We call this the Rashi rule of ALIGNMENT When Rashi infers MEANING from the ALIGNMENT of almost identical phrases we call this the Rashi SUBRULE of MEANING. When Rashi identifies two cases from the ALIGNMENT we call this the Rashi subrule of TWO CASES EXAMPLE: Types of Baking loafs ----------------------------- There are 3 sets of verses discussing the types of loafs that are offering in the REST offering. Ex29-02 speaks about -------------------- - Matzoh MIXED with oil - wafers ANNOINTED with oil Lv02 speaks about ----------------- - Matzoh MIXED with oil (Lv02-05) - wafers ANNOINTED with oil(Lv02-06) - flour BAKED/ROASTED in oil (Lv02-07:08) Lv07-12c speaks about --------------------- - Matzoh MIXED with oil - Matzoh ANNOINTED with oil - Flour Mem-Resh-Beth-Caph with oil Notice how all 3 chapters begin with MIXED-WITH-OIL and ANNOINTED-WITH-OIL. Consequently we conclude that Mem-Resh-Beth-Caph with oil means BAKED/ROASTED in oil. This inference is made from the alignment. In passing: The biblical root: Resh-Beth-Caph rarely occurs in the Bible. Hence in this case we actually infer meaning from the ALIGNMENT. Note that we can only infer the general idea of baked in oil without knowing the precise halachic details. LIST343r below summarizes this alignment. In the next example we have an alignment which clearly shows TWO CASES that contrast each other. More specifically Lv07-24a states ---------------------------------------------- the FAT of carcasses will be used for WORK - - - - - - - but can not be EATEN ---------------------------------------------- From the contrasting alignment we infer that - a person may BENEFIT from FAT carcass(as long as they dont eat it) - FAT CARCASS does not confer ritual impurity (Otherwise it could not be used for temple work) LIST313x below summarizes this alignment.

*1 So carcass fat can be -benefitted from as long as you are not eating -does not confer ritual impurity (Because otherwise you couldnt work with them in the temple) |

*1 - There is no 3rd type of REST OFFERING mentioned in Ex29-02 - Lv02-05:08 speaks about FRIED IN PAN // BAKED-ROASTED in POT - Lv07-12c speaks about Loaves that are Resh-Beth-Caph. Hence we infer from the alignment that the root Resh-Beth-Caph means ROASTED/BAKED thoroughly in oil*10 (We can only infer the general idea of thorough baking from the alignment--we cannot infer specific halachic details)
|

*10 A similar point is made on Lv06-14a |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Rashi frequently made inferences based on the Biblical STYLE. We call this Rashi Rule the RABBI ISHMAEL STYLE rule. A powerful style rule was the painting of a verse in a CLIMACTIC DEVELOPMENT manner. We call this the RASHI SUBRULE of CLIMAX EXAMPLE Lv07-15 TIMES TO EAT REST OFFERING --------------------------------------------- Lv07-15 states ----------------------------------------------------- As for the meat of the peace offering - on the DAY OF THE OFFERING it is eaten - dont leave over till the MORNING (of the next day) ----------------------------------------------------- Rashi paraphrased ---------------------------------------------- We see 3 stages - on the DAY OF THE OFFERING--it is eaten - on the following night------no scriptural dictate - the next morning------------prohibited Hence the Rabbinic prohibition of eating past midnight (So as to mirror the following stages) - DAY OF OFFERING ---- MUST eat - NIGHT OF OFFERING--- MAY eat till midnight - 2nd DAY TO OFFERING- PROHIBITED to eat ---------------------------------------------- Here Rashi uses the principle of CLIMAX to study how how a Rabbinic prohibition was used LIST450v summarizes this sequence.

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 5 main goals was the resolution of contradiction We call this the RASHI RULE OF CONTRADICTION. Rashi had a variety of methods to resolve contradiction. Very often the CONTRADICTION could be resolved by interpreting the contradictory verses BROADLY thereby avoiding the contradiction. EXAMPLE Lv07-19c vs Dt12-27 --------------------------- We have two verses discussing which non priests eat from PEACE OFFERINGs - Dt12-27 states ------------------------------------------------- [After] The blood of your sacrifice is spilled on the altar then YOU may eat the meat ------------------------------------------------- - Lv07-19c states -------------------------------------------------- And the meat of the peace offering: All pure people may eat of the meat -------------------------------------------------- This creates a contradiction since - Dt01-27 implies that only the OWNER may eat it(YOU eat it) - Lv07-19c implies that ANY PURE PERSON can eat it. We avoid this contradiction by interpreting Dt12-27 BROADLY -------------------------------------------------------- [After] The blood of your sacrifice is spilled on the altar then YOU AND ANY OF YOUR FRIENDS may eat the meat ------------------------------------------------- EXAMPLE - Lv06-22a vs Lv06-19 ----------------------------- In speaking about who may eat of the sin offering - Lv06-19 states ---------------------------------------- The PRIEST offering the sin offering will eat it ---------------------------------------- - Lv06-22a states ---------------------------------------- All MALE PRIESTS may eat it ---------------------------------------- These verses appear contradictory. To avoid this contradiction we interpret Lv06-19 BROADLY --------------------------------------------- The PRIEST WHO COULD OFFER the sin offering can eat it --------------------------------------------- In other words we interpret the phrase - THE OFFERING PRIEST WILL EAT IT to be a paradigmatic example---any priest who is pure enough to offer it may eat it. This interpretation of OFFERING PRIEST as PRIEST WHO COULD POTENTITALLY OFFER is also echoed in Rashi on Lv07-07b. LIST520a below presents other verse pairs where contradiction is resolved thru BROAD-LITERAL usage

VERSE-1 | VERSE-2 | HOW THE TWO TEXTS ARE COMBINED
Lv07-19c | Dt01-27 | All PURE PEOPLE whom the owner DESIGNATESeat
Lv06-22a | Lv06-19 | All MALE PRIESTS who COULD OFFER may eat*2
Ex21-06 | Lv25-10 | Slave works FOREVER = Till 50th Jubilee year
Ex11-08a | Ex12-30 | Your SERVANTS=ROYAL PRESENCE shall expel me
Ex12-19a | Ex13-07 | Prohibits bread in your HOUSE/BORDERS=DOMAIN
Dt15-17 | Lv25-10 | Slaves work FOREVER=A LONG TIME=TILL JUBILEE
Lv07-09 | Lv07-10 | The PRIEST=DIVSION OF PRIEST,gets sacrifice
Lv04-03 | Lv04-03 | A Young ADULT Bullock = BEGINNING ADULTHOOD
Lv10-02 | Lv10-05 | Died from FIRE=SPIRITUAL FIRE*1
|
|||
*1 Hence the fire did not burn their clothes The idea that the FIRES mentioned in Dt05 or Ex20 was the FIRE OF PROPHECY vs REAL FIRE is supported by many verses and themes (Dt05-21). There are other Biblical supports for this idea but this will suffice for now.*10 *2 Also echoed in Rashi Lv07-07b (OFFERING PRIEST means PRIESTS WHO COULD OFFER)
|
|||
*10 It does not detract from the greatness of the miracle of revelation that the FIRE means FIRE OF PROPHECY. For Judaism does not view Gods greatness in His ability to make a mountain smoke with Fire. Rather Judaism views Gods greatness in His ability to make people burn with Spiritual Prophecy |
