SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- All languages have a variety of methods to indicate EMPHASIS and SIMILARLITY. Modern typesetting methods use BOLD and ITALICS to indicate EMPHASIS. Modern typesetting methods use BULLETS to indicate SIMILARITY. The Bible did not have BOLD and ITALICS. Rather the Bible used REPETITION to indicate emphasis. This emphasis could in turn either indicate BROADENING or RESTRICTION of meaning. EXAMPLE Lv13-35a ---------------- The Biblical text at Lv13-35a states --------------------------------------------- but if the leprosy SPREADS SPREADS after it becomes PURE --------------------------------------------- Rashi comments ------------------------------------------------- Notice the repeated phrase: - SPREAD SPREAD The repetition creates emphasis. ---------------------------------- - If the leprosy spreads - - whether after it becomes pure - - or while it is still impure ---------------------------------- LIST150a below gives other examples where REPETITION creates broad emphasis. EXAMPLE Lv13-44a ---------------- The Biblical text of Lv13-32:45 is as follows ---------------------------------------------------- If on his baldness there is pinkish affiction then leprosy is sprouting in his baldness; the priest reviews and confirms the pinkish affliction in his baldness just like skin leprosy...[then] this person is leprous and is ritually impure; the priest shall DECLARE DECLARE him impure and the lepor with the affliction: his garments shall be rent and his head left wild.... ----------------------------------------------------- Rashi comments on the repeated words DECLARE DECLARE ----------------------------------------------------- The words DECLARE DECLARE encourage a BROAD interpretation of this chapter: The requirements of declaration, garment renting and head left wild apply not only to the subject of the chapter---a bald person with leprosy---but apply to ANY lepor ----------------------------------------------------- LIST150a presents verses where Repetition motivates a broad interpretation of words. | ||

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 5 main goals was the resolution of contradiction We call this the RASHI RULE OF CONTRADICTION. Rashi had a variety of methods to resolve contradiction. Very often the CONTRADICTION could be resolved by viewing the contradictory properties as applying to TWO CASES. We call this the Rashi SUBRULE of TWO CASES. EXAMPLE Lv13-33 SHAVING OF LEPROSY ---------------------------------- Lv13-33 speaks about a leprosy on the head -------------------------------------------- -HE SHALL SHAVE -HE SHALL NOT SHAVE the leprous spot -------------------------------------------- Note the contradiction: He is told to shave and to not shave! Rashi resolves this thru the method of 2 cases ----------------------------------------------- - the leprous spot IS NOT shaved - the rest of the head IS SHAVED ----------------------------------------------- However, the leprous spot on the head was typically partially bald. Therefore Rashi elaborates ----------------------------------------------------- - the leprous spot IS NOT SHAVED - the PERIMETER of the leprous spot is NOT SHAVED (A 2 hair perimeter is left around the leprous spot to indicate its borders since otherwise, if we shaved the entire rest of the head, then we would not be able to recognize when the leprous spot spreads) | ||

*1 See Lv26-03. Thus Lv26-03:06 explicitly states that when we observe, God will remove wild animals. Dt08-02 by contrast, explains that conquest of Israel will happen slowly FOR IF IT HAPPEEND QUICKLY WILD ANIMALS WOULD COME (because the Jews moral nature was not yet perfected and the protection of Lv26-03:06 does not yet apply) *11 *2 COARSE flour was used in cooking to wash the pot sides to clear it from rust producing agents and rotted food particles. *3 I should mention the Brilliant Malbim who points out to a repeated object denoting emphasis ----------------------------------------- She opened it and saw HIM -- a CHILD ----------------------------------------- Thus the child had a certain regality *12 *4 This distinction is explicitly mentioned in Ex01-10 Pharoh was concerned that the Jewish minority would align with an Egyptian enemy. Hence he killed the males. *13 *5 See Lv08-16:21 for Moses acting as a Priest. During this brief period Moses used the Temple Basin. | |||
|
|||
*10 Rashis point is strengthened by the abrupt change of subject ----------------------------------------------- Nu04-04 This is the job of the KEHATHITES Nu04-05 The PRIESTS come and cover the articles ... Nu04-15 ..and AFTERWARDS the KEHATHITES come ----------------------------------------------- If one just reads Nu04-04 and Nu04-05 by themselves it appears as if the PRIESTS mentioned in Nu04-05 refer back to the KEHATHITES mentioned in Nu04-04 *11 Interesting Rashi cites a verse in Job rather than the explicit Lv26-03:06. Rashi also does not explicitly mention that he is using the rule of resolving 2 contradictory cases. But that IS what Rashi does. It seems rather straightforward to introduce Lv26-03:06. Rashi probably expected the reader to know this verse since it comes in the great REBUKE---Rashi complements this verses with complementary verses in Job *12 Rashis actual language is that ------------------------------------ She saw Gods presence with him ------------------------------------ I have tempered this a bit as follows --------------------------- She saw the childs regality --------------------------- I think Rashis point is to explain why she risked her life to save a Jewish child This child was different--he had a certain regality...why not raise him as an Egyptian He would fit in well with the Royal house *13 Rashi actually says ------------------------------------------ Pharohs astrologers said that the Jews have just had a male savior born. Pharoh therefore decreed the death of the male Jews ------------------------------------------ However the REAL driving force of Rashi is the contradictory verses and the resolution from an explicit verse. Rashi avails himself of OTHER VERSES which show that Pharoh always consulted with his astrologers (eg Ex08-12:15). Thus Rashi is simply dressing up the contradiction. The real point of Rashi is the contradiction and the distinction between the people(hated all) and the King. (concerned about security) |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Rashi frequently comments by making broad database queries and noting patterns. The example today is a peach of an example showing how deep inferences can be made by broad but simply formulated database queries. EXAMPLE: Lv13-02c Lv14-36a -------------------------- We make a query of BEING IN A STATE OF UNCLEANLINESS We see 4 formulations - IT IS UNCLEAN (Adjective form) - You will BECOME UNCLEAN (Active Mode) - You can BECOME UNCLEAN (Reflexive mode) However by contrast we find throuhgout the leprosy laws - The priest shall UNCLEAN IT (Causative mode) Here we have coined the term TO UNCLEAN...to make unclean. From this contrast Rashi infers - other uncleanlinesses are OBJECTIVE (eg a pig is unclean) - Leprosy uncleanliness must be DECLARED (If the priest declares the person unclean he becomes unclean; otherwise even though he has all the leprosy signs he is not yet UNCLEAN till the Priest declares it) | ||

Query of IT IS UNCLEAN vs UNLCEAN IT(Declare it) | ||||
VERSE | FORMULATION | TEXT OF VERSE | DOMAIN | |
Lv11-04 | Adjective | IT IS UNCLEAN | Kashruth | |
Lv11-29 | Adjective | These are UNCLEAN... | The Dead | |
------ | --------- | -------------------------- | -------- | |
Lv11-24 | Reflexive | You can BECOME UNCLEAN by it | The Dead | |
------ | --------- | -------------------------- | -------- | |
Lv11-24 | Active Mode | BE UNCLEAN TILL EVE | The Dead | |
Lv11-32 | Active Mode | Shall Become UNCLEAN | The Dead | |
Lv12-04 | Active Mode | She shall become UNCLEAN | Birth | |
------ | --------- | -------------------------- | -------- | |
Lv13-02c | Causative Mode | The PRIEST SHALL UNCLEAN IT | Leprosy | |
Lv13-20 | Causative Mode | The PRIEST SHALL UNCLEAN IT | Leprosy*1 | |
|
||||
*1 Thus the table is clear - Other UNCLEANLINESS is OBJECTIVE--it is a state or reality Birth CREATES a state of uncleanliness - By contrast, Leprosy uncleanliness must be DECLARED -- the leprosy signs by themselves do not confer UNCLEANLINESS until a PRIEST formally DECLARES the person UNCLEAN. |
