SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 5 main goals was the resolution of contradiction We call this the RASHI RULE OF CONTRADICTION. Rashi had a variety of methods to resolve contradiction. Very often the CONTRADICTION could be resolved by viewing the contradictory properties as applying to TWO CASES. We call this the Rashi SUBRULE of TWO CASES. EXAMPLE Lv19-20e vs Lv20-10 --------------------------- Compare the contradiction in the following verses: ------------------------------------------------- - Lv19-20e Sleeping with engaged maid, NO DEATH - Lv20-10 Sleeping with married woman, YES DEATH ------------------------------------------------- Rashi elegantly resolves the contradiction by citing Lv19-20 ---------------------------------------------- The engaged maid adulterers are NOT put to death because, as the verse says, SHE HAS NOT BEEN FREED By contrast the adulterers (among free people) are put to death ----------------------------------------------- EXAMPLE: Lv19-13c Dt24-15 ---------------------------------------------- Compare the apparent contradiction in the following verses ------------------------------------------------------- - Lv19-13c the wages of a laborer shall not stay OVERNIGHT - Dt24-15 ..give the laborer his wages by SUNSET -------------------------------------------------------- Rashi (greatly paraphrased) ------------------------------------------------ There is no supporting verse to suggest the two cases that resolve this contradiction. We therefore have to use logic. - A day laborer should be paid SOMETIME during the night The owner is given time AFTER COMPLETION OF THE JOB to seek out money to pay him - Similarly a NIGHT LABORER should be paid by SUNSET of the following day: Again, giving time to the owner to find wages - The underlying principle is that on short term labor time is given to the owner to find wages after revuing the completion of the labor. (For month and week labor the wages must be given at the end of the period) - Interestingly, I have pointed out that this is one of those laws where Rashi is logical and elaborate while the Rambam in his great code does not give reasons and is rather terse -------------------------------------------------- LIST510a below summarizes other cases where Biblical contradictions are resolved by 2 cases.

*1 See Lv26-03. Thus Lv26-03:06 explicitly states that when we observe, God will remove wild animals. Dt08-02 by contrast, explains that conquest of Israel will happen slowly FOR IF IT HAPPEEND QUICKLY WILD ANIMALS WOULD COME (because the Jews moral nature was not yet perfected and the protection of Lv26-03:06 does not yet apply) *11 *2 COARSE flour was used in cooking to wash the pot sides to clear it from rust producing agents and rotted food particles. *3 I should mention the Brilliant Malbim who points out to a repeated object denoting emphasis ----------------------------------------- She opened it and saw HIM -- a CHILD ----------------------------------------- Thus the child had a certain regality *12 *4 This distinction is explicitly mentioned in Ex01-10 Pharoh was concerned that the Jewish minority would align with an Egyptian enemy. Hence he killed the males. *13 *5 See Lv08-16:21 for Moses acting as a Priest. During this brief period Moses used the Temple Basin.

*10 Rashis point is strengthened by the abrupt change of subject ----------------------------------------------- Nu04-04 This is the job of the KEHATHITES Nu04-05 The PRIESTS come and cover the articles ... Nu04-15 ..and AFTERWARDS the KEHATHITES come ----------------------------------------------- If one just reads Nu04-04 and Nu04-05 by themselves it appears as if the PRIESTS mentioned in Nu04-05 refer back to the KEHATHITES mentioned in Nu04-04 *11 Interesting Rashi cites a verse in Job rather than the explicit Lv26-03:06. Rashi also does not explicitly mention that he is using the rule of resolving 2 contradictory cases. But that IS what Rashi does. It seems rather straightforward to introduce Lv26-03:06. Rashi probably expected the reader to know this verse since it comes in the great REBUKE---Rashi complements this verses with complementary verses in Job *12 Rashis actual language is that ------------------------------------ She saw Gods presence with him ------------------------------------ I have tempered this a bit as follows --------------------------- She saw the childs regality --------------------------- I think Rashis point is to explain why she risked her life to save a Jewish child This child was different--he had a certain regality...why not raise him as an Egyptian He would fit in well with the Royal house *13 Rashi actually says ------------------------------------------ Pharohs astrologers said that the Jews have just had a male savior born. Pharoh therefore decreed the death of the male Jews ------------------------------------------ However the REAL driving force of Rashi is the contradictory verses and the resolution from an explicit verse. Rashi avails himself of OTHER VERSES which show that Pharoh always consulted with his astrologers (eg Ex08-12:15). Thus Rashi is simply dressing up the contradiction. The real point of Rashi is the contradiction and the distinction between the people(hated all) and the King. (concerned about security) |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 10 main goals is the explanation of meaning the same way a dictionary explains meaning. We call this the Rashi method of WORD MEANING. Today we examine two meaning submethods of Rashi. EXAMPLE: IDIOMS --------------- Rashi frequently explains not, word meaning, but rather phrase meaning. That is each particular word in the phrase may have a known meaning but the collection of words together form a NEW IDIOMATIC MEANING. We call this the NEW MEANING or the IDIOM SUBMETHOD. EXAMPLE: Lv19-10b LQ@ --------------------- Lv19-10 states ---------------------------------------- Dont glean the GLEANINGS OF YOUR HARVEST ---------------------------------------- Rashi comments ------------------------------------ The phrase THE GLEANINGS OF YOUR HARVEST refers to individual shafts of harvest crop that fall during the gleaning process---(The Torah prohibits picking them up since they already fell and the poor need them) ------------------------------------ Similarly Lv19-09 states ------------------------------------------ Don't glean the ISOLATONS OF YOUR VINEYARD ------------------------------------------ Rashi comments ------------------------------------- The ISOLATONS OF YOUR VINEYARD is an idiom referring to individual grapes that fall during harvest--(The Torah prohibits picking them up since they already fell and the poor need them ------------------------------------- Lv19-20b states ------------------------------------- If a man sleeps with a woman whose REDEMPTION IS NOT REDEEMED ------------------------------------- Rashi comments ------------------------------------- The phrase REDEMPTION IS NOT REDEEMED refers to an INCOMPLETE REDEMPTION ------------------------------------- It is a MISTAKE to look at this logically: Rashi is NOT being picky on the verse--- he is not stating---THE REDEMPTION [which had begun] IS NOT REDEEMED [i.e. completed] Rather, Rashi is simply stating that REDEMPTION IS NOT REDEEMED is a Hebrew idiom meaning INCOMPLETE. All idioms should similarly be taken. LIST854y below gives further examples of Biblical idioms.

*1 Some other examples of this idiom occur at Ex32-09 Ex33-04 Ex33-05 Ex34-09 Dt09-06 Dt09-13 Pr29-01 *2 That is: The animal - chews - regurgitates the chewed material - redigests it Hence RAISES ITS WINDPIPE is a good idiom describing it
|
||||
*10 Rashi lays down numerical criteria ------------------------------------ - If one or two shafts fall it is GLEANING OF HARVEST - If three shafts fall it is not a GLEANING ------------------------------------ Various ingenious defenses of these numerical criteria have been presented. However, I quite simply follow the Talmudic dictum ------------------------------------------------ Numerical criteria are oral traditions handed down to Moses at Sinai ------------------------------------------------ So the fact that THREE refers to PLURALITY while ONE AND TWO refer to ISOLATED INDIVIDUALS (not a group) is an oral tradition and beyond the ken of Biblical exegesis |
