SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
Sometimes Rashi will make sweeping pattern inferences from
broad database inquiries. We call this the Rashi method
of DATABASES.

EXAMPLE: Remains of Priestly procedures
------------------------------------------
- It is well known that dead animals confer ritual impurity
- similarly the impure rocks taken from houses are impure
- by contrast to the above sacrifice ash remains are pure

The emphasis here is that even though the ashes are remains
of dead animals nevertheless they are not impure.

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
A major Rashi method is the ALIGNMENT method. The
ALIGNMENT rule makes inferences from the alignment of
almost identical verses or phrases. When the inferences
are NUANCES that are implied by the minor differences
in the aligned verses we say that Rashi is using the
subrule of NUANCES.

EXAMPLE Lv02-02 Lv06-08c
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Lv02-02 Take a fistful from her flour and from her oil
Lv06-08c Take a fistful from the flour of the minchah and from her oil
Differs *1 *2 *3
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Notice the emphasis in difference #2: FLOUR OF THE MINCHAH
From this emphasis we infer the law that the fistful has
to be individual to each minchah offering (One cannot mix
offerings and if they are mixed they are not offered)

LIST308O below summarizes this alignment.

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 10 main goals is the explanation of word
meaning similar to the function of a dictionary. We call
this the Rashi rule of WORD MEANING.

Rashi had 10 vehicles by which to explain word meaning.
Sometimes Rashi would employ techniques of meaning common
to all languages. All languages have methods of creating
NEW MEANINGS: Some common examples are naming the COLOR
cherry by the FRUIT, CHERRY(Naming by appearance); or
the interchange of WHOLE and PARTS (e.g. day=12 hour day vs
24 hour day). The interchange of WHOLE and PARTS we call
METONOMY

EXAMPLE--TEMPLE(Aleph-Hey-Lamed Mem-Ayin-Vav-Daleth)
----------------------------------------------------
The word TEMPLE (Ohel Moayd) equally refers to the
- Entire Temple(Courtyard, Temple Building, HOlies)
- Temple Building proper
This follows the principle of Metonomy.

LIST871n below presents several verses with TEMPLE.
- In some of the verses the phrase BEFORE GOD, ENTRANCE
TO THE TEMPLE is used, indicating that Temple there
means TEMPLEYARD, even in the COURTYARD.

- In some verses the word TEMPLE means TEMPLE building
This is inferred from contrast with previous verses
as well as with consideration of what was being
done in the temple. For example in Lv04 they speak
about doing the following to an offering:
- slaughter the ox BEFORE GOD, BY ENTRANCE TO TEMPLE
- bring BLOOD to TEMPLE
- sprinkle blood on PAROCETH (The HOLY CURTAIN)

This suggets
- slaughter in TEMPLEYARD
- bring blood into TEMPLE BUILDING
- sprinkle on PAROCETH (Temple veil) in TEMPLE BUILDING
(Since the sprinkling was done in the temple building
the blood had to be brought into the temple building
--consequently TEMPLE means TEMPLE BUILDING).

- LIST871n also contains verses where the word
TEMPLE is used without the word ENTRAnCE
but it appears best to translate
it as TEMPLEYARD.

Lv10-09b Priests:Dont drink wine when coming to TEMPLEYARD*2
Lv04-05a Slaughter..ENTRANCE TO TEMPLEYARD..blood to TEMPLE*3
Lv06-23a Invalidate SIN SACS whose blood is brought to TEMPLE*3
COMMENTS
*1 The phrase TEMPLEYARD or ALTAR clearly indicates that
even when coming to the TEMPLEYARD, in which the Altar
was situated

*2 The word TEMPLE by itself could mean in the HOLIES(actual
building of the TEMPLE). However the phrase
-------------------------------------
Before God, at Entrance of TempleYard
-------------------------------------
clearly has nuances of EVEN in the COURTYARD(by the
entrance).

Note that Lv10-09b does not use the phrase ENTRANCE TO TEMPLE
The Sifrah however argues as follows
------------------------------------------------------
We find the PRIEST CLOTHING OBLIGATION (Ex28-43c) applies
both to the TEMPLEYARD and TEMPLE BUILDING. It would
therefore stand to reason that the DRUNKEDNESS
PROHIBITION applies equally to the TEMPLEYARD and
TEMPLE BUILDING
------------------------------------------------------

*3 Note the contrast:
- Slaughter the ox by the ENTRANCE TO THE TEMPLEYARD
- bring the blood ---------------- TO THE TEMPLE
It would seem that in the BRING BLOOD VERSE, the
word TEMPLE means TEMPLE BUILDING. This is further
confirmed with what was done with the blood
-----------------------------------------------
- sprinkle the blood on the PAROCETH
-----------------------------------------------
Since the SPRINKLED BLOOD went on the PAROCETH
I infer that the blood was brought into the
Temple building proper.

Similarly for Lv06-23.
- If the Sin offering is slaughtered in the Courtyard
- then the phrase BLOOD BROUGHT INTO THE TEMPLE
- means TEMPLE proper

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Some background will be helpful.

-- The list reflects usage of metonomy--the naming
of parts by wholes and wholes by parts. Some well known
examples are
- day: 12 hour vs 24 hour
- honey: honey vs sweets
- bread: bread vs food
- man: man vs person

- Hence the word TEMPLE could either refer to the
- entire Temple(Courtyard, Holies, and Holy of HOlies)
- Temple building (Holy and Holy of Holies)

-- In each of the verse examples we will indicate
thru the footnotes whether the word TEMPLE should
be translated as
- TEMPLEYARD (Entire temple) or
- TEMPLE (Temple Building proper)

The same Hebrew word is used throughout:

SUCCINCT SUMMARY

One of Rashis five main goals is to illuminate the meaning
of verses thru cross-references. We call this the method
of OTHER VERSES / inferred meaning. This method in fact
corresponds to one of the Rabbi Ishmael Exegetical rules:
-------------------------------------------------------
-- any item (e.g. a word)
-- that belonged to a group (all verses with this word)
-- and left this group(more details given in one verse)
-- does not only shed light on itself
-- but sheds light on all other verses
-------------------------------------------------------

EXAMPLE --PERFECT
-----------------
Many Biblical verses speak about the requirement of a
sacrifice to become PERFECT. It is never spelled out
what PERFECT means. However in one Biblical verse (Lv22-21)
we are explicitly told
--------------------------------------------------------------
Sacrifice animals must be PERFECT and pleasing WITHOUT BLEMISH
--------------------------------------------------------------

We infer from this verse that the phrase PERFECT means
physically UNBLEMISHED.

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 5 main goals is to give the meaning of words
the same way the dictionary gives meaning. We call this the
Rashi RULE of WORD MEANINGS.

Rashi had a variety of vehicles to present meaning. A common
technique of explaining meaning is the skillful use of
IDIOMATIC USAGE--that is collections of words
which mean more than the individual words. We call this the
RASHI SUBRULE CLASS of NEW MEANINGS. It could also more
appropriately be called the rule of IDIOMS.

EXAMPLE Lv04-12c
----------------
The place where the ashes of sacrifices offered on the
altar were placed was called SPILL-ASH---this is an
idiom that uses the further technique of EXAGGERATION.
The ashes are picturesquely depicted as being SPILLED
in the SPILL ASH place.

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 5 main tasks is to explain meaning. Rashi had
10 vehicles to explain meaning. Rashi would sometimes show
the meaning of CONNECTIVE WORDS such as ALSO, IF, WHEN, ALL
etc. We call this this the Rashi method and submethod of
SPECIAL CONNECTIVE WORDS

Today we examine the meaning of the word ALL. ALL has
5 biblical usages. They are summarized in LIST005n below.
a) ALL = NO INDIVIDUAL EXCEPTIONS,
b) ALL = No CLASS EXCEPTIONS
c) ALL = EMPHASIS: EVEN borderline cases
d) ALL = ALL parts
e) ALL X= ALL members of Xs group (X is an example)

Today we examine usage (e). Lets clarify it with
an English example: Suppose I say
----------------------------------------------
When taking a person to a hospital ALL red-light
prohibitions are suspended
----------------------------------------------

We can interpret this sentence as follows
----------------------------------------------
When taking a person to a hospital ALL traffic
prohibitions are suspended
----------------------------------------------

In other words RED LIGHTS are simply a good
example of what is suspended (since going
thru a red light has a high likelihood of
causing an accident (more so than speeding).

We could summarize this with the following
translation
----------------------------------------------
When taking a person to a hospital ALL traffic
prohibitions-like red lights--are suspended
----------------------------------------------

An alternative approach to this usage of ALL
is to regard ALL as a word of emphasis indicating
generalization.

EXAMPLE Lv06-23b ALL
--------------------
Lv06-23b states
-----------------------------------------------
ALL sin offerings whose blood is brought into
the Temple proper become invalid and may not be eaten
------------------------------------------------

Rashi comments
----------------------------------
The word ALL includes other sacrifices (Whose blood
is brought into the TEMPLE proper) In other words
if ANY sacrifice has its blood brought into the
temple then it becomes invalid
----------------------------------

Thus Rashi translated Lv06-23b as follows:

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Invalidate all SACRIFICES (-like sin offerings) whose blood
is brought inside
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Here is the argument for using SIN OFFERINGS as an example
- Certain sin offerings are done INSIDE the temple (Lv16)
- Hence I might interpret the invalidation of outside-sin
offerings whose blood is brought INSIDE as a prohibition
based on a confusion of sin offerings(i.e. it makes
ordinary sin offerings look like inside-sin offerings)
- But if a certain offering type does not have INSIDE
OFFERINGS I would not have thought it invalidated if
its blood is brought inside (Because there is nothing
to confuse it with)
- Hence the word ALL includes in this invalidation even
non-sin offerings that do NOT have a counterpart--if
any offering is brought inside it is invalidated.

As noted several times in this email list
this usage of ALL has a MIDRASHIC
flavor since since the reader must have a knowledge of
other areas of Jewish law.

The reader who is not happy with the above translation
can use our alternative approach and regard ALL as
a word of EMPHASIS indicating GENERALIZATION.

LIST005n below presents many Rashis on the word ALL
which has 5 usages.

COMMENTS
*1 Rashi gives examples: "CRAWLING ON BELLY" could refer to
a SNAKE. "ALL WHO CRAWL ON BELLY" refers to SNAILS
Thus the ALL includes even insects

*2 Rashi gives examples: "WALKING ON CLAWS" refers to the
scoprion---"ALL WHO WALK ON CLAWS" refers to the BEETLES

*3 Rashi further FURTHER supports this with the alignment
(The Torah is speaking about a plague of BITING SNAKES
God told Moses to make a copper snake and those that look
at it would live) Consider the alignment of the following
verses

---------------------------------------------------------------
Nu21-08 And ANYONE Bitten will SEE it & live
Nu21-09 And ANYONE Bitten by a snake would STARE at it & live
*1 *2
---------------------------------------------------------------

Thus if a SNAKE bit them they had to STARE at it to live
But if a DOG bit them they could just see it and live

Finally, Rashi in the name of the Talmud explains why "looking"
at a copper snake should cure---it symbolically referred to
looking upwards and praying

*4 That is the adults should TRAIN minors not to eat blood

*5 This Rashi, besides being derived from the word ALL is further
supported by an alignment of introductory verses

---------------------------------------------
Lv15-01 speak to the Jews
Lv12-02 Speak to the Jews
Lv19-02 Speak to ALL the community of Jews
*a *b
---------------------------------------------

Thus there is an emphasis that the whole community should
hear (even children)

*6 Again Rashi is supported by an alignment

-----------------------------------------------------
Dt34-08 the children of Israel mourned Moses
Nu20-29 the whole house of Israel Mourned Aaron
*a *b
-----------------------------------------------------

The term HOUSE of ISRAEL is more
directed to women and children

*7 ALL people (even judges who heard testimony) must stone
the blasphemer

*8 ALL people cried at hearing the spies story (Even the
leaders)

*9 Thru the GENERAL PARTICULAR GENERAL principle we learn
that only dense-visible hair (like eyebrows) has to
be shaved. This is learned by generalizing the examples
in the verse ("head", "beard", "eyebrows")

Thru the word "ALL" we learn that even non-dense or
non-visible hair (like armpit hair or outer-arm-hair)
should be shaved.

Thus the two items--GENERAL-PARTICULAR-GENERAL and ALL
teach us that ALL is shaved except NOSE-HAIR

*10 Neither foreigners nor Jewish Apostates can bring offerings

*11 Thus eg God smote the Firstborn of Egyptians and also the
firstborn of other nations who were visiting Egypt

*12 This was incorrectly translated in a previous posting

*13 Rashi points out the subtlety in this: People normally act
macho--they would say "If I had been there to hear Moses I
would have answered him". Therefore it says ALL Israel..
Moses made sure "EVERYBODY" was there so that no one
should claim that "I would have answered Moses".

*14 This law is beneficial--if the sacrifice touched other
meat then ONLY THE PLACE WHERE IT TOUCHED has to be cut off
(Only PART of it is holy)

Rashi further learns that TOUCHING does not confer holiness
unless there was ABSORPTION of the meat flavor (According
to Malbim this is learned from order of words--this will
be discussed in another posting)

*15 So you spill the blood out of the cup--then you vigorously
shake it and spill the leftover droplets (hence ALL the blood
is spilt)

*16 So eg if the dead organ fell into the cup then anything
in the AIRSPACE of the cup becomes ritually impure EVEN
if it is not touching the cup but eg suspended

In legal terminology we say that (BEING) INSIDE is a
VEHICLE for TRANSMISSION of impurity in earthenware cups

*17 I would logically think that Bzalel couldn't do things that
God told Moses but Moses forgot to tell Bzalel.

Rashi brings a possible example--In Ex25 Moses orders the
temple utensils to be built first and then the Tabernacle

But in Ex36 and Ex37 Bzalel builds the Tabernacle first
and then the temple.

Logically Bzalel knew that you build the house first and
then fill it with utensils

*18 Nu14-29 states that the adult males over 20 who listened to
the spies slander of Israel died. However they had all
died by the time they came to Tzin---hence the WHOLE
community came (because they didn't bury anyone in the
previous place)

*19 Nu18-09 lists 3 types of sacrifices that priests get.
It does not list peace offerings. HEnce I need the word
ALL to include it. This is further indicated in Lv06
and Lv07-23.

*20 It says Lv17-11 that the reason blood is prohibited is
because it is used to atone on the altar

Hence it is logical to conclude that only sacrificial
blood is forbidden but ordinary blood that can't be
offered is permissable. Therefore the verse says ALL BLOOD
to include this other blood.

*21,*22 It explicitly says (Lv22--21:22) that blemished priests
may not offer sacrifices (But may eat them).

Hence the word "ALL" includes even blemished priests--
since they can't offer sacrifices I might think they
DO inherit Israel--I might also think that they do
not join the Priestly rotations (which offer and eat
the sacrifices).

Therefore the word ALL is used. They

do join the priestly rotations,
do not inherit Israeli land,
do not offer sacrifices
do eat them

*23 There are 3 opinions of what the word ALL includes.
The best literary approach is to use Lv07-07
The sin offering is like the guilt offering
(Since both sin and guilt offerings deal with matters
of sin) Thus the word "ALL sin offerings" includes
even guilt all offerings.

We used this Rashi to show Rashis literary style.
See above

*24 Recall that most sacrifices are HOLY and cannot be eaten
even if they are Kosher. Further recall that the Lepor
was atoned by having a Kosher bird sent away and another
one offered (Lv14-04:07). I might think that this
sent-away-Lepor bird is like any other sacrificial object
and prohibited from eating. Therefore Dt14-11 says
ALL Kosher birds... may be eaten--even the Kosher lepor
bird.

*25 The first passover offering has one lamb PER family(Ex12-03)
Hence I might think that future passover offerings are
PER family. Therefore when Ex12-16 says "The WHOLE community
must offer it" it means EVERY individual

*26 Added Dec 27, 2001. This verse discusses how Pharoh
decreed death on all children.

The Bible explicitly says that Egypt was run by
magicians and stargazers (Ex07-11, Ex08-15). It
therefore seems reasonable that they told Pharoh that
they were told my magic that a savior was born to the Jews
Since Pharoh didnt know if the savior was Egyptian or Jewish
Pharoh ordered ALL children -- EVEN Egyptian children --
killed by drowning.

*27 In this part of the list ALL means ALL SUBGROUPS

*28 In this part of the list ALL means EVEN BORDERLINE CASES
So eg THE WHOLE NATION REBELS includes EVEN THE LEADERS
(Since you wouldnt expect the leaders to rebel)

*29 In this part of the list ALL means WITHOUT EXCEPTION
(Everybody)

*30 In this part of the list ALL means ALL PARTS (eg
even ORGANS)

*31 In this part of the list ALL refers EVEN to items
you dont EXPECT (Hence this part of the list is
MIDRASHIC in flavor). For example BEZALEL did ALL
GOD COMMANDED MOSES...the word ALL refers EVEN to
items that Moses forgot (Since you wouldnt think
that Bezalel followed forgotten orders)

*32 (Rashi) The other BARREN women hearing about Sarah's birth
were happy because they gave birth also.

*33 The argument goes for using sin offering as an example
is as follows:
- Certain sin offeringts are done INSIDE the temple (Lv16)

- We could therefore retranslate this verse with the
emphasis on ALL as follows
-------------------------------------------------
And ALL -- (like a sin offering that has a counterpart
inside and we are worried about confusing the two)--ALL whose
blood is brought into the temple --they become invalid
-----------------------------------------------------
