SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 5 main goals is to indicate paragraph
structure. One method of paragraph structure is to
use the THEME-DETAIL-THEME style. According to the
THEME-DETAIL-THEME method, the DETAIL is perceived as
a DEVELOPMENT of the general paragraph theme and is
interpreted in that manner. We call this the Rashi
method of RABBI ISHMAEL STYLE with the Rashi submethod
of GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL

EXAMPLE Lv05-04b - Lv05-04d
---------------------------
The Biblical text at Lv05-04 has
the following content/structure
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
THEME: When a desiring soul swears explicitly
DETAIL: - - - - - - - - - - for harm or good
THEME: For anything that a person swears explicitly
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Rashi (paraphrased)
---------------------------------------------------
The detail
- - - - - - - - -
for HARM or GOOD
- - - - - - - - -
is interpreted as DEVELOPING the paragraph theme.

Hence we interpret
- HARM = harm oneself
- GOOD = give pleasure to oneself
and we generalize this to
- any oath on PERMISSABLE events

Hence we include in these laws
- oaths to harm or give pleasure to oneself
- oaths about the future/past (I will/did throw a stone)
and we only exclude non-personal oaths such as
- I will observe the Sabbath.
---------------------------------------------------

Rashi cites the Sifrah which in fact gives other
approaches of generalization. Suffice it therefore to
observe that the underlying principle is one of
generalizing the DETAIL clause to perceive it as a
DEVELOPMENT of the GENERAL THEME.

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 The Sifrah distinguishes two methods:

THE THEME-DEVELOPMENT-THEME Method
----------------------------------
According to the Sifrah the bottom line is that the
Biblical text refers to FUTURE PERMISSABLE events

THE GENERALIZATION-LIMITATION-GENERALIZATION method
---------------------------------------------------
According to the Sifrah the bottom line is that the
Biblical text refers to PERMISSABLE events.

This is an extremely subtle distinction and would require
many examples and much discussion to clarify. Hence at
this point in our Rashi digest we simply refer to the

- GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL method
- we regard the GENERAL clause as the PARAGRAPH THEME
- we regard the DETAIL clause as DEVELOPMENT

The basic idea of Rashi is to
- perceive the whole paragraph as one unit
- see the details as a development of the theme

We will have more to say about these two methods
in a later digest and we will give easy criteria
by which the interested student can distinguish the
two approaches.

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
A powerful but simple Rashi method is the CITATION or CROSS-
REFERENCING of an OTHER VERSE for the purpose of clarifying
a procedure. We call this the Rashi
METHOD of OTHER VERSES and the Rashi
submethod of CITATION.

EXAMPLE Lv05-10a BIRD GUILT OFFERING
------------------------------------
The Biblical text at Lv05-10a states
----------------------------------------
And the second bird he should offer as an
UP offering ACCORDING TO PROCEDURE
----------------------------------------

Rashi commenting on the phrase ACCORDING TO PROCEDURE explains
-----------------------------------------------------------
According to the procedure of offering the BIRD UP offering
explained in Lv01-14:17
-----------------------------------------------------------

Dt15-06a Blessed if observe law Dt28-03 You will be blessed*1
COMMENTS
*1 The preceding chapter and paragraphs speak about the
requirement to observe the law

*2 The actual verse Lv09-15 states
-------------------------------------------
Make the nation sin offering LIKE THE FIRST
-------------------------------------------

By referring to Lv09-08 we learn that the phrase
LIKE THE FIRST means LIKE THE FIRST SIN OFFERING --
THE ONE OFFERED FOR THE PRIEST (Since there were
2 sin offerings--one for the PRIEST and one for
the NATION)

*3 Here is a more complete story
------------------------------------------------------
- Dt05-12b states Observe Sabbath AS GOD COMMANDED YOU
- Ex16-23 states THIS IS WHAT GOD HAD SAID:Dont cook
on Sabbath
------------------------------------------------------
So both verses seem to be referring to something else

An investigation shows that Ex12, Ex16-23 and Ex15-25:26
are the only times that the Jews received commandments
prior to the decalogue. But Ex12 specifically refers to
Passover commandments. Thus it seems reasonable that
the cryptic reference AS GOD COMMANDED YOU in Dt05-12b
is CITING Ex15-25:26 where God gave GENERAL COMMANDMENTS
A similar argument would support the conjecture that
- Dt05-16a HONOR YOUR PARENTS AS GOD COMMANDED YOU
cites Ex15-25:26

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
A major Rashi method is the ALIGNMENT method. The
ALIGNMENT rule makes inferences from the alignment of
almost identical verses or phrases. When the inferences
are NUANCES that are implied by the minor differences
in the aligned verses we say that Rashi is using the
subrule of NUANCES.

EXAMPLE Lv05-08b BIRD UP vs BIRD GUILT offering
--------------------------------------------------
We compare the requirement to CUT THE HEAD at the
- BIRD UP offering
- BIRD GUILT offering
------------------------------------------------
Lv05-08: BIRD GUILT: Cut its head but dont divide
Lv01-15: BIRD UP: Cut its head --------------
------------------------------------------------

Rashi comments
-----------------------------------------------------------
From the absence of the crucial phrase BUT DONT DIVIDE in
the BIRD UP offering we infer that the head is COMPLETELY
cut off in the BIRD UP offering.

From the presence of the crucial phrase BUT DONT DIVIDE
in the BIRD GUILT offering we infer that the priest
cuts one of the two major pipes (wind pipe/food pipe)
in the BIRD GUILT offering
-----------------------------------------------------------
