SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashi's 10 major methods is the use of OTHER VERSES to clarify existing verses. Rashi can use OTHER VERSES to a) provide more details b) justify citations and cross references and c) to infer meaning. We call this the RASHI METHOD of OTHER VERSES and the RASHI SUBMETHODS of FURTHER DETAILS, CITATIONS, and INFERRED MEANING. EXAMPLE Nu30-06a ---------------- The Biblical text states --------------------------------------- If he RATTLES her vow on the day he hears it....then the vows need not be kept --------------------------------------- The meaning of the phrase RATTLES her vow is clarified by an OTHER VERSE Nu30-09 ------------------------------------- If her RATTLES her on the day he hears it and ANNULS HER VOW... ------------------------------------- Both from the context and the OTHER VERSE we infer that RATTLE HER means to ANNUL her vow so she need not keep it. EXAMPLE Nu30-16a ----------------- The Biblical text states ------------------------------------------ And if he annuls the vow after HE HEARS IT ------------------------------------------ The meaning of the phrase HE HEARS IT is clarified by an OTHER VERSE Nu30-08 ------------------------------------------------- and her husband HEARS...and is silent...then her vows are AFFIRMED [she must keep them] ------------------------------------------------- Thus we infer from the OTHER VERSE that the meaning of HEAR is HEAR & IS SILENT which is a method of AFFIRMATION.

*1 Ex13-20 Jews journeyed from Succoth after Exodus Ex12-27 Exodus: Jews go from Raamsayth to Succoth Nu33-05 Exodus, Then Raamsayth, THen Succoth The point is that Nu33-05 makes it clear that there were 3 places - Exodus FROM Egypt - TO Raamsayth - TO Succoth. Ex13-20 only mentions 2 of the places Ex12-27 makes it sound like they left EGYPT, ie they left RAAMSAYTH. It is in fact common for places to have multiple names. So Nu33-05 illumines that there were 3 distinct places *2 Also see Ex30-11:16 which prohibits DIRECTLY counting people. Instead, we must count the COINS of each person and from this infer the total count. *3 Nu17-05 further illumines by calling it a MEMORIAL Thus we have SYMBOL MEMORIAL BANNER. Since NAYS means BANNER it refers to anything that ATTRACTS attention such as SYMBOLS or MIRACLES *4 In this example the Hebrew word TaMid can mean either CONTINUAL or CONTINUOUS depending on context. *5 Rashi extends the meaning of GIFT TO THE DEAD to all BURIAL RELATED MATTERS such as provision of shrouds and the coffin *6 Rashi notes that Gn15-17 speaks about --------------------------------------------------- The FIRE PILLAR that TRANSITED thru the cut animals --------------------------------------------------- Since FIRE is symbolic of PROPHETIC ENCOUNTER we infer that GOD symbolically TRANSITED the cut animals to affirm the CONVENANT He made with Abraham
|
||||
*10 Rashi also on this verse cites 5-6 verses to show that the Hebrew root Nun-Vuv-Aleph means to RATTLE However the phrase RATTLE THE VOW still needs clarification which is done by comparing it to Nu30-09--RATTLE VOW and ANNUL it. Since the major part of the derivation is from the OTHER VERSE we omit this supplemental list of verses. |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 10 main goals is the explanation of meaning the same way a dictionary explains meaning. We call this the Rashi method of WORD MEANING. Rashi will sometimes explain meaning by providing a UNIFIED MEANING to a root. EXAMPLE: Nu31-10a ROW-PALACE-EXECUTIVE SUITE -------------------------------------------- I use a combined approach of RASHI and RADACK. - The fundamental idea of Tet Vuv Resh and Tet Yud Resh is ROW (Radack explicitly states this and cites alternate opinions) - So a ROW-HOUSE would as Radack describes be a house that - consists of ROWS OF SMOOTH STONES (instead of jagged log cabins) - Rashi elaborates on who uses such polished houses: - Palaces and Government offices for Judges, princes,governors LIST864b below summarizes this approach with sample verses

SUCCINCT SUMMARY: ----------------- One of Rashis 6 main goals is the explanation of words similar to the way a dictionary explains words. When Rashi explains words we say he is using the method of WORD MEANINGS Rashi had 10 vehicles by which to explain words. When Rashi uses the SYNONYM submethod Rashi is not explaining the meaning of words--indeed the meaning is already known-- rather Rashi is contrasting the nuances of a given word to other words with almost similar meanings. EXAMPLE: Words for booty ------------------------ SHALLAL ------- Here are some sample verses with the word SHALLAL ------------------------------------------------------ Dt20-14 speaks about EATING the SHALLAL of your enemy 2C20-25 speaks about BOOTYING(BZ) SHALLAL--wealth and precious utensils. ------------------------------------------------------ Clearly SHALLAL refers to ------------------------- Enjoyable Booty--that is booty you benefit from ------------------------- BAZ --- Here are some verses with BAZ --------------------------------------------------- Nu31-50:53 Army obtained gold trinkets...they bootied(BAZ) Jo08-02 The SHALLAL and ANIMALS are your BAZ(Booty) Dt03-07 We took as BAZ(Booty) SHALLAL and animals --------------------------------------------------- Clearly BAZ is a word referring to GENERAL BOOTY MALKOACH -------- MALKOACH is a rare word occuring less than 10 times in the entire Bible. In Nu31-26 it is used to describe SHEEP, CATTLE and HUMAN booty This is also true throughout chapter Nu31. Clearly ------------------------------- MALKOACH refers to LIVING BOOTY ------------------------------- SHVI-CAPTIVES -------------- In all languages ---------------------------------- CAPTIVES refer to HUMANs captured in war. ------------------------------------ Dt21-10:11 is the clearest example: ---------------------------------------------- When you go to war and see in the CAPTIVES an attractive woman. --------------------------------------------- Further comments on the Rashi texts are made in LIST955L below which summarizes these observations.

*10 I have used the DAVKA 3.0.6 electronic version of Rashi. The Rashi text of the Davka 3.0.6 states -------------------------------------- SHALLAL refers to trinkets and clothing -------------------------------------- However the verses cited shows that SHALLAL can refer more broadly to anything ENJOYABLE (From which you have benefit) Here we interpret Rashi broadly. *2 The Rashi text of the Davka 3.0.6 states ------------------------------ BAZ refers to MOVABLE objects ----------------------------- But the verses clearly show that BAZ generally refers to ANY Booty. There are no verse grounds to justify interpreting BAZ as referring to BOOTY. Clearly this Rashi comment was not in the original Rashi as the word BAZ does not even occur in Nu31-11 and therefore there can be no Rashi comment on the verse beginning with this word. We therefore believe this Rashi text to be an error. *3 Malkoach is a rare word occurring less than 10 times in the entire Bible. There are several occurrences in Nu31 where it clearly refers to LIVESTOCK and HUMAN booty (SHEEP, CATTLE and HUMANS). The first Rashi comment in the Davka 3.0.6 version states -------------------------------- MALKOACH refers to LIVING BOOTY -------------------------------- This is supported by the verses. The next Rashi comment -------------------------------------------------- When MALKOACH and SHVI are used in the same verse then MALKOACH refers to ANIMALS while SHVI(Captives) refers to HUMANS -------------------------------------------------- this comment--is unfounded and not supported by the texts (Recall that there are less than 10 verses with Malkoach and they simply dont support this idea) We therefore believe that someone emended Rashi with specious distinctions not in the original Rashi text. *4 In all languages SHVI, CAPTIVES, refers to HUMAN BOOTY. |
