SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Rashi frequently made inferences based on the Biblical STYLE. We call this Rashi Rule the RABBI ISHMAEL STYLE rule. A powerful style rule was the painting of a verse in a CLIMACTIC DEVELOPMENT manner. We call this the RASHI SUBRULE of CLIMAX EXAMPLE Lv26-14:15 ------------------- The Biblical text at Lv26-14:15 states --------------------------------------------------------------- If you do not listen to ME do not do ALL these commandments If you my statutes you despise If my justices you loathe in order not to do ANY MY commandments in order to annul my TREATY ---------------------------------------------------------------- The GENERAL IDEA is: You disobey me. The SPECIFIC development uses 5 motifs ---------------------------------------------------------------- - PERSONAL: Use of the word ME, MY - ORDER:VERB-OBJECT (dont do laws) vs OBJECT-VERB(justice loathe) - COMPREHENSIVENESS: Use of the word ALL, ANY - COMMANDMENT REFERENCE: TREATY vs COMMANDMENTS - GOAL EMPHASIS: IN ORDER ---------------------------------------------------------------- Based on the General principle of CLIMAX and the 5 motifs Rashi indicates a CLIMACTIC development ----------------------------------------------------- - NO LEARNING -- don't listen - NO DOING -- don't do - Redicule religious code -- MY STATUTES despise - Redicule judicial code -- MY JUSTICES loathe - Prevent others from doing--not to do ANY commandments - Break Divine Treaty -------to ANNUL my treaty ----------------------------------------------------- To fully understand this we emphasize the concept of CLIMAX. Rashi is not emphasizing that - LISTEN means LEARNING - DO means PERFORMANCE Rather Rashi is emphasizing - 1st) you don't learn - 2nd) you don't do That is Rashi took the sequence of actions that lead to total rejection of Judaism and in effect pegged them on the 6 verselets. True, there is tremendous support for each of Rashi's ideas in the words used - LISTEN does connote LEARNING - DO does connote PERFORMANCE - not to do ANY commandments connotes stopping all performance - ANNUL my treaty connotes leaving Judaism but these words should be seen as SUPPORTIVE to the general idea of CLIMAX. *1 We ASKED you to go but didnt HARASS you till you went *2 The point being that the city wasnt named for the symbolic use of SEVEN (SHIVAH) lambs to seal the treaty(BUt rather the SEVEN lambs symbolically affirm the OATH=SHEVA for which the city was named) *3 Gn27-27b refers to a BLESSED FRAGRANT FIELD while Lv23-40 refers to a TREE OF SPLENDOR.*10 *4 Reuven did not actually sleep with Bilhah. Rather his fathers favorite bedware was kept on Bilhah's bed since Bilhah, Rachels concubine, reminded him of her after Rachels death. Reuven felt that his father should be living with Leah, since Leah was a bonafide wife. Reuven felt it insulting that Jacob preferred a concubine vs a real wife. Hence he switched the bedware from Bilhahs bed to Leahs bed in order to talk his father out of his behavior For our translation of Gn49-04 see footnote *12 *5 Gn45-05 also supports this. *6 Rashis real point is to avoid confusion The phrase WORDS OF LAW usually refers to Gods words of law, the Torah. However in Ex18-19c and Ex18-16 it refers to the LAWSUITS of the people. *7 In LIST901i we have shown that the root Pay-Resh-Kuph means - UNLOAD (in active mode) - YANK OFF (in intense mode - SLIP OFF (in intensive mode) Since the verse is translated as ------------------------------------------ Aaron asked them to YANK the Jewelery off their wives ------------------------------------------ Rashi comes to the conclusion that Aaron was interested in a fight (YANK off wives) and was stalling for time. Rashi learns this from the word YANK. This OTHER VERSE motivates Rashi to reinterpret several verses as also indicating stalling tactics. More specifically Rashi explains the following as stalling tactics - Aaron built an altar---RASHI: To stall for time - Aaron said: A holiday TOMORROW--RASHI: To stall for time - Aaron said: A holiday to GOD--RASHI: He was hoping Moses would return and they would have a real holiday to God. *8 It was Malbim's genious to bring an extra OTHER VERSE - Ex09-31 shows BARLEY ripens first in EARLY SPRING - Ex34-22 shows WHEAT ripens in LATE Spring. Malbim/Rashi applies this distinction to Lv23 - Lv23-10 describes the FIRST BARLEY brought on Passover - Lv23-17 describes the FIRST WHEAT brought on Pentecost --------------------- LONGER FOOTNOTES --------------------- *10 Rashi uses the languages ------------------------------- this refers to an APPLE orchard ------------------------------- But apple orchards are not known for their fragrance. Rather the reference is probably to an -------------- ETHROG orchard -------------- which has a characteristic hypnotic fragrance. The Hebrew word for ETHROG is GOLDEN APPLE.(The beauty of fragrance of an ETHROG ORCHARD was mentioned by the Rav, Rabbi Soloveitchick). *11 Rashi citing the Talmud states ------------------------------------------------------- Jacob came whole - from LIMP - from Monetary gifts to Esauv(Jacob had all his money) - with all his learning ------------------------------------------------------- But there 3 items all emanate from Gn32-32 where we are told that Jacob fought with an angel and won. Since he won - he did not lose money - he did not lose his Jewishness *12 Gn49-04 is translated by us as ------------------------------------- you played with your fathers beds ------------------------------------- Note the PLURAL BEDS vs BED...this shows that two BEDS (not the one bed of BILHAH) was involved We translate the Hebrew root &LH (to go up) as &LL (To play with). - THere are no other cases where &LH means &LL - but interchanges of 1-2-Hey and 1-2-2 roots does frequently occur in the Bible - Finally the verse wouldnt make sense if &LH was translated as GO UP since the phrase ------------------------- Go Up on your fathers bed ------------------------- couldnt refer to intimacy since intimacy is always referred to as GOING DOWN instead of GOING UP. |

*1 Many people are familiar with the concept of the FORMULA PLUG IN. That is a problem is solved by a formula which you plug into. But some problems intrinsically cannot (initally) be solved by a formula. Instead you have to formulate the problem algebraically and solve;only then do you have the formula. In other words these problems are solved by the EQUATION vs the FORMULA Thus the statement that the eldest gets double suggests the following model. - Suppose the are B brothers - Suppose 1 of them is eldest - The Fathers total assets are T (Total) - Let A be the amount each brother inherits We have no formula for A - Then each of the B-1 brothers obtains A - The eldest obtains double, 2A. - Together this exhausts the Fathers estate, T Hence we have (B-1)A + 2A = (B+1)A = T This gives rise to the formula A = T / (B+1) An example is a father with 100,000 and 4 children - T=100,000 - B=4 - So each child take T/(B+1) = 100000/5 = 20,000 - Eldest takes 2*20000=40000 - Other 3 take 20000 - Total distribution =3*20000+40000=100000 See Rambam Inheritance Chapter 2 *2 e.g. The father is a non jew from outside Israel He marries a Canaanite women in Israel By law when Israel is conquered she must be killed But the son follows the father, is not considered Canaanite, need not be killed and can be used as a slave byus. |
