SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 5 main goals is to indicate paragraph structure. One method of paragraph structure is to use the THEME-DETAIL-THEME style. According to the THEME-DETAIL-THEME method, the DETAIL is perceived as a DEVELOPMENT of the general paragraph theme and is interpreted in that manner. We call this the Rashi method of RABBI ISHMAEL STYLE with the Rashi submethod of GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL. EXAMPLE Nu33-53a --------------------------- The Biblical text at Nu33-53 has the following content/structure ------------------------------------------------------ GENERAL: You will CONQUER the land DETAIL: --------------------------- and DWELL in it GENERAL: For I give you the land to CONQUER ------------------------------------------------------ Rashi comments ------------------------------------------------------ The GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL structure indicates - CONQUER - ------- DWELL - CONQUER This unit forms a single paragraph and idea: In other words: The purpose of the conquest is to enable DWELLING (We are not conquering the Canaanites eg because they are evil or because God designates us to punish them). This theme that JEWISH DWELLING requires elimination of the CANAANITES is consistent with the numerous Biblical passages (E.g. Ex34-11:17) that worn against making treaties and intermarrying. In other words if we didnt kill the Canaanites we would end up having affairs with their women, making treaties, and joining their civilization. ------------------------------------------------------ LIST460s belows summarizes this argument.

*1 So the purpose of the CONQUEST is to keep our identity We do not conquer because eg we are Gods agents sent to destroy sinners. This idea that if we don't conquer then - we will consort with their women - make treaties - tolerate/accept their religion is echoed in many places in the Bible, for example Ex34-11:17 |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY: ----------------- One of Rashis 10 major goals is to illustrate complex geometric designs or algebraic complications. This is called the Rashi method of SPREADSHEETS, since SPREADSHEETS are one method of clarifying a complex relationship. The SPREADSHEET method can refer to any illustration of a verse that clarifies it. EXAMPLE Nu33-49a ---------------- Verse Nu33-49a states --------------------- The Jews camped FROM Beth Yeshimoth TO Avayl Shitim -------------------- Rashi comments --------------------------------------------------- The distance from Beth Yeshimoth to Avayl Shittim encompasses 12 square mil. From this we infer that the Jewish camp encompassed 12 square mil --------------------------------------------------- LIST690a below summarizes other Rashis using Spreadsheet methods EXAMPLE Nu34-08a ---------------- Chapter Nu34 describes the Israel borders In describing borders 6 terms are used. In explaining these 6 terms we use clock notation For example: 9:15 represents a STRAIGHT border from clock position 3 to clock position 9. Similarly: 10:15 represents a CROOKED border starting from clock position 3, going to the clock center, and TURNING towards 10 Similarly: 3:00 represents a TERMINATING BORDER starting at clock position 3, going towards 9 but STOPPED (GOING OUT) at the center and GOING OUT (Changing direction) to 12 When dealing with the clock recall that 12 = North 6 = South 3 = East 9 = West Here are the 6 terms used by the Bible ----------------------------------------------------------- BORDER DEFINITION: TO BE: BORDER is FROM 3 to 9 (9:15) BORDER CONTINUATION: PASS: Border PASSES from 3 to 9 BORDER TERMINATION: GO OUT: Border GOES out from 3 to 12 BORDER TERMINATION: GOING-OUT: BOrder GOES OUT from 3 to 12 BORDER CROOKEDNESS: Border ROLLS out from 3 to 10 BORDER CROOKEDNESS: ETCH: Border ETCHES from 3 to 10 ----------------------------------------------------------- Two very important points must be made FIRST: The Biblical text uses other terms for borders such as DESIRE, DESCEND etc. We only discuss 6 today SECOND: There are very serious controversies between e.g. the CAFTOR VAFERACH and other commentaries on what the original Biblical borders were. We are NOT DECIDING between these commentators. Rather, we are pointing out that despite the confusion, there are some basic principles that all commentators agree with: the meaning of border-descriptor terms. We feel that pointing out this commonality among the commentators will make the controversies appear less arbitrary. LIST690m below summarizes these 6 terms and indicates,in the footnotes, Rashis, using these terms. LIST690a below presents many Rashis based on SPREADSHEETS.

*1 Many people are familiar with the concept of the FORMULA PLUG IN. That is a problem is solved by a formula which you plug into. But some problems intrinsically cannot (initally) be solved by a formula. Instead you have to formulate the problem algebraically and solve;only then do you have the formula. In other words these problems are solved by the EQUATION vs the FORMULA Thus the statement that the eldest gets double suggests the following model. - Suppose the are B brothers - Suppose 1 of them is eldest - The Fathers total assets are T (Total) - Let A be the amount each brother inherits We have no formula for A - Then each of the B-1 brothers obtains A - The eldest obtains double, 2A. - Together this exhausts the Fathers estate, T Hence we have (B-1)A + 2A = (B+1)A = T This gives rise to the formula A = T / (B+1) An example is a father with 100,000 and 4 children - T=100,000 - B=4 - So each child take T/(B+1) = 100000/5 = 20,000 - Eldest takes 2*20000=40000 - Other 3 take 20000 - Total distribution =3*20000+40000=100000 See Rambam Inheritance Chapter 2 *2 Rashi gives a clarifying example to the verse GOD FORGIVES HER -------------------------------------------------------------- - the women vowed to become a nazarite - the husband annuled her vow - but the husband did not tell her about the annulment - the women then violated her vow - - In such a case God forgives the women (despite her intending to commit a sin) because of the unknown annulment of her husband - - We conclude that sin is an attribute of ACTION,not INTENT -------------------------------------------------------------- |
