SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- A powerful but simple Rashi method is the CITATION or CROSS- REFERENCING of an OTHER VERSE for the purpose of adding FURTHER DETAILS to a verse we are studying. We call this the OTHER VERSE method. There are three submethods to the OTHER VERSE method. If the verse actually CITES or refers to an OTHER VERSE we call this the SUBMETHOD of CITATION. If the OTHER VERSE explains the meaning of some term in the first verse we call this the SUBMETHOD of MEANING. If the first verse does not cite an other verse and if no meaning is explained then we call this the SUBMETHOD of FURTHER DETAILS since the 2nd verse either confirms the first verse or typically adds FURTHER DETAILS to the first verse Today we bring a pair of verses which simultaneously sheds light on two items. EXAMPLE Dt03-24c Dt03-24d Dt03-24e ---------------------------------- Verse Dt03-24 ------------------------------ [Moses had been punished by God and denied entry into the land of Israel He now pleads that God change His mind] God: You have begun to show your servant - your GREATNESS - your MIGHTY HAND ------------------------------ Rashi illuminates the nuances of the terms: GREATNESS, MIGHTY, HAND by citing one OTHER VERSE - Nu14-17:18 ------------------------------------------- [God had threatened to destroy the Jewish people for their sin of the spies: Moses seeks mercy] And Now May you make GREAT the STRENGTH OF GOD as you have cited to me as follows: God is long suffering and abundant in Mercy ------------------------------------------- Rashi comments --------------------------------- We can infer the meaning of GREATNESS and MIGHT from the OTHER VERSE Nu14-17:18 GREATNESS refers to Gods capacity to forgive and overlook justly deserved punishment MIGHT refers to Gods STRENGTH: That is, God WITHOLDS His anger [The preceding two explanations come from the OTHER VERSE--Rashi now extrapolates the theme and applies it to the word HAND] GODS HAND refers to Gods capacity to OPEN HIS HANDS and RECIEVE repentants --------------------------------- LIST250h below summarizes these inference of meanings from OTHER VERSES.

List of 2 verses | showing GREAT,MIGHT mean MERCIFUL |
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-04 | |||
List of 2 verses showing GREAT,MIGHT mean MERCIFUL
TEXT OF Dt03-24 | TEXT OF Nu14-17:18 | IDEA OF TRANSLATION
God: | And now GOD | Entreaty for Mercy
you have shown me | |||
-Your GREATNESS | May you make GREAT*10 | GREAT=Forgive sinner
-Your HAND*1 | HAND=open to receive
-that is MIGHTY | your STRENGTH*2 | MIGHT=WITHOLD agner
as you have said | |||
God is LONG SUFFERI | NG | ||
|
|||
*1 The terms GREAT and MIGHT-STRENGTH are used in both verses while the term HAND is not. Rashi extrapolates the approach--MIGHT/GREAT = CAPACITY TO FORGIVE, and applies this approach, inferred from the common use of the two terms MIGHT/GREAT, to the term HAND: Rashi interprets HAND as OPEN HANDS TO RECEIVE REPENTANTS. *2 - The word GREAT is IDENTICALLY used in both verses - But MIGHT and STRENGTH are DIFFERENT words which mean the same thing(Synonyms)
|
|||
*10 Rashi states an alternative interpretation ----------------------------------------------- The SIMPLE meaning of the text is that God had shown MOSES his MIGHT in defeating various armies that had attacked Israel, a topic, mentioned in the last few chapters of Deuteronomy ----------------------------------------------- We interpret Rashi's phrase ---------------------------- SIMPLE MEANING OF THE TEXT ---------------------------- to refer to the natural dictionary meaning of the words used. However everyone agrees that the PREFERRED meaning of a verse is the MEANING BASED ON CONTEXT. Since the CONTEXT of the verse is one of SUPPLICATION it is PREFERABLE to interpret this verse based on similar verses of SUPPLICATION In other words the interpretation above is the TRUE MEANING of the text. By contrast the SIMPLE meaning of the text given above by Rashi is really the DICTIONARY meaning of the text taken out of CONTEXT The purpose of Rashi giving an ALTERNATIVE SIMPLE MEANING was not to suggest it as a possible ALTERNATIVE to the whole verse, but rather, Rashi's point is that it is the CONTEXT that justifies changing the NATURAL DICTIONARY meaning of the words to SIMILAR usages in CONTEXTS OF SUPPLICATION The above is an important approach to Rashi's with TWO MEANINGS. |

VERSE: Dt04-22a
RASHIS COVERED: Dt04-22a Dt06-13a Dt10-20a
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-04 | ||
SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Rashi frequently made inferences based on the Biblical STYLE. We call this Rashi Rule the RABBI ISHMAEL STYLE rule. A powerful style rule was the painting of a verse in a CLIMACTIC DEVELOPMENT manner. We call this the RASHI SUBRULE of CLIMAX EXAMPLE Dt04-22a ------------------- The Biblical text at Dt04-22 states -------------------------- For I Moses die here I do not go into Israel -------------------------- It seems anti-climactic to state - I die OUTSIDE Israel - and will not go in. Because of the requirement that verses be PERCEIVED as being in CLIMACTIC order Rashi reads these verses as follows --------------------------------------------------------------- For I Moses die here I die OUTSIDE Israel I do not go into Israel I wont even be buried in Israel --------------------------------------------------------------- LIST451a below summarizes this argument EXAMPLE Dt10-20a Dt06-13a ------------------------- Both these verses state as follows ---------------------------------- FEAR God SERVE Him CLING to HIM*1 SWEAR BY HIM ---------------------------------- The concept of SWEARING has numerous connotations: - it can connote anger (eg prostitutes swear when angry) - it can connote affirmations of seriousness Rashi's point base on the CLIMACTIC nature of the verse is that SWEARING is only takne seriously by those who - fear God (dont swear haphazardly) - serve and cling to him Such people are then known as PEOPLE WHO SWEAR BY GOD This inference is justified by the CLIMAX form of the verse LIST450z summarizes this climactic structure

FEAR God | Dont eg SWEAR to express anger
SERVE Him | Be known as God-fearing
CLING to HIM*1 | Associate with Godly people
*2 | SWEAR BY HIM | Oaths of God Fearing taken seriously
|
|||
*1 The phrase/requirement CLING TO HIM is - present in Dt10-20 - absent in Dt06-13 *2 The concept of SWEARING has numerous connotations: - it can connote anger (eg prostitutes swear when angry) - it can connote affirmations of seriousness Rashi's point is:SWEARING is only takne seriously by those who - fear God (dont swear haphazardly) - serve and cling to him Such people are then known as PEOPLE WHO SWEAR BY GOD This inference is justified by the CLIMAX form of the verse |
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-04 | ||
Climactic structure of Dt04-22a: Die here;not even get burial plot
TEXT OF VERSE | INTERPRETATION REFLECTING CLIMAX
For I Moses die here | I die OUTSIDE Israel
I do not go into Israel | I wont even be buried in Israel*1
|
||
*1 Generally application of CLIMAX requires 3 verselets. Although we only have two verselets here, nevertheless, as stated they are anti-climactic - I DIE outside of Israel - I will not go in Hence a CLIMAX interpretation is needed to remove the anti-climax. As usual, we point out: What drives Rashi to the interpretation is the REQUIREMENT of climax--since the verselets must read in a climactic fashion therefore we are justified in interpreting NOT GO INTO ISRAEL to mean NOT EVEN HAVE A BURIAL plot. |

VERSE: Dt04-17b
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-04 | ||
SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Rashi frequently makes powerful inferences from the alignment of ALMOST similar verses. The minor variations between these almost similar verses suggests nuances and differences or even meaning. We call this the Rashi rule of ALIGNMENT When Rashi infers MEANING from the ALIGNMENT of almost identical phrases we call this the Rashi SUBRULE of MEANING. EXAMPLE Dt04-17b ---------------- By aligning Dt04-17:18 and Ex20-13:14 we can infer the MEANING of the verse Aleph-Vav-Hey (AVH) ---------------------------------------------------------- Dt04-17:18 dont murder ...dont steal dont COVET dont AVH Ex20-13:14 dont murder ...dont steal dont COVET dont COVET ---------------------------------------------------------- Rashi concludes: AVH is similar in meaning to COVET. Clear, simple and to the point LIST343s below summarizes this argument

|
|||||
*1 The same *2 The same *3 The same *4 The alignment shows that AVH=COVET (Rashi Dt04-17b)*10
|
|||||
*10 Interestingly Rambam offers a distinction between AVH vs COVET -AVH means to DESIRE in ones heart -COVET means to PRESSURE someone into SELLING We of course do not have a controversy here but rather a difference in emphasis - Rambam as a LEGAL CODIFIER emphasizes the legal definitions - Rashi as a BIBLICAL COMMENTATOR emphasizes the methodology to show AVH has a similar meaning to COVET |
