SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 10 main methods is the GRAMMAR method where Rashi explains GRAMMAR the same way GRAMMAR books do. A major submethod of the GRAMMAR method is explain sentence order. Most sentences use a VERB-OBJECT-INDIRECT-OBJECT order. The following simple sentence illustrates this ----------------------------------------------------------- I brought the wine to the table SUBJECT VERB OBJECT INDIRECT OBJECT ----------------------------------------------------------- Deviation from this basic order indicates emphasis; you place a word earlier in the sentence to bring attention and focus on it in order to emphasize it. In such a case the sentence - retains its simple meaning - and ALSO indicates the emphasis indicated by the reordering of the words This is a peach of a Rashi since it illustrates a basic idea about exegetical vs. simple meaning. EXAMPLE Lv26-08a ---------------- The biblical phrase ---------------------------------- FROM AMONG YOU: 5 will pursue 100 ---------------------------------- vs ---------------------------------- 5 FROM AMONG YOU will pursue 100 ---------------------------------- emphasizes the FROM AMONG YOU. Hence Rashi comments ----------------------------------- Even 5 weaklings will pursue 100 ----------------------------------- EXAMPLE Lv26-17b Lv26-17j ------------------------- The biblical phrase --------------------------------- The haters IN YOU will rule --------------------------------- vs --------------------------- The haters will rule IN YOU --------------------------- emphasizes the IN YOU. Rashi comments --------------------------------------------- You will be ruled over by Jewish Anti-semites --------------------------------------------- EXAMPLE Dt32-04 --------------- The biblical phrase --------------------------------- Strong God, PERFECT are His ways -------------------------------- vs -------------------------------- Strong God: His ways are PERFECT -------------------------------- emphasizes PERFECT. Hence Rashi comments ---------------------------------------- Despite His strength (no one can stand up to him) God is always Just in His ways and does not abuse His Power. EXAMPLE Lv26-15a Lv26-15b -------------------------- The Biblical phrases ------------------------------ If my STATUTES are despised If my ORDINANCES are loathed ------------------------------ vs ---------------------------- If you despise my STATUTES If you loathe my ORDINANCES ---------------------------- emphasizes STATUTES and ORDINANCES Hence Rashi comments --------------------------------- If you despise STATUTORY religious law If you despise Jewish COURTS (which enforce ordinances) --------------------------------- ACKNOWLEDGEMENT --------------- The sentence order rule was powerfully advocated by the great modern commentator Malbim who skillfully used it in his commentary to defend many difficult midrashim. *1 Rashi on Lv26-17b emphasizes an important point ---------------------------------------------- The verse - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - FROM YOU: Haters rule - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - has TWO meanings, both of which are true. This verse has the simple meaning - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Haters rule in you (literally: OVER YOU) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The verse ADDITIONALLY has the emphasis connoted by the deviant grammatical order - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - IN-YOU-HATERS (i.e. Jewish anti-semites) rule in you (over you) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - This Rashi emphasizes how - simple meaning - exegetical meaning need not be either identical or conflicting. Rather the two can be complimentary. In this case - one meaning is the meaning of the sentence - the other meaning derives from the deviant order
*10 The words with deviant grammatical order are capped. For example Lv26-08a states ---------------------- FROM YOU: 5 pursue 100 ---------------------- Proper order requires --------------------- 5 FROM YOU pursue 100 --------------------- The deviant order places emphasis on the phrase FROM YOU Hence the Rashi cited in the POINT OF EMPHASIS column ------------------------------------------------------ Even 5 weaklings--that is ANY people FROM YOU--will be able to pursue 100 ------------------------------------------------------ |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 10 main goals is the explanation of meaning the same way a dictionary explains meaning. We call this the Rashi method of WORD MEANING. Rashi had 10 vehicles by which to explain words. Rashi frequently explains not, word meaning, but rather phrase meaning. That is each particular word in the phrase may have a known meaning but the collection of words together form a NEW IDIOMATIC MEANING. We call this the NEW MEANING or the IDIOM SUBMETHOD. EXAMPLE: PLACING THE FACE=Full Attention ----------------------------------------- The following 4 verses use the phrase -------------------- PLACE MY FACE IN YOU -------------------- Rashi interprets this as an idiom connoting -------------------- FULL ATTENTION -------------------- Lv26-17a If you rebel I will PLACE MY FACE to punish you Lv26-09a If you do good I will PLACE MY FACE to make you flourish Lv17-10b If you eat blood I will PLACE MY FACE to punish you Lv20-03a If you offer your children to idols I will PLACE MY FACE to punish you Rashi (Lv26-17h) emphasizes that PLACING FACE= FULL ATTENTION can be either - for good (PLACE FACE to make you flourish) - for bad (PLACE FACE to punish you) LIST854y below presents other examples of Biblical idioms.

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- A powerful but simple Rashi method is the CITATION or CROSS- REFERENCING of an OTHER VERSE for the purpose of adding FURTHER DETAILS to a verse we are studying. We call this the Rashi METHOD of OTHER VERSES and the Rashi submethod of FURTHER DETAILS Lv27-17g -------- Lv27-17 part of the Leviticus rebuke states -------------------------------------------- If you rebel against me then I will turn My Face on you you will get sick you will SEED YOUR SEED FOR NOUGHT your enemies will eat them -------------------------------------------- The phrase SEED YOUR SEED FOR NOUGHT is illuminated by the parallel verse in Dt28-57 ----------------------------------------------- the delicate women will ... on her infants for she will eat her children in hiding ----------------------------------------------- Both chapters deal with the rebuke of God. Both chapters speak about the death of children. One chapter speaks about MOTHERS eating their children while the other chapter speaks about ENEMIES their children. Dt27-12a | Blessings ON Mountain | Jo08-30:35 | ...FACING MOUNTAIN
*1 We ASKED you to go but didnt HARASS you till you went *2 The point being that the city wasnt named for the symbolic use of SEVEN (SHIVAH) lambs to seal the treaty(BUt rather the SEVEN lambs symbolically affirm the OATH=SHEVA for which the city was named) *3 Gn27-27b refers to a BLESSED FRAGRANT FIELD while Lv23-40 refers to a TREE OF SPLENDOR.*10 *4 Reuven did not actually sleep with Bilhah. Rather his fathers favorite bedware was kept on Bilhah's bed since Bilhah, Rachels concubine, reminded him of her after Rachels death. Reuven felt that his father should be living with Leah, since Leah was a bonafide wife. Reuven felt it insulting that Jacob preferred a concubine vs a real wife. Hence he switched the bedware from Bilhahs bed to Leahs bed in order to talk his father out of his behavior For our translation of Gn49-04 see footnote *12 *5 Gn45-05 also supports this. *6 Rashis real point is to avoid confusion The phrase WORDS OF LAW usually refers to Gods words of law, the Torah. However in Ex18-19c and Ex18-16 it refers to the LAWSUITS of the people. *7 In LIST901i we have shown that the root Pay-Resh-Kuph means - UNLOAD (in active mode) - YANK OFF (in intense mode - SLIP OFF (in intensive mode) Since the verse is translated as ------------------------------------------ Aaron asked them to YANK the Jewelery off their wives ------------------------------------------ Rashi comes to the conclusion that Aaron was interested in a fight (YANK off wives) and was stalling for time. Rashi learns this from the word YANK. This OTHER VERSE motivates Rashi to reinterpret several verses as also indicating stalling tactics. More specifically Rashi explains the following as stalling tactics - Aaron built an altar---RASHI: To stall for time - Aaron said: A holiday TOMORROW--RASHI: To stall for time - Aaron said: A holiday to GOD--RASHI: He was hoping Moses would return and they would have a real holiday to God. *8 It was Malbim's genious to bring an extra OTHER VERSE - Ex09-31 shows BARLEY ripens first in EARLY SPRING - Ex34-22 shows WHEAT ripens in LATE Spring. Malbim/Rashi applies this distinction to Lv23 - Lv23-10 describes the FIRST BARLEY brought on Passover - Lv23-17 describes the FIRST WHEAT brought on Pentecost --------------------- LONGER FOOTNOTES --------------------- *10 Rashi uses the languages ------------------------------- this refers to an APPLE orchard ------------------------------- But apple orchards are not known for their fragrance. Rather the reference is probably to an -------------- ETHROG orchard -------------- which has a characteristic hypnotic fragrance. The Hebrew word for ETHROG is GOLDEN APPLE.(The beauty of fragrance of an ETHROG ORCHARD was mentioned by the Rav, Rabbi Soloveitchick). *11 Rashi citing the Talmud states ------------------------------------------------------- Jacob came whole - from LIMP - from Monetary gifts to Esauv(Jacob had all his money) - with all his learning ------------------------------------------------------- But there 3 items all emanate from Gn32-32 where we are told that Jacob fought with an angel and won. Since he won - he did not lose money - he did not lose his Jewishness *12 Gn49-04 is translated by us as ------------------------------------- you played with your fathers beds ------------------------------------- Note the PLURAL BEDS vs BED...this shows that two BEDS (not the one bed of BILHAH) was involved We translate the Hebrew root &LH (to go up) as &LL (To play with). - THere are no other cases where &LH means &LL - but interchanges of 1-2-Hey and 1-2-2 roots does frequently occur in the Bible - Finally the verse wouldnt make sense if &LH was translated as GO UP since the phrase ------------------------- Go Up on your fathers bed ------------------------- couldnt refer to intimacy since intimacy is always referred to as GOING DOWN instead of GOING UP. *13 Rashi gives several interpretations of the phrase ------------------------- seed your seed for nought ------------------------- The approach in this email group is to consider the terminal explanation to be the true explanation Note that this terminal explanation, parents losing children is consistent with the context of the verse which speaks about death of people |
