SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 10 main goals is the explanation of word
meaning similar to the function of a dictionary. We call
this the Rashi rule of WORD MEANING.

Rashi had 10 vehicles by which to explain word meaning.
Sometimes Rashi would employ techniques of meaning common
to all languages. All languages employ METONOMY.

METONOMY refers to RELATED meaning. For example the
statement AMERICA DEFEATED IRAQ really means THE AMERICAN
PEOPLE DEFEATED THE IRAQI PEOPLE. Here the LAND, America
or Iraq, refers to a RELATED ITEM, the PEOPLE OF THE
LAND, the AMERICANS or the IRAQUIS. This is called
METONOMY.

Today we examine PHRASE METONOMY: We use a phrase to
describe a possible example of an attribute; the
verse is not really interested in what is being
described but rather is interested in the attribute.
This is a very common technique in poetry (not saying
what you mean but indicating a lurid related example
that EVOKES an image of the attribute). The examples
below clarify

EXAMPLE Gn49-11c
----------------
The BIBLICAL PARAGRAPH is speaking about BLESSING.
It wishes to indicate that WINE IS IN ABUNDANCE.
So the verse says
-----------------------------------
clothes are washed in wine
-----------------------------------

Here BLESSING is METONOMICALLY indicated by
the related (possible) symptom of washing clothes
in wine.

Note: The verse doesn't really intend that anyone
will ever wash their clothes in wine. Rather the
verse is using METONOMY to EVOKE the image of
wine abundance.

EXAMPLE Lv26-26c
----------------
The BIBLICAL PARAGRAPH is speaking about a CURSE.
It wishes to indicate there is a WOOD DROUGHT.
So the verse indicates a related symptom
--------------------------------
10 women cook in one stove
--------------------------------

Here CURSE is METONOMICALLY indicated by
the related possible symptom of 10 women
sharing one stove (from lack of wood)

Note: The verse doesn't really intend that
exactly 10 women will share one stove. Rather
the verse is using METONOMY to EVOKE the image
of WOOD DROUGHT.

EXAMPLE Lv26-10a
----------------
The BIBLICAL PARAGRAPH is speaking about BLESSING.
It wishes to indicate that grain is WELL PRESERVED.
So the verse says
-----------------------------
People consume very old grain
-----------------------------

Here BLESSING is METONOMICALLY indicated by the
related symptom of CONSUMPTION OF VERY OLD GRAIN

EXAMPLE Lv26-10b
----------------
The BIBLICAL PARAGRAPH is speaking about BLESSING.
It wishes to indicate that there is an abundance of GRAIN
So the verse says YOU WILL REMOVE OLD GRAIN FROM
THE GRANARY [TO MAKE ROOM FOR THE NEW--because you
have no place else to store it].

Here the concept of BLESSING is indicated by the
related symptom of REMOVING OLD GRAIN from the
granary.

EXAMPLE Gn49-12b
----------------
The BIBLICAL PARAGRAPH is speaking about BLESSING.
It wishes to indicate that MILK is in abundance
So the verse indicates a related symptom
---------------------
white teeth from milk
---------------------

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
A powerful but simple Rashi method is the CITATION or CROSS-
REFERENCING of an OTHER VERSE for the purpose of adding
FURTHER DETAILS to a verse we are studying. We call this
the Rashi METHOD of OTHER VERSES and the Rashi submethod
of FURTHER DETAILS

EXAMPLE Nu02-02c
----------------
Nu02-02 states
-----------------------------------
Each Jew shall camp on his flag
The shall camp
OPPOSITE and surrounding the Temple
------------------------------------

Rashi clarifies the phrase OPPOSITE
using an OTHER VERSE, Jo03-04
-----------------------------------
There will be a DISTANCE between
you[the Jews] and it[The ark]
ABOUT 2000 CUBITS
-----------------------------------

Hence Rashi clarifies that OPPOSITE in
Nu02-02c means a 2000 cubit distance.

EXAMPLE Nu01-51b
----------------
Nu01-50:51 states
-----------------------------------------
Now appoint the Levites on the Temple
...they will bear the Temple...
when the Temple moves the Levites
will dis-assemble it, and when the
Temple camps, the Levites will erect it,
AND THE STRANGER THAT COMES NEAR WILL DIE
-----------------------------------------

The phrase
----------------------------------------
AND THE STRANGER THAT COMES NEAR WILL DIE
----------------------------------------

is clarified by Nu18-01:08
----------------------------------------
The Levites ....will serve you....
The Levites will watch your watch
and the watch of the Temple:Nevertheless
they will not come near to the altar
and temple vessels and THEY WILL NOT
DIE, THEY AND YOU

and they will work with you and watch
the watch of the Temple in all Temple
service and a STRANGER WILL NOT COME NEAR

And you [the Priests] will watch the
watch of the Temple and the watch of
the Altar and there will not be more
anger on the Jews

...the Levites are given as a gift
to you...to serve the Temple

...but you[The priests] shall watch
your Priesthood on all altar matters
and behind the veal and serve...AND
THE STRANGER WHO COMES NEAR SHALL DIE
---------------------------------------

Nu18-01:08 clarifies
- a prohibition and death penalty
for Levites doing Priestly altar work

- a prohibition and death penalty
for Strangers[Israelites] doing Priestly work

- a prohibition but no death penalty
for Strangers[Israelites] doing Levite work

Rashi therefore clarifies the phrase
A STRANGER THAT COMES NEAR SHALL DIE
in Nu01-51 as referring to Israelites
doing Levite work[More broadly it refers
to any Stranger--Levite or Israelite--
doing any work they are not responsible
for [Israelites doing Levite work or
Priest work and Levites doing Priest work]

EXAMPLE Nu01-02b
----------------
Nu01-02 says that
----------------------------------
Jews camped by their SYMBOLIC FLAG
----------------------------------

Rashi clarifies the term SYMBOLIC FLAG
by a cross reference to an OTHER VERSE
---------------------------------------
Gn50-13 And Jacobs children did to him;
INDEED, as He had commanded them
---------------------------------------

In posting
--------------------------------------
http://www.Rashiyomi.com/gn50-13a.htm
--------------------------------------
we have explained the emphasis indicated
by the word INDEED. There we have shown
that
- the ORDER OF JACOBS sons in his
blessings and
- the ORDER OF JACOBS sons in
their encampment are almost identical
From this identicality we inferred that
Jacob ordered the order--children who
got along with each other camped together
while children who did not get along together
camped separately.

Rashi therefore clarifies Nu01-02 by
the OTHER VERSE Gn50-13--the Jews
camped according to the SYMBOLIC
configuration their Father ordered them.

Rashi further elaborates that SYMBOL
also refers to the TRIBES SYMBOLS
of the 12 stones in the Priest
breastplate, Ex28-17:20. Each TRIBE
FLAG had the SAME SYMBOLIC COLOR
that their STONE ON THE PRIEST
BREASTPLATE had.

Gn33-18a Jacob came WHOLE to city Gn32-32 Jacob LIMPED*11
Dt27-12a Blessings ON Mountain Jo08-30:35 ...FACING MOUNTAIN
COMMENTS
*1 We ASKED you to go but didnt HARASS you till you went

*2 The point being that the city wasnt named for the symbolic
use of SEVEN (SHIVAH) lambs to seal the treaty(BUt rather
the SEVEN lambs symbolically affirm the OATH=SHEVA for
which the city was named)

*3 Gn27-27b refers to a BLESSED FRAGRANT FIELD while Lv23-40
refers to a TREE OF SPLENDOR.*10

*4
Reuven did not actually sleep with
Bilhah. Rather his fathers favorite
bedware was kept on Bilhah's bed since
Bilhah, Rachels concubine, reminded him
of her after Rachels death. Reuven felt
that his father should be living with
Leah, since Leah was a bonafide wife.
Reuven felt it insulting that Jacob
preferred a concubine vs a real wife.
Hence he switched the bedware from
Bilhahs bed to Leahs bed in order
to talk his father out of his behavior

For our translation of Gn49-04 see footnote *12

*5 Gn45-05 also supports this.

*6 Rashis real point is to avoid confusion
The phrase WORDS OF LAW usually refers to Gods words
of law, the Torah.

However in Ex18-19c and Ex18-16 it refers to the
LAWSUITS of the people.

*7 In LIST901i we have shown that the root Pay-Resh-Kuph means
- UNLOAD (in active mode)
- YANK OFF (in intense mode
- SLIP OFF (in intensive mode)
Since the verse is translated as
------------------------------------------
Aaron asked them to YANK the Jewelery off their wives
------------------------------------------

Rashi comes to the conclusion that Aaron was interested
in a fight (YANK off wives) and was stalling for time.
Rashi learns this from the word YANK. This OTHER VERSE
motivates Rashi to reinterpret several verses as also
indicating stalling tactics. More specifically Rashi
explains the following as stalling tactics
- Aaron built an altar---RASHI: To stall for time
- Aaron said: A holiday TOMORROW--RASHI: To stall for time
- Aaron said: A holiday to GOD--RASHI: He was hoping Moses
would return and they would have a real holiday to God.

*8 It was Malbim's genious to bring an extra OTHER VERSE
- Ex09-31 shows BARLEY ripens first in EARLY SPRING
- Ex34-22 shows WHEAT ripens in LATE Spring.
Malbim/Rashi applies this distinction to Lv23
- Lv23-10 describes the FIRST BARLEY brought on Passover
- Lv23-17 describes the FIRST WHEAT brought on Pentecost

--------------------- LONGER FOOTNOTES ---------------------

*10 Rashi uses the languages
-------------------------------
this refers to an APPLE orchard
-------------------------------

But apple orchards are not known for their fragrance.
Rather the reference is probably to an
--------------
ETHROG orchard
--------------
which has a characteristic hypnotic fragrance. The
Hebrew word for ETHROG is GOLDEN APPLE.(The beauty
of fragrance of an ETHROG ORCHARD was mentioned by
the Rav, Rabbi Soloveitchick).

*11 Rashi citing the Talmud states
-------------------------------------------------------
Jacob came whole
- from LIMP
- from Monetary gifts to Esauv(Jacob had all his money)
- with all his learning
-------------------------------------------------------

But there 3 items all emanate from Gn32-32 where we
are told that Jacob fought with an angel and won.

Since he won
- he did not lose money
- he did not lose his Jewishness

*12 Gn49-04 is translated by us as
-------------------------------------
you played with your fathers beds
-------------------------------------

Note the PLURAL BEDS vs BED...this shows that
two BEDS (not the one bed of BILHAH) was involved

We translate the Hebrew root &LH (to go up) as
&LL (To play with).

- THere are no other cases where &LH means &LL
- but interchanges of 1-2-Hey and 1-2-2 roots
does frequently occur in the Bible
- Finally the verse wouldnt make sense if &LH
was translated as GO UP since the phrase
-------------------------
Go Up on your fathers bed
-------------------------
couldnt refer to intimacy since intimacy
is always referred to as GOING DOWN instead
of GOING UP.

*13 Rashi gives several interpretations of the phrase
-------------------------
seed your seed for nought
-------------------------
The approach in this email group is to consider
the terminal explanation to be the true explanation
Note that this terminal explanation, parents losing
children is consistent with the context of the
verse which speaks about death of people

*14 See http://www.Rashiyomi.com/gn50-13a.htm for full
explanation.

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
The BULLET method refers both to
- use of PARAGRAPH structure to indicate content
- use of BOLD, ITALICS, UNDERLINE etc to indicate meaning

The BULLET method seeks Biblical analogies equivalant to
the modern methods of BOLD, ITALICS, UNDERLINE....

There are several instances where Biblical words are
DOTTED on top. Rashi, following the Talmud, perceives
this DOTTING as EQUIVALANT to the modern method of
STRIKEOUT. A STRIKEOUT indicates
- an idea which had some validity
- but parts of it are invalid/missing(hence the STRIKEOUT)

EXAMPLE 1 -- Gn33-03
---------------------
So when the verse Gn33-03 says
-------------------------------------
ESAUV HUGGED AND ---KISSED--- JACOB;
-------------------------------------
with the word ---KISSED--- dotted, Rashi states

-----------------------------------------------
It is known that Esauv hated Jacob. But at that
moment Esauv forgot himself and KISSED Jacob.
Thus the KISS was PHYSICALLY there but not
EMOTIONALLY there.
-----------------------------------------------

Note how Rashi interprets the DOTTING as indicating
STRIKEOUT, SOMETHING MISSING.

EXAMPLE 2 -- Nu03-39
---------------------
BIBLE TEXT:
Moses and --AARON-- counted the Levites

RASHI:
AARON is DOTTED/STRIKEOUTED indicating something
missing--he wasnt counted among the Levites

EXAMPLE 3 -- Dt29-28a
---------------------
BIBLE TEXT:
Private sins are punished by God; but public sins
(even if committed by individuals) result in punishment
of the Jews and their --CHILDREN--

RASHI:
The word CHILDREN is DOTTED/STRIKEOUTED indicating
something missing. In fact the punishment of the community
for the public sins of individuals did not take place till
the Jews reaccepted the convenant in the times of Joshua.

EXAMPLE 4 - Gn37-12a
--------------------
BIBLE TEXT:
The brothers travelled to shepard
[eth] their father-s sheep in Schem

[The Hebrew connective word ETH introducing the phrase
---[eth] their father-s sheep in Schem--is dotted]

RASHI:
Their real goal was not to do their job(sheparding)
but to have a good time for themselves. Hence the word
ETH is DOTTED indicating something missing--they did
go to shepard the SHEEP but true intent was missing since
they went for themselves.

EXAMPLE 5 - Nu09-10a
--------------------
BIBLE TEXT:
A person who is FAR AWAY will make Passover in month 2

RASHI:
The word FAR AWAY is dotted---he doesnt have to be
ABSOLUTELY far away; but rather as long as he couldnt get
to the Temple court for the slaughtering--as long as he couldnt
get there in time, he observes the 2nd Passover. [Here the
dots indicate a STRIKEOUT, something missing--he doesn't have
to be ABSOLUTELY FAR away---as long as he couldn-t get their
in time]

In all these cases the STRIKEOUT indicates that the meaning
of the STRICKEN word or the clause it introduces is STRICKEN
(missing something) in its meaning

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT [Typo Error]

List of words with DOTS ON TOP=STRIKEOUT=something missing*10
VERSE Text of verse(Dotted word is CAPPED) What is missing
Gn33-03a Esauv hugged Jacob and KISSED him No real love*11
Nu03-39a Moses & AARON censussed the Levites Aaron not counted*1
Dt29-28a We/CHILDREN punished for open sins After entry to Land*2
Gn37-12a brothers went to shepard the SHEEP Went for themselves*3
Nu09-10a a FAR AWAY person observes Pesach 2 Couldnt get to Tmpl*4
COMMENTS
*1 That is even though Aaron was a Priest and hence from the
tribe of Levi he wasnt counted among the Levites (indicating
his special status) (So AARON was MISSING from the census
and hence the word is DOTTED)

*2 Joshua renewed the convenant by assembling the Jews--
publicly blessing those who followed the convenant and
publicly cursing those who violated it. Only after this
convenant renewal was the Jewish community punished as
a whole for the publicly committed sins of individuals

Again the DOTTEDNESS indicates something missing--the
rule given is not effective immediately but only after
a while.

*3 So their SHEPARDING OF THE SHEEP is missing something --
intent; their real purpose was to go for themselves to
have a good time

*4 So the FAR AWAY is missing something...it doesnt have
to be ACTUALLY FAR AWAY but only as long as he couldnt
get to the Temple court in time for the slaughtering

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 The BULLET method refers both to
- use of PARAGRAPH structure to indicate content
- use of BOLD, ITALICS, UNDERLINE etc to indicate meaning

The BULLET method seeks Biblical analogies equivalant to
the modern methods of BOLD, ITALICS, UNDERLINE....

There are several instances where Biblical words are
DOTTED on top. Rashi, following the Talmud, perceives
this DOTTING as EQUIVALANT to the modern method of
a LEFTOVER STRIKEOUT. A LEFTOVER STRIKEOUT indicates
- an idea which had some validity
- but parts of it are invalid/missing(hence the STRIKEOUT)

(Continued in *11)

*11 So when the verse says ESAUV HUGGEST AND ---KISSED--- JACOB;

-----------------------------------------------
It is known that Esauv hated Jacob. But at that

Note how Rashi interprets the DOTTING as indicating
LEFTOVER STRIKEOUT and SOMETHING MISSING.

Furthermore note how this example illustrates that
what appears to be homiletic and Midrashic is in
reality pure peshat--simple meaning. For to assert
that DOTS/STRIKEOUT means that SOMETHING is missing
is a SIMPLE MEANING of the text similar what is done
in modern literature.

In passing: Rashi had several competing opinions to
select from--he chose that interprettion which was most
consistent with the idea of DOTTING meaning MISSING SOMETHING

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
Rashi frequently makes powerful inferences from the alignment
of ALMOST similar verses. The minor variations between these
almost similar verses suggests nuances and differences or
even meaning. We call this the Rashi rule of ALIGNMENT

When Rashi identifies two cases from the ALIGNMENT we call
this the Rashi subrule of TWO CASES

When Rashi infers nuances from the variations betweent the
almost similar verses we call this the Rashi subrule of
NUANCES.

When Rashi infers MEANING from the ALIGNMENT of almost
identical phrases we call this the Rashi SUBRULE of MEANING.

EXAMPLE Nu03-45a
------------------
This is an unusual alignment in that we deal with
- a paragraph, Nu03-45:51
- the opening sentence gives an OVERVIEW
- the overview mentions how LEVITES replace FIRSTBORN
- in BOTH people and animals
-
- the rest of the paragraph gives numerical DETAILS
- Only details of the PEOPLE replacement are given
- details of the animal replacement are not given

Hence the Rashi:
-----------------------------------------------------------
- We are given numerical details of the LEVITE replacement
of the firstborn (22000 Levites vs 22273 1st born). The
Bible discusses dealing with the 273 extra 1st-born who
could not be replaced by Levites.

- We are not given numerical details of the ANIMAL
replacement.

We infer that the numbers involved were not close (like
the 22273 vs 22000) and therefore there was no auxilliary
procedure and no mention of numbers.
