SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 10 major goals is to explain grammar the same way modern textbooks explain grammar. One goal of grammar is to clarify the meanings and usage of SPECIAL WORDS. We call this the Rashi METHOD/SUBMETHOD of GRAMMAR / SPECIAL CONNECTIVE WORDS(ON,TO,FOR,...) EXAMPLE Nu04-26a ON can mean FOR -------------------------------- Nu04-26 states --------------------------------------- [They are appointed] on...the yard-door cover ON (AYIN LAMED) the Tabernacle and Altar --------------------------------------- Rashi comments ------------------------------------------------------------- ON (AYIN LAMED) can mean FOR. Hence the verse is translated - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - [They are appointed] on...the yard-door cover FOR (AYIN LAMED) the Tabernacle and Altar - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ------------------------------------------------------------- LIST004b below presents other verses where AYIN LAMED means FOR EXAMPLE Nu04-22a ALSO can refer to SIMILAR RELATIONSHIPS -------------------------------------------------------- Nu04-2:3 Nu04-22:23 Nu04-29:30 state -------------------------------------------- Raise the KEHATHITES, from 30-50, all those who come to serve God, count them ... Raise the GERSHONITES ALSO, from 30-50, all those who come to serve God, count them... --------- Count the MERRARITES from 30-50, those who come to Serve God --------------------------------------------- Notice the word ALSO by the GERSHONITES. Also notice the absence of the word RAISE by the MERRARITES. Rashi comments --------------------------------------------- The word ALSO indicates that the census for all three families was to be identical (That is ALSO indicates SIMILAR RELATIONSHIPS) --------------------------------------------- LIST005k brings verses with all 3 uses of ALSO (a)extra object, (b) derived object and (c) similar relationship)

*1 Here is the way to use this list. We use the first row Verse Column ------------ First we look up the verse Ex19-22a AND ALSO THE PRIESTS WILL SEPARATE. Text Column ----------- We see the text---- PRIESTS separate. Also Column ----------- This column indicates that ALSO includes the FIRSTBORN (who functioned as priests). So the verse is read as follows -------------------------------------------- God told Moses: The Priests ALSO (besides the firstborn) will separate -------------------------------------------- In other words the word ALSO is interpreted to include the FIRSTBORN besides the PRIEST. The FIRSTBORN are EXTRA to the priest. To make this easier to see I have CAPPED both FIRSTBORN and PRIESTS. *2 So here without the word ALSO I would say that God punishes nations which subjugate us. With the word ALSO I say that God both punishes the nation AND with 10 plagues AND with letting the Jews out with wealth. *3 God criticized Moses for wanting an IMMEDIATE fulfillment of the prophecy that the Jews will be redeemed. God said I ALSO gave prophecies to the Patriarchs (And they did not demand immediate fulfillment) *4 7:2--7 Kosher animals vs 2 non-kosher animals-- is only mentioned by the ANIMALS. The word ALSO implies the 7:2 ratio was preserved by the birds ALSO. *5 Just as when Sarah couldn't have children she gave her husband(Abraham) her maid (Hagar) so too when Rachel could have children she gave her husband her maid *6 Laban had tricked Jacob into marrying Leah vs. Rachel. *7 Jacob had tricked Isaac into blessing him. Isaac says he is ALSO blessed. In other words, EVEN if he hadnt tricked me he would still be blessed. *8 The Non-jews complained about the lack of food in the desert. The verse continues THEY RETURNED AND COMPLAINED, ALSO THE JEWS. The word ALSO connotes that the Jews complained with the same cynicism as the non-jews. *9 Gn21-27 confirms this since it states ------------------------------------------------ Who would have expected Sarah to NURSE CHILDREN ------------------------------------------------ The plural CHILDREN connotes that Sarah nursed the children of several women at the birthday party.
*10 The three methods are - ALSO connotes an EXTRA extraneous object - ALSO connotes a DERIVED object - ALSO connotes a SIMILAR RELATIONSHIP or method See http://www.Rashiyomi.com/dt23-19c.htm for a previous presentation of this list *11 The argument is that if - Esauv tries to Kill Jacob - Jacob will defend himself and kill Esauv first - But then Esauv-s followers will kill Jacob - And Jacobs followers will kill Esauvs followers - and the two groups of followers will fight Rashi cites an obscure Talmudic passage from Sotah that both Jacob and Esauv died on the same day---but this Homily is clearly allegorical--furthermore the Talmud refutes this and claims that they were buried on the same day (But died on different days) *12 Rashis point is as follows - Nu04-02:03 (Census KEHATHITES) - Nu04-22:23 (Census GERSHONITES) - Nu04-29:30 (Census MERRARITES) All three verse pairs require census but their language differs slightly. Hence the word ALSO indicates that the three tribes are all COUNTED the same way. |

Ex25-37b | illuminate TOWARDS the SIDE OF HER FACE
Ex09-22a | Waive your hand TOWARDS heaven*3
*1 Cf Gn18-08 Abraham was standing FOR them his guests An alternate approach would be to say that the phrase STAND ON (AYIN LAMED) idiomatically means SERVE *2 Rashi on this verse shows that literal translation of Ex28-23 MAKE ON THE CHOSHEN would lead to contradictions Hence Rashi retranslates AYIN LAMED as FOR vs ON. Hence Rashi translates Ex28-33 as MAKE FOR THE CHOSHEN. We need not go into details here--for our purposes the important point is that AYIN-LAMED can mean FOR. *3 The MIDRASH RABBAH points out that there are two meanings of AYIN LAMED in this verse since it could also mean that Moses should WAIVE HIS HAND CONCERNING HEAVEN(To initiate the plague of boils) |

*1 Many people are familiar with the concept of the FORMULA PLUG IN. That is a problem is solved by a formula which you plug into. But some problems intrinsically cannot (initally) be solved by a formula. Instead you have to formulate the problem algebraically and solve;only then do you have the formula. In other words these problems are solved by the EQUATION vs the FORMULA Thus the statement that the eldest gets double suggests the following model. - Suppose the are B brothers - Suppose 1 of them is eldest - The Fathers total assets are T (Total) - Let A be the amount each brother inherits We have no formula for A - Then each of the B-1 brothers obtains A - The eldest obtains double, 2A. - Together this exhausts the Fathers estate, T Hence we have (B-1)A + 2A = (B+1)A = T This gives rise to the formula A = T / (B+1) An example is a father with 100,000 and 4 children - T=100,000 - B=4 - So each child take T/(B+1) = 100000/5 = 20,000 - Eldest takes 2*20000=40000 - Other 3 take 20000 - Total distribution =3*20000+40000=100000 See Rambam Inheritance Chapter 2 *2 e.g. The father is a non jew from outside Israel He marries a Canaanite women in Israel By law when Israel is conquered she must be killed But the son follows the father, is not considered Canaanite, need not be killed and can be used as a slave byus. |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 5 main goals was the resolution of contradiction We call this the RASHI RULE OF CONTRADICTION. Rashi had a variety of methods to resolve contradiction. Very often the CONTRADICTION could be resolved by viewing the contradictory properties as applying to TWO CASES. We call this the Rashi SUBRULE of TWO CASES. EXAMPLE Nu05-08d ---------------- Compare the contradiction in the following verse-- ------------------------------------------------- If the stolen-from person has no heir then the returned guilt [i.e. theft and fine] belongs - to GOD - to the PRIEST ------------------------------------------------- Rashi elegantly resolves the contradiction by seeing GOD and PRIEST as two aspects of one entity! ---------------------------------------------- The person has no heir so the theft must be returned TO GOD. However GOD DELEGATES the PRIESTS to receive it on his behalf ----------------------------------------------- LIST510a below summarizes other cases where Biblical contradictions are resolved by 2 cases.

*1 See Lv26-03. Thus Lv26-03:06 explicitly states that when we observe, God will remove wild animals. Dt08-02 by contrast, explains that conquest of Israel will happen slowly FOR IF IT HAPPEEND QUICKLY WILD ANIMALS WOULD COME (because the Jews moral nature was not yet perfected and the protection of Lv26-03:06 does not yet apply) *11 *2 COARSE flour was used in cooking to wash the pot sides to clear it from rust producing agents and rotted food particles. *3 I should mention the Brilliant Malbim who points out to a repeated object denoting emphasis ----------------------------------------- She opened it and saw HIM -- a CHILD ----------------------------------------- Thus the child had a certain regality *12 *4 This distinction is explicitly mentioned in Ex01-10 Pharoh was concerned that the Jewish minority would align with an Egyptian enemy. Hence he killed the males. *13 *5 See Lv08-16:21 for Moses acting as a Priest. During this brief period Moses used the Temple Basin.
*10 Rashis point is strengthened by the abrupt change of subject ----------------------------------------------- Nu04-04 This is the job of the KEHATHITES Nu04-05 The PRIESTS come and cover the articles ... Nu04-15 ..and AFTERWARDS the KEHATHITES come ----------------------------------------------- If one just reads Nu04-04 and Nu04-05 by themselves it appears as if the PRIESTS mentioned in Nu04-05 refer back to the KEHATHITES mentioned in Nu04-04 *11 Interesting Rashi cites a verse in Job rather than the explicit Lv26-03:06. Rashi also does not explicitly mention that he is using the rule of resolving 2 contradictory cases. But that IS what Rashi does. It seems rather straightforward to introduce Lv26-03:06. Rashi probably expected the reader to know this verse since it comes in the great REBUKE---Rashi complements this verses with complementary verses in Job *12 Rashis actual language is that ------------------------------------ She saw Gods presence with him ------------------------------------ I have tempered this a bit as follows --------------------------- She saw the childs regality --------------------------- I think Rashis point is to explain why she risked her life to save a Jewish child This child was different--he had a certain regality...why not raise him as an Egyptian He would fit in well with the Royal house *13 Rashi actually says ------------------------------------------ Pharohs astrologers said that the Jews have just had a male savior born. Pharoh therefore decreed the death of the male Jews ------------------------------------------ However the REAL driving force of Rashi is the contradictory verses and the resolution from an explicit verse. Rashi avails himself of OTHER VERSES which show that Pharoh always consulted with his astrologers (eg Ex08-12:15). Thus Rashi is simply dressing up the contradiction. The real point of Rashi is the contradiction and the distinction between the people(hated all) and the King. (concerned about security) |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 6 main tasks is to explain Grammar the same way modern Hebrew books explain grammar. One principle of Grammar is the principle of APPOSITION. The APPOSITION principles states that under certain circumstances words occuring in a sentence should be move to an EARLIER/LATER part of a sentence. The example below clarifies. EXAMPLES Nu04-49a ----------------- Nu04-49a states ---------------------------------------------- According to the command of God he censused them under Moses leadership, each person according to his service and work AND THEIR CENSUSES WHICH GOD COMMANDED MOSES ---------------------------------------------- Rashi elegantly interprets the cryptic CAPPED phrase -------------------------------------------- AND THEIR CENSUSES WHICH GOD COMMANDED MOSES -------------------------------------------- using the principle of APPOSITION, as follows: -------------------------------------------------- According to the command of God he - censused them - BY THEIR CENSUSES WHICH GOD COMMANDED(i.e 30-50) under Moses Leadership, each person according to his service and work -------------------------------------------------- By using APPOSITION Rashi understands the verse as talking about - the ACT of census (He CENSUSED them...) - the ATTRIBUTES of census(the CENSUSES God ordered) (that is: 30-50) Both of these were at the order of God. There is an aspect of METONOMY (Related meaning) here since - CENSUSES GOD COMMANDED refers to the - ATTRIBUTES of the CENSUSES GOD COMMANDED Perhaps some students of Rashi would prefer this Rashi classified as METONOMY (Related meaning). However since the verb CENSUS can equally refer to the ACT of CENSUS as well as the DEMOGRAPHICS of census (20-30), therefore we have classifed the Rashi as an example of APPOSITION. LIST075a below summarizes this apposition and brings in many more examples.

Gn01-29a | I God give to MAN plant food---& to the ANIMALS
Lv06-13a | This is the INAUGURATION SACRIFICE-DAILY MNCH
*1 So the verse should be read with all the CAPPED words brought together. For example Gn14-23a is UNDERSTOOD as ----------------------------------------------------- If I take ANYTHING---FROM THREAD TO SHOELACE-from you ----------------------------------------------------- *2 So the Biblical text -------------------- he CENSUSED them -------------------- refers to the ACT of census. The Biblical text ---------------------- CENSUSES OF GOD TO MOSES ---------------------- would refer to the CENSUS categories, Age 30-50, that God ordered Moses. |
