SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 5 main goals is to indicate paragraph structure. One method of paragraph structure is to use the CLIMAX method to infer meaning That is, the ASSUMED CLIMACTIC development of a paragraph theme forces inference of meaning from the paragraph structure EVEN if the individual words dont justify this. EXAMPLE 1: Nu09-22a ------------------- Nu09-20:22 has the GENERAL theme that the CLOUD of GLORY could stay ANY LENGTH OF TIME and then depart. This GENERAL theme is developed as follows: GENERAL Nu09-20 The cloud could stay ANY NUMBER OF DAYS DETAIL Nu09-21 - the cloud could stay..TWELVE HOUR PERIOD DETAIL Nu09-21 - or it could stay......DAY AND NIGHT DETAIL Nu09-22 - or if the cloud stays TWO DAYS DETAIL Nu09-22 - or .................. A MONTH DETAIL Nu09-22 - or .................. DAYS Rashi: The CLIMACTIC development - 12 hours - 24 hours - 2 days - Month - DAYS clearly shows that the word DAYS means a YEAR (Even though DAYS by itself normally does not mean a YEAR) Here Rashi infers meaning from PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE and CLIMACTIC development (but not from the meaning of the words involved). This is a fundamental principle! Understand it. LIST455a below summarizes this argument. EXAMPLE 2: Gn24-55a Gn24-55b ---------------------------- The Biblical text states ----------------------- Please, let the girl stay with us - a DAY = YEAR - or TEN = TEN MONTHS ----------------------- Rashi: The identification of DAY=YEAR and TEN=TEN MONTHS is based on the principle of (ANTI-)CLIMAX which states that first you request something big and then REDUCE your request. LIST455b below summarizes this argument. EXAMPLE 3: Dt28-56a Dt28-57a ---------------------------- Dt28-56 states -------------------------------------------------- The delicate woman shall have a bad eye -A- on her husband -B- on her chidren -C- on the afterbirth that comes from her legs -D- on new borns since she will have to eat them (From lack of food) --------------------------------------------------- Rashi noticed that the (A)-(D) seem to progress - from Husband - to NewBorns Accordingly Rashi interprets (A)-(D) using the principle of CLIMAX ------------------------------------------- -A- on her husband------------RASHI: Her husband -B- on her chidren------------RASHI: Her BIG chidren -C- on the afterbirth that comes from her legs--RASHI: Her YOUNG children -D- on new borns--------------RASHI: Newborns ------------------------------------------- The driving force behind this Rashi interpretation is not the individual words but rather the general climactic structure. LIST455c below summarizes this argument.

CASE | TEXT OF VERSE*1 | RASHI | WHY INTERPRET
-A- | on her husband | Her husband | hubby=hubby
-B- | on her chidren | Her BIG chidren | CLIMAX*2
-C- | on afterbirth from legs | Her YOUNG children | CLIMAX*2

*1 The full verse states ------------------------------------------------- The delicate woman will have a bad eye - on her husband, BIG children, YOUNG children,NEWBORNS because she will have to eat them from lack of food ------------------------------------------------- *2 AFTERBIRTH FROM LEGS sounds like NEWBORNS. The reason Rashi interprets this to mean YOUNG CHILDREN is therefore not because of the meaning of the words but rather because of the CLIMAX principle. Indeed, if you progress - from FATHER - to NEWBORN then it makes sense that inbetween we have the categories - BIG children - YOUNG children |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 10 main methods is the explanation of meaning the same way a dictionary explains meaning. We call this the WORD MEANING method. ---------------------------------------------- Rashi had 10 vehicles to explain meaning. The SYNONYM submethod takes words with known meanings and shows the similarity and nuances in each term. ---------------------------------------------- EXAMPLE: Dt28-65c Dt28-32a -------------------------- Rashi contrasts the Hebrew roots - Yud-Cheth-Lamed (IXL) which means TO EXPECT. - Kaph-Lamed-Hey (KLH) which means TO HOPE. HOPE differs from expectation in that the EXPECTED EVENT may never come about---hence we refer to it as HOPE. Hence Rashi would translate Dt28-65c Dt28-32a as follows --------------------------------------------- In those nations - you will have no rest - you wont [even] have rest for your feet [Rather] God will give you - a feeling of fragmentation - eyes that [only] HOPE - and a depressed spirit ---------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------- Your children will be delivered to another nation - Your eyes see it - and you HOPE for them the whole day - but you are helpless ---------------------------------------------- LIST955z presents other Rashis commenting on SYNONYMS

*1 Also Rashi Dt11-25b. It seems reasonable that - P-Ch-D comes from Poh-Chad - SHARP and would refer to e.g. getting GOOSE PIMPLES (Sharpnesses in skin) from fear - MoRaH comes from Y-R-A = vision = LONG TERM apprehension over the future.*10 *2 - YOREH seems to comes from HRH to make pregnant. It would look at the rain as ENABLING the seeds to grow - MALKOSH seesm to come from LKSH - TO THE HARD(KSH) GRAIN and would refer to a final softening rain before the produce. See LIST910i *11 *3 It is hard to absolutely prove that - A-V-H means FANTASIZE vs - Ch-M-D means DESIRE ACQUISITION The verses show that - A-V-H is an act of the HEART while - Ch-M-D is focused on ACQUIRING OBJECTS See LIST955h for further details (Also see Rashi Gn27-15a Gn03-06c Gn03-06d) *4 On Dt19-16a Rashi gives an example of REMOVED/FABRICATED Testimony--when eg witnesses testify to a murder in NY and other witnesses come stating that the 1st witnesses were with them in Chicago at the time of witnessing--thus the murder testimony is totally removed from the real word *5 Undoubtedly there is probably a subtle difference between ANIH/SFINH but it is not possible to determine this from verses. An interesting statistical note is the following - SFINH occurs ONCE in the Bible - ANIH occurs 3 dozen times in the Bible - But in Biblical times the frequencies were reversed Hence, Rashi, in explaining the more frequently occurring ANIH was responding to the rarity of this word IN HIS TIME *6 - GRASS can refer to MANY or SINGULAR grass - MEADOW only refers to a WHOLE MEADOW of GRASS *7 TWK verses Beth (CENTRALLY IN vs IN) explains several Rashis: Nu17-21a Gn02-09b Ex24-1a Lv24-10c Gn01-06b Nu35-34a See LIST955j *8 Hence - Ex28-28c TIGHTEN the AYFOD garment - P031-21 Save me from GANGS(people TIGHTELY together) - Is40-04 God will smooth the TIGHT mountains (Rashi explains that TIGHT MOUNTAINS are mountains close together with deep georges between them)*12
*10 The reader need NOT believe the above etymologies For frequently Rashi explains synonyms without reference to etymologies and even without reference to verses. However some of the above etymologies seem reasonable and may enrich our appreciation of the synonyms. *11 Rashi gives another etymology from the Aramaic. However in this list we advocate the 2nd explanation of Rashi over the 1st. Furthermore in this particular case the 2nd explanation comes internally from Hebrew while the 1st Rashi explanation INFERS usage from Aramaic but does not EXPLAIN it. *12 Rashi translates RKS as UNITE. I have examined the verses and think the nuances of TIGHTEN-which is a particular form of tightening is more precise Rashi and my analysis apparently override the RADACK who translates (from context) RKS as meaning HIGH. Compare - RAISE the AYFOD (By tightening it) - Save me from HAUGHTY people - God will smooth the HIGH mountains *13 Rashi brings several distinctions on the nuances between VOWS vs DONATIONS - VOWS are PERSONAL (eg I will bring...) - DONATIONS are OBJECT oriented (eg This material is to Tmpl) - VOWS come for OFFERINGS - DONATIONS come for TEMPLE repairs - VOWS come for personal EXPIATION - DONATIONS do not come personal EXPIATION Rashi in fact notes that the word FOR EXPIATION (Resh-Tzade-Hey) does occur in Lv22-23. However this is just an accident. The main Rashi point comes from the VOW:DONATION difference---in English also - VOW has personal connotation (I undertake..) while - DONATION has object connotation (this item goes to..) |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 5 main goals is to explain meaning the same way a dictionary explains meaning. One method of explaining meaning is to NAME BY FORM/APPEARANCE---thus for example the PENTAGON names an INSTITUTION by its FORM while the UN (United Nations) names it by its FUNCTION Example Dt28-22h ----------------------------------------------------- The phrase ------------------------- GreenSickness of grain ------------------------- means ----------------------------------------- MILDEW (Grain stricken by MILDEW develops a GREENISH color) ----------------------------------------- Here the word GREEN refers to the FORM/COLOR of the sickness. Examples of such usage abound---for example, an ORANGE dress refers to a dress that has the same color as the FRUIT orange. LIST813a below presents many examples/Rashis of words named by FORM/APPEARANCE.

*1 The original meaning of the word Q-W-M is to AWAKE. From this it means STAND UP. When applied to inanimate objects it refers to a vertical standing *2 Demons in dreams often appear with HORNS Hence it is reasonable to call them GOATS *3 This root seems to be very controversial. For example some people (Radack cites them) suggest that the root is Zayin-Nun (WEAPON) with an added prefix of Aleph. Hence Rav Hirsch suggests that the etymology is PERSONAL (ALEPH) WEAPONS. I would simply say that the UTENSIL BELT with hanging cases on both sides looks like 2 ears on a head. Thus the meaning is based on FORM.*10 *4 The verse literally is translated as follows ---------------------------------------------- So they (The Kehatites) shall not come and look as the holy (objects) are being packed ----------------------------------------------- For possible further examples see footnote *11 *5 cf these verses showing that LOZ means TWISTED or DEVIANT Pr03-21, Pr03-33,Pr02-15. (Rashi cites the French name of these trees) *6 The Hebrew root Resh-Beth-Dalet means - Necklace(Gn41-42c, Ez16-11) - Quilt(Pr07-16, Pr31-21) These are the only 4 occurences in the Bible. Both NECKLACES and QUILTS have the FORM of LINKED CIRCULAR items.*12 *7 The root GIMEL-BETH can mean PUDDLE or HIGH (Puddles are HIGH spots on the ground). I think the HAIR on a persons head and the LINT on a new wool garment resemble a PUDDLE OF HAIR LIKE PROTRUSIONS. Again the emphasis is on naming by form. *13 *8 A BOARD = a BARKLESS tree log looks like a PALE person (BARK on wood is like RUDDINESS on face)
*10 To be fair Rashi explains TWO words in this verse - The Hebrew Aleph-Zayin-Nun means WEAPON - The Hebrew AL which usually means ON can also mean BESIDES. For the 6 meanings of AL see http://www.RashiYomi.com/al-5.htm Or visit the Rashi word page, http://www.RashiYomi.com/words.htm *11 Radack in his book, Biblical roots, lists 3 meanings ------------------------------------------------- a) SWALLOW as in Jr51-34--He SWALLOWED me like a Crockodile b) DESTROY as in La02-02 - God has DESTROYED, without mercy c) HIDE/PACK as in Nu04-20 ------------------------------------------------- It is debatable whether there are other verses illustrating this meaning of HIDE. Radack suggests Jb27-30 and Jb10-08. I would say Is19-03--- ------------------------------ God will HIDE (conceal) their advice ------------------------------ the metaphor of HIDING ADVICE is similar to the tone at 2S15-31. Suffice it to say that there is much controversy on all the proper meaning of all these verses. However our translation of Nu04-20 seems to be standard *12 One subtle point about seductresses using quilts: The quilt is both a COVER and an EXPOSURE (because of the many air spaces in the quilt). Hence a seductress COVERED with a quilt also EXPOSES herself (and thereby seduces). *13 It has come to my attention that we have several lists on meaning by FORM. Namely -------------------------------------------------- LIST VOLUME # NUMBER # ITEM NAMED BY FORM -------- --------- --------- --------------------- LIST804a Volume 16 Number 22 NOUNS named by form LIST814a Volume 19 Number 9 VERBS named by form LIST810b Volume 21 Number 15 NOUNS named by Form LIST813a Volume 20 Number 9 NOUNS named by Form --------------------------------------------------- We hope to consolidate these in the near future. |

VERSE: Dt28-30b
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-04 | ||
One of Rashis 10 major methods is the CONTRADICTION method. Rashi had 3 methods to resolve CONTRADICTORY BIBLICAL TEXTS - the two texts reflect 2 STAGES on 1 process - the two texts reflect 2 ASPECTS of 1 state - the two texts use BROAD-LITERAL interpretation EXAMPLE 1: Dt28-30b ------------------------------------------- Dt28-30 states ------------------------------------------------------------ - you will ENGAGE a woman----SOMEONE else will MARRY her - you will BUILD a house-----SOMEONE else will DWELL in it - you will PLANT a vineyard--SOMEONE else will DESCECRATE it ------------------------------------------------------------ This appears contradictory. The ENGAGE-MARRY and BUILD-DWELL contrasts suggest --------------------------------------------------- You will BEGIN a project-----SOMEONE else will CONSUMATE it --------------------------------------------------- We would therefore expect in the 3rd last clause --------------------------------------------------- You will PLANT a vineyard----SOMEONE else will CONSUME it --------------------------------------------------- Thus we expect CONSUME/EAT but instead the Bible uses the contradictory word DESCECRATE. Rashi resolves this CONTRADICTION by broadening the meaning of DESCECRATE. Rashi does this based on Lv19-23:25 which states ---------------------------------------------------- When you plant a vineyard - the first three years ---- fruit is poison--don't eat - the 4th year-------------- fruit is HOLY(Eat in Jerusalem) - the 5th year-------------- you can eat plant it ---------------------------------------------------- Quite simply if the fruit is HOLY in the 4th year -- HOLINESS meaning you shouldn't eat it--then the fruit is DESCECRATED (The opposite of HOLINESS) in the 5th year when you can eat it. So we infer that DESCECRATION in this context means YOU CAN EAT IT (vs HOLINESS meaning that you can't eat it at home) Thus Rashi resolves this CONTRADICTION using the BROAD-LITERAL method. LIST520a gives examples of CONTRADICTIONS resolved thru BROAD LITERAL

*1 Hence the fire did not burn their clothes The idea that the FIRES mentioned in Dt05 or Ex20 was the FIRE OF PROPHECY vs REAL FIRE is supported by many verses and themes (Dt05-21). There are other Biblical supports for this idea but this will suffice for now.*10 *2 Also echoed in Rashi Lv07-07b (OFFERING PRIEST means PRIESTS WHO COULD OFFER) *3 Thus the request to kill the Jews is seen as a WISH (BROAD interpretation)not as something real *4 That Bilam didnt know what his donkey knew is interpreted literally. That he claimed to know Gods thoughts is considered a LIE(Broad, non- literal interpretation).
*10 It does not detract from the greatness of the miracle of revelation that the FIRE means FIRE OF PROPHECY. For Judaism does not view Gods greatness in His ability to make a mountain smoke with Fire. Rather Judaism views Gods greatness in His ability to make people burn with Spiritual Prophecy |
