SUCCINCT SUMMARY: ----------------- One of Rashis 10 major goals is to illustrate (a) complex geometric designs or (b) algebraic computations. This is called the Rashi method of SPREADSHEETS, since SPREADSHEETS are one method of clarifying a complex relationship. The SPREADSHEET method can also refer to (c) any illustration of a verse that clarifies it. EXAMPLE 1: Dt31-21b ------------------- Dt31-21 states that God told Moses that --------------------------------------------- When troubles befall the Jewish people this poem will testify against them BECAUSE IT WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN FROM THEM --------------------------------------------- On the phrase -------------------------------------------- BECAUSE IT WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN FROM THEM -------------------------------------------- Rashi comments ---------------------------------------- From this we infer that the Torah (which contains the POEM OF REBUKE) will never be forgotten from the Jewish people ---------------------------------------- We classify this Rashi comment as a SPREADSHEET because - the phrase IT WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN has clear meaning - Rashi's inference does not clarify the MEANING of the verse but rather presents an INFERENCE Consequently we call this the SPREADSHEET method EXAMPLE 2: Dt31-26b ------------------- Dt31-26 states ------------------------------------------- Write this Torah and place it on the SIDE of the Ark of God ------------------------------------------- Rashi based on the Talmud in Baba Bathra 14, gives various computations of the word SIDE. - (Explanation a) There was an ATTACHMENT ON THE SIDE OF THE ARK and they placed the Torah, Moses wrote, there - (Explanation b) Rashi computes - - - the total width of the ark box - - - the width of the 2 Tablets with the 10 commandments which were there - - - the width of the boards of the ark - - - the width of the Torah Based on these computations Rashi/Talmud suggest how the Torah might have snugly fit INSIDE the ark on the SIDE. Since certain numbers were not known (eg the width of the boards of the ark) several possibilities are presented. Although the Talmud goes into computational detail Rashi simply mentions the IDEA of measurements influencing the interpretation of the text. For this reason we call this the SPREADSHEET rule. *1 Many people are familiar with the concept of the FORMULA PLUG IN. That is a problem is solved by a formula which you plug into. But some problems intrinsically cannot (initally) be solved by a formula. Instead you have to formulate the problem algebraically and solve;only then do you have the formula. In other words these problems are solved by the EQUATION vs the FORMULA Thus the statement that the eldest gets double suggests the following model. - Suppose the are B brothers - Suppose 1 of them is eldest - The Fathers total assets are T (Total) - Let A be the amount each brother inherits We have no formula for A - Then each of the B-1 brothers obtains A - The eldest obtains double, 2A. - Together this exhausts the Fathers estate, T Hence we have (B-1)A + 2A = (B+1)A = T This gives rise to the formula A = T / (B+1) An example is a father with 100,000 and 4 children - T=100,000 - B=4 - So each child take T/(B+1) = 100000/5 = 20,000 - Eldest takes 2*20000=40000 - Other 3 take 20000 - Total distribution =3*20000+40000=100000 See Rambam Inheritance Chapter 2 *2 Rashi gives a clarifying example to the verse GOD FORGIVES HER -------------------------------------------------------------- - the women vowed to become a nazarite - the husband annuled her vow - but the husband did not tell her about the annulment - the women then violated her vow - - In such a case God forgives the women (despite her intending to commit a sin) because of the unknown annulment of her husband - - We conclude that sin is an attribute of ACTION,not INTENT -------------------------------------------------------------- |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Some Rashi comments deal with FORMATTING. Modern authors FORMAT using such techniques as BULLETS, PARAGRAPHING, BOLD, ITALICS and UNDERLINE. The Biblical Author achieved these effects but thru different means. For example a modern author might hilight distinct items using BULLETS. The Biblical Author hilights distinct items using REPEATING KEYWORDS. We call this the Rashi rule of FORMATTING with the Rashi subrule of KEYWORDS AS BULLETS EXAMPLE: Dt30-12a ------------------------------------- Dt30-11:14 states as follows - For the law which I command you today - - IS NOT unknown to you - - IS NOT far from you - - IS NOT in heaven - - IS NOT beyond the sea - But [rather] the law is very accessible ------------------------------------- Notice the repeating keyword: NOT. The BULLET method now requires that EACH of the the BULLETS be given distinctive meaning. Rashi only explains TWO of the 4 bullets. The Talmud explains the 4th bullet but not fully. Here are the explanations ---------------------------------------------- - IT IS NOT unknown You dont have to ask a Rabbi(Rashi) - IT IS NOT far no need to travel to TORAH CENTERS - IT IS NOT in heaven no need for further prophecy(Rashi) - IT IS NOT in sea no need for Richs(SeaFearer-Talmud) ---------------------------------------------- LIST120e below summarizes this interpretation and also gives supplementary material in the footnotes on sources.

IT IS NOT | in heaven | no need for further prophecy | Rashi*6
IT IS NOT | in sea | no need for riches | Talmud*7
|
||||
*1 The biblical text uses the keywords IT IS NOT The Rashi BULLET rule interprets the repeating keyword as having the same effect as a BULLET in modern FORMATTING *2 These are the 4 cases listed in the Biblical text *3 See the footnotes in the SOURCE column for a contrast of what commentators actually said and how I have interpreted them *4 Rashi actually says ----------------------------------------------- The text means THE LAW IS NOT COVERED UP ----------------------------------------------- Rashi then shows that the Hebrew words used mean COVERED. I have interpreted the Rashi to mean ----------------------------------------------- You don't have to ask a Rabbi about Biblical law the way you ask a Rabbi in other covered up laws ----------------------------------------------- My identification of COVERED UP with ASK A RABBI is based on is based on similar language usage in Dt17-08 (the Hebrew word used in this verse, Pay Lamed Aleph which means covered up is used in Dt17-08 to indicate a need for Rabbinical decision *5 Neither the Talmud nor Rashi explains this. I have given the obvious interpretation that you don't have to travel to a "known Torah city." Rather every person can establish a learning schedule for themselves based on the texts they have (The intensity of learning quality however goes up in a Torah city) *6 Rashi/Talmud simply says ------------------------------------------------ The Torah law is not in heaven...because if it was someone would have to go to heaven to get it for you ------------------------------------------------ It would be silly to interpret this literally. I have therefore interpreted HEAVEN to mean PROPHECY which is consistent with other biblical usage. In terms of the bullet principle we have to interpret this text distinctly. Hence I interpret it HEAVEN=PROPHECY to mean ----------------------------------------------- - you don't need FURTHER PROPHECY to understand Jewish law. ----------------------------------------------- This is fully consistent with the rest of Jewish law. *7 Rashi does NOT interpret this. The talmud (Eruvin 55) states ---------------------------------------- the torah is not found in sea merchants ---------------------------------------- Thus the Talmud interprets SEA to mean SEA MERCHANTS This is an example of METONOMY (RELATED meaning) I have accepted this talmudic interpretation but gone a step farther: I have explained the PROBLEM with sea merchants learning -------------------------------------------- They do not have enough time since their time is devoted to acquiring riches -------------------------------------------- Furthermore, consistent with the style I of the paragraph I have explained that -------------------------------------- RICHES are not needed to acquire Torah -------------------------------------- |

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ One of Rashis 10 main goals is to explain word meanings the same way a dictionary does. Rashi had 10 vehicles by which to explains word meaning. Rashi would sometimes take a word whose meaning is known and clarify the exact nuances of the word. For example the Hebrew root Yud-Daleth-Ayin is normally translated as TO KNOW. However closer examination of the verses shows that it means TO APPRECIATE. EXAMPLE Dt29-25a ---------------- If we translate Yud Daleth Ayin as TO APPRECIATE then Dt29-25 is interpreted as follows ---------------------------------------------- ...they strayed and worshipped other gods ...gods that they did not APPRECIATE ---------------------------------------------- LIST955n presents many Rashis which translate Yud-Daleth Ayin as meaning to APPRECIATE.

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashi's 10 major methods is the use of OTHER VERSES to clarify existing verses. Rashi can use OTHER VERSES to a) provide more details b) justify citations and cross references and c) to infer meaning. We call this the RASHI METHOD of OTHER VERSES and the RASHI SUBMETHODS of FURTHER DETAILS, CITATIONS, and INFERRED MEANING. EXAMPLE Dt29-11b ---------------- Dt29-11 states --------------------------------- ...[you are standing here] to PASS INTO THE TREATY with God --------------------------------- Rashi explains the unusual phrase PASS INTO THE TREATY with God by citing an OTHER VERSE. Jr34-18 states -------------------------------------- the people who violated my treaty ...the calf that was cut in two ...THEY PASSED THRU ITS CUTS -------------------------------------- Based on this OTHER VERSE Rashi explains ---------------------------------------- In olden times TREATYS were made by cutting an animal in half; each of the two parties would then PASS THRU BETWEEN THE TWO CUT HALVES; [they would then eat the animal to cement the treaty] ----------------------------------------- EXAMPLE 2: Dt29-25b ------------------- Dt29-25 states -------------------------------- They went and worshipped other gods ...gods NOT APPORTIONED TO THEM -------------------------------- Although Rashi does not cite an OTHER VERSE it seems natural to cite Dt04-19 which also uses the word APPORTION and also speaks about idolatry ------------------------------------- Lest you look heavenward ...and go astray and worship other gods WHICH GOD APPORTIONED TO THE OTHER NATIONS... ------------------------------------- We see from this other verse that the word APPORTIONED is used here in the sense of ASSIGNED. Hence the Rashi --------------------------------------- The phrase in Dt29-25 NOT APPORTIONED TO THEM means GOD DID NOT CREATE THESE FOR ASSIGNMENT --------------------------------------- Rashi also cites other interpretations but the above interpretation based on an OTHER VERSE seems most natural. LIST250a below gives other examples of inferring meaning from OTHER VERSES.

*1 Ex13-20 Jews journeyed from Succoth after Exodus Ex12-27 Exodus: Jews go from Raamsayth to Succoth Nu33-05 Exodus, Then Raamsayth, THen Succoth The point is that Nu33-05 makes it clear that there were 3 places - Exodus FROM Egypt - TO Raamsayth - TO Succoth. Ex13-20 only mentions 2 of the places Ex12-27 makes it sound like they left EGYPT, ie they left RAAMSAYTH. It is in fact common for places to have multiple names. So Nu33-05 illumines that there were 3 distinct places *2 Also see Ex30-11:16 which prohibits DIRECTLY counting people. Instead, we must count the COINS of each person and from this infer the total count. *3 Nu17-05 further illumines by calling it a MEMORIAL Thus we have SYMBOL MEMORIAL BANNER. Since NAYS means BANNER it refers to anything that ATTRACTS attention such as SYMBOLS or MIRACLES *4 In this example the Hebrew word TaMid can mean either CONTINUAL or CONTINUOUS depending on context. *5 Rashi extends the meaning of GIFT TO THE DEAD to all BURIAL RELATED MATTERS such as provision of shrouds and the coffin *6 Rashi notes that Gn15-17 speaks about --------------------------------------------------- The FIRE PILLAR that TRANSITED thru the cut animals --------------------------------------------------- Since FIRE is symbolic of PROPHETIC ENCOUNTER we infer that GOD symbolically TRANSITED the cut animals to affirm the CONVENANT He made with Abraham *7 In the case of sale of estate the inheritance "leaves the family." To STAND the inheritance is to INHERIT the property so that the property STANDS (that is, remains) in the family. [In passing Rashi seems to derive certain laws from the word TOGETHER...when brothers live TOGETHER...however I believe that all the derivations come from the nuances of STAND) *8 Jr34-18 speaks about treaty makers ---------------------------------------- CUTTING AN ANIMAL AND PASSING THRU THE CUTS ---------------------------------------- Rashi explains that those who wished to make a treaty would - cut an animal in half - place the two halves down - the two parties to the treaty would - walk inbetween the two halves - [and then eat the animal to cement the treaty] Hence the IDIOM: PASS INTO TREATY.
|
||||
*10 Rashi also on this verse cites 5-6 verses to show that the Hebrew root Nun-Vuv-Aleph means to RATTLE However the phrase RATTLE THE VOW still needs clarification which is done by comparing it to Nu30-09--RATTLE VOW and ANNUL it. Since the major part of the derivation is from the OTHER VERSE we omit this supplemental list of verses. |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 10 main goals is to explain grammar the same way GRAMMAR textbooks explain GRAMMAR. GRAMMAR has a rich variety of rules. One little known rule of GRAMMAR is the pun rule which states that an author can misspell a word so as to give dual meaning to words (the misspelled word hints at another meaning). We call this the rule of PUNS. PUNS are common in all languages. In FALL 2006 a paper on PUNS will appear in the JEWISH BIBLE QUARTERLY. In that paper I show how Biblical puns are frequently intended by the Author and describe the various types of puns. PUNS are a powerful method to indicate additional information. EXAMPLE Dt30-03a ---------------- Dt30-03 states ---------------------------------------- [If you repent] God will RETURN your captives and have pity on you ------------------------------------ The Hebrew word for RETURN YOUR CAPTIVES - is written in the ACTIVE mode (HE WILL RETURN) - vs the CAUSATIVE mode (HE WILL RETURN YOU) This deliberate misspelling evokes the following Rashi comment ------------------------------------------ As it were, God Himself was in exile with us. When we return he will return ------------------------------------------ LIST080a below gives a list of BIBLICAL PUNS
