SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 5 main goals is to explain meaning the same way a dictionary explains meaning. One method of explaining meaning is to NAME BY FORM/APPEARANCE---thus for example the PENTAGON names an INSTITUTION by its FORM while the UN (United Nations) names it by its FUNCTION Example 1 Dt32-04a ----------------------------------------------------- The phrase ------------------------- PROTRUDED hunger ------------------------- means either ----------------------------------------- BLOATED from hunger ----------------------------------------- or ----------------------------------------- Kwashiorkor (PROTRUDING bones from hunger) ----------------------------------------- or ----------------------------------------- Excess hair protrusions from hunger(Rashi) [people who are starving initially develop lots of hair] ----------------------------------------- We have deliberately supplemented Rashi's explanation with alternate explanations to emphasize that Rashi is making the inference from SIMILARITY IN FORM (PROTRUSIONS=hair, Bloating, bones) EXAMPLE 2 Dt32-24d Dt32-24e ------------------------- Similarly the phrase -------------------- war-ing flames -------------------- means -------------------- waring DEMONS -------------------- since DEMONS have the appearance of FLAMES. (Note: The verse indicates PROGRESSION since it is normal for starving people to hallucinate attack by demons--see LIST451b for further details) EXAMPLE 3 Dt32-24g ------------------ Finally --------------------------- the VIOLENCE OF DUST CRAWLERS --------------------------- refers to --------------------------- the VENOM of SNAKES --------------------------- Here SNAKES are named by their form(CRAWL ON DUST) EXAMPLE 4 Dt32-14L ------------------ Cheth-Mem-Resh means to CHURN (eg my stomach CHURNS) and hence it refers to the intoxicated feeling of STRONG WINE. Here the INTOXICATION is named by its form---the drinkers thinks the world is CHURNING LIST813a below presents many examples/Rashis of words named by FORM/APPEARANCE. SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Rashi frequently made inferences based on the Biblical STYLE. We call this Rashi Rule the RABBI ISHMAEL STYLE rule. A powerful style rule was the painting of a verse in a CLIMACTIC DEVELOPMENT manner. We call this the RASHI SUBRULE of CLIMAX EXAMPLE Dt32-24 --------------- Dt32-24 has the following clear CLIMACTIC structure ------------------------------------------------------------- -- [HUMAN] BLOATED from hunger -- [HUMAN] [Hallucinations of] flaming [war-ing] flames [demons] (Dt32-24c) -- [HUMAN] bitter sudden death (Dt32-24d, Dt32-24e) -- [ANIMAL] EVEN tame animals bite (Dt32-24f)(From hunger) -- [non-Hunger] Venomous bites of DUST-CRAWLERS=SNAKES (Dt32-24g) ------------------------------------------------------------- Notice the PROGRESSION - HUMAN suffering (hunger, hallucination, sudden death) - ANIMAL (EVEN tame animals bite) - NON-HUNGER (Snakes continue to bite) Within the HUMAN suffering we also see a progression - HUNGER - HALLUCINATIONS - DEATH Some Rashi comments were motivated by the PROGRESSIVE CONTRAST For example ------------------ ANIMALS BITE ------------------ is interpreted by Rashi to mean ------------------- EVEN Tame animals bite ------------------- The proper understanding of this verse requires combining - the NAMING by form - INTERPRETATION using CLIMAX See LIST451b below which summarizes this argument. SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashi's 10 major methods is the explanation of meaning similar to the goal of a dictionary. Rashi had 10 vehicles by which to explain meaning. A particularly straightforward method to explain meaning is the VERSE-NAMING method--here the meaning of a Biblical root is ascertained by reviewing many verses with this root. EXAMPLE 1 Dt32-24d Dt32-24e --------------------------- Finally the Hebrew root Kuph-Teth-Beth means - being cut off (Rashi) - being cut off SUDDENTLY (Radack) Notice how Radack beautifully supplements Rashi. We can justify Rashi/Radack by examining the only 4 verses in the Bible that use this root. ----------------------------------------------- Dt32-24d Dt32-24e hunger, hallucinations BITTER SUDDEN DEATH Is28-02 torrential hail SUDDEN TORNADOES(Cutting winds) Ho14-13 ...the SUDDEN DEATH of hell P091-06 ...from a SUDDEN DEATH plundering the noon ---------------------------------------------------- Note that the translation SUDDEN DEATH vs DEATH (Radack vs Rashi) would equally fit all the verses. LIST811i below summarizes this interpretation. EXAMPLE 2 Dt32-14e ------------------- Cheth-Mem-Aleph means cream I think this is particularly clear from the following verses ----------------------------------------------- Is07-22 from an abundance of milk people will eat CREAM P055-22 his CREAMY lips(speech) is SLICK Pr30-33 CREAM is SQUEEZED MILK Gn18-08 he took the CREAM and MILK he made ... Dt32-14 the CREAM of cattle and the FAT of sheep ------------------------------------------------ LIST811j summarizes this.

*1 The word MZI means PROTRUSION and could mean - BLOATING - PROTRUDING BONES (Kwashiorkor) - starving people grow excessive hair *2 DEMONS have the FORM of FLAMES(See LIST813a) *3 Kuph-Tet-Beth means SUDDEN DEATH see LIST811i *4 There is progression: HUMAN-ANIMAL-SNAKE(Non Hunger related) So Rashi interprets - ANIMAL BITES to mean EVEN TAME animals bite(from hunger) - DUST CRAWLERS means SNAKE BITES (Which happen even without hunger) NOTE: SNAKES have form of DUST CRAWLERS (see LIST813a) |

*1 The original meaning of the word Q-W-M is to AWAKE. From this it means STAND UP. When applied to inanimate objects it refers to a vertical standing *2 Demons in dreams often appear with HORNS Hence it is reasonable to call them GOATS *3 This root seems to be very controversial. For example some people (Radack cites them) suggest that the root is Zayin-Nun (WEAPON) with an added prefix of Aleph. Hence Rav Hirsch suggests that the etymology is PERSONAL (ALEPH) WEAPONS. I would simply say that the UTENSIL BELT with hanging cases on both sides looks like 2 ears on a head. Thus the meaning is based on FORM.*10 *4 The verse literally is translated as follows ---------------------------------------------- So they (The Kehatites) shall not come and look as the holy (objects) are being packed ----------------------------------------------- For possible further examples see footnote *11 *5 cf these verses showing that LOZ means TWISTED or DEVIANT Pr03-21, Pr03-33,Pr02-15. (Rashi cites the French name of these trees) *6 The Hebrew root Resh-Beth-Dalet means - Necklace(Gn41-42c, Ez16-11) - Quilt(Pr07-16, Pr31-21) These are the only 4 occurences in the Bible. Both NECKLACES and QUILTS have the FORM of LINKED CIRCULAR items.*12 *7 The root GIMEL-BETH can mean PUDDLE or HIGH (Puddles are HIGH spots on the ground). I think the HAIR on a persons head and the LINT on a new wool garment resemble a PUDDLE OF HAIR LIKE PROTRUSIONS. Again the emphasis is on naming by form. *13 *8 A BOARD = a BARKLESS tree log looks like a PALE person (BARK on wood is like RUDDINESS on face) *9 ZIZ means PROTRUSION. Hence MZI RAAV would be TRANSLATED as PROTRUDED HUNGER and could mean ----------------------------------------- BLOATED from hunger ----------------------------------------- or ----------------------------------------- Kwashiorkor (PROTRUDING bones from hunger) ----------------------------------------- or ----------------------------------------- Excess hair protrusions from hunger(Rashi) [people who are starving initially develop lots of hair] ----------------------------------------- We have deliberately supplemented Rashi's explanation with alternate explanations to emphasize that Rashi is making the inference from SIMILARITY IN FORM (PROTRUSIONS=hair, Bloating, bones) Rashi seems to make this comment in both Dt32-24a and Dt32-24b
*10 To be fair Rashi explains TWO words in this verse - The Hebrew Aleph-Zayin-Nun means WEAPON - The Hebrew AL which usually means ON can also mean BESIDES. For the 6 meanings of AL see http://www.RashiYomi.com/al-5.htm Or visit the Rashi word page, http://www.RashiYomi.com/words.htm *11 Radack in his book, Biblical roots, lists 3 meanings ------------------------------------------------- a) SWALLOW as in Jr51-34--He SWALLOWED me like a Crockodile b) DESTROY as in La02-02 - God has DESTROYED, without mercy c) HIDE/PACK as in Nu04-20 ------------------------------------------------- It is debatable whether there are other verses illustrating this meaning of HIDE. Radack suggests Jb27-30 and Jb10-08. I would say Is19-03--- ------------------------------ God will HIDE (conceal) their advice ------------------------------ the metaphor of HIDING ADVICE is similar to the tone at 2S15-31. Suffice it to say that there is much controversy on all the proper meaning of all these verses. However our translation of Nu04-20 seems to be standard *12 One subtle point about seductresses using quilts: The quilt is both a COVER and an EXPOSURE (because of the many air spaces in the quilt). Hence a seductress COVERED with a quilt also EXPOSES herself (and thereby seduces). *13 It has come to my attention that we have several lists on meaning by FORM. Namely -------------------------------------------------- LIST VOLUME # NUMBER # ITEM NAMED BY FORM -------- --------- --------- --------------------- LIST804a Volume 16 Number 22 NOUNS named by form LIST814a Volume 19 Number 9 VERBS named by form LIST810b Volume 21 Number 15 NOUNS named by Form LIST813a Volume 20 Number 9 NOUNS named by Form --------------------------------------------------- We hope to consolidate these in the near future. |
