SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 10 main methods is the explanation of meaning the same way a dictionary explains meaning. We call this the WORD MEANING method. Today we explore 5 different Rashi methods that explain meaning. Rashi had 10 vehicles to directly explain meaning. Rashi would sometimes explain the meaning of HEBREW BIBLICAL ROOTS by using the meaning of the individual Hebrew letters. Some people erroneously interpret Rashi as not believing in the 3 letter root theory which everyone accepts. Actually Rashi believed that - Hebrew roots had 3 letters and were CONJUGATED the way we all know - Rashi ADDITIONALLY believed that the Hebrew roots themselves were composed of one and two letter roots which themselves had meaning. The examples below will clarify this. EXAMPLE Gn14-02a Beth can mean IN --------------------------------- Gn14-01:02 mentions the names of 9 Kings. Rashi derives personality attributes from the names of these nine kings. The list below shows this Rashi interpretation along with other roots where BETH means IN --------------------------------- BRA (A Name) = A King who had EVIL (RA) IN HIM(Beth) B-ER (Well) = Something whose INside(Beth) is LIT(ER) B-LL (Mix) = TO SWIRL (LL) the INside(Beth) B-SR (rotten) = REMOVE(SR) its INSIDES(Beth) B-TN (Belly) = the BASKET(TNA) withIN(Beth) ---------------------------------- EXAMPLE Gn14-02b Beth can mean THRU / BY ---------------------------------------- BRSA (A Name) = to power THRU(Beth) his WICKEDNESS(RSA) BTA (pronounce) = THRU(Beth) BRANCHING(Tet) [of tongue] SL-B (Content) = THRU(Beth) POSSESION (SL=mine) SG-B (Tall) = THRU(Beth) GROWTH (SGA) B-XN (to test) = THRU IT(Beth) you achieve GRACE(XN) ----------------------------------- From these lists Rashi infers that the king - BRA was a King who had EVIL withIN - BRSA was a king who rose to power THRU EVIL LIST910s below presents roots with BETH meaning IN LIST910t below presents roots with BETH meaning THRU SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Rashi will sometimes explain IDIOMS. An IDIOM is a collection of words, which together means something different than its component parts. Thus the IDIOM endows NEW MEANING to the collection of words. Very often the IDIOMATIC meaning is closely related to the individual words. We call this the NEW MEANING method. EXAMPLE Gn13-03a ---------------- Gn13-03 states -------------------------------------- Abraham WENT BY HIS JOURNEYS ...until he came to his original starting place where he had built an altar -------------------------------------- Rashi explains the IDIOMATIC phrase WENT BY HIS JOURNEYS ---------------------------------- WENT BY HIS JOURNEYS means he lodged at the same hotels he lodged initially ---------------------------------- SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Rashi will very often take a verse whose meaning is understood and ADD a consequence to the verse. We call this the SPREADSHEET method since SPREADSHEETS are very often used to derive consequences of otherwise understood data. The SPREADSHEET method is also used when Rashi gives COMPUTATIONAL or GEOMETRIC diagrams to clarify the meaning of the verse. Rashi also infers MORAL VALUE from the text of Gn13-03a ---Rashi comments ------------------------------------- We infer from this behavior of Abraham the value in revisiting former contacts and gradually building a relationship ------------------------------------- LIST854x presents lists of Biblical idioms LIST690a presents examples of the SPREADSHEET method SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashi's 10 main goals is to explain Grammar the same way Hebrew textbooks explain Grammar. A GRAMMATICAL method that overlaps with word explanation is the ROOT+PREPOSITION method. When using this method we explain the same Hebrew root as meaning different things depending on the connective preposition used with the root. EXAMPLE ------- Gn12-15 states ----------------------------------------- Pharoh's staff saw Sarah and THEY PRAISED HER TO(Aleph Lamed) PHAROH ----------------------------------------- Rashi comments on the phrase PRAISED HER TO (Aleph Lamed) PHAROH -------------------------------------- The words of praise were of the form - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - She is the type of beautiful woman that only a Pharoh deserves - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -------------------------------------- Before explaining Rashi let us clarify how HE would translate the verse -------------------------------------- Pharoh's staff saw Sarah and THEY PRAISED HER RELATED TO PHAROH [AS A WOMAN WORTHY OF A PHAROH] -------------------------------------- In other words Rashi interprets the phrase -------------------------- PRAISE ALEPH-LAMED -------------------------- as meaning -------------------------- PRAISE RELATING TO -------------------------- Rashi would justify his interpretation based on the fact that Gn12-15 is the only verse in the Bible with the strange construction PRAISE + ALEPH-LAMED The traditional prepositional connectives associated with PRAISE are -- PRAISE so and so (Use ETH) -- PRAISE SOMEONE FOR such and Such(use BETH) -- PRAISE AMONG (also uses BETH) -- SELF PRAISE/BRAG (Use BETH) LIST901O summarizes several examples of the Hebrew root to PRAISE, along with different connectives. SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 10 major methods is the derivation of textual interpretation from CONTRADICTIONS between verses. Rashi had 3 methods to resolve contradictions. When Rashi resolves contradictions thru the use of BROAD or LITERAL meanings EXAMPLE Gn12-01d ---------------- In Gn12-01 God tells Abraham ---------------------------- Leave your country ---------------------------- This seems to contradict Gn11-31 which states ------------------------------------------- Terach took his family...Abraham and...and left OR CASDIM journeying to CHARAN ------------------------------------------- If he had ALREADY left why was he told to leave again? Rashi resolves this contradiction thru a use of BROAD interpretation --------------------------------------- - Gn11-31 says that Abraham PHYSICALLY left his country - Gn12-01 requests Abraham to SOCIALLY leave his country That is, he wsa requested to leave his fathers influence ---------------------------------------- LIST520a presents several examples of resolution by broad-literal methods. SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Another grammar method that overlaps with word meaning is the NOUN-VERB-ADJ-TRANSFORMS method. This method studies how words can change from OBJECTS (noun) to ACTIVITIES (verbs) to ATTRIBUTES (adjective). EXAMPLE: Gn13-12a He TENTED --------------------------- Gn13-12 states --------------------------- Lot TENTED to Sedom --------------------------- Rashi comments on the transformation of the object TENT, a noun, to the activity TENTING, a verb --------------------------------------- He TENTED to Sedom means he established many tents along the road [for his shepards and flocks] --------------------------------------- LIST050d presents other examples of TRANSFORMATION of meaning.

Lv13-12a | HEAD to FOOT Whole bod | y
Gn37-26b | COVER BLOOD | conceal MURDER
*1 Rashi, Lv26-17h points out that the phrase ------------- PLACE MY FACE ------------- means -------------- FULL ATTENTION -------------- whether - for good, to reward - for bad, to punish. *2 NOTE: The Hebrew word HEAD can mean both - BEGINNING - TOP However in this verse - the HEAD OF THE CLIFF contrasts with - the VALLEY in MOAB Hence HEAD means TOP *3 A MOUTH LOTTERY refers to a lottery where you stick your hand in and select an item WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO SEE THE ITEMS (In an open-box lottery you can see what you are picking even though you see backs of cards. In a MOUTH LOTTERY the box is covered except for a small MOUTH). The MOUTH LOTTERY is more secure and fairer. Hence the Rashi The name MOUTH LOTTERY is because the box has only a small mouth preventing you from seeing what is inside. --------------------------------------------------- MOUTH LOTTERY means that the LOTTERY speaks and says this belongs to so and so --------------------------------------------------- Of course, Rashi did not believe that LOTTERIES speak. Rather Rashi refers to the SECURITY and FAIRNESS of the lottery. In other words - MOUTH LOTTERY refers to a small MOUTH on LOTTERY box (not to a physical voice on the box) - Since the MOUTH LOTTERY is secure it is AS IF it screams and points to a correct fair choice *4 Rashi is NOT explaining the meaning of the INDIVIDUAL WORDS - GOOD - PROPER Indeed, GOOD can mean SOCIALLY GOOD also (See Gn26-29) Therefore we have interpreted this Rashi as an example of the IDIOM method. *5 These five examples show various idiomatic meanings of the INFINITIVE of the verb TO SAY: TO SAY can mean - TO SAY BACK: Request for response - TO SAY OVER: To Transmit - TO SAY OVER AND OVER: Rumor See LIST955m for a separate summary *6 Thus in Dt18-01 ------------------------------------- The PRIEST-LEVITES shall not inherit from the conquest of Israel ------------------------------------- the phrase PRIEST-LEVITES means PRIESTS OR LEVITES. Another occurrence of this phrase occurs in Dt17-18. In Dt17-09a Rashi does state ------------------------------------ The PRIESTS who are no longer Levites ------------------------------------ But I understand this to mean ------------------------------------ PRIESTS by itself means PRIESTS but not Levites while LEVITES by itself could mean LEVITES but not Priests-- PRIEST LEVITES means PRIESTS OR LEVITES*10 ------------------------------------- *7 Besides the fact that this sounds OK (WENT BY JOURNEYS= STAYED BY SAME HOTELS) the verse gives support --------------------------------------------- HE WENT BY HIS JOURNEYS...UNTIL HE RETURNED TO HIS ORIGINAL PLACE WHERE HE BUILT AN ALTAR ---------------------------------------------
*10 Dt17-09 states --------------------------------------- [If you have a legal question then] ask the PRIEST-LEVITES, the Judges of the day --------------------------------------- The law PREFERS that the great Sanhedrin court in Jerusalem consist of PRIESTS. Levites are a second choice (and Israelite scholars are a third choice). So it appears that Rashi's comment -------------------------------------- Priests but not Levites -------------------------------------- is literal. But in Dt18-01 the prohibition of inheriting conquested Israelie land applies to EITHER Priests OR Levites. Similarly I would interprtet Dt17-09 to mean that EITHER Priests or Levites should preferably be on the Great Sanhedrin. That is the Biblical law. But Rabbinically---since Priests are more involved with the Temple there is a preference for Priests to be elected to the great court vs. Levites. This preference however is rooted in logic not in the verse. The IDIOM, PRIEST-LEVITES means PRIESTS or LEVITES as shown. |

*1 Many people are familiar with the concept of the FORMULA PLUG IN. That is a problem is solved by a formula which you plug into. But some problems intrinsically cannot (initally) be solved by a formula. Instead you have to formulate the problem algebraically and solve;only then do you have the formula. In other words these problems are solved by the EQUATION vs the FORMULA Thus the statement that the eldest gets double suggests the following model. - Suppose the are B brothers - Suppose 1 of them is eldest - The Fathers total assets are T (Total) - Let A be the amount each brother inherits We have no formula for A - Then each of the B-1 brothers obtains A - The eldest obtains double, 2A. - Together this exhausts the Fathers estate, T Hence we have (B-1)A + 2A = (B+1)A = T This gives rise to the formula A = T / (B+1) An example is a father with 100,000 and 4 children - T=100,000 - B=4 - So each child take T/(B+1) = 100000/5 = 20,000 - Eldest takes 2*20000=40000 - Other 3 take 20000 - Total distribution =3*20000+40000=100000 See Rambam Inheritance Chapter 2 *2 Rashi gives a clarifying example to the verse GOD FORGIVES HER -------------------------------------------------------------- - the women vowed to become a nazarite - the husband annuled her vow - but the husband did not tell her about the annulment - the women then violated her vow - - In such a case God forgives the women (despite her intending to commit a sin) because of the unknown annulment of her husband - - We conclude that sin is an attribute of ACTION,not INTENT -------------------------------------------------------------- |

*1 Hence the fire did not burn their clothes The idea that the FIRES mentioned in Dt05 or Ex20 was the FIRE OF PROPHECY vs REAL FIRE is supported by many verses and themes (Dt05-21). There are other Biblical supports for this idea but this will suffice for now.*10 *2 Also echoed in Rashi Lv07-07b (OFFERING PRIEST means PRIESTS WHO COULD OFFER) *3 Thus the request to kill the Jews is seen as a WISH (BROAD interpretation)not as something real *4 That Bilam didnt know what his donkey knew is interpreted literally. That he claimed to know Gods thoughts is considered a LIE(Broad, non- literal interpretation).
*10 It does not detract from the greatness of the miracle of revelation that the FIRE means FIRE OF PROPHECY. For Judaism does not view Gods greatness in His ability to make a mountain smoke with Fire. Rather Judaism views Gods greatness in His ability to make people burn with Spiritual Prophecy |
