SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
The FORMATTING rule seeks to explain Rashis based on
the FORMATTING of the Biblical text. FORMATTING techniques
in modern writing include use of bold, italics, underline,
bullets, paragraph indentation and similar items. The Bible
indicated FORMATTING using its own techniques: For example
- the Bible indicates bold, italics, underline thru REPETITION
- the Bible indicates bulleting, thru REPEATING keywords
The Bible can also indicate formatting thru meaning without
any formal structure.

Today we examine the FORMAT of a Biblical paragraph. This
FORMAT is indicated by meaning and not by any special
words. The FORMAT implies certain inferences.

The Biblical paragraph, Dt23-01:09, has the following
structure. This Biblical paragraph indicates a number
of instances where marriage is prohibited. Even if the
party's convert and even if they are established for
several generations there are still restrictions on whom
they can marry. Here is the paragraph.
-----------------------------------------------------------
WHO DONT WHOM #Generations WHY
------------- ------- ----------------- ------------ ------
any person TAKE his father's wife
and person UNCOVER his fathers wings
cut-crushed COME into Congregation
cut-spill COME into Congregation
illegitimate COME into Congregation Even 10th
Amon/Moabites COME into Congregation Even 10th Bilam
EDOMITES COME into Congregation At 3rd OK Brother
Egyptians COME into Congregation At 3rd OK Aliens
----------------------------------------------------------
1a(Repetition) 3a 4a Dont marry 9a

Based on the above structure Rashi makes 3 observations

TAKE-UNCOVER-COME (Dt23-03a Dt23-04a)
-------------------------------------
Rashi first observes that the CONTEXT and STRUCTURE
clearly imply that the verbs used---TAKE--UNCOVER--COME--
all mean TO MARRY. There are in fact other Biblical
verses supporting this inference but the inference from
CONTEXT indicated above suffices

TAKE vs COME (Dt23-01a)
-----------------------
Rashi contrasts COME (the typical term) with TAKE(used once)
- A person CAN Marry an Egyptian but is NOT ALLOWED to
- A person CAN'T marry his fathers wife and is NOT ALLOWED TO
In other words a person who say gave a ring and performed
a ceremony with his father's wife would not have effectuated
a change in her status (eg she does not need a divorce)

EVEN 10th NO vs OK AT 3rd (Dt23-09a)
------------------------------------
- The Egyptians and Edomites were only guilty of murder
- The Moabites also tried to seduce us and get us to sin
Hence
- the Moabites are PERMANANTLY punished (No marriage allowed)
- The Egyptians are PARTIALLY punished (Till 3rd generation)

LIST107r below summarizes this argument.

SUCCINCT SUMMARY:
-----------------
One of Rashis 10 major goals is to illustrate complex
geometric designs or algebraic complications. This is
called the Rashi method of SPREADSHEETS, since
SPREADSHEETS are one method of clarifying a complex
relationship. The SPREADSHEET method can refer to
any illustration of a verse that clarifies it.

EXAMPLE Dt21-17a
----------------
Dt21-17a states that the 1st-born
----------------------------------
the 1st born child inherits DOUBLE
----------------------------------

A numerical ALGORITHM for explaining double
is presented by Rashi. First we present the
algorithm for equal inheritance.

If All inherit equally
----------------------
Father has 3 boys
Father has $120
If All inherit equally Each boy inherits 120/3=$40
---------------------- ----------------------------------------

If Eldest gets double
---------------------- ----------------------------------------
Create fictitious child Father has 4 boys: 3 Real+1 fictitious
All inherit equally Each boy receives 120/4=$30
Eldest gets double Eldest gets his $30+$30 of fictitioius=$60
Remaining children Get 120/4 = 30*1
---------------------- ----------------------------------------

It APPEARS that formula is
- Eldest gets - 120/(3+1) x 2
- Others get - 120/(3+1)
Eldest then has double of other children

As shown in LIST690n below which summarizes this argument,
this is not exactly true. An exotic example from the
Rambam shows the necessity of using the method in the table.

EXAMPLE Dt23-12
---------------
The text of Dt23-12 states
-------------------------------------
And it will be that as evening comes
he washes his body in water and
when sunset comes he will be pure
-------------------------------------

There are two LOGICALLY EQUIVALENT ways of
reading this verse

METHOD 1
-------------------------------------
IF (he washes before sunset AND waits till after sunset)
THEN (He is PURE)*10
-------------------------------------

METHOD 2
-------------------------------------
IF (He washes before sunset THEN
IF (He waits till sunset THEN
(He is pure)))*10
-------------------------------------

The equivalence of these two methods is known as
the EXPORT-IMPORT law of LOGIC. So Rashi simply
clarifies requirements here.

COMMENTS
*1 So it APPEARS that formula is
- Eldest gets - 120/(3+1) x 2
- Others get - 120/(3+1)
Eldest then has double of other children

But Rambam gives an unusual case
- 1 ordinary boy
- 1 eldest
- 1 Hidden-sex child
The Hidden-sex child
- has a right to inherit
- does not have a right to intefer with eldest share
This creates some complicated arithmetic which follows
the outline above (Rambam: Inheritance Chapter 2)

IF (He waits till sunset THEN

COMMENTS
*1 Many people are familiar with the concept of the
FORMULA PLUG IN. That is a problem is solved by a
formula which you plug into.

But some problems intrinsically cannot (initally)
be solved by a formula. Instead you have to
formulate the problem algebraically and solve;only
then do you have the formula.

In other words these problems are solved by
the EQUATION vs the FORMULA

Thus the statement that the eldest gets double
suggests the following model.

- Suppose the are B brothers
- Suppose 1 of them is eldest
- The Fathers total assets are T (Total)

- Let A be the amount each brother inherits
We have no formula for A

- Then each of the B-1 brothers obtains A
- The eldest obtains double, 2A.
- Together this exhausts the Fathers estate, T

Hence we have (B-1)A + 2A = (B+1)A = T

This gives rise to the formula A = T / (B+1)

An example is a father with 100,000 and 4 children
- T=100,000
- B=4
- So each child take T/(B+1) = 100000/5 = 20,000
- Eldest takes 2*20000=40000
- Other 3 take 20000
- Total distribution =3*20000+40000=100000

See Rambam Inheritance Chapter 2

*2
Rashi gives a clarifying example to the verse GOD FORGIVES HER
--------------------------------------------------------------
- the women vowed to become a nazarite
- the husband annuled her vow
- but the husband did not tell her about the annulment
- the women then violated her vow
-
- In such a case God forgives the women (despite her
intending to commit a sin) because of the unknown
annulment of her husband
-
- We conclude that sin is an attribute of ACTION,not INTENT
