SUCCINT SUMMARY: ---------------- One of Rashis 10 main goals is the explanation of grammar similar to the explanations we find in modern textbooks. We call this the Rashi rule of GRAMMAR. In todays posting we deal with the grammatical rules governing DEVELOPMENT in paragraphs and chapters: Given a paragraph or chapter THEME, what types of sentences can exist in that paragraph or chapter and what are their relations to the central theme? We call this the rashi subrule of CONSECUTIVE PARAGRAPHS. Rashi knew 4 means of relating consecutive sentences or consecutive paragraphs in a paragraph or chapter: - CAUSE - CONTRAST - ENABLEMENT - UNIFYING THEME. Today we study the CONTRAST and CAUSAL submethods. EXAMPLE Gn41-48a ---------------- Gn41-48 states -------------------------------------------------- Joseph harvest the food of the seven years of plenty; He stored food in the city; THE FOOD OF THE FIELDS OF EACH CITY HE PLACED IN IT -------------------------------------------------- Rashi relates the CAPPED phrase to the first sentences of the verse using the concept of CAUSE and ENABLEMENT -------------------------------------------- Each city had its own way of preserving food (For example using natural nutrients from the fields) Hence the comment HE PLACED THE FOOD OF THE FIELDS IN EACH CITY is perceived an ENABLING the first sentence that Joseph HARVESTED THE FOOD OF THE SEVEN YEARS OF PLENTY The next example is a peach of a Rashi since Rashi uses two equally valid principles to arrive at two equally valid interpretations. EXAMPLE Gn41-44 --------------- The text of Gn41-44 states as follows -------------------------------------------- Pharoh said to Joseph -(a) I am Pharoh -(b) Without your permission no one will do anything -------------------------------------------- Rashi presents two possible connections between sentence (a) and (b). INTERPRETATION 1 ---------------- Sentence (a) is the CAUSE of sentence (b). That is SINCE I am Pharoh and ruler therefore I have the authority to make you chief economic officer of Egypt with absolute power INTERPRETATION 2 ---------------- Sentence (a) is CONTRASTIVE to sentence (b). That is: Although you have supreme power over Egypt you are only the VICE KING while I am the King Note: Although Gn41-44 by itself seems to support interpretation 1, nevertheless, Rashi cites Gn41-40 to support interpretation 2 ------------------------------------------ Pharoh tells Joseph I have given you power over all of Egypt; My throne however will surpass you ------------------------------------------ Thus both interpretations are reasonable. LIST061b below presents several Rashis exhibiting CONTRAST between verses. LIST061a below presents other paragraph sequences with a CAUSAL connection.

*1 Rashi not only connects 2 paragraphs. He also connects all Biblical paragraphs in this chapter. See footnote *10 for further details *2 Dt28 gives a long list of curses if the Jews violate the commandments. Dt29-12 says "You are all STANDING before God today" In other words despite the curses for disobediance you are still here before God(The implication being that no matter how angry God gets he will not destroy you) A further support for this theme can come from the General-particular-General form Dt28 GENERAL: Curses for disobediance Dt29-12 PARTICULAR: You are standing here before God Dt29-19 GENERAL: Curses for disobediance Thus the General-Particular-General form shows that Gods curses still allow us to "Stand before him"--in other words they are educative curses not punitive. *3 In other words (always) "Observe the Sabbaths" DESPITE a request to the contrary "By your parents" This can happen if eg your parents ask you to desecrate the Sabbath. You must observe the Sabbath even if your parents request to the contrary. And this can be generalized to all Torah laws(that they take precedence over your parents request) *4 Wear Tzitzith DESPITE the fact that they may have Shaatnez Wool and linen together (In the priestly garments made of Linen the Tzitzith were made of wool--thus the commandment of Tzitzith OVERRIDES the prohibtion of wearing wool and linen) *5 More specifically Rashi (Dt10-12a) states --------------------------------------------- Despite the 5 rebellions that the Jews did against God, nevertheless, God still loves the Jews. In fact Dt10-12 states that all the Jews need do to earn this love is to revere God --------------------------------------------- *6 Rashis point is that Jacob did not ask Esauv ---------------------------- Past me and leave me behind ---------------------------- Rather Jacob suggested contrast ------------------------------------------------ - I must go at a gentle pace - you go at a normal pace ------------------------------------------------ A logical consequence of this contrast is that Esauv would pass Jacob and leave him behind. *7 The full Biblical text shows two rounds of dialogs between Moses and Joseph The Biblical text states as follows ---------------------------------------------------- Gn42-09 1 JOE: You are Spies Gn42-10:11 1 BROHTERS: NO(Contrast)--We are simple people Gn42-12 2 JOE: NO(Contrast) you are spies Gn42-13 2 BROTHERS: We are 12 sons;we came for food ---------------------------------------------------- *8 Gn47-25b and Gn47-25a both deal with the contrast of offer vs Thank you. *9 Rashi makes a point of the contrast ---------------------------------------- Even though he was going to die after the war nevertheless he was eager to perform the war --------------------------------------------
*10 On a superficial level Rashi seems to be connecting 2 verses. Avoid idolatry DESPITE your being a slave to a non jew (who encourages its violation). Do not think "I will worship idols now and when I am free I will go back to believing in God" On a profound level Rashi sees a unifying theme to this whole chapter. The chapter encourages observing the shimitah laws which encourage abstaining from agriculture once every 7 years so that people can devote themselves to God and study. If one violates these laws he is progressively punished. Here is the sequence of punishments {LIST} {Paragraphs in BEHAR} ------------------------------------------------------- VERSE LAW ------------ ------------------------------------------ Lv25-01:12 Observe the 7 and 50 year Land sabbaticals Lv25-13:24 If not you will have to sell your MOVABLES Lv25-25:28 If not you will have to sell your LAND Lv25-29:34 If not you will have to sell your HOUSE Lv25-35:38 If not you will have to LOAN Lv25-39:46 If not you will have to become a SLAVE Lv25-47:54 If not you'll become a NONJEWISH SLAVE Lv26-01:03 If not you'll be tempted to IDOLATRY --------------------------------------------------------- Thus Rashi does not merely teach juxtaposition of verses but he also teaches juxtaposition of ALL paragraphs in the chapter. *11 Rashi comments ------------------------------------------------------ The verse CLEARLY contrasts HUNTER vs SIMPLE and FIELDS vs TENTS. Thus the SITTING IN TENTS spoken about here is not e.g. the tents of hunters but rather the tents of scholars (or charity givers) ------------------------------------------------------ I have added the explanatory words [or charity givers] to show that Rashi's point is one of CONTRAST not one of IDENTIFICATION. Rashi literally says ------------------------------------- TENTS refers to the tents of Shaym alluded to in the verse Gn09-27 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - God will give beauty to Yefeth and Yefeth will dwell in the TENTS OF SHAYM - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ------------------------------------- Presumably these are tents of either scholars or tents of charity givers. Rashi's main point is not the identification of WHOSE tents Jacob dwells in but rather the TYPES of tents that Jacob dwells in-- charity or learning tents vs hunter tents. *12 Rashi cites Gn41-40 to support this interpretation ------------------------------------------------- Pharoh said to Joseph; I give you power over all Egypt But my throne shall surpass your power ------------------------------------------------- |

*1 Thus "whoever see the humiliating Adulterous wife rite" will be so shocked that he will abstain from wine Similarly "Judah advised his brothers to sell Joseph" and so when they regretted it they blaimed him and he had to "separate from them." Similarly "Sarah died" from the shock that "Abraham offered Isaac." *2 In other words because the snake saw Adam and Eve naked therefore he became Jealous and wanted Adam killed so he could marry Eve. ALthough this sounds a bit wild there is strong supporting evidence. Gn04-01 uses the past perfect form And Adam HAD BEEN FAMILIAR with his wife & they had a child" So the sequence of chapters is Adam was lonely God makes Eve Adam and Eve are naked ------------------------"Snake tempts Eve" Adam has a child with Eve Thus the sequence of chapters (Naked--->child) is clearly interrupted by the Snake story. *3 As explained above Rashi sees these two views as complementary - First they drank wine and got drunk - While drunk they thought it permissable to offer sacrifices which should not be offered Hence they died for both crimes *4 Rashi explains the Causal connection - when the masses see that God EVEN kills the righteous for sins - then they are aware how they must also observe Gods commandments - This leads to more honor for God *5 So GOOD NEWS facilitates/causes SMOOTH TRAVEL(Rashi) *6 The full sequence of chapters is as follows -------------------------------------------- - Gn31 God orders Jacob to return to his fathers house - Gn32 But Jacob is afraid of Being with Brother Esauv - Gn33 Jacob journeys instead to Succoth - Gn34 Dinah gets raped - Gn35 God tells Jacob to return to BethEl ------------------------------------------- Rashi notes that ----------------------------- If Jacob had IMMEDIATELY fulfilled the order of Travelling to his fathers house he wouldnt have stayed in Succoth and his Daughter would not have gotten raped. ------------------------------ Thus Rashi sees a CAUSAL connection between the chapters. Dinah was raped because Jacob did not IMMEDIATELY fulfill the prophetic order. Note Rashi expresses the same theme ------------------------------------------------- Because he delayed doing the prophecy immediately therefore he was punished that certain bad occurrences happened to him ------------------------------------------------- Rashi expresses this same theme on Gn35-22a where we find that Reuven inteferred with his fathers marital life. *7 Rashi can be better understood with the EXPORT-IMPORT LAW of logic. The EXPORT-IMPORT law states that ---------------------------------------------------- IF [it rains] then if [I go out] THEN [I will get wet] ---------------------------------------------------- has the same meaning as ---------------------------------------------------- IF [it rains] and [I go out] THEN [I will get wet] ---------------------------------------------------- In other words Rashi identifies the two sentence forms - IF p THEN IF q THEN r - IF p & q THEN r This identification of NESTED CONDITIONALS with a CONJUNCTIVE HYPOTHESIS is called the EXPORT-IMPORT law. The actual Biblical text reads --------------------------------------------- The cattle is young AND they will be pushed one day AND they will die --------------------------------------------- Rashi simply points out (Using EXPORT-IMPORT) that we can interpret this as either --------------------------------------------- [IF] The cattle is young AND they will be pushed one day THEN they will die --------------------------------------------- or --------------------------------------------- IF The cattle is young IF they will be pushed one day THEN they will die --------------------------------------------- The above two translations use the well known Biblical principle that the Hebrew letter VAV can refer to any connective. *8 In other words he - 1st affirmed a vow of his wife - then annuled it (which he had no right to) - If she now sins (Because she was mislead into thinking the vow is annuled) - then HE bears the sin/punishment In other words BECAUSE he misled her he must pay for the sin. *9 The causality of these verses reinforce each other - Gn13-14 EXPLICITLY states that God promised Abe Israel AFTER Lot separated from him - Gn13-07 states that Abe and Lot faught WHILE the Canaanites were still in the land. So Rashi simply puts the two verses together - Lot felt HE COULD USE ISRAEL land even though the CANAANITES still owned it. Lot felt this way because the land was promised to Abraham eventually. By contrast Abraham refused to use the land UNTIL it was actually given to him.
*10 Rashi also states -------------------------------------------------- The HEAVY DRIVING (that God made the Egyptians do by removing chariot wheel) was a punishment for their making HEAVY their hearts -------------------------------------------------- I would strengthen these associations -------------------------------------------------- The HEAVY DRIVING is a punishment for the HEAVY work that the Egyptians placed on the Jews -------------------------------------------------- These comments of Rashi or me also indicate -- HEAVY DRIVING causes/facilitated -- Egyptians seeing that God was fighting for them Indeed: We know that one of the way God fights is to punish people according to what they have done (See Rashi on Ex18-11- Jethro said: Now I know that God is the true God because He returns to people what they have done) Hence this particular punishment (making the Egyptians drive heavy vs killing them) showed the Egyptians (CAUSED them to be aware) that God was fighting. *11 Hence the Rashi - Laban was interested in the possibility of becoming rich from Abraham. *12 Presumably each city had its own method of preserving food (e.g. use natural nutrients in the fields). Hence the second sentence of the verse HE STORED EACH CITIES FOOD NEAR IT is seen as ENABLING the first sentence HE STORED THE FOOD OF THE SEVEN YEARS |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 10 main goals is to give the meaning of words the same way the dictionary gives meaning. We call this the Rashi method of WORD MEANING. Rashi had a variety of vehicles to present meaning. Rashi frequently explained MULTI-WORD IDIOMS. An IDIOM occurs when 1 or more words form a NEW MEANING not directly equal to the meaning of the constituent words of the IDIOM. We call this the SUBRULE of NEW MEANINGS since the words acquire new meanings. In acquiring NEW MEANINGS Rashi frequently used a universal principle of all languages---METONOMY. METONOMY refers to the capacity to name an item by a related item (such as naming a PEOPLE, Americans, by the LAND they live in, America) EXAMPLE Gn41-44c ---------------- In Gn41-44 Pharoh appoints Joseph as Vice King. ----------------------------------------------- Pharoh said to Joseph I am Pharoh and without your permission NO ONE WILL LIFT THEIR HAND OR FOOT IN EGYPT ----------------------------------------------- Rashi explains the capped phrase ------------------------------------------- The CAPPED PHRASE means NO ONE CAN DO ANYTHING. This meaning is derived from the fact that typical activities are - BEARING ARMS (As in English) - or TRAVELLING CERTAIN PLACES These two activities are TYPICAL activities They are related to the ARM and FEET. Hence the idiom NO ONE WILL LIFT THEIR HAND OR FOOT ------------------------------------------- Here the naming of ACTIVITIES by TYPICAL ACTIVITIES by the ORGANS--hand and foot--connected with them, is an example of METONOMY. Finally LIST871d presents other IDIOMS based on metonomy

*1 Many examples in this list come from previous list in the metonomy series (LIST871a, LIST871b, LIST871c) *2 See LIST871e for 6 Rashis mentioning this HAND=DOMAIN theme *3 See LIST871f for verses where NSA means GIFT *4 Rashi citing the Midrash Rabbah states ------------------------------------- Your violence is something you VIOLATED from Esauv (You are killing like Esauv) ------------------------------------- But I see no reason to see this Midrash as the PRIMARY simple meaning of the verse. The PRIMARY meaning of the verse is that Shimon and Levi were criminals The Midrash is simply adding a pun to this observation. *5 See LIST871g for some examples *6 This is a common metonomy that occurs in English (eg America-Americans etc). Rashi is cute here: He EXPLAINS the metonomy ---------------------------------------------- When the soldiers die at sea their loved ones back in Egypt also suffer and in effect are smitten by God ---------------------------------------------- Rashi does not contradict the metonomy--he simply shows why it is convenient to identify the LAND and PEOPLE. *7 The night was traditionally divided into three times of Guard duty. The GUARD DUTY near dawn was called the MORNING WATCH (Cf Ju07-19 for confirmation that there was a BEGINNING WATCH, MIDDLE WATCH and DAWN WATCH) *8 The phrases SEEK GOD, SEEK IN GOD, occur in several verses and denote SEEKING ADVICE OF GOD. Compare for example (1S09-09, 1K22-08 or even 2K01-03 (Seeking advice of idolatrous gods). For alternate meanings see note *10. *9 The exact verse text is -------------------------------------------------- You will have to remove the old grain for the new -------------------------------------------------- This means --------------------- You will have plenty --------------------- In other words removal of the OLD for the NEW is simply something RELATED to PLENTY. The main theme is plenty. Similarly the Biblical text ------------------------------------------------------ The threshing season will bump into the harvest season ------------------------------------------------------ means -------------------- you will have plenty -------------------- Again the fact that we are STILL threshing when the harvest comes is something RELATED to having plenty. The main point is that there is PLENTY.
*10 On Gn25-22e there is a delightful Ramban Rashi controversy Ramban points out that SEEK GOD can mean PRAYER. Rashi holds it means PROPHETIC ADVICE. I brought about a dozen verses which clearly show that - SEEK GOD can and does refer to PRAYER - SEEK GOD can and does refer to PROPHETIC ADVICE - SEEK GOD can and does refer to BOTH Prayer/Prophecy Hence I regard Ramban not as disagreeing with Rashi but rather as complementing him. For further details see http://www.Rashiyomi.com/gn25-22d.htm *11 Clearly the Hebrew YeeChad comes from the root CHAD which means SHARP. Rashi brings two opinions - It means HE SHARPED (Mirthed at a SHARP WORD) - It means HE TWINGED (Upset at PAINFUL news) But Radack brings STRONG support that CHAD means mirth. Indeed, in other verses, CHAD does mean MIRTH (As in eg Neh08-10 or P021-07). This controversy between Rashi and Radack can be resolved Grammatically. The grammatical form of VaYeeChad (Chirik, Patach) could come from either - INTENSE MODE of 1-2-Hey roots(Cheth-Daleth-Hey) or - PASSIVE MODE of 1-2-2 roots(Cheth-Daleth-Daleth) In the intense mode CHAD means MIRTH(Radack) But in the PASSIVE MODE it would correspond to RECEIVING (PASSIVE!) a SHARP twinge at hearing bad news. Hence the controversy is on the root and mode of the word. This explanation makes both viewpoints respectable since Rashi would concede that CHEDVAH which definitely comes from Cheth-Daleth-Hey means MIRTH; Rashi could still maintain that Yee-Chad means TWINGED since it comes from a different root Rashi also points out that the translation TWINGED would show that despite Jethros happiness he still felt sorry for the Egyptians thus showing the conflict between his past(non-jew) and future (friend of Jews) *12 AFTERNOON-LIGHT-OIL is an example of DOUBLE METONOMY See LIST871c for other examples. *13 Although Rashi comments on the phrase OIL-OLIVES the phrase does not occur in Dt28-02b. This is obviously a scribal error. (See sifsay Chachamim who "explains" why the Rashi comments differ in the two verses. My point of view is that Rashi is stating the same thing and through a scribal error the Rashi was erroneously repeated in Dt28-02b. *14 The Hebrew root used is Nun-Pay-Lamed. One naiive translation is FALL. But EVEN if we translate this way we have Rashi reading ------------------------------------------------- RASHI: She FELL AT SIGHT OF HIM--this means ----- She Fell in love with him at first sight ------------------------------------------------- But Rashi goes deeper. Most people falling in love do not fall down. Rather they feel dizzy and perhaps sway. Rashi (as does the Radack) points out that -------------------------------------------------- Nun-Pay-Lamed has a basic meaning of FALL. However it can mean ANY RELATED meaning (METONOMY!). Radack brings as examples - sway - being secondary - military swoop on a camp - to barge in on guests -------------------------------------------------- Many other examples are given. For this reason we have simply translated the Rashi as saying that SWAY AT SIGHT = LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT. |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 10 main methods is the explanation of meaning the same way a dictionary explains meaning. We call this the WORD MEANING method. Rashi will sometimes explain IDIOMS. An IDIOM is a collection of words, which together means something different than its component parts. Thus the IDIOM endows NEW MEANING to the collection of words. Very often the IDIOMATIC meaning is closely related to the individual words. We call this the NEW MEANING submethod of the WORD MEANING method. EXAMPLE Gn46-30a ---------------- Gn46-30 states ----------------------------- Jacob said to Joseph - - - - - - - - - - - - - - If I could just die this time - - - - - - - - - - - - - - now that I have seen you alive ----------------------------- Rashi (paraphrased) --------------------------------------- The phrase - - - - - - - - - - - - - - If I could just die this time - - - - - - - - - - - - - - is an interjection indicating how happy Jacob was to see Joseph. It is as if he had nothing else to live for and his life was complete. --------------------------------------- Two comments of note can be made on this Rashi They may be found in the footnotes. *1 Rashi, Lv26-17h points out that the phrase ------------- PLACE MY FACE ------------- means -------------- FULL ATTENTION -------------- whether - for good, to reward - for bad, to punish. *2 NOTE: The Hebrew word HEAD can mean both - BEGINNING - TOP However in this verse - the HEAD OF THE CLIFF contrasts with - the VALLEY in MOAB Hence HEAD means TOP *3 A MOUTH LOTTERY refers to a lottery where you stick your hand in and select an item WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO SEE THE ITEMS (In an open-box lottery you can see what you are picking even though you see backs of cards. In a MOUTH LOTTERY the box is covered except for a small MOUTH). The MOUTH LOTTERY is more secure and fairer. Hence the Rashi The name MOUTH LOTTERY is because the box has only a small mouth preventing you from seeing what is inside. --------------------------------------------------- MOUTH LOTTERY means that the LOTTERY speaks and says this belongs to so and so --------------------------------------------------- Of course, Rashi did not believe that LOTTERIES speak. Rather Rashi refers to the SECURITY and FAIRNESS of the lottery. In other words - MOUTH LOTTERY refers to a small MOUTH on LOTTERY box (not to a physical voice on the box) - Since the MOUTH LOTTERY is secure it is AS IF it screams and points to a correct fair choice *4 Rashi is NOT explaining the meaning of the INDIVIDUAL WORDS - GOOD - PROPER Indeed, GOOD can mean SOCIALLY GOOD also (See Gn26-29) Therefore we have interpreted this Rashi as an example of the IDIOM method. *5 These five examples show various idiomatic meanings of the INFINITIVE of the verb TO SAY: TO SAY can mean - TO SAY BACK: Request for response - TO SAY OVER: To Transmit - TO SAY OVER AND OVER: Rumor See LIST955m for a separate summary *6 Thus in Dt18-01 ------------------------------------- The PRIEST-LEVITES shall not inherit from the conquest of Israel ------------------------------------- the phrase PRIEST-LEVITES means PRIESTS OR LEVITES. Another occurrence of this phrase occurs in Dt17-18. In Dt17-09a Rashi does state ------------------------------------ The PRIESTS who are no longer Levites ------------------------------------ But I understand this to mean ------------------------------------ PRIESTS by itself means PRIESTS but not Levites while LEVITES by itself could mean LEVITES but not Priests-- PRIEST LEVITES means PRIESTS OR LEVITES*10 ------------------------------------- *7 Besides the fact that this sounds OK (WENT BY JOURNEYS= STAYED BY SAME HOTELS) the verse gives support --------------------------------------------- HE WENT BY HIS JOURNEYS...UNTIL HE RETURNED TO HIS ORIGINAL PLACE WHERE HE BUILT AN ALTAR --------------------------------------------- *8 In other words if - the King slept with Sarah and then - returned her to Abraham perhaps he "had enough of her" and just "wanted to play." But if he gives her a monetary gift then - it is recognized that a miracle happened and his return - is an apology for taking her. - Hence the money prevents people EYEING Sarah(looking at her as a 'rejected woman.' This is covered in two Rashi (Gn20-16a Gn20-16b) which are better understood as one Rashi.
*10 Dt17-09 states --------------------------------------- [If you have a legal question then] ask the PRIEST-LEVITES, the Judges of the day --------------------------------------- The law PREFERS that the great Sanhedrin court in Jerusalem consist of PRIESTS. Levites are a second choice (and Israelite scholars are a third choice). So it appears that Rashi's comment -------------------------------------- Priests but not Levites -------------------------------------- is literal. But in Dt18-01 the prohibition of inheriting conquested Israelie land applies to EITHER Priests OR Levites. Similarly I would interprtet Dt17-09 to mean that EITHER Priests or Levites should preferably be on the Great Sanhedrin. That is the Biblical law. But Rabbinically---since Priests are more involved with the Temple there is a preference for Priests to be elected to the great court vs. Levites. This preference however is rooted in logic not in the verse. The IDIOM, PRIEST-LEVITES means PRIESTS or LEVITES as shown. *11 See LIST854c for further examples where LEFT OR RIGHT means a LITTLE bit. Rashi's actual language is --------------------------------------------------- If you dont consent to the marriage then I will either - go to the RIGHT (RASHI: The Ishmaelites) - or the LEFT (RASHI: Lot-ites) --------------------------------------------------- But in light of the examples in LIST854c this Rashi should not be taken literally! Rather Rashi should be interpreted broadly ---------------------------------------- My master prohibited marriages to Canaanites So if you dont consent to the marriage I will go to OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS OF ABRAHAM - such as ISHMAEL his son - or LOT his nephew ----------------------------------------- There is temptation to interpret -LEFT=LOT=weakness=(He committed incest with daughters) -RIGHT=STRENGTH=Ishmael However this SPECIFIC and FOCUSED interpretation of LEFT and RIGHT is unsupported by the many other examples in LIST854c below. Notice this use of LISTS. We are only justified in reading into Rashi what can be obtained from LISTS We are not justified in reading extra! Finally for those into Talmudic flavor note that - all the other verses speak about LEFT/RIGHT - Gn24-49 speaks about LEFT OR RIGHT (Hebrew Aleph-Vav) Perhaps then the ALEPH VAV gives extra emphasis But 2S02-19 shows that LEFT/RIGHT and LEFT OR RIGHT both mean the same thing---A LITTLE BIT *12 See LIST854m *13 Notice the terminal hey on the Hebrew word Aleph-Mem-Vav-Tauv-Hey--indicating the JUSSIVE mode (mode of hope). Thus the word is translated IF ONLY I COULD DIE Hence the proper way of interpreting this phrase is, similar to the English idiom, IF ONLY I COULD DIE (How happy I am) Rashi SUPPLEMENTS the explanation of this idiom by explaining it ------------------------------------ If I died now I would be comforted knowing I saw you ------------------------------------ Rashi cites the Targum. However the Targum's explanation should be seen as secondary to the primary explanation of the Rashi as an idiomatic expression with a given meaning (in other words you don't have to explain idioms to understand them-- the idiom means what it does because of usage) *14 Rashi gives a second explanation --------------------------------- If only I could die THIS TIME --------------------------------- Rashi states --------------------------------- I thought I would die in both this world and the next---but now I see I at most lost this world but not the next since your dreams have become prophecies and indications that I am destined to the next world --------------------------------- Rashi's second explanation does not CONTRADICT or REPLACE the first explanation. Rather Rashi's two explanations address TWO ISSUES in the verse ------------------------------- The Hebrew word Aleph-Mem-Vav- Tauv-Hey means IF ONLY I COULD DIE which is an idiom indicating HAPPYNESS ------------------------------- However the Bible modified the idiom ------------------------- IF ONLY I COULD DIE ------------------------- by adding the word THIS TIME ---------------------------- IF ONLY I COULD DIE THIS TIME ----------------------------- Rashi sees this modification of the idiom as indicating a subtle nuance -------------------------- I will only die THIS time that is ONCE but not twice -------------------------- alluding to the fact that Jacob thought he would go to hell for misleading Joseph but now he sees he at most lost this world but is destined to the next world |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 10 main goals is the explanation of meaning the same way a dictionary explains meaning. We call this the Rashi method of WORD MEANING. Rashi will sometimes explain meaning by providing a UNIFIED MEANING to a root. Today we examine the root Pey-Kuph-Daleth. (a) The root Pey-Kuph-Daleth has a fundamental meaning of APPOINTMENT/ASSIGNMENT and typically refers to an APPOINTMENT in an ORGANIZATIONAL structure. The typical organizational structure in ancient times was the ARMY and hence the word APPOINTED refers to an ARMY officer and the verb APPOINT refers to an ARMY assignment. (b) When Pey-Kuph-Daleth means COUNT it really means ACCOUNTED FOR IN THE ORGANIZATION. That is if you wanted to count a collection of objects you would use the Hebrew root Samech-Pay-Resh---however if you are counting staff in an organization then you use the root Pay-Kuph-Daleth. (c) Hence the passive construction SO AND SO WAS NOT ACCOUNTED means so and so was not on their station. (d) Metaphorically a punishment of God is viewed as an ASSIGNMENT of the PUNISHMENT to a certain person. Similarly when God REWARDS somebody we metaphorically refer to God ASSIGNING that reward to that person. The typical English translation is e.g. ----------------------------------------- Gn21-01 God REMEMBERED Sarah as He promised ...she gave birth to a child ----------------------------------------- We however would prefer the UNIFIED meaning of ASSIGNMENT. We would consequently translate Gn21-01 ----------------------------------------- God ASSIGNED to Sarah the birth of a child as he promised ----------------------------------------- English translations sometimes use the word REVIEW as in GOD REVIEWS THE SINS OF ANCESTORS but again we prefer GOD ASSIGNS THE SINS OF ANCESTORS (AND THEIR PUNISHMENTS) TO.... (e) The noun form of ASSIGN, ASSIGNED, refers to a monetary object that say person A ASSIGNS to person B to watch (either gratuituously or for pay). Here again the word ASSIGNMENT connotes status within an organizational structure since although the object belongs to me nevertheless I ASSIGN it, but only for purposes of WATCHING, not ownership, to person B. Just as we can examine the meanings of Pay-Kuph-Daleth so too we can correlate these meanings with grammatical modes. THe root PKD has 8 meanings. THese meanings can vary depending upon the grammatical mode used and the context Here are some rules -- in the PASSIVE, PKD means MISSING -- in the ACTIVE with PREPOSITION ETH, PKD means REMEMBER -- in the ACTIVE with PREPOSITION AL, PKD means VISIT ON -- in the ACTIVE with no PREPOSITION, PKD means REVU -- in the CAUSATIVE, PKD means to APPOINT However if numbers are mentioned in the verse then even in the ACTIVE or CAUSATIVE, PKD can mean COUNTINGS REFERENCE --------- Previous postings on the root Pey-Kuph-Daleth occur at - http://www.Rashiyomi.com/h2n7.htm - http://www.Rashiyomi.com/nu01-50a.htm - http://www.Rashiyomi.com/nu31-48a.htm ACKNOWLEDGEMENT --------------- Yosi Zoimen pointed out to me 3 years ago that PKD - means APPOINT in the CAUSATIVE mode - means COUNT in the ACTIVE mode Actually a more thorough analysis shows that PKD - can mean REVU and VISIT SINS in the active mode Two exceptions to this rule are mentioned in the footnotes. LIST864d belows presents many examples illustrating use of the root Pey-Kuph-Daleth.

*1 In English translations we speak about - God REWARDING deeds - God PUNISHING deeds - God REVIEWING deeds In all these verses we could have equally said - God ASSIGNED punishment/rewards for peoples DEEDS*12 *2 The interactive seems to be used for the passive I expect there is some further nuance but cannot find it. *3 An additional point is that PKD only means COUNT in the context of ASSIGNMENT. That is we can translate PKD either as APPOINT or ASSIGN. Some typical verses would be -- ASSIGN the Jews of 20 and above -- all the ASSIGNMENTS that were ASSIGNED were so many For the exception Gn40-04a ------------------------------------------------ And Joseph was ASSIGNED to the same prison ward ------------------------------------------------ where ASSIGNMENT is given in the ACTIVE vs. the CAUSATIVE mode see footnote *10 below. *4 This is the primary meaning of Pay-Kuph-Daleth ASSIGNMENT = APPOINTMENT in an ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
*10 There are two apparent exceptions to the assertion that in the active mode PKD means REMEMBER/VISIT/COUNT. Gn40-04a ------------------------------------------------------ And the prison managers APPOINTED Joseph with them and he served them ------------------------------------------------------ However I would translate this verse as follows --------------------------------------------------- And the prison managers COUNTED Joseph with them (with the chef and wine butler) --------------------------------------------------- The point being that there are no APPOINTMENTS in prison. Rather every prisoner was ASSIGNED to a different quarter. Joseph was assigned (or counted) with the Kings servants (apparently because Joseph was respected for his good work for Potiphar) Isa34-16 ------------------------------------------------ ..all the birds will be on this desolate spot... none of them will be missing none of them will be MISSING ------------------------------------------------ The rule of thumb is that -- in the PASSIVE, PKD means MISSING -- in the ACTIVE, PKD means to COUNT But in Isa34-16, PKD seems to mean TO COUNT. And in fact the major rishonim--Rashi, Radack, Ibn Ezra --translate it this way. But this would be the only exception where PKD in the active has the passive meaning of missing!! Therefore I would translate the verse as ------------------------------------------------ ..all the birds will be on this desolate spot... none of them will be missing none of them will be (obsessively) COUNTING ------------------------------------------------ In other words, when something is missing you count to see if it is there. A mother bird who is worried about losing her birds will go into a counting routine. So the verse states - no bird will be missing - no bird will even have counting-anxiety about missing *11 Rashi makes two points - only those above 20 were punished since God does not punish people between 12/13 and 20 - The Levites were not punished But the fact that the Levites were not punished is not inferred from here. Rather it is inferred from the fact that - they did not sin among the spies (indeed there was no Levite representative) - they were not punished on account of the spy sin - they in general abstained from the sins of the Jewish people (Such as the Golden calf, the spies and the Moabite Prostitution) *12 The concept of VISITING SINS AGAINST PEOPLE occurs - in the ACTIVE (Ex32-34) - in the CAUSATIVE (Lv26-16a) Rashi resolves this by translating -------------------------------------- I will APPOINT their sins against them -------------------------------------- At any rate the ACTIVE tense - DOES use PKD to denote VISITING punishment - DOES not use PKD to denote APPOINTING an officer |
