SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 10 major goals is to explain grammar the same
way modern textbooks explain grammar. One goal of grammar
is to clarify the meanings and usage of SPECIAL WORDS. We call
this the Rashi METHOD/SUBMETHOD of GRAMMAR / SPECIAL CONNECTIVE
WORDS(ON,TO,FOR,...)

The word ALSO in Hebrew and English has 4 meanings:
LIST005k brings verses with all 3 uses of ALSO
(a) extra object,
(b) derived object
(c) similar relationship
(d) Contrast (EVEN THOUGH)

EXAMPLE Ex08-29a
----------------
Ex08-29 and the surrounding verses state
---------------------------------------
Pharoh said to Moses OK I will let you
go but please remove this plague...and Moses
prayed ...and the plague was removed...and
Pharoh hardened his heart this time ALSO
---------------------------------------

Rashi comments
--------------------------------------
The word ALSO is CONTRASTIVE
- EVEN THOUGH Pharoh promised to release the Jews
- NEVERTHELESS he hardened his heart this time ALSO
--------------------------------------

EXAMPLE Ex06-09c
----------------
Rashi Ex06-09c comments on Ex06-02:04 which states
--------------------------------------------------
God told Moses I am the GOD-OF-CREATION
- I appeared to the Patriarchs as the GOD-OF-MIGHT
- but my attribute of CREATION was not known to them
- BUT NEVERTHELESS(ALSO)[while I did not FULLY give
them Israel (God of CREATION)] I [partially] gave
them the land of their sojournings
--------------------------------------------------

Rashi elaborates
-------------------------------------------------
If I appeared as the God of creation I would
have completely given them Israel. However
I appeared as the God of Might signifying that
Israel must be acquired thru hard work. Hence
we have that
- Abraham DID acquire Chevron for burial but
only after paying $400
- Similarly Jacob DID acquire the field of
Schem after paying $100
- Similarly Isaac DID acquire wells but only
after the first few wells were stolen from
him
-------------------------------------------------

We see here that Rashi interprets ALSO as
CONTRASTIVE.
- ALthough God did not COMPLETELY give Israel
- Nevertheless he gave it PARTIALLY thru hard work

COMMENTS
*1 Here is the way to use this list. We use the first row

Verse Column
------------
First we look up the verse Ex19-22a AND ALSO THE PRIESTS
WILL SEPARATE.

Text Column
-----------
We see the text---- PRIESTS separate.

Also Column
-----------
This column indicates that ALSO includes the FIRSTBORN
(who functioned as priests).

So the verse is read as follows
--------------------------------------------
God told Moses: The Priests ALSO (besides the firstborn)
will separate
--------------------------------------------

In other words the word ALSO is interpreted to include
the FIRSTBORN besides the PRIEST. The FIRSTBORN are
EXTRA to the priest.

To make this easier to see I have CAPPED both FIRSTBORN
and PRIESTS.

*2 So here without the word ALSO I would say that God punishes
nations which subjugate us. With the word ALSO I say that God
both punishes the nation AND with 10 plagues AND with letting
the Jews out with wealth.

*3 God criticized Moses for wanting an IMMEDIATE fulfillment
of the prophecy that the Jews will be redeemed. God said
I ALSO gave prophecies to the Patriarchs (And they did
not demand immediate fulfillment)

*4 7:2--7 Kosher animals vs 2 non-kosher animals--
is only mentioned by the ANIMALS. The word ALSO
implies the 7:2 ratio was preserved by the birds ALSO.

*5 Just as when Sarah couldn't have children she gave her
husband(Abraham) her maid (Hagar) so too when Rachel
could have children she gave her husband her maid

*6 Laban had tricked Jacob into marrying Leah vs. Rachel.

*7 Jacob had tricked Isaac into blessing him. Isaac says
he is ALSO blessed. In other words, EVEN if he hadnt
tricked me he would still be blessed.

*8 The Non-jews complained about the lack of food in
the desert. The verse continues THEY RETURNED AND
COMPLAINED, ALSO THE JEWS. The word ALSO connotes
that the Jews complained with the same cynicism
as the non-jews.

*9 Gn21-27 confirms this since it states
------------------------------------------------
Who would have expected Sarah to NURSE CHILDREN
------------------------------------------------
The plural CHILDREN connotes that Sarah nursed
the children of several women at the birthday
party.

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 The three methods are
- ALSO connotes an EXTRA extraneous object
- ALSO connotes a DERIVED object
- ALSO connotes a SIMILAR RELATIONSHIP or method

See http://www.Rashiyomi.com/dt23-19c.htm
for a previous presentation of this list

*11 The argument is that if
- Esauv tries to Kill Jacob
- Jacob will defend himself and kill Esauv first
- But then Esauv-s followers will kill Jacob
- And Jacobs followers will kill Esauvs followers
- and the two groups of followers will fight

Rashi cites an obscure Talmudic passage from Sotah that
both Jacob and Esauv died on the same day---but this
Homily is clearly allegorical--furthermore the Talmud
refutes this and claims that they were buried on the
same day (But died on different days)

*12 Rashis point is as follows
- Nu04-02:03 (Census KEHATHITES)
- Nu04-22:23 (Census GERSHONITES)
- Nu04-29:30 (Census MERRARITES)
All three verse pairs require census but their language
differs slightly. Hence the word ALSO indicates that
the three tribes are all COUNTED the same way.

*13
Jo09 talks about how the Givonim fooled Joshua---
they dressed up and made believe they came from
a far-away place. The purpose of the deceipt was
to get Joshua to make a treaty with them. Joshua
honored his treaty but made the Givonim water
drawers and log cutters.

Jo09-04 states
----------------------------------------------
And they(The Givonim) ALSO behaved deceiptfully
and they came to Joshua....
----------------------------------------------

Rashi interprets the word ALSO to indicate that
similar acts of deceipt happened in the times of Moses.
Rashi states on Dt29-10a
---------------------------------------------
Dt29-10a speaks about the people standing
before God---from the WOOD CUTTERS to
the WATER DRAWERS. Just as Joshua made
the Givonim water drawers but kept the
treaty which they earned thru deceipt so
too other nations came in the time of
Moses (We don't know who), deceived Moses,
who made a treaty, honored it but made these
people WOOD CUTTERS and WATER DRAWERS.
----------------------------------------------

Rashi's inference is CONJECTURAL but reasonable
and based on the ALSO in Jo09-04 which indicates
that SOMEONE else did a similar thing (deceipt,
treaty and WOOD CUTTERS)

*14 Rashis point is as follows
Rashi Ex06-09c comments on Ex06-02:04 which states
--------------------------------------------------
God told Moses I am the GOD-OF-CREATION
- I appeared to the Patriarchs as the GOD-OF-MIGHT

SUCCINCT SUMMARY

One of Rashi's 10 main goals is to explain Grammar
the same way Hebrew textbooks explain Grammar.
One grammar method that overlaps with word
meaning is the NOUN-VERB-ADJ-TRANSFORMS method.
This method studies how words can change from
OBJECTS (noun) to ACTIVITIES (verbs) to ATTRIBUTES
(adjective).

EXAMPLE 1: Ex09-31c
-------------------
Ex09-31c
-------------------------------
The hail didn't hurt the wheat because
the wheat was SPRINGED
-------------------------------

Rashi explains
----------------------------------------------
The wheat was fully blossomed (Spring Like)
and hence the hail didn't destroy them

*14 Rashi (Gn33-14d Gn33-14e) analyzes the word FOOTPACE
as follows
- FEET describe objects (NOUNS)
- WALKING is the STANDARD ACTIVITY of the FEET(Verb)
- PACE is the SPEED of walking(Adverbial
description of HOW FAST the walk is taking place).

Note: PACE itself is a noun but it functions
adverbially as describing how fast the walk is.

*15 Technically
- The Hebrew root Aleph-Resh-Ceth means PATH
- PATH is an OBJECT (Noun)
- When made into an ATTRIBUTE (Adjective)
- Aleph-Resh-Ceth means PATH-PEOPLE--a CARAVAN

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
Rashi will very often take a verse whose
meaning is ALREADY understood and ADD a consequence
to the verse. We call this the SPREADSHEET
method since SPREADSHEETS are very often
used to derive consequences of otherwise
understood data. We also classify Rashis
as using the SPREADSHEET method when Rashi
gives COMPUTATIONAL or GEOMETRIC diagrams
to clarify the meaning of the verse.

EXAMPLE Ex07-28a
------------------
Ex07-28 states about the plague of frogs
-----------------------------------
And they will COME UP and come into your
house, in your bedroom, and your bed...
-----------------------------------

The verse is completely understandable.
Rashi is not really bothered by the
double verb COME UP and COME INTO. Rather
Rashi adds some explanatory comments to
the verb COME UP
-------------------------------------
The frogs are said to COME UP, since
they come up FROM THE RIVER onto land
-------------------------------------

There is nothing profound in this Rashi.
Rashi is not bothered by anything. He
is simply giving an added insight into the verse.

EXAMPLE Ex08-14a
----------------
Moses had just brought the plague of LICE.
Lice were coming out everywhere. Ex08-14 states
------------------------------------------
The Egyptian Magicians tried to bring
the LICE out but couldn't
------------------------------------------

Again: This verse is completely understood
But Rashi adds some spicey insight.

Just picture lice coming out of the grass.
You come by and say ABRA KADABRA and the
lice continue to come out. You then TAKE
CREDIT for the lice coming out EVEN THOUGH
they were coming out anyway. Hence the Rashi
--------------------------------------
The Egyptian magicians tried to bring
the LICE out FROM ELSEWHERE (So that
they could take credit for it) but could
not do so
--------------------------------------

Again: Rashi is simply adding explanatory
material to a verse that is understood.

EXAMPLE Ex08-14b
----------------
Ex08-14 states
---------------------------------
The Egyptian Magicians tried to
bring the LICE out but couldnt
---------------------------------

This verse is clear but Rashi explains
why they couldn't. I am adding some
further explanatory material to Rashi
--------------------------------------
There is an old controversy whether
WITCHCRAFT is real or not. I have solved
this problem in an unpublished article

- WITCHCRAFT does NOT affect the real world
Hence in some sense it is NOT REAL

- WITCHCRAFT takes effect by using HALLUCINATIONS

It causes the recipient to SENSE THINGS that
are not there. For example a WITCH may make
a person believe that he sees FLYING ELEPHANTS

- - The witch has NOT PRODUCED flying elephants
- - But the witch HAS PRODUCED AN HALLUCINATION

In this sense witchcraft is PSYCHOLOGICALLY REAL.

Using this distinction we can understand why
the Egypitan WITCHES (= HALLUCINATION CREATORS)
were able to CREATE FROGS but not LICE.

FROGS are big and it is easy to make people
hallucinate them. LICE is minute. Rashi
explains that it is difficult to make
people HALLUCINATE minute objects...for this
reason the Egyptian witches could not produce
the lice. (And hence they had to recognize
Moses as a prophet vs a WITCH)

COMMENTS
*1 Many people are familiar with the concept of the
FORMULA PLUG IN. That is a problem is solved by a
formula which you plug into.

But some problems intrinsically cannot (initally)
be solved by a formula. Instead you have to
formulate the problem algebraically and solve;only
then do you have the formula.

In other words these problems are solved by
the EQUATION vs the FORMULA

Thus the statement that the eldest gets double
suggests the following model.

- Suppose the are B brothers
- Suppose 1 of them is eldest
- The Fathers total assets are T (Total)

- Let A be the amount each brother inherits
We have no formula for A

- Then each of the B-1 brothers obtains A
- The eldest obtains double, 2A.
- Together this exhausts the Fathers estate, T

Hence we have (B-1)A + 2A = (B+1)A = T

This gives rise to the formula A = T / (B+1)

An example is a father with 100,000 and 4 children
- T=100,000
- B=4
- So each child take T/(B+1) = 100000/5 = 20,000
- Eldest takes 2*20000=40000
- Other 3 take 20000
- Total distribution =3*20000+40000=100000

See Rambam Inheritance Chapter 2

*2
Rashi gives a clarifying example to the verse GOD FORGIVES HER
--------------------------------------------------------------
- the women vowed to become a nazarite
- the husband annuled her vow
- but the husband did not tell her about the annulment
- the women then violated her vow
-
- In such a case God forgives the women (despite her
intending to commit a sin) because of the unknown
annulment of her husband
-
- We conclude that sin is an attribute of ACTION,not INTENT
--------------------------------------------------------------

*3 Recall that Pharoh ordered all male babys murdered.
Moses was not murdered when born but was kept
in hiding for 3 months. His mother put him in a box
floating on the Nile. When Pharoh's daughter found the
box Miryam, Moses sister, approached Pharoh's daughter
to ask if she wanted help from a Midwife.

If Miryam was a nobody this would have aroused suspicion
Why was she mysteriously appearing to offer help after
the baby was found.

Therefore Miryam was probably a professional midwife.
She could offer help without suspicion. Similarly
Yocheved must have been a midwife...she made her
living thru nursing and delivering so no body
would suspect her of being the mother.

This proof is not iron clad---but rather the
identification of Miryam and Yocheved as
midwives alleviates some of the "coincidences"
that happen in the story.

*4 The Egyptian magicians tried to bring
the LICE out FROM ELSEWHERE (So that
they could take credit for it) but could
not do so

*5
