SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 10 main goals is to give the meaning of words the same way the dictionary gives meaning. We call this the Rashi method of WORD MEANING. Rashi had a variety of vehicles to present meaning. Rashi frequently explained MULTI-WORD IDIOMS. An IDIOM occurs when 1 or more words form a NEW MEANING not directly equal to the meaning of the constituent words of the IDIOM. We call this the SUBRULE of NEW MEANINGS since the words acquire new meanings. In acquiring NEW MEANINGS Rashi frequently used a universal principle of all languages---METONOMY. METONOMY refers to the capacity to name an item by a related item (such as naming a PEOPLE, Americans, by the LAND they live in, America) EXAMPLE Ex10-05a ---------------- In Ex10-05a Moses tells Pharoh ----------------------------------------------- The locusts will cover the EYE of the earth ----------------------------------------------- Rashi explains the capped word EYE ------------------------- EYE means APPEARANCE ------------------------- Here Rashi uses the Metonomy principle--since EYE is related to APPEARANCE. Rashi would translate the verse ---------------------------------------- The locusts will cover the APPEARANCE of the Earth ---------------------------------------- Rashi's point is that the Locusts will not just COVER the earth..they will also change the earth's APPEARANCE..it will look different. EXAMPLE Ex12-05b ---------------- In Ex12-05b God commands Moses to tell the Jews to ----------------------------- take perfect male unblemished sheep THE SON OF A YEAR ----------------------------- Rashi explains the IDIOM, SON OF A YEAR ---------------------------------------- SON OF A YEAR means ONE YEAR OLD ----------------------------------------- Hence Rashi would interpret the verse as follows ----------------------------- take perfect male unblemished one year old sheep ----------------------------- Finally LIST871d presents these and other IDIOMS based on metonomy

*1 Many examples in this list come from previous list in the metonomy series (LIST871a, LIST871b, LIST871c) *2 See LIST871e for 6 Rashis mentioning this HAND=DOMAIN theme *3 See LIST871f for verses where NSA means GIFT *4 Rashi citing the Midrash Rabbah states ------------------------------------- Your violence is something you VIOLATED from Esauv (You are killing like Esauv) ------------------------------------- But I see no reason to see this Midrash as the PRIMARY simple meaning of the verse. The PRIMARY meaning of the verse is that Shimon and Levi were criminals The Midrash is simply adding a pun to this observation. *5 See LIST871g for some examples *6 This is a common metonomy that occurs in English (eg America-Americans etc). Rashi is cute here: He EXPLAINS the metonomy ---------------------------------------------- When the soldiers die at sea their loved ones back in Egypt also suffer and in effect are smitten by God ---------------------------------------------- Rashi does not contradict the metonomy--he simply shows why it is convenient to identify the LAND and PEOPLE. *7 The night was traditionally divided into three times of Guard duty. The GUARD DUTY near dawn was called the MORNING WATCH (Cf Ju07-19 for confirmation that there was a BEGINNING WATCH, MIDDLE WATCH and DAWN WATCH) *8 The phrases SEEK GOD, SEEK IN GOD, occur in several verses and denote SEEKING ADVICE OF GOD. Compare for example (1S09-09, 1K22-08 or even 2K01-03 (Seeking advice of idolatrous gods). For alternate meanings see note *10. *9 The exact verse text is -------------------------------------------------- You will have to remove the old grain for the new -------------------------------------------------- This means --------------------- You will have plenty --------------------- In other words removal of the OLD for the NEW is simply something RELATED to PLENTY. The main theme is plenty. Similarly the Biblical text ------------------------------------------------------ The threshing season will bump into the harvest season ------------------------------------------------------ means -------------------- you will have plenty -------------------- Again the fact that we are STILL threshing when the harvest comes is something RELATED to having plenty. The main point is that there is PLENTY.

*10 On Gn25-22e there is a delightful Ramban Rashi controversy Ramban points out that SEEK GOD can mean PRAYER. Rashi holds it means PROPHETIC ADVICE. I brought about a dozen verses which clearly show that - SEEK GOD can and does refer to PRAYER - SEEK GOD can and does refer to PROPHETIC ADVICE - SEEK GOD can and does refer to BOTH Prayer/Prophecy Hence I regard Ramban not as disagreeing with Rashi but rather as complementing him. For further details see http://www.Rashiyomi.com/gn25-22d.htm *11 Clearly the Hebrew YeeChad comes from the root CHAD which means SHARP. Rashi brings two opinions - It means HE SHARPED (Mirthed at a SHARP WORD) - It means HE TWINGED (Upset at PAINFUL news) But Radack brings STRONG support that CHAD means mirth. Indeed, in other verses, CHAD does mean MIRTH (As in eg Neh08-10 or P021-07). This controversy between Rashi and Radack can be resolved Grammatically. The grammatical form of VaYeeChad (Chirik, Patach) could come from either - INTENSE MODE of 1-2-Hey roots(Cheth-Daleth-Hey) or - PASSIVE MODE of 1-2-2 roots(Cheth-Daleth-Daleth) In the intense mode CHAD means MIRTH(Radack) But in the PASSIVE MODE it would correspond to RECEIVING (PASSIVE!) a SHARP twinge at hearing bad news. Hence the controversy is on the root and mode of the word. This explanation makes both viewpoints respectable since Rashi would concede that CHEDVAH which definitely comes from Cheth-Daleth-Hey means MIRTH; Rashi could still maintain that Yee-Chad means TWINGED since it comes from a different root Rashi also points out that the translation TWINGED would show that despite Jethros happiness he still felt sorry for the Egyptians thus showing the conflict between his past(non-jew) and future (friend of Jews) *12 AFTERNOON-LIGHT-OIL is an example of DOUBLE METONOMY See LIST871c for other examples. *13 Although Rashi comments on the phrase OIL-OLIVES the phrase does not occur in Dt28-02b. This is obviously a scribal error. (See sifsay Chachamim who "explains" why the Rashi comments differ in the two verses. My point of view is that Rashi is stating the same thing and through a scribal error the Rashi was erroneously repeated in Dt28-02b. *14 The Hebrew root used is Nun-Pay-Lamed. One naiive translation is FALL. But EVEN if we translate this way we have Rashi reading ------------------------------------------------- RASHI: She FELL AT SIGHT OF HIM--this means ----- She Fell in love with him at first sight ------------------------------------------------- But Rashi goes deeper. Most people falling in love do not fall down. Rather they feel dizzy and perhaps sway. Rashi (as does the Radack) points out that -------------------------------------------------- Nun-Pay-Lamed has a basic meaning of FALL. However it can mean ANY RELATED meaning (METONOMY!). Radack brings as examples - sway - being secondary - military swoop on a camp - to barge in on guests -------------------------------------------------- Many other examples are given. For this reason we have simply translated the Rashi as saying that SWAY AT SIGHT = LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT. *15 Certain IDIOMS represent NEW MEANING by - FORM (e.g. HEART of FIRE=MIDST of FIRE) - or FUNCTION (e.g. your MOUTH=your SPOKESMAN) See - LIST810b - LIST810c - LIST813a - LIST815a |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- A powerful but simple Rashi method is the CITATION or CROSS- REFERENCING of an OTHER VERSE for the purpose of adding FURTHER DETAILS to a verse we are studying. We call this the OTHER VERSE method. There are three submethods to the OTHER VERSE method. If the verse actually CITES or refers to an OTHER VERSE we call this the SUBMETHOD of CITATION. If the OTHER VERSE explains the meaning of some term in the first verse we call this the SUBMETHOD of MEANING. If the first verse does not cite an other verse and if no meaning is explained then we call this the SUBMETHOD of FURTHER DETAILS since the 2nd verse either confirms the first verse or typically adds FURTHER DETAILS to the first verse EXAMPLE 1: Ex12-01b ------------------------------------- Ex12-01 states ------------------------------------------- God spoke to Moses ... in the land of Egypt ------------------------------------------- Rashi cites an OTHER VERSE Ex09-29 ------------------------------------------ And Moses told Pharoh WHEN I LEAVE THE CITY I will pray for you (to remove the plague of Hail)--But...please don't tease us any more about leaving ------------------------------------------ Rashi explains and comments ---------------------------------------- Moses presumably WAITED TILL HE LEFT THE CITY to pray to God because the city was filled with idols and he didn't want to pray in the city--- We likewise infer that the laws told to Moses in Ex12-01 were told to him ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE CITY...that is the phrase IN THE LAND OF EGYPT should be interpreted to mean in the OUTSKIRTS OF THE CITIES ----------------------------------------- EXAMPLE 2 Ex12-14b ------------------ This example is slightly complicated But it illustrates the richness of the OTHER VERSE method ------------------------------------------------- - Ex12-06 describes the offering of the pascal lamb on the 14th of Nissan - Ex12-12:13 describes the smiting of the first born on that evening (the pre-eve of the 15th) The drama comes in Ex12-14 which states ------------------------------------------ THIS day is a MEMORIAL and you shall have a holiday ------------------------------------------ Which day is THIS day? Is it the DAY of the chapter-- 14 Nissan. Or perhaps it refers to the day following the smiting of the first born when they left Egypt. Rashi answers this inquiry by carefully citing OTHER VERSES. - Nu33-03 states ------------------------------------------ On the day after the Passover offering the Jews left Egypt ------------------------------------------ We conclude that the Jews left on the 15th. - Ex13-03 states --------------------------------------------- Make a MEMORIAL of this day when you leave Egypt --------------------------------------------- We conclude that the 15th is a Memorial day. Hence, concludes Rashi -------------------------------- When Ex12-14 states and THIS DAY SHALL BE A REMEMBRANCE then THIS DAY refers to the 15th --------------------------------- EXAMPLE 3 --------- Ex12-21 states ----------------------- Moses commanded...GRAB and TAKE sheep for your families and perform the Passover ----------------------- Rashi illumines the double verb GRAB and TAKE by an OTHER VERSE, Ex12-03:04 -------------------------------------------- (a) Tell the Jews to take sheep for their household (b) But if the household is too small then EACH PERSON AND THEIR NEIGHBOR will take a sheep -------------------------------------------- Hence the Rashi -------------------------------------------- GRAB and TAKE means - GRAB your own OR - TAKE/BUY with your neighbor -------------------------------------------- LIST210x presents other examples of verse pairs illuminating each other with further details

*1 Unlike other cases of ritual impurity the Lepor is - ostracized from all his friends - must declare himself impure and separate himself Hence he is like someone dead (that is like a dead body he is REPULSIVE)*10 *2 Verse Ex14-19 states -------------------------------------------- [The Jews had just exited Egypt; Egypt regretted letting them free and pursued them. The following text relates the pursuit] And the Angel of God, which went in FRONT of the Jewish camp, journeyed and went in BACK of them;[Similarly] the pillar of fire went from in front to the back -------------------------------------------- Rashi explains with an analogy: ----------------------------------------- A person and his father were walking in the forest. Suddenly they hear wild animals in back of them pursuing them. The father, who had been leading his son in front now goes in back so that the wild animals should bump into him first, not his son ----------------------------------------- In other words, Rashi sees Ex14-19 as providing a FURTHER DETAIL to the concept of GOD CARED FOR YOU LIKE A FATHER. God had fought for the Jews who were helpless like children. *3 Rashi does not cite Nu32-05:08 but instead explains ------------------------------------------- God wanted si15ers dead lest they influence their children into rebelling against God ------------------------------------------- *4 That is: Don't learn idolatry for purposes of practicing it. But it is permissable to learn idolatry for purposes of instructing people on what not to do and on the horrors of particular idolatries.*11 *5 You can SUPPLEMENT Rashi with ADDITIONAL reasons - Rashi emphasizes that because Jacob was fleeing he had no money - I would add that perhaps Jacob was saying ----------------------------------------- Look I stole blessings from Esauv So my mother, your sister, things I should intern by you to learn how to do such things since this is the way you operate ----------------------------------------- --------------------- LONGER FOOTNOTES --------------------- *10 Rashi gives an alternate argument ----------------------------------------------------- Both the LEPOR and DEAD transmit a status of ritual impurity to a person who merely walks into the same room with them ----------------------------------------------------- However we would summarize this Rashi argument as follows --------------------------------------------------------- Both the LEPOR and DEAD are considered REPULSIVE. Hence - merely being in the same room with them confers impurity - People AVOID both the LEPOR and DEAD BODY --------------------------------------------------------- Such an approach to Rashi is deeper and more satisfying and sheds light on the analogy. *11 Rashi's literal language is --------------------------------------------------- DON'T LEARN TO DO, but you can LEARN TO TEACH --------------------------------------------------- This statement is short, punchy and to the point. Furthermore the literal text of Dt18-09a is DON'T LEARN TO DO. Thus it appears that Rashi made his inference from the EXTRA phrase TO DO (DONT LEARN TO DO vs DONT LEARN). However the approach of this list is to explain Rashi inferences in terms of broad laws such as OTHER VERSES. In this list we shy away from inferences from 'extra phrases.' Since Dt12-30 clearly prohibits LEARNING/INQUIRING FOR PURPOSES OF PRACTICE we prefer this OTHER VERSE explanation Consequently, this Rashi is one of those PEACHES that illustrate our different approach to Rashi explanations. *12 Rashi gives a second explanation of the word BITTERED ---------------------------------------------------- Potiphar tried to seduce Joseph and when he refused they threw him in prison ---------------------------------------------------- However the continuation on Gn49-23 is ---------------------------- they fought among themselves ---------------------------- - This DOES apply to the brothers but - DOES not apply to Potiphar Hence I have taken the primary explanation of Rashi to refer to the brothers. *13 Rashi explains and comments ---------------------------------------- Moses presumably WAITED TILL HE LEFT THE CITY to pray to God because the city was filled with idols and he didn't want to pray in the city--- We likewise infer that the laws told to Moses in Ex12-01 were told to him ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE CITY...that is the phrase IN THE LAND OF EGYPT should be interpreted to mean in the OUTSKIRTS OF THE CITIES ----------------------------------------- *14 The whole story is as follows - Ex12-06 describes the offering of the pascal lamb on the 14th of Nissan - Ex12-12:13 describes the smiting of the first born on that evening (the pre-eve of the 15th) The drama comes in Ex12-14 which states ------------------------------------------ THIS day is a MEMORIAL and you shall have a holiday ------------------------------------------ Which day is THIS day? Hence, concludes Rashi -------------------------------- When Ex12-14 states and THIS DAY SHALL BE A REMEMBRANCE then THIS DAY refers to the 15th --------------------------------- |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Rashi will very often take a verse whose meaning is ALREADY understood and ADD a consequence to the verse. We call this the SPREADSHEET method since SPREADSHEETS are very often used to derive consequences of otherwise understood data. We also classify Rashis as using the SPREADSHEET method when Rashi gives COMPUTATIONAL or GEOMETRIC diagrams to clarify the meaning of the verse. EXAMPLE Ex10-11b ------------------ Ex10-09 spells out Moses request for the Jews to serve God. ----------------------------------- Moses said we will go -1- with our YOUNGSTERS -2- with our ELDERS -3- with our SONS -4- with our DAUGHTERS -5- with our SHEEP -6- with our CATTLE ----------------------------------- Moses spells out 6 items that will go to serve God. In Ex10-11 Pharoh denies this ------------------------------ Pharoh said - NOT SO - Only the MALE WARRIORS go ... ------------------------------ Rashi clarifies using a speadsheet ---------------------------------- The NOT SO does not negate items 1-6. Rather it negates items (1)(3)(4) but not (5)(6). In other words Pharoh allowed - (2) elders - (5) sheep - (6) cattle but not - (1) youngsters - (3) sons - (4) daughters ---------------------------------- LIST690a below presents other Rashis using the SPREADSHEET principle. *1 Many people are familiar with the concept of the FORMULA PLUG IN. That is a problem is solved by a formula which you plug into. But some problems intrinsically cannot (initally) be solved by a formula. Instead you have to formulate the problem algebraically and solve;only then do you have the formula. In other words these problems are solved by the EQUATION vs the FORMULA Thus the statement that the eldest gets double suggests the following model. - Suppose the are B brothers - Suppose 1 of them is eldest - The Fathers total assets are T (Total) - Let A be the amount each brother inherits We have no formula for A - Then each of the B-1 brothers obtains A - The eldest obtains double, 2A. - Together this exhausts the Fathers estate, T Hence we have (B-1)A + 2A = (B+1)A = T This gives rise to the formula A = T / (B+1) An example is a father with 100,000 and 4 children - T=100,000 - B=4 - So each child take T/(B+1) = 100000/5 = 20,000 - Eldest takes 2*20000=40000 - Other 3 take 20000 - Total distribution =3*20000+40000=100000 See Rambam Inheritance Chapter 2 *2 Rashi gives a clarifying example to the verse GOD FORGIVES HER -------------------------------------------------------------- - the women vowed to become a nazarite - the husband annuled her vow - but the husband did not tell her about the annulment - the women then violated her vow - - In such a case God forgives the women (despite her intending to commit a sin) because of the unknown annulment of her husband - - We conclude that sin is an attribute of ACTION,not INTENT -------------------------------------------------------------- *3 Recall that Pharoh ordered all male babys murdered. Moses was not murdered when born but was kept in hiding for 3 months. His mother put him in a box floating on the Nile. When Pharoh's daughter found the box Miryam, Moses sister, approached Pharoh's daughter to ask if she wanted help from a Midwife. If Miryam was a nobody this would have aroused suspicion Why was she mysteriously appearing to offer help after the baby was found. Therefore Miryam was probably a professional midwife. She could offer help without suspicion. Similarly Yocheved must have been a midwife...she made her living thru nursing and delivering so no body would suspect her of being the mother. This proof is not iron clad---but rather the identification of Miryam and Yocheved as midwives alleviates some of the "coincidences" that happen in the story. *4 The Egyptian magicians tried to bring the LICE out FROM ELSEWHERE (So that they could take credit for it) but could not do so *5 There is an old controversy whether WITCHCRAFT is real or not. I have solved this problem in an unpublished article - WITCHCRAFT does NOT affect the real world Hence in some sense it is NOT REAL - WITCHCRAFT takes effect by using HALLUCINATIONS It causes the recipient to SENSE THINGS that are not there. For example a WITCH may make a person believe that he sees FLYING ELEPHANTS - - The witch has NOT PRODUCED flying elephants - - But the witch HAS PRODUCED AN HALLUCINATION In this sense witchcraft is PSYCHOLOGICALLY REAL. Using this distinction we can understand why the Egypitan WITCHES (= HALLUCINATION CREATORS) were able to CREATE FROGS but not LICE. FROGS are big and it is easy to make people hallucinate them. LICE is minute. Rashi explains that it is difficult to make people HALLUCINATE minute objects...for this reason the Egyptian witches could not produce the lice. (And hence they had to recognize Moses as a prophet vs a WITCH) |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 10 main goals is to describe STYLE. We have introduced the idea that The GENERAL-DETAIL style is a PARAGRAPH style; the GENERAL THEME is stated at the beginning and then it is DEVELOPED with DETAILS. According to the Rabbi Ishmael STYLE rules, the GENERAL THEME meaning is EXHAUSTED and COMPLETELY EXPLAINED by the DETAILS presented. EXAMPLE 1: Ex12-14c ------------------- The biblical text at Ex12-14 states ------------------------------------ This day (Passover) will be a MEMORIAL And you will celebrate it -- [GENERAL THEME ]FOR GENERATIONS -- [DETAILS ] AN ETERNAL STATUTE ------------------------------------ Note the THEME-DETAIL structure. Hence the Rashi ------------------------------------------------ The commemorative holiday is a requirement for all generations (not just for the IMMEDIATE generations that went out of Egypt and PERSONALLY saw God's hand) ------------------------------------------------ Here we follow the Rabbi Ishmael Style rule that in a THEME-DETAIL paragraph the DETAIL sections defines the THEME of the paragraph. So in this passage the EXTENT of commemorazation is ETERNAL (not just for 1-2 Generations for the people who PERSONALLY saw the miracles). LIST490j below summarizes this argument
