SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Some Rashi comments deal with FORMATTING. Modern authors FORMAT using such techniques as BULLETS, PARAGRAPHING, BOLD, ITALICS and UNDERLINE. The Biblical Author achieved these effects but thru different means. For example a modern author might hilight distinct items using BULLETS. The Biblical Author hilights distinct items using REPEATING KEYWORDS. We call this the Rashi rule of FORMATTING with the Rashi subrule of KEYWORDS AS BULLETS EXAMPLE Ex14-04b states ------------------------- Ex14-04 states ----------------------------------------------------- And I will weigh [in war] - against Pharoh and - against his army and Egypt will know that I am God ----------------------------------------------------- The repeating keyword AGAINST creates a BULLET effect. - God will punish PHAROH who INSTIGATED the action - God will punish PHAROH'S ARMY who CARRIED OUT the action EXAMPLE Ex21-33a Ex21-33b ------------------------- Ex21-33 states ------------------------------------------ - - - WHEN A PERSON opens a[existing] pit - - - WHEN A PERSON digs [deeper] a [existing] pit -and he doesn't cover it -and a donkey or ox falls in -The owner of the pit must pay ------------------------------------------ Finally LIST120L summarizes the above bulleting. The repeating keyword WHEN A MAN creates a BULLETED STRUCTURE Hence the Rashi --------------------------- A person is liable on damages from a pit whether - he merely OPENED an already EXISTING pit OR - he merely DUG DEEPER an already EXISTING pit --------------------------- Rashi is justified in EMPHASIZING the nuances of OPEN vs DIG because of the bulleted structure. Finally LIST120m summarizes the above bulleting.

|
|||
*10 Notice how Rashi interprets both bullets as referring to actions on an EXISTING pit. Needless to say you can only OPEN an EXISTING pit. There are two ways to justify the Rashi assertion that the Biblical phrase DIGS A PIT refers to DIGGING DEEPER AN EXISTING PIT. Method 1 (Actual Rashi argument) -------------------------------- If OPENING an existing pit creates LIABILITY (That is, the OPENER not the original PIT DIGGER) is liable) then how much more so the CREATER OF A PIT. Therefore we interpret the phrase DIGGER OF A PIT to refer to someone who DIGS DEEPER AN EXISTING PIT (since it would be superfluous to refer it to someone who actually digs a whole pit) METHOD 2 (BULLET ARGUMENT) ----------------------------------- Recall the Rashi principle that repeating KEYWORDS are interpreted to create a BULLETED ATMOSPHERE. Now a collection of BULLETS - contrast each other - collectively exhaust/illustrate one topic Hence the two bullets (OPEN DIG) - contrast each other (OPEN a pit vs DIG one) - collectively exhaust/illustrate the topic of changing an EXISTING pit (either thru OPENING or DIGGING). In other words it would be stylistically wrong to interpret the two bullets as meaning - OPEN an already existing pit - CREATE a new pit since that would violate the bullet style. Both these methods have validity. At any rate..the main point of Rashi is that the bullets here (OPEN DIG) indicate to aspects of dealing with a pit. |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 5 main goals is to indicate paragraph structure. The modern author can indicate paragraph structure thru either - indentation or - white space: blank lines surrounding the paragraph. One method by which the Bible indicates paragraph structure is to use a THEME-DETAIL-THEME style--that is - a THEME sentence is stated, - followed by some DETAILS of that theme and concluding - with a repetition of the THEME sentence. Thus the opening and closing THEME sentence form brackets indicating a paragraph unit. Recall that in modern writing, the details of a paragraph develop the theme sentence of the paragraph. Since the THEME-DETAIL-THEME structure indicates a biblical paragraph, therefore the DETAILs are seen as the DEVELOPMENT of the paragraph We call this Rashi method the THEME-DETAIL-THEME or GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL submethod of the RABBI ISHMAEL STYLE method. The name RABBI ISHMAEL STYLE method reflects the fact that the THEME-DETAIL-THEME structure is mentioned among the 13 exegetical rules of Rabbi Ishmael. EXAMPLE Ex18-19:23 ------------------ Ex18-19:23 contains the advice that Jethro gave Moses. Notice the THEME-DETAIL-THEME structure -------------------------------------------- I will give you advice ----------------------- MAY GOD BE WITH YOU a) You obtain laws from God Bring laws to the nation Teach them the laws b) Select WORTHY people from nation Appoint them heads of 10,100,1000 c) They will judge SMALL cases And you judge BIG cases IF YOU DO THIS AND GOD COMMANDS ----------------------- Then the workload will be doable and the people will be in peace --------------------------------------------- The THEME-DETAIL-THEME structure motivates the Rashi comment -------------------------------- Part of Jethro's advice was that Moses should ask God to approve his advice. In other words Jethro's advice was subject to God's approval -------------------------------- LIST460w below summarizes this argument.

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- A variety of Biblical commandments use SYMBOLIC PUNS to remind either important situations or moral principles. However by gathering several examples together the force of the symbolic interpretation as something natural becomes more apparent. (For a full discussion of the rules governing symbolic interpretation visit http://www.Rashiyomi.com/gen-1.htm.) EXAMPLE 1 Nu21-09a ------------------ Moses made a SNAKE with COPPER color. The COPPER color symbolizes the SNAKE since in Hebrew SNAKE and COPPER come from the same root EXAMPLE 2 Gn06-14a ------------------ Noach made the ark from GOFER wood since in Hebrew GOFER and MOLTEN LAVA (GFRIT) have the same root The generation of the flood was punished with molten LAVA EXAMPLE 3 Ex20-23a ------------------ Steps (vs ramps) were prohibited in the temple because in Hebrew the word for FANTASIES comes from the same root as the word for steps (One should not FANTASIZE (use steps) in the Temple) EXAMPLE 4 Ex17-11a ------------------ Moses raised his hands during prayer to symbolize that the Jews should direct their thoughts upward in prayer EXAMPLE 5 Ex20-23b ------------------ The Bible prohibited embarassing stones with ones nakedness (How much more so one shouldnt embarass people) EXAMPLE 6 Lv20-15a ------------------ We execute animals who sleep with people to symbolize that adultery (with people) is a serious crime EXAMPLE 7 Dt12-02 ----------------- We are commanded to destroy idolatrous trees; how much more so should we destroy idolatrous people EXAMPLE 8 Ex20-22d ------------------ To remind us of the moral principle that we shouldn't display weapons before other humans (because it might frighten them) we symbolically abstain from using iron in construction of the altar (since we might 'symbolically upset' the altar). (Rashi further hilights the symbolism by pointing out that the altar brings PEACE while IRON=WEAPONS are destructive--the basic idea however is personification).

*1 Rashi notes that ------------------------------ Moses was COMMANDED to make a SNAKE image Moses ACTUALLY MADE a COPPER SNAKE ------------------------------ Rashi suggests that Moses added the COPPER-ness for a PUN effect. In Hebrew COPPER and SNAKE come from the same root (cf the English Copperhead snake). Hence the COPPER image would remind people of the snakes. *2 See http://www.Rashiyomi.com/ex20-23a.htm for Biblical references to verses where the root Ayin-Lamed-Hey means fantasies. For example Ez11-05 or possibly P120-01 (Songs of fantasies (about the distant future)) *3 When you pray you direct your thoughts UPWARDS |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- The FORMATTING rule seeks to explain Rashis based on the FORMATTING of the Biblical text. FORMATTING techniques in modern writing include use of bold, italics,underline, bullets, paragraph indentation and similar items. The Bible indicated FORMATTING using its own techniques: For example - the Bible indicates bold,italics, underline thru REPETITION - the Bible indicates bulleting, thru REPEATING keywords The Bible can also indicate formatting thru meaning without any formal structure. EXAMPLE Ex19-10:25 ------------------ Ex20-25 has the following structure --------------------------------------- God tells Moses A1a) Tell Jews to prepare for descent(No contact with women) B1a)Fence the mountain--anyone who comes to close will die C1) Moses goes down and prepares Jews for Gods descent A2a) God descends and speaks to Moses--all are fearful B2a) God tells Moses--GO DOWN;warn people against coming up B2b) Moses responds--You already warned them (in B1a) B2c) God responds: God responds;GO DOWN [WARN THEM 2nd TIME] B2d) only you and Aaron come back up--not even Priests C2) Moses goes down and tells them [NOT TO COME UP] --------------------------------------- CAPPED comments in brackets [] indicate Rashi comments that illuminate the flow of the text. Notice the naturality of these Rashi comments...they are obvious spontaneous fill-ins. Clearly these Rashi comments emanate from the overall paragraph structure which indicates a unity of the text. As indicated by us many times, our Rashi rule of PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE which we call FORMATTING is identical with the Rabbi Ishmael rule of INFERENCE FROM CONTEXT. LIST107w below summarizes this argument.
