SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 10 main methods is the explanation of meaning the same way a dictionary explains meaning. We call this the WORD MEANING method. ---------------------------------------------- Rashi had 10 vehicles to explain meaning. The SYNONYM submethod takes words with known meanings and shows the similarity and nuances in each term. ---------------------------------------------- EXAMPLE: Lv01-17a ----------------------------------------------------- Lv01-17a describes the BIRD UP ceremony ------------------------------------------ [The Priest] RIPS the bird but not completely... ------------------------------------------ Rashi ------------------------------------------ The Hebrew word used connotes RIPPING (with ones hand) not cutting ------------------------------------------ LIST955z presents other Rashis commenting on SYNONYMS

*1 Also Rashi Dt11-25b. It seems reasonable that - P-Ch-D comes from Poh-Chad - SHARP and would refer to e.g. getting GOOSE PIMPLES (Sharpnesses in skin) from fear - MoRaH comes from Y-R-A = vision = LONG TERM apprehension over the future.*10 *2 - YOREH seems to comes from HRH to make pregnant. It would look at the rain as ENABLING the seeds to grow - MALKOSH seesm to come from LKSH - TO THE HARD(KSH) GRAIN and would refer to a final softening rain before the produce. See LIST910i *11 *3 It is hard to absolutely prove that - A-V-H means FANTASIZE vs - Ch-M-D means DESIRE ACQUISITION The verses show that - A-V-H is an act of the HEART while - Ch-M-D is focused on ACQUIRING OBJECTS See LIST955h for further details (Also see Rashi Gn27-15a Gn03-06c Gn03-06d) *4 On Dt19-16a Rashi gives an example of REMOVED/FABRICATED Testimony--when eg witnesses testify to a murder in NY and other witnesses come stating that the 1st witnesses were with them in Chicago at the time of witnessing--thus the murder testimony is totally removed from the real word *5 Undoubtedly there is probably a subtle difference between ANIH/SFINH but it is not possible to determine this from verses. An interesting statistical note is the following - SFINH occurs ONCE in the Bible - ANIH occurs 3 dozen times in the Bible - But in Biblical times the frequencies were reversed Hence, Rashi, in explaining the more frequently occurring ANIH was responding to the rarity of this word IN HIS TIME *6 - GRASS can refer to MANY or SINGULAR grass - MEADOW only refers to a WHOLE MEADOW of GRASS *7 TWK verses Beth (CENTRALLY IN vs IN) explains several Rashis: Nu17-21a Gn02-09b Ex24-1a Lv24-10c Gn01-06b Nu35-34a See LIST955j *8 Hence - Ex28-28c TIGHTEN the AYFOD garment - P031-21 Save me from GANGS(people TIGHTELY together) - Is40-04 God will smooth the TIGHT mountains (Rashi explains that TIGHT MOUNTAINS are mountains close together with deep georges between them)*12
*10 The reader need NOT believe the above etymologies For frequently Rashi explains synonyms without reference to etymologies and even without reference to verses. However some of the above etymologies seem reasonable and may enrich our appreciation of the synonyms. *11 Rashi gives another etymology from the Aramaic. However in this list we advocate the 2nd explanation of Rashi over the 1st. Furthermore in this particular case the 2nd explanation comes internally from Hebrew while the 1st Rashi explanation INFERS usage from Aramaic but does not EXPLAIN it. *12 Rashi translates RKS as UNITE. I have examined the verses and think the nuances of TIGHTEN-which is a particular form of tightening is more precise Rashi and my analysis apparently override the RADACK who translates (from context) RKS as meaning HIGH. Compare - RAISE the AYFOD (By tightening it) - Save me from HAUGHTY people - God will smooth the HIGH mountains *13 Rashi brings several distinctions on the nuances between VOWS vs DONATIONS - VOWS are PERSONAL (eg I will bring...) - DONATIONS are OBJECT oriented (eg This material is to Tmpl) - VOWS come for OFFERINGS - DONATIONS come for TEMPLE repairs - VOWS come for personal EXPIATION - DONATIONS do not come personal EXPIATION Rashi in fact notes that the word FOR EXPIATION (Resh-Tzade-Hey) does occur in Lv22-23. However this is just an accident. The main Rashi point comes from the VOW:DONATION difference---in English also - VOW has personal connotation (I undertake..) while - DONATION has object connotation (this item goes to..) *14 See LIST854O *15 These 10 words for prayer describe 10 different situations to which man responds in prayer. For example you SCREAM IN PRAYER when you are pursued. You SEEK GRACE in Prayer when you want a favor you don't deserve. You CHAT in prayer when you wish to uplift your reminisces to a Godly level. *16 Rashi makes an additional point - Ex28-13 is a one sentence OVERVIEW of the construction the AYFOD-CHOSHEN while - Ex28-22:28 is a description of the DETAILED construction of the AYFOD-CHOSHEN Thus this paragraph has a GENERAL-DETAIL form. (Rashi further explains that FUTURE conjugations in the first sentence are INTERPRETED as future while in the rest of the paragraph they are INTERPRETED as COMMANDS) |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 10 main goals is the clarification of meaning the same way the dictionary clarifies meaning. Rashi will frequently comment on SPECIAL CONNECTIVE WORS such as IF, BECAUSE, PERHAPS. EXAMPLE:The letter PREFIX VAV ----------------------------- Most people erroneously translate the letter VAV as meaning AND. Actually the Hebrew letter VAV can mean ANY sentence connective such as - if - then - and - or EXAMPLE 1: Ex35-23a --------------------- In the following verse Rashi interprets the 6 VAV as meaning OR ---------------------------------------- And any person who had - Azure - OR royal red - OR worm red - OR flax - OR goat hair - OR Red died skins - OR unicorn skin brought it ---------------------------------------- EXAMPLE 2: Malbim ----------------- Malbim gave the following elegant rule for VAV meaning OR vs AND ---------------------------------- - IN A simple COMMAND it MEANS and ---------------------------------- Example 2a: Lv23-40 ------------------------------------ On the first day of Succoth take Ethrog AND hadasim AND Lulav AND ethrog ------------------------------------ ---------------------------------- - IN A simple prohibition it MEANS or ---------------------------------- Example 2b: Dt23-19 ------------------------------------ Do not bring sacrifices from - EITHER the sale of dogs - OR the payments to prostitutes ------------------------------------ --------------------------------------------- - In a COMPOUND sentence there is controversy --------------------------------------------- Example 2c: Ex21-12 ------------------------------------ There is a death penalty for wounding - father - VAV - mother ------------------------------------ Is the death penalty for wounding - BOTH parents - EITHER parent A brilliant Malbim traces several dozen Talmudic passages containing controversy between Rav Osiah and Rav Yonathan and shows that the controversy only applies to compound sentences. LIST005t summarizes these examples.

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 10 main goals was the resolution of contradictions. These contradictions typically arise from two verses stating contradictory things. We call this the RASHI RULE OF CONTRADICTION. Rashi had three methods to resolve contradiction. If the CONTRADICTION could be resolved by viewing the contradictory verses as two aspects of the same item then we employ the TWO ASPECTS method of resolution. If the CONTRADICTION could be resolved by viewing the contradictory verses as two stages of the same process then we employ the TWO STAGES submethod. Finally if the CONTRADICTION could be resolved by retranslating the verses using broader or more literal meanings then we use the BROAD-LITERAL submethod. EXAMPLE Lv02-03c ---------------- Verses Lv02-02:03 state ------------------------------------------ The MINCHAH FISTFUL will be offered on the ALTARS FIRE The MINCHAH REMAINS belong to the priests HOLIES FROM ALTAR FIRE ------------------------------------------- There is a modest CONTRADICTION here- - If the MINCHAH FISTFUL is offered on the ALTAR FIRE Then what REMAINS are given to the priests? - If the PRIESTS eat the remains of the minchah not offered then why say it is FROM the altar fire. Rashi resolves this CONTRADICTION by using the rules of BROAD-LITERAL interpretation. The word FROM, literally means FROM A PLACE. However more BROADLY the word FROM means FROM A POINT IN TIME Hence Rashi interprets the two verses as follows ----------------------------------------------- The MINCHAH fistful will be offered on the ALTAR FIRE. The MINCHAH REMAINS belong to the priests FROM THE TIME that the other part of the Minchah is offered on the Altar fire ----------------------------------------------- LIST520a below gives other examples of CONTRADICTORY verses resolved thru TWO ASPECTS EXAMPLE 2: Lv05-13c ------------------- Lv05-11 describes ------------------------------------- If he is too poor he brings 2 birds for a SIN OFFERING ------------------------------------- But then 2 verses later in Lv05-13 it states -------------------------------------------- The priest will atone...and IT WILL BE FOR THE PRIEST LIKE A MINCHAH OFFERING -------------------------------------------- We see the CONTRADICTION: Which is it? Is the offering a MINCHAH or SIN offering? Rashi resolves this using the TWO ASPECTS method of resolving CONTRADICTION ----------------------------------------- - The STATUS of the offering is a SIN OFFERING - but the EATING RIGHTS are identical to those of a MINCHAH offering ----------------------------------------- Note that SIN OFFERINGS were not eaten. But MINCHAH offerings - were eaten by the priests UNLESS - the Minchah OWNER was himself a priest(in such a case no one ate the MINCHAH) In short ALL MINCHAH laws apply. LIST510a below gives other examples of CONTRADICTORY verses resolved thru TWO ASPECTS

*1 See Lv26-03. Thus Lv26-03:06 explicitly states that when we observe, God will remove wild animals. Dt08-02 by contrast, explains that conquest of Israel will happen slowly FOR IF IT HAPPEEND QUICKLY WILD ANIMALS WOULD COME (because the Jews moral nature was not yet perfected and the protection of Lv26-03:06 does not yet apply) *11 *2 COARSE flour was used in cooking to wash the pot sides to clear it from rust producing agents and rotted food particles. *3 I should mention the Brilliant Malbim who points out to a repeated object denoting emphasis ----------------------------------------- She opened it and saw HIM -- a CHILD ----------------------------------------- Thus the child had a certain regality *12 *4 This distinction is explicitly mentioned in Ex01-10 Pharoh was concerned that the Jewish minority would align with an Egyptian enemy. Hence he killed the males. *13 *5 See Lv08-16:21 for Moses acting as a Priest. During this brief period Moses used the Temple Basin. *6 First we note that MONUMENTS (MCBA) were made of 1 stone. Compare the following verses - Gn31-45 Jacob took the STONE and made MONUMENT - Gn28-18 Jacob took the STONE and made Monument Next we note that God found the MONUMENT that Jacob made (and declared to be a house of God), God found this altar pleasing. ----------------------------------------------- - Gn31-13 I am the God of Beth El where you made a monument --[I am with you] Therefore leave this place ----------------------------------------------- Finally we compare the following 4 contradictory verses ------------------------------------------------ Ex20-21:22 You can make altars of EARTH, STONES Dt27-05 Make altar of stones when coming to Israel Dt16-22a Don't make MONUMENT Dt16-22b Don't make MONUMENT, hated by God Gn28-18 Jacob took the stone and made a MONUMENT ------------------------------------------------ In this discussion we treat ALTARS and MONUMENTS the same. The contradictory verses can be resolved as follows - ONE-STONE altars/monuments are - - prohibited to us and hated by God - - permitted to Patriarches and liked by God - MANY STONE altars/Monuments are permitted*14
*10 Rashis point is strengthened by the abrupt change of subject ----------------------------------------------- Nu04-04 This is the job of the KEHATHITES Nu04-05 The PRIESTS come and cover the articles ... Nu04-15 ..and AFTERWARDS the KEHATHITES come ----------------------------------------------- If one just reads Nu04-04 and Nu04-05 by themselves it appears as if the PRIESTS mentioned in Nu04-05 refer back to the KEHATHITES mentioned in Nu04-04 *11 Interesting Rashi cites a verse in Job rather than the explicit Lv26-03:06. Rashi also does not explicitly mention that he is using the rule of resolving 2 contradictory cases. But that IS what Rashi does. It seems rather straightforward to introduce Lv26-03:06. Rashi probably expected the reader to know this verse since it comes in the great REBUKE---Rashi complements this verses with complementary verses in Job *12 Rashis actual language is that ------------------------------------ She saw Gods presence with him ------------------------------------ I have tempered this a bit as follows --------------------------- She saw the childs regality --------------------------- I think Rashis point is to explain why she risked her life to save a Jewish child This child was different--he had a certain regality...why not raise him as an Egyptian He would fit in well with the Royal house *13 Rashi actually says ------------------------------------------ Pharohs astrologers said that the Jews have just had a male savior born. Pharoh therefore decreed the death of the male Jews ------------------------------------------ However the REAL driving force of Rashi is the contradictory verses and the resolution from an explicit verse. Rashi avails himself of OTHER VERSES which show that Pharoh always consulted with his astrologers (eg Ex08-12:15). Thus Rashi is simply dressing up the contradiction. The real point of Rashi is the contradiction and the distinction between the people(hated all) and the King. (concerned about security) *14 Rashi does not give a reason why 1-stone altars are prohibited but many-stone are ok. I would suggest that 1-stone altars are so to speak BLEMISHED altars-altars made on the rush. Throughout the offering literature blemished items are considered poor taste. The patriarchs however were busy converting people frequently. Hence, they made altars on the go (one stone altars) and this was liked by God. *15 PUBLICLY: He disagreed so as not to further inflame the brothers who hated Joseph PRIVATELY: He agreed because he believed in the dream *16 Ex25-01:03 states ----------------------------------- Command the Jews to take DONATIONS whoever wishes to DONATE. And these are the DONATIONS you should take ...gold SILVER and COPPER ----------------------------------- But Ex30-11:13 states ------------------------------------- When you make a CENSUS people should give HALF A SHEKEL of silver ------------------------------------- This is further spelled out at Ex38-25:28 -------------------------------------------- The silver from the half shekels was so much and so much and used to make the silver stands for the boards and the curtain hooks -------------------------------------------- We see the CONTRADICTION: Was the silver a VOLUNTARY donation or a REQUIRED TAX? Rashi answers by distinguishing TWO CASES of the silver ----------------------------------------------------- - There was a REQUIRED TAX of HALF SHEKEL used for the stands and curtain hooks - There was an ADDITIONAL VOLUNTARY TAX---the silver gathered was used to make silver utensils in the sanctuary ----------------------------------------------------- *17 The Minchah Eating rights are as follows - Sin offerings are never eaten by priests - Ordinary Minchahs are eaten by Priests - Minchahs with a Priest owner are not eaten In short all MINCHAH EATING laws apply. There is an ironic subtlety here. The verse says ------------------------------ It will to the PRIEST as a MINCHAH ------------------------------- Rashi literally says --------------------------------------------------- If a PRIEST offered it no one would eat it --------------------------------------------------- It thus APPEARS that Rashi is PUNNING on the word PRIEST--- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - It will be to a PRIEST OWNER like a MINCHAH - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - But this is not necessary. The verse simply means - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - It will be to the PRIEST [offerer] as a MINCHAH - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - This implies ---------------------------------- - If it is an ordinary Minchah the PRIEST OFFERER can eat it - If it is a PRIEST OWNED Minchah then no one eats it ---------------------------------- Thus Rashi was not PUNNING but rather emphasizing one extreme case of the simple meaning of the text. |

Lv10-02 | Lv10-05 | Died from FIRE=SPIRITUAL FIRE*1

*1 Hence the fire did not burn their clothes The idea that the FIRES mentioned in Dt05 or Ex20 was the FIRE OF PROPHECY vs REAL FIRE is supported by many verses and themes (Dt05-21). There are other Biblical supports for this idea but this will suffice for now.*10 *2 Also echoed in Rashi Lv07-07b (OFFERING PRIEST means PRIESTS WHO COULD OFFER) *3 Thus the request to kill the Jews is seen as a WISH (BROAD interpretation)not as something real *4 That Bilam didnt know what his donkey knew is interpreted literally. That he claimed to know Gods thoughts is considered a LIE(Broad, non- literal interpretation).
*10 It does not detract from the greatness of the miracle of revelation that the FIRE means FIRE OF PROPHECY. For Judaism does not view Gods greatness in His ability to make a mountain smoke with Fire. Rather Judaism views Gods greatness in His ability to make people burn with Spiritual Prophecy |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Rashi will very often take a verse whose meaning is ALREADY understood and ADD a consequence to the verse. We call this the SPREADSHEET method since SPREADSHEETS are very often used to derive consequences of otherwise understood data. We also classify Rashis as using the SPREADSHEET method when Rashi gives COMPUTATIONAL or GEOMETRIC diagrams to clarify the meaning of the verse. EXAMPLE: The 3 40 Day Ascents by Moses to Mount Sinai ----------------------------------------------------- A careful examination of the verses in LIST690s shows that Moses ascended Mount Sinai 3 times. A very rough summary is as follows 1st Tablets ----------- Verses: Dt09-09:11 and Ex24-18 Decalogue received on Shavuoth=Sivan 6 So Moses ascended from - Sivan 7-Sivan 30=23 days - +17 days Tamuz - ------------------------------ TOTAL 40 days 2nd Tablets ----------- Moses came down on Tamuz 18, - destroyed the Golden calf - and punished sinners and - reascended the next day on Tamuz 19 The computation of 40 days is as follows - Tamuz 19-Tamuz 29=11 days - Av 1-29 29 days --------------------------- TOTAL 40 days The verses indicating this reascent to pray for the Jews forgiveness is Dt09-25:29, Ex32-30 3rd Tablets ----------- The reascent for the 3rd tablets is mentioned in Dt10-01:05 and Ex34-27:29 - Av 30--------------- 1 day - Elul has 29 days - Tishray to YomKippur10 days ----------------------------- TOTAL 40 days LIST690a below presents other Rashis using the SPREADSHEET principle. LIST690s summarizes the above argument.

*1 These verses just mention an ascent without mentioning an explicit number. However between the Dt and Ex verses the number 40 is mentioned at least once for each ascent. *2 Dates are computed as follows Sivan----30 So Sivan 7-Sivan 30=23 days+17 days in Tamuz=40 Tamuz----29 So Tamuz 19-Tamuz 29=11+29 Av days=40 days Av-------30 So Av 30-Av 30=1 day+29 Elul+10 Tisray=40 days Elul-----29 Tisray---10 (Yom Kippur) Note--Moses came down with first tablets on 17th or 18th He spent a day destroying the Golden Calf and punishing sinners and then returned to God. |

*1 Many people are familiar with the concept of the FORMULA PLUG IN. That is a problem is solved by a formula which you plug into. But some problems intrinsically cannot (initally) be solved by a formula. Instead you have to formulate the problem algebraically and solve;only then do you have the formula. In other words these problems are solved by the EQUATION vs the FORMULA Thus the statement that the eldest gets double suggests the following model. - Suppose the are B brothers - Suppose 1 of them is eldest - The Fathers total assets are T (Total) - Let A be the amount each brother inherits We have no formula for A - Then each of the B-1 brothers obtains A - The eldest obtains double, 2A. - Together this exhausts the Fathers estate, T Hence we have (B-1)A + 2A = (B+1)A = T This gives rise to the formula A = T / (B+1) An example is a father with 100,000 and 4 children - T=100,000 - B=4 - So each child take T/(B+1) = 100000/5 = 20,000 - Eldest takes 2*20000=40000 - Other 3 take 20000 - Total distribution =3*20000+40000=100000 See Rambam Inheritance Chapter 2 *2 Rashi gives a clarifying example to the verse GOD FORGIVES HER -------------------------------------------------------------- - the women vowed to become a nazarite - the husband annuled her vow - but the husband did not tell her about the annulment - the women then violated her vow - - In such a case God forgives the women (despite her intending to commit a sin) because of the unknown annulment of her husband - - We conclude that sin is an attribute of ACTION,not INTENT -------------------------------------------------------------- *3 Recall that Pharoh ordered all male babys murdered. Moses was not murdered when born but was kept in hiding for 3 months. His mother put him in a box floating on the Nile. When Pharoh's daughter found the box Miryam, Moses sister, approached Pharoh's daughter to ask if she wanted help from a Midwife. If Miryam was a nobody this would have aroused suspicion Why was she mysteriously appearing to offer help after the baby was found. Therefore Miryam was probably a professional midwife. She could offer help without suspicion. Similarly Yocheved must have been a midwife...she made her living thru nursing and delivering so no body would suspect her of being the mother. This proof is not iron clad---but rather the identification of Miryam and Yocheved as midwives alleviates some of the "coincidences" that happen in the story. *4 The Egyptian magicians tried to bring the LICE out FROM ELSEWHERE (So that they could take credit for it) but could not do so *5 There is an old controversy whether WITCHCRAFT is real or not. I have solved this problem in an unpublished article - WITCHCRAFT does NOT affect the real world Hence in some sense it is NOT REAL - WITCHCRAFT takes effect by using HALLUCINATIONS It causes the recipient to SENSE THINGS that are not there. For example a WITCH may make a person believe that he sees FLYING ELEPHANTS - - The witch has NOT PRODUCED flying elephants - - But the witch HAS PRODUCED AN HALLUCINATION In this sense witchcraft is PSYCHOLOGICALLY REAL. Using this distinction we can understand why the Egypitan WITCHES (= HALLUCINATION CREATORS) were able to CREATE FROGS but not LICE. FROGS are big and it is easy to make people hallucinate them. LICE is minute. Rashi explains that it is difficult to make people HALLUCINATE minute objects...for this reason the Egyptian witches could not produce the lice. (And hence they had to recognize Moses as a prophet vs a WITCH) |
