SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- The FORMATTING rule seeks to explain Rashis based on the FORMATTING of the Biblical text. FORMATTING techniques in modern writing include use of bold, italics, underline, bullets, paragraph indentation and similar items. The Bible indicated FORMATTING using its own techniques: For example - the Bible indicates bold, italics, underline thru REPETITION - the Bible indicates bulleting, thru REPEATING keywords The Bible can also indicate formatting thru meaning without any formal structure. EXAMPLE 1:Lv15-32a Lv15-32b Lv15-33a ------------------------------------- The Biblical chapter Lv15 has the following clear paragraph structure: ---------------------------------------------------------- # VERSE TOPIC OF PARAGRAPH -- -------------- ---------------------------------------- A: Lv15-01:15 man with a discharge(the Zav) B: Lv15-16:18 man with a seminal discharge C: Lv15-19:24 woman with blood flow(Niddah) D: Lv15-25:31 woman with excessive bloodflow discharge (Zavah) ---------------------------------------------------------- The end of the chapter has a SUMMARY in verses Lv15-32:33 Rashi correlates the summary with the paragraph items above. Here Rashi uses the PARAGRAPH FORMAT RULE. --------------------------------------------------- SUMMARY STATEMENT CORRESPONDS TO ITEM IN VERSES ------------------ -------------------- ----------- Laws of discharge General topic Lv15 Seminal Discharge B Lv15-16:18 Menstrual flows C Lv15-19:24 Excessive flows A,D Lv15-01:15 Sleep with above B,C Lv15-16:24 NOTE: Sleeping is mentioned in TWO paragraphs and hence the Bible singles it out at the end because of the hybrid relationship. --------------------------------------------------- LIST107y below summarizes this Rashi comment. EXAMPLE 2: Lv15-05a Lv15-06a Lv15-09a ------------------------------------- The Biblical chapter Lv15-01:10 has the following structure. --------------------------------------------------------------- SECTION VERSES CONTENT ---------- ---------- ----------------------------------------- SECTION A: Lv15-01:03 Overview: People who have discharges ---------- ---------- ----------------------------------------- SECTION B1 Lv15-04:05 Transfers impurity by SLEEPING on bed SECTION B2 Lv15-06 Transfers impurity by SITTING on chair SECTION B3 Lv15-07 Transfers impurity by being TOUCHED SECTION B4 Lv15-08 Transfers impurity by SPITTING SECTION B5 Lv15-09:10 Transfers impurity by RIDING SECTION B6 Lv15-10 Transfers impurity by CARRYING SECTION B7 Lv15-11 Transfers impurity by TOUCHING ---------- ---------- ----------------------------------------- SECTION C: Lv15-13:15 Purification procedure --------------------------------------------------------------- The Rashi comments below use the fact that a BULLETED LIST of items is intended to be a LIST OF DISTINCT ITEMS. Rashi comments -------------------------------------------------------- SITTING TOUCHING and RIDING are distinct. For example if you SIT on a chair with multi-level covers you have not touched. Similarly you can RIDE an animal without SITTING -------------------------------------------------------- LIST107z belows summarizes this Rashi comment. Rashis other comment has to do with the difference between the SLEEPING/SITTING and OTHER items in the list above of METHODS OF TRANSFERRING UNCLEANESS(B items) ------------------------------------------------------- VERSE ACT of DISCHARGER Purification --------- -------------------------- ----------------- Lv15-07 Someone TOUCHES discharger Immerses in water Lv15-08 Discharger SPITS: Immerse in water --------- -------------------------- ----------------- Lv15-04:06 Discharger LIES/SITS Lv15-04:06 Someone else sits on seat Immerse in water ------------------------------------------------------- Rashi comments on the extra verse with the LIE/SIT -------------------------------------------------- In the other TRANSFER METHODS the discharger came in contact with a PERSON who then had to immerse in water. The contact could be through SPITTING or TOUCHING or other methods of TRANSFER. But in the LIEING and SITTING transfer methods the discharger confers impurity on an OBJECT--the seat or bed. A person touching the SEAT or BED is also impure. Thus SITTING and LIEING have greater EFFECT OF TRANSFER since they can transfer to OBJECTS as well as people --------------------------------------------------- Rashi's comment was derived from the lack of parallel in the list of items--the SITTER/LIER had extra comments which reflect extra laws. LIST108a below summarizes this Rashi comment. LIST107z below summarizes this argument. | ||
