SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashi's 10 major methods is the WORD MEANING method; Rashi explains the meaning of words the same way the dictionary explains meaning. Rashi had 10 methods to explain meaning. One of them is the UNIFIED MEANING method in which Rashi shows how disparate meanings of one root have an underlying unified meaning. EXAMPLE: Lv25-23b ----------------- The Hebrew root Tzade-Mem (CM) has the following meanings unified by the idea of TIGHTNESS ---------------------------------------------------- VERSE MEANING RELATION TO TIGHTNESS ---------- ------------ ---------------------------- Is58-05 Fast FEELING of stomach TIGHTNESS Ex17-03 Thirst FEELING of throat TIGHTNESS So04-01 Farhead TIGHT skin (no flesh) Lv25-35b Perm Sale TIGHT sale, no fluidity ---------------------------------------------------- Note the English metaphor FLUID sale vs the Hebrew metaphor TIGHT sale. LIST864i belows summarizes this argument. EXAMPLE: Nu07-03a ----------------- The Hebrew root Tzade-Beth (CB) has the following meanings unified by the idea of BLOWN UP/BLOATED ------------------------------------------------------- VERSE MEANING RELATING TO BLOWN UP ------------- ------------------ ---------------------- Nu05-21 Bloated belly BLOATED appearance Nu07-03a OverFilled wagon Appears BLOATED Jr03-19 Eagerly Desirable Overeaters BLOATS Nu01-20 Army Army+King=BLOATED King ------------------------------------------------------- There are some nuances here worth emphasizing - Rashi explains CB as COVERED wagons. I have emphasized COVERED OVERFILLED WAGONS since only an overfilled wagon looks BLOATED - The standard translation of Jr03-19 is DESIRABLE/PLEASANT I have translated it as EAGERLY DESIRABLE...like a tasty pastry that invites OVEREATING and BLOATEDNESS - The standard translation of Nu01-20 is ARMY or HOSTS. I would preferably translate it as the PROTECTIVE AGENTS A PERSON SURROUNDED BY PROTECTIVE AGENTS looks BLOATED LIST864j summarizes these arguments

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 10 main goals was the resolution of contradictions. These contradictions typically arise from two verses stating contradictory things. We call this the RASHI RULE OF CONTRADICTION. - If the CONTRADICTION could be resolved by viewing the contradictory verses as two aspects of the same item then we employ the TWO ASPECTS method of resolution. - If the CONTRADICTION could be resolved by viewing the contradictory verses as two stages of the same process then we employ the TWO STAGES submethod. - Finally if the CONTRADICTION could be resolved by retranslating the verses using broader or more literal meanings then we use the BROAD-LITERAL submethod. EXAMPLE Nu07-84a ----------------- Compare the CONTRADICTION in the following two verses ------------------------------------------- Nu07-84 These are the CONSECRATIONS ON DAY of Temple annointing - - - - gifts of.... Nu07-88 These are the CONSECRATION AFTER te temple annointing ------------------------------------------- We see the CONTRADICTION. Which is it? Did the consecration happen on or after the Temple annointing? Rashi resolves this CONTRADICTION using the method of TWO STAGES ------------------------------------------- - On the 1st of Nissan the Temple was annointed - AFTER the annointing ON THAT day they CONSECRATED ------------------------------------------- LIST530b summarizes the resolution of CONTRADICTION and brings other Rashis using the CONTRADICTION method.

*10 Rashi literally states --------------------------------------------------- Laban gave Leah to Jacob for the wedding night. But Jacob and Rachel had personal signs and Rachel gave these to Leah. So Jacob only fully became aware at morning that Leah was really Leah --------------------------------------------------- This Rashi has been interpreted to mean that - Jacob and Rachel had little contact during the 7 years! - Jacob had no memory of the women he was in love with! - Jacob needed special signs to remind him who he was with - Jacob did not know who he was with on his wedding night! Remarkable: Even the lowest rif-rafs know who they are with on a wedding night. I think a more palatable approach to this Rashi is the following: ------------------------------------------------------ Traditionally men are in interested in physical characteristics while women are interested in the person. The Bible EXPLICITLY states that Jacob loved Rachel because of her figure and good looks (No mention of personality!). As is well known men and women can flirt with each other by glances and smiles. Rachel quickly found out what Jacob liked and taught Leah how to flirt with him. Laban told Jacob at the BEGINNING of the 7 years that he couldn't marry the younger daughter before the older daughter. Jacob was at first relunctant But when Leah started flirting with him the way he liked he decided to marry Leah. However after the wedding night Leah 'had what she wanted' and had no reason to placate Jacob. She started acting herself. It was only at this point that Jacob realized he was double-crossed and not getting the physical flirtations he wanted from a wife. Laban simply reminded him of the deal they had made SEVEN YEARS AGO but offered him Rachel also ------------------------------------------------------- The above approach to Rashi makes 'sense.' It also has RELEVANCE. It is well known that INCIDENTS OF THE PATRIARCHS mirror EXPECTATIONS TO THE CHILDREN. No Jew really worries about being double crossed in whom he marries. But it is relevant to religious men to be aware that women play such games with them--Rachels will frequently help fellow women like Leah to catch men. Women think it silly that men are interested in physical attributes and not in personality. So this incident as interpreted above has extreme relevance to us. |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- A powerful but simple Rashi method is the CITATION or CROSS- REFERENCING of an OTHER VERSE for the purpose of adding FURTHER DETAILS to a verse we are studying. We call this the OTHER VERSE method. There are three submethods to the OTHER VERSE method. If the verse actually CITES or refers to an OTHER VERSE we call this the SUBMETHOD of CITATION. If the OTHER VERSE explains the meaning of some term in the first verse we call this the SUBMETHOD of MEANING. If the first verse does not cite an other verse and if no meaning is explained then we call this the SUBMETHOD of FURTHER DETAILS since the 2nd verse either confirms the first verse or typically adds FURTHER DETAILS to the first verse EXAMPLE 1: Lv25-08a ------------------- Verse Lv25-08 states ---------------------------------------------- And you shall count SEVEN SABBATHS OF YEARS to you, seven times seven years; and the space of the seven sabbaths of years shall be to you forty and nine years. ---------------------------------------------- Rashi clarifies the capped phrase ---------------------------------- SEVEN SABBATHS OF YEARS ---------------------------------- by citing an OTHER VERSE which gives further details. Lv25-01:04 states ------------------------------------------------- And the Lord spoke to Moses in Mount Sinai, saying, Speak to the people of Israel, and say to them, When you come into the land which I give you, then shall the land keep a sabbath to the Lord. Six years you shall sow your field, and six years you shall prune your vineyard, and gather in its fruit; But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest to the land, a sabbath for the Lord; you shall not sow your field, nor prune your vineyard. -------------------------------------------------- Rashi further cites Dt15-01:02 ------------------------------------------ At the end of every seven years you shall create a RELEASE-YEAR And this is the manner of the RELEASE-YEAR; Every creditor who lends anything to his neighbor shall release it; he shall not exact it of his neighbor, or of his brother; because it is called the Lord’s release. ------------------------------------------ In summary Rashi shows that the phrase SABBATH YEARS in Lv25-08 refers to both the - LOAN-RELEASE years which happen every 7 years - the LAND SABBATICAL years(when no agriculture is done) which also happens every 7 years. ------- | ----------------------- | --------- | ------------------
|

*1 There is a subtlety in this Rashi. Verse Ex23-24 states ------------------------------------------------ - Dont bow to THEIR(the nation's) gods - Dont worship THEM (the gods) - Rather demolish THEM (who?The nations?or their gods?) - break THEIR (the nation's) monument altars ------------------------------------------------ Rashi's point is indicated in the parenthetical comments The DEMOLISH command refers to DEMOLISH the IDOLS not DEMOLISH the NATIONS! *2 Actually Ex24-01:02 states ---------------------------------------- the rest of you bow from afar and Moses alone will go up without the nation ---------------------------------------- This almost totally parallels Ex20-18 which states ---------------------------------------- The nation stood afar and Moses approached the dark cloud where God was ---------------------------------------- *3 Rashi ALSO mentions the ORDINANCES of Shabbath, Noachides and Honoring ones parents. The MAIN driving force behind Rashi in interpreting Ex24-03 is the OTHER VERSE method. The OTHER VERSE method could also refer to Ex16-28:29 which mentions the Sabbath. I simply chose the MAIN OTHER VERSE Ex15-25 that also mentions ORDINANCES. *4 (Rashi)HUNT and AMBUSH are simply two good examples of PREMEDITATION. The Torah distinguishes the treatment of a PREMEDITATED murder from a NEGLIGENT murder. *5 Sifsay Chachamim cracks a joke on Ex29-29 -------------------------------------------- to ANNOINT (by oil) IN THEM (= the clothes) -------------------------------------------- Lv21-10 makes it clear that the OIL is poured on the PRIESTS HEAD. But, the WEARING of HIGH PRIEST CLOTHES is also a requirement for the HIGH PRIEST induction. Rashi further explains ----------------------------------------------- Annointing is RELATED to SOCIETAL APPOINTMENT and hence ANNOINT IN THE CLOTHES could easily be a pun--POUR OIL ON HEAD and GET APPOINTED by wearing the High Priest clothes ----------------------------------------------- *6 Lv07 states that the owners of Peace offerings eat the peace offerings. However Lv07-34 states that THE PRIEST RECEIVES THE WAIVED BREAST and THE RAISED SHOULDER. This illuminates the phrase in Ex29-28 ------------------------------------------ It is a statute FOR the priests FROM the Jews ------------------------------------------- That is, although the Jewish owners eat their sacrifice nevertheless part of it goes to the priests. Ex29-28 mentions that the GIFT IS A RAISING But Lv07-34 states that BOTH - the WAIVED BREAST - the RAISED SHOULDER are priestly gifts. Hence the RAISING in Ex29-28 refers to both the BREAST/SHOULDER. *7 Lv05-16 and Lv05-18 have almost identical words Hence we can use the ALIGNMENT WORD MEANING method also. However the OTHER VERSE method suffices here. *8 Both Ex39-30:31 and Ex28-36:37 speak about ----------------------------------------- The Tzitz is held by Azure threads; these Azure threads fold over the Turban ------------------------------------------ *9 Hence the Rashi ---------------------------------------- The princes brought their gifts IN THE SAME ORDER as their encampment order [We infer this because these two orders of the 12 tribes are identical leading us to infer that one was copied from the other]
|
||||
*10 Rashi brings further OTHER VERSES - Lv07-34 tells us that Priests eat BREASTS of all Peace offerings - Lv07-07:11 tells us that Priests eat REMAINS of all Minchah offerings Rashi further explains why a law which is known GENERALLY (Priests consume BREASTS and MINCHAH) has to be repeated for the CONSECRATION OFFERINGS. ------------------------------------------------ Since the CONSECRATION OFFERINGS were ONE TIME communal offerings with several differences from other offerings of the same type therefore the Bible had to explicitly reiterate that procedures traditionally done to these offerings were also done to the CONSECRATION OFFERINGS despite their unusual nature ------------------------------------------------ *11 Rashi also mentions the MINCHAH offering of Nachshon (Nu07-13) which was also brought on the same day as the consecration offerings when the temple was erected (Nu07-01). The details of how we know that the CONSECRATION offerings happened on the same day as the PRINCE OFFERINGS (Nu07) is discussed on http://www.Rashiyomi.com/lv09-01a.htm |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashi's goals is to explain the meaning of special connective words like THE, ALL, ALSO,BECAUSE IF,THEN, WHEN. These words exist in all languages. We call this the Rashi rule of SPECIAL CONNECTIVE WORDS. When Rashi uses this rule his goal is to explain ALL NUANCES OF THE CONNECTIVE WORD. EXAMPLE Nu07-89d ----------------- Verse Nu07-89 states ------------------------------ When Moses came to the Temple he heard THE voice MUSING to him... ------------------------------ The word THE in Hebrew like in English indicates a POINTING to something known. This KNOWN something might be in the immediate vicinity or distant. In this case the phrase THE VOICE refers to THE VOICE OF PROPHECY mentioned in Ez01-24 ---------------------------------------- and I heard the voice of the Kerubim's wings like the voice of the Almighty like oceans... ---------------------------------------- LIST007a summarizes this Rashi and brings other verses where THE points. Supplemental points are made in the footnotes.

*1 These verses refers to the 10 commandments mentioned immediately in the next chapter Dt04-06 and cross referencing the 10 commandments also mentioned in Ex20 *2 This refers to Ex27-04 a few verses earlier which describes THE RINGS *3 This refers to Ex28-13 a few verses earlier which describes the construction of these stones *4 This refers to Nu01-01:16 a few verses earlier which lists the people mentioned *5 This refers to Gods saving us, a theme which is mentioned in the very next verse *6 This refers to THE REBUKES mentioned in the next few chapters, Dt01 thru Dt13 *7 This refers to THE REBUKE SONG mentioned in the next chapter Dt32 This SONG is one of only 2 songs written in a special Biblical song format (with a special triangular use of Tabs). Note that by law you cannot write only a PART of the Torah on parchment. Hence this Biblical commandment to write the REBUKE SONG necessitates an interpretation to write the WHOLE TORAH! *8 This is a tricky verse. The simplest approach is to realize that the Hebrew word CHODESH can refer EITHER to (a) the new moon, (b) the first of the month or (c) the whole month (This point is made by RADACK in his book ROOTS). Hence we interpret the two occurences of CHODESH in this verse to have 2 different meanings! The verse is interpreted as follows: --------------------------------------------------------- This NEW-MOON will be for you (the sign) of a new month; This MONTH will be the first of the months of the year --------------------------------------------------------- Thus we learn 2 laws from this verse- (a) That the new month is established by a new moon (b) That Nissan-April is the first legal month. *9 The reference is to the copper altar mentioned in Ex27-01. Compare Ex27-01 vs Ex30-01 and notice how reference to the copper altar uses THE while reference to the Golden altar does not use THE. *10 This refers to either of the 2 OLAH offerings offered at Mount Sinai (Ex24-01:08 brought at the 10 commandments and Ex29-38:46 brought at the consecration of the priests) *11 This is probably the most difficult example in this list. But following the pattern in the other examples we seek a reference to TREES made for a TEMPLE. There is a clear reference in Gn21-33 that ABRAHAM PLANTED AN EYSHEL TREE AND CALLED THERE(Biblical language indicating making an altar) IN THE NAME OF GOD THE GOD OF THE WORLD. Thus it seems reasonable that since Abraham planted trees to make altars the other Patriarchs also followed this tradition. Hence the statement in Ex26-15 that we should take THE BOARDS refers to the boards from the trees planted by the Patriarchs. (Rashi (Ex25-05c) refers to the boards planted by JACOB But in light of the above analysis and the explicit verse in Gn21-33 we think it reasonable that all the Patriarchs planted trees for building altars. *12 Bilam refers to the SEVEN altars built by the patriarchs See LIST007b for details. *13 cf Ez01-24 ...like the VOICE OF OCEANS.... Rashi does make further points on this Rashi but they are derived from other words in the verse. For example the interactive MEM-DALETH-BETH-RESH refers to the fact that God did not speak to Moses directly but rather Moses HEARD GOD MUSING TO HIMSELF (That is the way God communicates). Nevertheless this MUSING was a BOLD BOOMING Voice. |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY: ----------------- One of Rashi's 10 major goals is the explanation of GRAMMAR the same way modern textbooks explain GRAMMAR. There are three major GRAMMAR submethods: (a) The goal of the ROOT submethod is to explain all conjugations and meanings of Biblical roots. Biblical roots are conjugated with letter prefixes and suffixes to indicate (i) tense (ii) person (iii) gender (iv) plurality (v) mode (vi) object (to whom the activity is done) and (vii) mood. Each of these conjugations has a specific meaning. Furthermore, these conjugations take on different forms for roots with weak letters. (b) The SENTENCE submethod deals with grammatical attributes of sentences such as (i) word arrangement (Verb Subject vs Subject Verb) (ii) sentence type (interrogative, command) (iii) compound sentences (iv) apposition and (v) paragraph / sentence development. (c) The MISCELLANEOUS grammatical methods deal with (i) agreement (in gender and plurality), (ii) the construct (iii) pronoun reference (iv) ellipsis (v) noun-verb transforms (e.g. to dust) (vi) special word usage(e.g. how to use numbers) (vii) suffix-prefixes (e.g. terminal HEY means towards). EXAMPLE Nu07-89b ---------------- Today we have numerous books listing the conjugations of ordinary and rare verbs. However such books were not available in Rashi's time. Hence one major function of Rashi is to provide his readership with basic conjugation rules. Here are some basic rules you can find in ANY modern Hebrew grammar book ----------------------------------------------- - Hebrew roots have 3 letters (Say X,Y,Z) - The roots can be CONJUGATED in different modes - The INTERACTIVE MODE (Hitpael) is normally indicated by the letter TAUV. For example - - - - - - - - - Mem-Tauv-X-Y-Z - - - - - - - - - indicates the PRESENT TENSE of the HITPAEL - If however the letter X is the Hebrew letter DALET then we omit the Tauv and DOT the X - - - - - - - - - Mem-Daleth(.)-Y-Z - - - - - - - - - - The INTERACTIVE form of the Hebrew root Daleth-Beth-Resh means - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - To Interactively speak; i.e. to muse to oneself - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ------------------------------------------------- Hence we have the following Rashi translation of Nu07-89 -------------------------------------------- When Moses came to the Temple to speak to God He heard the voice [of God] MUSING to Himself on the Kaporeth on the Temple Ark between the Kerubim [This is How] God spoke to him -------------------------------------------- Here Rashi translates the Hebrew root ----------------------- Mem-Daleth(.)-Beth-Resh ----------------------- as meaning ------- musing ------- LIST703j below summarizes these examples.

First Rashi points out that the HAFAL is the PASSIVE CAUSATIVE: That is, the Priest CAUSES the Goat to REMAIN *4 Rashi makes two additional points here: Second Rashi points out that the AZAZEL Goat remains alive UNTIL he is pushed off the cliff and dies (In other words Rashi negates the idea that the AZAZEL Goat is FIRST slaughtered and then the SLAUGHTERED Goat is thrown off the cliff--rather the Goat is kept alive until he dies by being thrown off the cliff). *5 Rashi had two points here a) The Hitpael form of the Hebrew root Daleth-Beth-Resh is conjugated without a Dagesh (Mem-Daleth(.)-Beth-Resh) This is a general conjugation rule whenever a root begins with a Daleth b) The Hitpael indicates INTERACTIVENESS The Hebrew root Daleth-Beth-Resh, means to TALK Hence the Hitpael of Daleth-Beth-Resh means to INTERACTIVELY TALK, To MUST to oneself. So Rashi explains that Moses heard God speak by God musing to onself. |
