SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Rashi will very often take a verse whose meaning is ALREADY understood and ADD a consequence to the verse. We call this the SPREADSHEET method since SPREADSHEETS are very often used to derive consequences of otherwise understood data. We also classify Rashis as using the SPREADSHEET method when Rashi gives COMPUTATIONAL or GEOMETRIC diagrams to clarify the meaning of the verse. EXAMPLE Ex10-11b ------------------ Ex26 and Ex27 give a detailed description of the Wilderness TEMPLE. We list here a collection of verses and items along with pictures. The issues to be resolved are - what are the dimensions (length width) - How do the curtains and beams interact (How much is covered / let free) LIST690a below presents other Rashis using the SPREADSHEET principle. LIST690s summarizes the above argument. EXAMPLE ------------------------------------------------- (A) South-North Wall--30' inside --------------------------------------- Ex26-18,20 North-South side=20 Beams Ex26-16 1 Beam = 10' Tall x 1.5' Wide Conjecture 1 Beam = 10' Tall x 1.5' Wide x 1' Deep SubTotal North side= 20 beams x 1.5' wide= 30 feet (B) Western Wall = 10' inside ------------------------------------- Ex26-22 WEST = 6 beams Ex26-23 WEST CORNERS=2 beams (1 per corner) Ex26-16 1 Beam = 10' Tall x 1.5' Wide (x 1' Deep) SubTotal WEST side=(6+2)beams x 1.5' Wide = 12' (C) PICTURE ------- NORTH OUTSIDE=1+30+1=32 =================|| 1' deep of beamNORTH 30' W || 10' E || WEST OUTSIDE=10+1+1=12' || S ||SOUTH 30' T || =================|| 1' deep of beam (D) OUTSIDE vs INSIDE ----------------- Conjecture Beams were 1' deep WEST=12' outside - 2' beam depth =10' inside NORTH=30' inside+ 2' beam depth =32 Note: Rashi cites a controversy but the above computations are the simplest and most natural and fit well with the verses(Rashi Ex26-05a) (E) TEMPLE CURTAINS ------------------- Ex26-01 TEMPLE = 10 Curtains Ex26-02 1 Curtain = 28 x 4 SubTotal TEMPLE=28 x 40 (4 x 10) (F) TENT CURTAINS (Went over Temple Curtains) --------------------------------------------- Ex26-07 1 tent = 11 Curtains Ex26-08 1 Tent Curtain = 30 x 4 Spreadseet TENT = 30 x 44 (4 x 11) (G) North South-Curtain covering of Temple ------------------------------------------------- Ex26-16 1 BEAM=10' Tall Recall from above TEMPLE CURTAIN=28' x 40' SubTotal 28' Temple Curtain= = 12' Western outside 8' (of 10') of Northern Height 8' (of 10') of Southern Height (Ex26-05a) So two cubits were exposed on North and south (H) North South-Curtain covering of Tent ------------------------------------------------- Recall from above TENT CURTAIN = 30' x 40' SubTotal 30' Tent Curtain = = 12' Western outside 9' (of 10') of Northern Height 9' (of 10') of Southern Height (Rashi: Ex26-13a Ex26-13b Ex26-13c) So TENT curtain (9') covered one foot more than TEMPLE curtain (8') and left one foot exposed of 10' height.(Rashi: Ex26-08a) Rashi notes that 'it is proper manners to cover what is precious--hence the Tent curtain was 9' so as to cover the more precious Temple curtain which was 8'. Rashi conjectures that the one uncovered cubit of the 10 cubits was the cubit of the SILVER STAND which he assumes is 1 cubit tall (So the silver which is metal unlike the wood did not need the protection of tents) (I) East West Curtain covering of Temple ----------------------------------------- 31' on top (30' of North Wall + 1' depth of West) 9' of Height of West Wall - - - - - - - - - - - - - 40' Of Temple Curtains (TEMPLE CURTAINS=28' x 40') (J) East West Curtain covering of Temple ----------------------------------------- 32' on top (30' of north wall+1' West Depth+1' East depth) 10' on Western side (Height of wall)(Rashi:Ex26-12a Ex26-12b) 2' on eastern side (Rashi: Ex26-09a Ex26-09b) - - - - - - - - - - 44' of TENT curtains.(TENT CURTAINS=30'x44')

*1 There is controversy on this but this is main approach (Ex26-05a) *2 The TENT curtains were a second layer of curtains over the TEMPLE curtains (Ex26-07) The TEMPLE curtains in turn were over the TEMPLE BEAM structure *3 Ex26-05a So the TEMPLE curtains covered 8 of the 10 cubits-- 2 cubits were left exposed. *4 So TENT curtains (9' of cover) covered one foot more than the TEMPLE curtains (8' of cover) and left only one cubit exposed of 10 cubit height (Ex26-08a Ex26-13a Ex26-13b Ex26-13c)*10 *11 *5 Ex26-05a So the TEMPLE curtains covered 8 of the 10 cubits-- 2 cubits were left exposed. *6 Ex26-12a Ex26-12b *7 Ex26-09a Ex26-09b
*10 Rashi assumes this one cubit exposed was the height of the silver stands for the wooden beams (It makes sense that the wood needed protection but the metal did not *11 Rashi notes that the less important TENT curtains were longer and protected the more important TEMPLE curtains |

*1 Many people are familiar with the concept of the FORMULA PLUG IN. That is a problem is solved by a formula which you plug into. But some problems intrinsically cannot (initally) be solved by a formula. Instead you have to formulate the problem algebraically and solve;only then do you have the formula. In other words these problems are solved by the EQUATION vs the FORMULA Thus the statement that the eldest gets double suggests the following model. - Suppose the are B brothers - Suppose 1 of them is eldest - The Fathers total assets are T (Total) - Let A be the amount each brother inherits We have no formula for A - Then each of the B-1 brothers obtains A - The eldest obtains double, 2A. - Together this exhausts the Fathers estate, T Hence we have (B-1)A + 2A = (B+1)A = T This gives rise to the formula A = T / (B+1) An example is a father with 100,000 and 4 children - T=100,000 - B=4 - So each child take T/(B+1) = 100000/5 = 20,000 - Eldest takes 2*20000=40000 - Other 3 take 20000 - Total distribution =3*20000+40000=100000 See Rambam Inheritance Chapter 2 *2 Rashi gives a clarifying example to the verse GOD FORGIVES HER -------------------------------------------------------------- - the women vowed to become a nazarite - the husband annuled her vow - but the husband did not tell her about the annulment - the women then violated her vow - - In such a case God forgives the women (despite her intending to commit a sin) because of the unknown annulment of her husband - - We conclude that sin is an attribute of ACTION,not INTENT -------------------------------------------------------------- *3 Recall that Pharoh ordered all male babys murdered. Moses was not murdered when born but was kept in hiding for 3 months. His mother put him in a box floating on the Nile. When Pharoh's daughter found the box Miryam, Moses sister, approached Pharoh's daughter to ask if she wanted help from a Midwife. If Miryam was a nobody this would have aroused suspicion Why was she mysteriously appearing to offer help after the baby was found. Therefore Miryam was probably a professional midwife. She could offer help without suspicion. Similarly Yocheved must have been a midwife...she made her living thru nursing and delivering so no body would suspect her of being the mother. This proof is not iron clad---but rather the identification of Miryam and Yocheved as midwives alleviates some of the "coincidences" that happen in the story. *4 The Egyptian magicians tried to bring the LICE out FROM ELSEWHERE (So that they could take credit for it) but could not do so *5 There is an old controversy whether WITCHCRAFT is real or not. I have solved this problem in an unpublished article - WITCHCRAFT does NOT affect the real world Hence in some sense it is NOT REAL - WITCHCRAFT takes effect by using HALLUCINATIONS It causes the recipient to SENSE THINGS that are not there. For example a WITCH may make a person believe that he sees FLYING ELEPHANTS - - The witch has NOT PRODUCED flying elephants - - But the witch HAS PRODUCED AN HALLUCINATION In this sense witchcraft is PSYCHOLOGICALLY REAL. Using this distinction we can understand why the Egypitan WITCHES (= HALLUCINATION CREATORS) were able to CREATE FROGS but not LICE. FROGS are big and it is easy to make people hallucinate them. LICE is minute. Rashi explains that it is difficult to make people HALLUCINATE minute objects...for this reason the Egyptian witches could not produce the lice. (And hence they had to recognize Moses as a prophet vs a WITCH) |
